The Mumbai Traffic Police app and the listed Traffic WhatsApp Helpline (8454999999) add official channels for alerts and incident reporting. They do not replace checking the exact notice, date, direction and vehicle class that apply to your journey.

A reliable Mumbai traffic-checking routine
Plan the trip in this order so that a fast map estimate does not lead you into an officially closed or restricted road.
- Enter the exact trip. In Google Maps, enter your actual starting point and destination, set the departure time to now, and select the correct travel mode. Wait for traffic colors and route times to load.
- Compare every offered route. Note the ETA, delay relative to free-flow travel, tolls, major junctions and whether the route uses a bridge, tunnel, sea link or narrow local road that suits your vehicle.
- Open the police notice list. Visit the Mumbai Traffic Police Public Notice List and look for notices affecting the corridors on each candidate route.
- Read the complete notice. Confirm the effective date and time, direction of travel, road segment, event or work causing the control, vehicle-class exceptions and the named alternate route. A headline alone is not enough.
- Apply the official control. If a closure or diversion covers your trip, treat the police direction as controlling. Use the map only to estimate the resulting travel time and compare legal alternatives.
- Check again before moving. Reopen the map and the notice list shortly before departure. Recheck after a major delay, a weather change, an accident or a new police update.
This routine separates two different questions: How long might each route take? (the map) and Which roads are currently permitted or closed? (the official notice).

Using Google Maps for live traffic
Set up the trip correctly
Search the complete origin and destination rather than a landmark alone. A trip from a residential lane to South Mumbai can produce a different recommendation from a trip beginning on the nearest arterial. Set the travel mode to driving, check the departure time is “now,” and allow location access if you want the app to place you at the correct starting road.
Traffic colors are comparative signals, not legal status: a green segment can still be subject to a temporary police diversion, while a red segment can clear before you reach it. Open the alternate-route selector and record both the total ETA and the delay shown for each option. A route that is only a few minutes faster may be less resilient if it depends on one congested junction or a restricted bridge.
Understand Proactive Traffic Alerts
Google’s 6 November 2025 India announcement says Proactive Traffic Alerts were rolling out to Android users on highways and major roads in Mumbai. The feature is designed to notify a driver about a major disruption or delay ahead and indicate how much time may be added to the ETA. That wording is narrower than “all live incidents”: the announcement does not guarantee coverage of every local street, lane closure, crash, procession or trip.
Keep normal checking habits even when alerts are enabled. An alert may arrive after conditions change, may cover only major roads, or may not appear for a disruption that is minor in the system’s data. Treat it as an additional warning layer, not as proof that an unalerted route is clear.
Compare routes without chasing a misleading minute
- Compare the current ETA and the displayed delay, not ETA alone.
- Check whether the route crosses a corridor named in a current police notice.
- Prefer a route that remains practical for your vehicle, passengers and destination access; a car route is not automatically suitable for a heavy vehicle, taxi pickup or delivery stop.
- Look at how recently the traffic condition appears to have changed. A rapidly worsening red segment deserves another check before departure.
- Do not claim that Google Maps is more accurate or faster than the police app; no authoritative head-to-head test establishes that.
Reading Mumbai Traffic Police notices before you divert
Open the public-notice listing and select the notice that matches your road and date. Public notices cover traffic restrictions, road closures, alternate routes, parking arrangements and event traffic plans. They are the official place to verify whether a suggested corridor is actually open for your trip.
Extract the six details that determine whether a notice applies
- Publication date. A dated item may describe a past event. Do not reuse it simply because the road names look familiar.
- Effective period. Note start and end times, including overnight periods. “Today” in a social post is not a substitute for the notice’s stated validity.
- Exact road segment. Match the named junction, flyover, bridge, lane or approach, not just the broad neighbourhood.
- Direction. A restriction may apply southbound but not northbound, or to an approach while the opposite carriageway remains open.
- Vehicle class or exception. Notices can distinguish cars, heavy vehicles, buses, emergency vehicles, residents or authorised traffic.
- Police-designated alternative. If the notice specifies an alternate road, use that instruction as the starting point, then use the map to navigate within the permitted network.
Save or screenshot the notice details before setting off if the page is difficult to revisit while travelling. The driver should not read a phone while moving; have a passenger handle the check or stop safely.

