Start with your library system’s official website, not a map listing or an old social post. Open the page for the closed branch, read the closure or renovation notice, and then verify the current plan for holds, returns, hours, and replacement locations before you travel. A library may use another branch, a pop-up site, bookmobile, curbside pickup, holds locker, lending machine, or reciprocal borrowing arrangement—and the available mix is specific to that library system.
1. Find the official closure notice first
Library buildings can close for renovations, emergency repairs, weather damage, or a planned move. The service plan can change while work is under way, so the branch’s own notice is more reliable than a search-result snippet, an outdated directory, or a post shared by someone else.

Search by branch name and the problem
Use the library system’s main website and search for the exact branch name with one of these terms: “closure,” “renovation,” “temporary services,” or “reopening.” If the system has a branch directory, open the branch page even when a separate project page appears in search results. The branch page often contains the current banner, contact details, holiday hours, and links to project updates.
Check the date and scope of the notice
Read the publication or “last updated” date. Identify whether the notice covers a full building closure, reduced hours, a partial floor closure, or a short emergency shutdown. A multi-year renovation estimate is not a guaranteed reopening date. Look for a statement about when the next update will be posted and whether dates are subject to change.
Record the details you will need
- Closure start date and expected reopening date or review date.
- Replacement sites, mobile stops, or pickup points, including their addresses.
- Opening days and hours, holiday exceptions, and any appointment requirement.
- Services that continue and those that stop, such as browsing, computers, study rooms, programs, printing, or public meeting space.
- Instructions for holds, returns, renewals, fines, and account questions.
- A telephone number, email address, or service desk for questions the notice does not answer.
Save the page or note when you checked it. If you are giving directions to a group, school, or household, include the check date so nobody mistakes a temporary schedule for a permanent one.

2. Identify what “temporary library service” means locally
There is no single substitute model. A library can combine several options, and each may support different tasks. Use the table to match the service to what you need rather than assuming every alternative is a full branch.
| Possible service | What it may provide | Questions to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Another permanent branch | Browsing, computers, staff help, programs, returns, and hold pickup, depending on the branch. | Is it open when you need it? Are all services operating, and can your account use it for holds? |
| Temporary or pop-up library | A smaller collection, staff assistance, computers, programs, or selected equipment in a borrowed space. | What is the address, accessibility arrangement, schedule, and service list? Is there a separate returns bin? |
| Bookmobile | Mobile browsing, reserved-item pickup, returns, and basic information at scheduled stops. | Which stop serves your area, on which dates and times, and must staff record that stop on your hold? |
| Curbside or appointment pickup | Reserved materials delivered outside a site or handed over at a scheduled time. | How do you schedule pickup, where do you park or wait, and how long will staff hold the items? |
| Holds locker or lending machine | Self-service collection of reserved items, and sometimes direct borrowing from a small automated collection. | How will you receive an access code, what are the pickup hours, and where can you return items? |
| Reciprocal borrowing | Permission to use another library system or neighboring location under an agreement. | Do you need registration, identification, a separate card, or limits on borrowing and digital access? |
| Digital library and online services | E-books, audiobooks, databases, renewals, account management, and remote reference where offered. | Is your card eligible, which authentication method is required, and which resources remain available during the closure? |
Distance and accessibility are only part of the choice. Compare the service you actually need, the days and hours, transport or parking, and whether the arrangement is expected to change. A nearby bookmobile may be better for holds than a distant full branch; a pop-up site may offer computers but no browsing collection.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3. Check nearby branches and temporary sites
Use the closure notice’s named alternatives
Start with locations explicitly listed by the library. They may have negotiated staffing, transferred materials, or account permissions that a generic nearby branch does not. Open each alternative branch page to confirm its own hours, accessibility information, parking, and service interruptions.
Compare alternatives for the task at hand
| Need | Best information to compare |
|---|---|
| Pick up a reserved item | Whether holds are routed there, pickup hours, identification requirements, and how long the item is held. |
| Browse shelves | Collection size, browsing hours, and whether the temporary site has a browsing collection or only reserved items. |
| Use a computer, printer, or study room | Equipment availability, reservations, session limits, fees, and whether those services are suspended. |
| Attend a program | Whether the event moved, was canceled, or requires registration at a different location. |
| Return materials | Open book drops, staffed desks, separate returns bins, and any restrictions on oversized or special-format items. |
Ask about access needs before you go
Temporary spaces can have different entrances, elevators, parking, seating, quiet areas, or restroom access. If you need an accessible route, assistive technology, language support, or a particular service desk, contact the library before traveling. Ask whether a mobile stop or curbside process can accommodate your need and whether an appointment is required.
4. Manage holds in your online account
Do not assume a closed branch will automatically redirect your reservations. Sign in to the catalog or library account and inspect every active hold.
- Open the library system’s account sign-in page and select the holds or requests section.
- Check the pickup location shown for each item. Some systems let you change the location from the hold record; others require staff assistance.
- Read any banner or message explaining that holds are paused, rerouted, or subject to a new pickup window.
- If a temporary site or mobile stop is available, select it only if that exact location appears as an approved choice. If it does not appear, contact staff and ask them to record your preferred stop.
- Confirm the change and look for an updated status or confirmation message. Keep the confirmation until the item is collected.
Hold policies differ even within the same region. A closure notice may pause all holds by default, while another system may move them automatically to a named branch. You may be able to suspend a hold to preserve your place in the queue, cancel it, or change only the pickup location. Ask whether changing locations affects your position in line, especially for high-demand items.

