PennDOT’s free, 24-hour service shows Philadelphia-area traffic speeds, incidents, closures, roadwork, weather, message signs and available camera feeds on its website, mobile apps and telephone line. For scheduled work on state-owned highways, consult PennDOT District 6’s Philadelphia Regional Traffic Bulletin. If your trip uses buses, trains or a station access road, check the relevant SEPTA alert and real-time map separately. Recheck every source shortly before leaving because live incidents develop and planned schedules can change.
Which Philadelphia traffic source should you use?
No single feed is guaranteed to show every closure or transit consequence. Match the source to the question you need answered: a live roadway map for an incident happening now, a schedule of planned state-highway restrictions, or a transit alert for a SEPTA route.

PennDOT describes 511PA this way: “511PA, which is free and available 24 hours a day, provides traffic delay warnings, weather forecasts, traffic speed information and access to more than 1,000 traffic cameras.” That is PennDOT’s stated service description, not an independent accuracy or completeness measurement. PennDOT also says the service covers more than 40,000 roadway miles. Those figures describe the statewide service, not a promise that every Philadelphia side street appears on the map.
How to check a Philadelphia route on 511PA
The map is the fastest way to investigate a drive, but it works best when you turn on only the layers that answer your question. Use this sequence on the website or in the mobile app.
#1 Best Overall
- Valued Carpenter Pencil Set: You will get 2 pcs solid carpenter pencils with 26 piece 2.8 mm refills, 1 replaceable sharpener, 1 plastic storage box.The complete carpenter pencils combination allows you to finish your work faster and more easily
- Deep Hole Marker Pencil: The deep-hole construction pencils adopts 45mm elongated tip design, which is more convenient to mark in the small hole or in other tight areas that other carpenter markers cannot reach
- Carpenter Pencils with Sharpener: The sharpener is screwed into the top of the work pencil, which won't get lost either. Built-in pencil sharpener that keep the lead with pointed and smooth to Improves line of sight in fine work
- Stronger Solid Lead: This work pencil is matched with a 2.8 mm thick lead , which is much thicker and stronger during the drawing process of construction work, it will not break or damage easily
- Marks on Various Surfaces: 3 colors solid construction pencil can marks on various surfaces, such as metal, plastic, wood, paper etc. Ideals for woodworkers, contractors, craftsmen, builders, merchants and masons
- Open the map. Go to 511PA Map or open the official 511PA app. Allow location access only if you want the map centered on your current position.
- Locate the trip area. Search for a Philadelphia address, highway, interchange or neighborhood, or zoom and pan until both the origin and destination are visible. If the trip crosses county lines, keep the whole corridor in view.
- Enable traffic speeds. Turn on the traffic-speed layer to see where movement is slow compared with surrounding road segments. A slow segment tells you that travel is impaired; it does not by itself identify the cause.
- Enable incidents and closures. Select the incident and closure layers, then open each symbol on or near your route. Read the description, affected direction and any listed start or end information rather than relying only on the icon.
- Check active roadwork and special events. Planned construction, permitted events and lane restrictions may explain a recurring delay even when no crash is listed. Enable those layers for the time window of your trip.
- Open nearby cameras. Where a camera is available, select it to inspect the latest image. Camera availability is location-dependent, and an image is a snapshot rather than a guarantee of conditions a few minutes later.
- Read message signs and weather information. Variable-message signs can show an official warning or diversion. Weather layers and forecasts help explain rapidly changing speed or pavement conditions.
- Use route planning and notifications when appropriate. Enter the planned route to review relevant information and configure route notifications if the service offers an alert for that corridor. Treat an alert as a prompt to check the map, not as permission to ignore changing conditions.
- Record the decision. Note the affected road, direction, time and any suggested detour. If you are coordinating a crew or a delivery, send the link or a screenshot with its timestamp so everyone is working from the same check.
511PA’s layers can reveal a state highway closure without showing every municipal street restriction. If the map shows no incident but a local road is blocked, check the city, police, event or facility notice associated with that street and allow extra time. Do not infer that an empty map means all roads are open.
When the District 6 traffic bulletin is the right source
PennDOT District 6’s Philadelphia Regional Traffic Bulletin lists current and upcoming travel restrictions planned on state-owned highways in Philadelphia, Bucks, Chester, Delaware and Montgomery counties. It is particularly useful when a project will close lanes overnight, stage a long-term work zone or impose a restriction that has been announced before the work begins.
What the bulletin can answer
- Which state-owned highway, bridge or ramp is scheduled for work.
- Whether a lane restriction, full closure or other travel limitation is planned.
- When the restriction is expected to begin and end, where those dates are provided.
- Which surrounding counties may affect a regional route into or out of Philadelphia.
What it cannot replace
- It is not a complete list of every city-owned street closure, crash, disabled vehicle or police activity.
- It is not a substitute for the live 511PA map when you need current speeds, incident icons or camera views.
- It does not make a construction schedule certain. PennDOT warns that weather and unforeseen circumstances can change schedules.
The page is updated in real time during normal business hours. For an early-morning, evening or weekend departure, read the latest bulletin entry, then verify the corridor on 511PA just before leaving. A planned restriction can be delayed, extended or accompanied by a separate incident.

