The most reliable answer comes from the lumberyard itself: find a dated announcement on its official channels, then call or email the business and ask whether the decision is final, which cooperative is involved, and when the change takes effect. Confirm the named cooperative through its official member or corporate-development channel. A new logo, a directory entry, or local gossip can provide clues, but none by itself proves that a particular lumberyard is preparing to join.
Start with an evidence ladder
Use sources in order of reliability. A statement published by the lumberyard and a direct answer from its staff are primary evidence about that business. The cooperative can then confirm whether the relationship described by the yard fits its membership model. Directories, storefront signs and social comments are useful corroboration, but they may lag behind events or show only an existing affiliation.

- Yard announcement: Look for a dated notice on the lumberyard’s website, social accounts, customer email or newsletter.
- Direct confirmation: Call or email using contact details published by the business, not a number copied from an unverified post.
- Cooperative confirmation: Contact the named co-op through its official corporate or member-information channel.
- Independent corroboration: Check a cooperative directory, visible branding and local reporting.
- Documented uncertainty: If the yard will not confirm and no dated announcement exists, report that the status could not be verified.
This order prevents a common error: treating evidence that a store is already listed with a cooperative as proof that a future transition is underway.

Check the official website
Begin with the yard’s home page, news or blog section, customer-service page and any page describing its history or affiliations. Use the site’s search tool if it has one. Search engines can also narrow the search with the yard’s name and terms such as joining, member, co-op, cooperative, Do it Best, True Value and Ace.

Record the page title, publication date and wording. “We are now a member” describes a completed affiliation. “We will join” describes a plan. “We are evaluating” or “in discussions” describes an earlier stage. A page with no date is weaker evidence because you cannot tell whether it describes the current situation.
Review social accounts and customer messages
Check the yard’s verified or clearly official accounts, including recent posts and pinned announcements. Search the customer email inbox, newsletter archive and text-message notices if you receive them. Save the direct link or a screenshot that includes the posting date, because a social post can later be edited or removed.
Pay attention to who made the statement. A post from the lumberyard’s account is attributable to the business. A comment by a customer, contractor or employee may be informed, but it is not an official confirmation unless the yard adopts it in a public response.
Look at local reporting without treating it as final proof
Local newspapers, trade publications and municipal or chamber announcements can reveal a planned change that the yard has not placed on its own website. Check whether the report names an owner or manager, quotes the business, gives a date and distinguishes a completed decision from negotiations. If it says only that a new sign was seen or that people are talking about a change, use it as a lead and ask the yard directly.
Ask the lumberyard directly
Once you have checked public information, contact the business. Use the phone number, email address or contact form published on the yard’s official website. A direct conversation can resolve details that a short announcement leaves out, such as whether membership has been approved or is still being considered.
A concise call or email script
You can ask:
“I am trying to understand whether the lumberyard has decided to join a hardware cooperative. Is the decision final, which cooperative is involved, and what is the expected effective date? Will the yard keep its current name and ownership? Should customers expect changes to product selection, ordering, hours or customer services? Is there an announcement or a cooperative contact who can confirm the information?”

Ask the employee to spell the cooperative’s name and clarify whether the date is an approval date, a planned launch date or simply an estimate. If the answer comes from someone who cannot speak for the business, request a manager or an official written statement.
Questions that separate a real decision from a rumor
- Decision status: Has the yard decided to join, or is the idea still under discussion?
- Identity: Which cooperative is involved?
- Timing: What is the expected effective date, and has that date been formally confirmed?
- Business identity: Will the yard keep its current name, brand and ownership?
- Customer impact: Will product selection, ordering, hours or customer services change?
- Verification: Is there a public announcement or an official cooperative contact who can confirm the relationship?
Do not pressure staff to speculate. If the answer is “we cannot comment,” record that accurately rather than converting silence into evidence that a deal exists.
Confirm the named cooperative through its own channel
After the yard names a cooperative, use that organization’s official information rather than relying on a third-party directory. The confirmation should match the yard’s name, location and stage of change. A cooperative may be able to confirm its membership model without disclosing confidential negotiations, so ask what it can verify publicly.
Do it Best LBM
Do it Best LBM explains its membership process and says members retain their name, brand and control of the business. Its member information is available at Do it Best LBM’s Become a Member page. That statement is important when a yard says it is joining but still plans to operate under its established local identity.
The page describes the cooperative’s member model, not the status of every lumberyard. To verify a specific business, provide the yard’s exact name and location and ask whether the cooperative can confirm an active or announced relationship.