Bookmobile holds need special attention
Toronto Public Library’s bookmobile information explains that a stop is often added when a branch closes for an extended period. Patrons can place branch items on hold for bookmobile pickup, but staff should be told which stop to use. The same service warns that the availability of items in a browsing collection cannot be guaranteed. Treat this as an illustration of a possible arrangement, not a promise that every bookmobile works that way.
5. Confirm returns, renewals, and due dates
A closed building does not automatically mean its book drop is open. The drop may be locked, removed, or reserved for construction access. Read the return instructions and verify the destination before leaving materials.
Where returns may be accepted
- Any branch in the same system, if the closure notice says system-wide returns are allowed.
- A named alternate branch or a separate returns bin at a pop-up site.
- A bookmobile stop, if the mobile service accepts returns there.
- A staffed curbside point, when the library provides that option.
- A partner or reciprocal location only when the library explicitly confirms it.
Keep a receipt or ask for an electronic check-in confirmation. For a drop box, note the date and time and retain the item list until your account updates. Do not place items in an unmarked container or leave them outside a temporary site.
Ask how the closure affects due dates
Some systems extend due dates, enable automatic renewal, or suppress overdue notices; others keep the original dates. Renewal can fail when another patron has a hold, an item has reached its renewal limit, or the item belongs to a special collection. Check each item in your account instead of relying on a general statement about the closure.
6. Continue using digital and remote services
Many systems keep digital borrowing and online account tools running while a building is closed. Availability depends on your local card, residency rules, and the individual database or platform.
Check the digital library page
Look for e-books, digital audiobooks, streaming media, language-learning tools, research databases, downloadable forms, and online renewal. Sign in with the credentials the library specifies. A temporary closure generally does not create a new universal entitlement; the system decides which cardholders qualify and which licenses are active.

Ask about remote help
If you need a research consultation, technology help, literacy service, or account correction, ask whether staff provide email, telephone, chat, video appointments, or scheduled outreach. Event calendars may show cancellations, moved programs, or online sessions. Confirm registration requirements and time zones for virtual events.
Fairfax County Public Library’s October 9, 2026 notice for George Mason Regional Library says e-books, audiobooks, and online databases remain available to cardholders 24/7 during an approximately two-year renovation. That notice also illustrates why account-level instructions matter: holds are paused unless the patron changes the setting. Other systems may make different choices.

Construction schedules, weather, staffing, and delivery delays can alter a temporary service without much notice. Check the library’s current closure page and the official social channel identified by the library shortly before your trip. If the information conflicts, call or email the library and ask which instruction is current.
Questions to ask staff
- Is the alternate location open today, and are its posted hours accurate?
- Where exactly should I pick up this hold, and has my account been changed?
- Can I return this item at the temporary site or another branch?
- Is the bookmobile running its normal stop this week?
- Are computers, printing, programs, study rooms, or browsing available?
- Will the arrangement change on a stated date, and where will the next update appear?
Write down the staff member’s instructions, the date and time, and any reference number. This is especially useful when a family member, caregiver, teacher, or colleague will make the trip for you.
8. What official closure examples show
Local notices demonstrate the range of possible plans. They should help you recognize service types, not replace checking your own library.
Fairfax County, Virginia
In an October 9, 2026 update, Fairfax County Public Library said George Mason Regional Library would close for an approximately two-year renovation. The notice named nearby branches, said staff at any branch could help redirect holds, and allowed pickup and returns at any FCPL branch. It also described 24/7 access to e-books, audiobooks, and online databases for cardholders. Holds were paused unless patrons changed the setting in their accounts.

Hawthorne, Florida
An Alachua County Library District announcement dated January 28, 2026 described a bookmobile at a temporary site with holds pickup, informational help, and browsing. Programs were paused. The example shows that a mobile replacement can preserve several core services while leaving events unavailable; it is not a current schedule for every closure.
Fonthill, Ontario
Lincoln Pelham Public Library’s August 28, 2026 update described expanded hours at Maple Acre, added bookmobile stops, a lending machine, reciprocal borrowing, and returns at other named locations. Holds were redirected to Maple Acre by default, with alternate pickup available by request. This is why you should inspect both the default pickup setting and the list of exceptions.

“My hold still shows the closed branch”
Do not travel until the pickup location is confirmed. Look for a change-location control, pause the hold if appropriate, or ask staff to move it. Request written or electronic confirmation and check the account again after the change.

“The temporary site has no item I want to browse”
Ask whether the site is pickup-only, whether a catalog request can be sent there, and whether a bookmobile carries a browsing collection. If browsing availability is not guaranteed, place a hold for a specific title instead.
“The website says the branch is closed, but the map says open”
Use the library system’s dated notice and branch page as the controlling sources. Maps and third-party directories can lag behind construction changes. Call the listed service desk if the official pages disagree.

“I cannot return an item”
Check whether returns are accepted at another branch, a temporary bin, or a mobile stop. Ask for an extension or renewal before the due date rather than leaving the item unattended. Keep proof of the return.
“The temporary location is difficult to reach”
Ask about a different branch, curbside pickup, a locker, a bookmobile stop, delivery or outreach service, or a remote alternative. Explain the access barrier so staff can identify an available accommodation rather than simply repeating the nearest address.
10. A five-minute check before leaving home
- Open the official branch closure or renovation notice and confirm its update date.
- Verify today’s hours, address, entrance, parking, and accessibility information for the chosen alternative.
- Check each hold’s pickup location and status in your account.
- Confirm the exact return point and whether your due date or renewal status changed.
- Check the library’s current official social update or call staff if weather, construction, or a schedule change is possible.
- Save the address, phone number, and any pickup code or appointment confirmation.
These checks prevent the most expensive mistake in a closure: arriving at the wrong place for a service that was never offered there. Temporary library service works best when you match one verified location to one specific need—pickup, return, browsing, computer use, program attendance, or digital access—and recheck the details whenever the project notice changes.