How to check SEPTA service when a closure affects transit
If your trip uses a bus, subway, trolley, regional rail train or a station access road, check SEPTA independently at septa.org. SEPTA provides route planning, schedules, fares, service alerts and a real-time map. Select the actual route and direction instead of relying on a general transit headline.
- Open route planning. Enter the starting point, destination and intended departure time. Include a walk to the stop or station if a road closure could affect that approach.
- Choose the specific line or route. A citywide alert may not apply to every trip on a line. Open the route details and read the alert text for the affected stops, direction and time.
- Review the real-time map. Look for vehicle positions, canceled trips, turnbacks or unusually long gaps where the map provides them. Real-time positioning does not guarantee that a vehicle will reach the next stop on schedule.
- Check alternatives. If a bus is detoured, compare another route, a nearby stop or a rail connection. Confirm the walking path because the street closure may affect the transfer itself.
- Recheck before boarding. A detour can be issued after you leave home, especially when a crash, emergency work or police activity closes a street without advance notice.
Philadelphia’s Office of Innovation and Technology transportation data roadmap describes information-sharing gaps among Streets, SEPTA and police and notes that an unplanned closure can leave SEPTA little time to respond. The roadmap is historical context, not proof that every proposed system was implemented. Its practical lesson remains important: a roadway feed and a transit feed can show different effects from the same event, so consult both when your trip involves transit.

One day to several hours before travel
- Read the District 6 bulletin for planned state-highway work along the route and likely alternatives.
- Open the 511PA map and turn on roadwork, closures, incidents and special-event layers.
- Check SEPTA’s route alert if anyone will ride transit or connect through a station.
- Build time for a detour, a missed connection and a second check. Do not schedule a critical arrival on the assumption that a posted end time is guaranteed.
Immediately before leaving
- Refresh 511PA and inspect the route in both directions, including approach roads and the final destination.
- Open any nearby camera and read the incident detail, not just the color on the map.
- Look again at the relevant SEPTA route and alert text if transit is involved.
- Save the official phone or web access method for a passenger to recheck later. The driver should not handle a phone while moving.
During the trip
- Stop in a legal, safe location before changing the route or reading a new alert.
- Expect conditions to diverge from an earlier image or speed color as queues form and clear.
- Do not enter a barricaded road, closed ramp or signed work zone because a navigation route still displays it.
How to interpret different kinds of information
Speed colors and delay warnings
A speed layer identifies slower movement relative to normal traffic, while a delay warning calls attention to a reported problem. Neither measurement alone tells you how long the delay will last. Compare the affected segment with parallel roads and inspect the incident description before choosing a diversion.
Incident and closure symbols
An incident can mean a crash, disabled vehicle, hazard or other event; a closure indicates that travel is restricted or prohibited for the listed facility. Read the direction, lanes or ramps affected and the reported time. A point symbol may represent a longer queue than the icon itself suggests.
Roadwork entries
Work may be scheduled for a particular night, a range of dates or a recurring period. Use the bulletin for the planned restriction and 511PA for what is actually happening. Weather or field conditions can move the work window.