The same corporate overview reports a May 2025 merger with United Hardware and a November 2024 acquisition of True Value. Those are corporate developments, not evidence that an unnamed local yard is joining. They may explain why a yard uses one of several identities, but only the yard and the cooperative can establish the status of that particular location.
Ace Hardware
Ace describes its structure in its retailer FAQ as follows: “Ace is a retailer-owned cooperative, not a traditional franchise.” Read the complete explanation and the route to its corporate development team at Ace Hardware’s Retailer FAQs. The contact route is useful when a lumberyard says it is pursuing an Ace relationship and you need an official channel for the retailer model.
The FAQ explains how Ace operates as a cooperative; it does not establish that a particular lumberyard is an Ace member or that a planned transition has been approved. Ask the cooperative to confirm only the details it is authorized to provide.
Understand what a name or logo can—and cannot—tell you
A local name may remain
Do it Best LBM expressly says members retain their name and brand, and Do it Best Group describes locations operating under Do it Best, True Value or local identities. Therefore, the absence of a new national sign does not disprove membership. A yard may add cooperative purchasing or services while keeping its established name.
A new sign is a clue, not a timeline
A co-op logo on a building, truck, receipt or website can indicate an affiliation, but it does not tell you when the relationship began or whether a future change is still being negotiated. Ask the yard what the logo represents and when that status became effective.
Directories show listings, not future plans
The Ace store directory can help check whether a location is currently listed. A directory is a useful corroborating source, but it may not include pending changes or effective dates. A missing listing can also reflect update timing or a different local identity. Treat the entry as evidence of what the directory currently displays, then verify the business relationship directly.

Classify the status you actually know
Use precise language when you write down the result or tell someone else. These categories prevent an early conversation from being reported as a completed transition.

| Completed affiliation | The yard announces membership or confirms that it is already effective; the cooperative can corroborate the relationship. | “The yard is a member of [cooperative], effective [date].” |
| Announced plan | The yard publishes a dated statement naming the cooperative and a future or target date. | “The yard announced plans to join [cooperative], with a target date of [date].” |
| Under discussion | The yard or a named representative says talks or evaluation are continuing. | “The yard is discussing a possible relationship with [cooperative].” |
| Independent clue | A logo, directory entry or third-party report appears without a confirming statement from the yard. | “There is an indication of an affiliation, but the transition could not be independently confirmed.” |
| Unverified | No dated announcement is available and the yard will not confirm the claim. | “The yard’s co-op status could not be verified.” |
Do not upgrade a lower category to a higher one merely because several people repeat the same rumor. Multiple copies of an unverified claim are still not a dated statement from the business.

Membership itself does not tell you exactly how a yard will operate. Ask the business which customer-facing details, if any, will change.
Product selection and special orders
Ask whether the cooperative relationship will add or remove product lines, alter brands carried, change special-order procedures or affect lead times. Request an effective date for any change and ask whether existing quotes or orders will be honored under the same terms.
Ordering and account procedures
Find out whether contractor accounts, delivery arrangements, online ordering, invoices or loyalty programs will use a new system. If you have an open account, ask whether you need to sign new paperwork or update billing information.

Ownership and local decision-making
If keeping the current owner or local identity matters to you, ask directly. Do it Best LBM says members retain control of the business, but that general member description does not answer the ownership question for an unnamed yard. The yard’s own representative must explain its arrangement.
Resolve conflicting information
Conflicts are common when a directory updates before a website, when a sign is installed before an effective date, or when a local report describes negotiations as a deal. Use a simple resolution process:
- List each claim with its source, date and exact wording.
- Give greater weight to a dated statement from the yard than to an undated listing or comment.
- Ask the yard which statement is current and whether an older page has been superseded.
- Ask the named cooperative whether it can confirm the location and effective date.
- Report the highest status supported by both the evidence and the wording. If the sources remain inconsistent, describe the conflict and say that the final status is unverified.
Keep copies of pages and messages that matter. A web page can change, and a spoken answer is easier to misremember than a short written confirmation.
When there is no public announcement
No announcement does not prove that no talks are occurring. Businesses may keep negotiations private, may not have chosen a launch date, or may simply have not posted an update. If staff decline to comment, state exactly that the status could not be verified as of the date you checked.
A responsible update identifies what was checked: the yard’s website and official social accounts, direct contact attempts, the named cooperative’s official channel and any relevant directory. It does not name a cooperative as the yard’s partner based solely on a rumor, an employee’s personal comment or a logo that lacks context.
A practical verification checklist
- Write down the lumberyard’s exact legal or trading name, town and state or province.
- Search the official website for joining, member, co-op, cooperative, Do it Best, True Value and Ace.
- Check publication dates and distinguish completed changes, plans and negotiations.
- Review official social posts, newsletters and customer emails.
- Call or email using contact details published by the yard.
- Ask which cooperative is involved and the expected effective date.
- Ask whether the current name, ownership, ordering process, hours or services will change.
- Contact the named cooperative through its official corporate or member-information route.
- Use directories and visible logos only as corroboration.
- Record the result as confirmed, announced, under discussion, indicated but unconfirmed, or unverified.
How to report the result clearly
For a confirmed change, include the yard’s own statement, the date it was published or confirmed, the cooperative’s name and the effective date. For a planned change, call it a plan and preserve the target-date wording. For an unresolved question, say that you contacted the yard, explain what public evidence was available, and state that the relationship could not be verified.
The key distinction is simple: a cooperative’s general membership model explains what may happen, while the lumberyard’s dated announcement and direct confirmation establish what this particular business is doing. Use both, in that order, and you can answer the question without overstating a rumor or mistaking a directory entry for a future transition.