Why old route advice fails
A route notice can be tied to a procession, construction phase, sporting event, VIP movement, weather incident or a single date. The same road may be open on an ordinary morning and controlled during an event evening. Mumbai Traffic Police’s listing contains dated 2026 items, so always verify the current item’s date and validity rather than treating a familiar diversion as a permanent recommendation.

The app’s Google Play listing describes traffic alerts, challan notifications, citizen reports of traffic violations and incidents, and challan payment. The listing shows an update date of 20 May 2026 and requires mobile-number registration. Install or update it before a trip if you want those official functions available, and review the permissions and registration screens shown on your device.
The listing is a feature description, not an independent performance test. App versions, alert coverage and interface labels can change. Use the app as another official signal, but continue to verify a closure or diversion in the dated public notice. No published evidence here establishes that the app delivers alerts sooner or more accurately than Google Maps.
When to use the Traffic WhatsApp Helpline
Mumbai Traffic Police’s contact page lists 8454999999. The Mumbai Police map page identifies the same number as the Traffic WhatsApp Helpline. You can use the channel to send a concise report or query, including the location, direction, time, visible problem and (when safe) a photo.
The published pages do not promise a response time or continuous monitoring. For an imminent hazard, follow on-road police instructions and emergency procedures rather than waiting for a WhatsApp reply. Never type or photograph while driving; stop in a safe place or ask a passenger.
A dated example of how to handle an alternate-route advisory
A Mumbai Police press release at mumbaipolice.gov.in/files/PressRelease/3591.pdf gives heavy-congestion advisory instructions for southbound traffic from the Western Express Highway/Bandra toward South Mumbai and for northbound traffic from Colaba or CSMT. It names alternatives including the Bandra–Worli Sea Link, routes through Dharavi/Sion, and P. D’Mello Road and Barrister Nath Pai Road.

Use that document only as an example of the level of detail a police advisory can contain. It is not evergreen navigation advice. Before taking any of those roads, open the current notice, check whether the same event or restriction is active, confirm the direction and vehicle eligibility, and compare live ETAs. A route named in a past press release may be unsuitable because the event has ended, a new closure has begun, or traffic has shifted.

When both options are open, make the choice explicit rather than following the first blue line.

If the ETA difference is small, choose the route with clear official status and fewer fragile junctions rather than making an unsafe last-second lane change. Once moving, let the navigation system recalculate only when you can do so safely.
Handling a sudden disruption after departure
When the map turns red or reports a crash
- Continue safely to a place where you can stop; do not operate the phone while driving.
- Check whether a Proactive Traffic Alert explains a major disruption and added ETA.
- Have a passenger open the current police notices, or stop and read them yourself.
- Compare the newly offered routes against the notice’s closure, direction and vehicle rules.
- Follow police personnel, barricades and signed diversions even if the map’s blue line points elsewhere.
When the app and road signs disagree
Give priority to an officer’s direction, barricade or official diversion sign. Map data can lag a temporary control, and a route estimate cannot authorise entry to a closed road. After passing the control, restart navigation from your actual position so that the app does not continue routing through the blocked segment.
When no alert appears
Absence of an alert is not evidence that the road is clear. Google’s announced coverage focuses on highways and major roads and major disruptions; the police app listing likewise does not promise an alert for every incident. Use the notice list, visible signs and safe observation of traffic conditions.
Safety and practical setup for drivers
- Set the destination and review routes before moving.
- Use a secure phone mount or a passenger for navigation; an accessory holds the phone but does not provide traffic data or guarantee a safe route.
- Keep location and mobile data available if your navigation setup depends on them, while respecting your organisation’s device and privacy rules.
- Allow extra time when a notice covers an event, procession, roadwork or heavy-weather period.
- Do not make a sudden U-turn, stop in a traffic lane or cross barricades to follow a faster estimate.
- For construction, delivery or commercial vehicles, verify any vehicle-class restriction before dispatching the trip.
Why checking close to departure matters in Mumbai
The Mumbai Traffic Police homepage says the city’s traffic police manage “over 2.7 million vehicles throughout Mumbai on a daily basis.” The page does not state a publication year or methodology, so treat that as the website’s own figure rather than an independently verified count. At that scale, a small closure or event control can affect several connected corridors, which is why a route selected hours earlier may no longer be the practical choice.
The same homepage uses the safety message, “Follow Traffic Rules for Safety & Security………… Life Is Precious.” The useful instruction for route planning is straightforward: live ETA information helps you compare options, while official controls and safe driving determine which option you may actually use.