Camera images
A camera helps confirm queue length, pavement visibility or whether a work zone is active at that moment. Cameras are not installed on every road, may be unavailable, and cannot show conditions beyond their field of view.
Transit alerts
A SEPTA alert is route-specific information, not a guarantee that every connecting street is clear. If a bus detour is caused by a closure, verify the stop location and walking approach in addition to the service message.
Common Philadelphia traffic-checking mistakes and fixes
| Problem | Why it happens | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Checking only a navigation app | General navigation may lag an official closure or display a route through a newly blocked street. | Verify the corridor on 511PA and read the official incident or closure detail before departure. |
| Using only the planned-work bulletin | The bulletin focuses on scheduled state-highway restrictions and does not cover every crash or local street closure. | Pair the bulletin with live 511PA incidents, speeds and cameras. |
| Assuming a state-highway listing covers the whole trip | A city street, bridge approach or private access road may be controlled by another authority. | Check the final local streets and any facility or event notice separately; allow a detour. |
| Reading an old screenshot | Live conditions and transit alerts can change rapidly. | Refresh immediately before departure and record the check time when sharing information. |
| Treating a camera as a forecast | The image shows one location at one moment. | Combine the image with the incident text, speeds, weather and the expected travel window. |
| Missing a transit consequence | A road closure can detour a bus without appearing as a conventional highway closure on a rider’s map. | Open the exact SEPTA route and alert, then verify stop and transfer details. |
Choosing an alternate route without creating a new problem
When 511PA shows a closure, compare complete corridors rather than jumping to the nearest parallel street. A diversion that avoids the original incident may funnel traffic into a narrow residential road, a bridge with limited capacity or another work zone.

- Clog resistant tip writes on dusty, wet and oily surfaces and is optimized for rough surfaces such as OSB, cinderblock and concrete
- Hard hat clip- attaches for easy access
- Quick dry time with reduced smearing and marking
- Identify the restriction’s boundaries. Note the exact road, direction, ramp or intersection and whether the restriction is a full closure or a lane reduction.
- Find two alternatives. Use route planning to compare a primary diversion and a backup that re-enters the main corridor farther away from the incident.
- Check each alternative for its own symbols. Turn on incidents, closures, work and cameras for both routes; do not inspect only the first few miles.
- Check time and vehicle constraints. A commercial vehicle, oversized load, school bus or delivery may not be able to use the same local diversion as a passenger car.
- Confirm the last mile. Verify the destination entrance, loading area, station approach or customer access. A passable highway does not guarantee access to the address.
- Communicate the change. Give passengers or coworkers the road name, direction and reason for the diversion, along with a time to recheck.
Using 511PA away from a computer
511PA is available through iPhone and Android apps and by calling 5-1-1, in addition to the website. The telephone option is useful when a passenger needs information or when data service is limited, but prepare the road name, direction and nearest interchange so the request is specific. Do not handle a phone while driving. A passenger should operate the app or call, or the driver should pull over safely.
PennDOT also links regional alerts from the 511PA service. Subscribe only to the corridors and alert types relevant to your regular trips so important warnings are not buried in unrelated notifications. An alert is a notice to investigate the route; it is not a substitute for checking the current map.
Limits of Philadelphia’s real-time closure information
The official tools provide strong coverage for the roadways and agencies they serve, but they do not form one exhaustive, instantaneous database of every blocked street. The District 6 bulletin is limited to planned restrictions on state-owned highways. 511PA’s stated coverage of more than 40,000 roadway miles and more than 1,000 cameras is statewide, and camera or incident availability varies by location. SEPTA’s data describes its own service, not every roadway condition around a stop.
Recommended Free Tools
Philadelphia’s transportation data roadmap documented coordination challenges around unplanned closures and bus detours. Because that document describes an earlier planning context, it should not be read as a current inventory of city systems or as evidence that a proposed notification feature is active. Use it to set expectations: an event can affect driving, walking and transit on different timelines, and no single screen should be treated as complete.
