To fix bug-infested wood, first determine whether insects are still active and how much wood has been damaged. Replace localized, unsound pieces; use a treatment only if it is appropriate for the identified pest and the wood’s condition; and have load-bearing damage assessed before relying on a repair. Insect treatment can stop damage, but it cannot restore wood that has lost strength.
How do you know whether the infestation is active?
Look for fresh powder or frass (insect droppings and wood debris), live insects, or new emergence holes. Old holes can remain after an infestation has ended, and adult beetles may continue to emerge from a piece for a time. Clean the area and check it again for new debris rather than treating old holes as proof of current activity.

Exit-hole size and the texture of frass can help narrow down the pest, but neither identifies it on its own. Wood-boring beetles, termites, old house borers, and other insects require different responses. The University of Florida IFAS describes powderpost beetle clues such as round emergence holes and powder-like, sometimes gritty frass; Michigan State University Extension notes that frass texture and how far a pen tip enters a hole can also help distinguish groups. If the identification would change the treatment, ask an extension service or pest-management professional to identify the insect.

Powderpost beetles are not one uniform problem: different species use different wood, and their development can be slow. University of Florida IFAS reports a life cycle of 1 to 10 years depending on species; the publication date is not stated on the retrieved page. Its guidance says that powderpost beetles and old house borers damage wood slowly, leaving time to consider control options.

Is the wood safe to repair, or should it be replaced?
Separate pest control from structural repair. A treatment may kill or deter insects, but it does not replace wood fibers or restore a member weakened by tunnels. If damage is extensive, concealed, or in a beam, joist, sill, floor, or another load-bearing component, have the wood assessed before deciding on a repair. Depending on the damage, that assessment may call for a qualified builder, structural engineer, or pest professional.
When damage is confined to a removable piece, taking it out and replacing it with sound wood is often the clearest repair. University of Florida IFAS gives a localized door or window frame member as an example. For structural members, make sure the replacement and any supporting work are appropriate to the building and the extent of damage; filling holes or coating the surface is not a substitute for that work.

- IDEAL FOR NEW AND EXISTING CONSTRUCTION: Perfect for use in both new builds and existing homes; apply during the dried-in phase for whole-house protection against dry wood and subterranean termites.
- ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY: Protects your home without pumping chemicals into the ground; reduces environmental impact by eliminating the need for soil treatments; safe for use in sensitive areas like lakeside homes.
- LONG-LASTING RESIDUAL PROTECTION: Once applied, Bora-Care remains active in wood for the life of the structure; and provides lasting protection against termites and other wood-destroying insects with one simple application.
Which treatment fits the wood and the infestation?
| Situation | Potential approach | Important limits |
|---|---|---|
| Localized, removable piece | Remove and replace with sound wood. | Does not by itself establish whether insects remain in adjoining or concealed wood. |
| Bare, accessible wood | A labeled borate surface treatment may be suitable for some powderpost beetle situations. | Product label, pest, site, and ability to penetrate the wood determine suitability; a finish can block treatment. |
| Furniture or another movable object | Ask a pest-management professional about chamber or other controlled treatment. | Heat must be controlled throughout the object; improvised heating risks damage and fire. |
| Extensive or concealed infestation in a structure | Have a licensed pest-control provider assess options, which may include professional fumigation. | Fumigation is costly, offers no residual protection, and is not a routine response to old holes in one item. |
Bare, accessible wood
For suitable cases, borate products formulated for wood treatment may be applied to bare, exposed wood if the product label allows the intended use. Penetration matters: an existing finish may need to be removed or sanded before treatment. Surface borates can affect adult beetles as they emerge and newly hatched larvae trying to enter; in some situations, treatment may penetrate far enough to reach larvae beneath the surface. Penn State Extension cautions that surface borate sprays are not effective on wood sealed against moisture. Choose and apply a product only according to its label and the identified pest.

Furniture and other movable objects
A controlled chamber treatment may be an option for furniture, artwork, or smaller articles. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach describes chamber heat treatment of lumber, furniture, or art pieces at 133–150°F for 30 minutes to 4 hours, with humidity controlled to reduce drying and cracking; the publication date is not stated on the retrieved page. These are controlled commercial conditions, not household instructions. Do not try to reproduce them with an oven, heat gun, or improvised heating setup: temperature throughout the object, finishes, glue joints, and fire risk all matter. Ask a pest-management professional whether a chamber treatment is suitable for the item.
Extensive or concealed infestation
When damage appears to extend through a building or into inaccessible wood, have a licensed pest-control provider identify the pest and explain feasible options. University of Florida IFAS describes fumigation as the most effective method for wood-boring beetles, while also noting its cost and lack of residual protection. Fumigation must be performed by certified operators. A chamber may be possible for some furniture, avoiding treatment of the whole building; structural fumigation is a major professional decision, not a first response to a few old holes.

How can you reduce the chance of another infestation?
Correct leaks and excess dampness, and improve ventilation where appropriate. Moisture can matter for some powderpost beetles, but the relevant conditions vary by species. University of Florida IFAS reports 13%–30% wood moisture content as the optimal development range for anobiine powderpost beetles; this publication-date-unspecified figure is specific to that group, not a universal threshold for wood pests.
Finishing or sealing bare wood may discourage egg-laying by some beetles, but it will not kill larvae already inside. Moisture management and sealing can reduce some risks; neither is a guaranteed cure for an active infestation within wood. Do not spray infested firewood with pesticides; the National Pesticide Information Center advises against it.
