Start with the transportation agency responsible for the road: check its state, county, or city 511 service and construction map for the closure location, dates, lane status, local-access rules, and any signed detour. At the approach, follow every official detour sign. Then use a live navigation app to compare at least two suitable routes, checking delay, road conditions, restrictions, and where each route rejoins the original road. Recheck just before leaving and during the trip because work zones and traffic can change between map updates.
Why the official 511 source comes first
A navigation app is useful for current congestion, but it is not the authority for a construction closure. The agency that owns or manages the road knows whether the work is a full closure, a lane closure, alternating one-way traffic, or a project that still permits access to homes and businesses. Its notices also establish the planned dates, hours, detour route, and restrictions that may not yet appear in a private map.

The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) identifies 511 websites and apps, roadside signs, radio, and private mapping tools as traveler-information channels. Use them in that order of authority: official information tells you what is legally closed and which detour was designed for the project; a live app helps you judge current traffic on that network.
Search for the responsible agency plus “511” or “construction map.” Depending on the location, that may be a state department of transportation, county public-works department, city transportation bureau, or a regional 511 service. Look for an official alert, project page, map, text message, or email subscription rather than relying on an unverified social-media post.

Step 1: Define exactly what is blocked
Before choosing another road, write down the disruption as precisely as possible. A closure several blocks away may have no effect on your trip, while a short bridge closure can eliminate the only practical crossing.
- Road and direction: Record the route name, travel direction, and nearest intersection, exit, bridge, or landmark.
- Closure type: Distinguish a full closure from a single-lane closure, shoulder work, alternating one-way traffic, or a temporary stoppage.
- Time window: Note the announced start and end dates, daily hours, overnight work, and whether the schedule is weather-dependent.
- Access: Check whether residents, deliveries, customers, buses, or emergency vehicles can reach addresses inside the work area.
- Movement at the site: Determine whether traffic is being escorted, controlled by a flagger, or diverted before the work zone.
Keep the original notice or screenshot with its timestamp. If the sign at the road differs from an older online notice, treat the sign and current agency update as the more recent instruction.
Step 2: Check 511 and agency construction maps
What to look for on the map
Open the official map at a useful zoom level and select the project or closure icon. Confirm the road segment, direction, active phase, and expected reopening. Many agency maps also show speeds, crashes, lane closures, detour routes, cameras, and message signs. For example, Indiana’s 511IN service combines construction information with current speeds, incidents, closures, and detour routes when those details are available.
Read the project description instead of relying on the map symbol alone. A project may move from shoulder work to a full nighttime closure, or from one side of a divided highway to the other. Look for separate entries for each direction and for notes about weekends, events, school hours, or weather delays.
Use alerts for changes
Subscribe to the agency’s official text or email alerts when the trip will continue over several days. Alerts are especially valuable for a long-running bridge, utility, or pavement project whose phases change. They do not replace a check immediately before departure; an alert can be issued after you last opened the map.
What official information can and cannot tell you
An agency notice can confirm the legal closure, planned timing, and designated detour. It may not predict the delay on every neighboring street. FHWA notes that travelers value information about the cause of an event, expected delay, alternate-route availability, and potential time savings, but those estimates depend on conditions at the moment you travel. Use the official notice for certainty about the work and a live traffic layer for conditions around it.

Step 3: Read the signs and trace the signed detour
Begin following the detour before reaching the barricade. Advance-warning signs may direct you to a turn several intersections earlier than the physical closure. At each decision point, look for the route shield, arrow, or destination shown on the detour sign, and do not assume that the first turn is the entire route.

The Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), Part 6C, Section 6C.09, states: “Detours should be clearly signed over their entire length so that road users can easily use existing highways to return to the original highway.” A detour is temporary rerouting over an existing highway, not simply the shortest line around a barricade.
- At the approach: Slow down, read the advance-warning sign, and move into the lane required for the detour before cones or barriers narrow the road.
- At the departure point: Note the street or highway where the detour leaves the closed road. If your app proposes a different turn, compare it with the sign rather than ignoring the sign.
- Along the route: Continue looking for confirmation signs after every major intersection. A route that seems to end may simply require the next signed turn.
- At the return point: Identify where the detour rejoins the original highway and confirm that you are traveling in the correct direction. Do not turn back toward the closure unless an official sign directs you to do so.
If a sign is missing, knocked over, or contradicts another sign, slow down and contact the road authority or local law-enforcement non-emergency number when safe. Do not improvise a shortcut through a work area.
Step 4: Compare at least two candidate routes
Once you know the official detour, inspect it alongside one or more alternatives in a live navigation app. Set the actual departure time and vehicle type if the app supports those settings. A route that is fastest under normal conditions may be slower during the morning school period, a game, a crash, or a second construction project.
| Criterion | Questions to ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Current delay | How long is the present delay compared with the app’s normal travel time? Is the delay growing? | A short route can lose its advantage when a queue is building at a signal or merge. |
| Closure certainty | Is the closure confirmed by the agency, and when was the map or alert updated? | A recent official status is more reliable than an old user report or an unverified pin. |
| Capacity | Can the parallel road handle diverted traffic, and are there bottlenecks, bridges, or one-lane sections? | Traffic moved off a major highway can overwhelm a narrow local street. |
| Safety and complexity | How many turns, signals, merges, railroad crossings, and pedestrian crossings are involved? | Fewer complicated decisions reduce wrong turns and conflict in unfamiliar areas. |
| Surface and width | Is the pavement hard-surfaced and wide enough for your vehicle? Are gravel or seasonal segments involved? | Automated routes can include roads that are technically open but unsuitable for the traffic they receive. |
| Grades and curves | Are there steep grades, tight curves, limited sight distance, or winter exposure? | These conditions affect braking, towing, buses, heavy loads, and emergency access. |
| Restrictions | Are there height, weight, width, turning, hazardous-material, or seasonal limits? | A route legal for a passenger car may be illegal or impassable for a larger vehicle. |
| Services | Where are fuel, food, rest areas, charging, and emergency services? | A longer rural detour may require a fuel or restroom stop before leaving the main corridor. |
| Rejoin point | Does the route return to the original highway beyond the work zone, or will you need another local connection? | A clear rejoin point makes the detour easier to follow and reduces the chance of circling back. |
| Neighborhood effects | Does the option pass a school, dense residential area, bike route, or active pedestrian district? | Choosing a route that minimizes conflict and cut-through traffic is part of responsible planning. |
Write down the normal travel time, current delay, and route length for each candidate. Treat the app’s arrival time as an estimate, not a guarantee. FHWA’s alternate-route guidance emphasizes proximity, access, safety, capacity, congestion, travel time, pavement, grades, fuel, rest stops, and food; use those factors instead of optimizing for minutes alone.

Step 5: Check that the route fits your vehicle
Passenger cars and motorcycles
Confirm that the surface is paved if your vehicle has limited clearance, and watch for narrow lanes, sharp curves, loose gravel, and steep descents. Motorcyclists should be especially cautious about temporary steel plates, grooved pavement, dust, and uneven shoulders. A road shown as open may still be a poor choice during rain, snow, or darkness.

Trucks, buses, RVs, and trailers
Before diverting, verify posted bridge clearance, weight limits, legal width, turning radii, and grade restrictions. Check whether the route has a low overpass, a hairpin turn, a narrow bridge, or a segment that prohibits trailers. Allow for the vehicle’s rear swing and stopping distance at temporary signals.
Hazardous-material loads
Do not assume that a general detour applies to a hazardous-material carrier. Confirm route designations, tunnel or bridge rules, placarding requirements, and any local restrictions with the responsible transportation agency and your carrier’s compliance staff. If the app’s route conflicts with a posted restriction, the restriction controls.
Accessibility and service vehicles
Paratransit, school buses, delivery vans, and emergency-support vehicles may need curb access, turning space, or a reliable stop location that a standard car route does not provide. Check temporary bus stops, closed sidewalks, loading zones, and accessible entrances when the destination is inside or next to the project.
Why an app may send you through construction
Private navigation services combine road-closure feeds, user reports, historical speeds, GPS traces, and routing rules. A closure can appear late, apply only to one direction, or be coded as a lane restriction rather than a complete block. The service may therefore select a road that is open in its database but unsuitable for your vehicle or for the volume of diverted traffic.
WSDOT specifically warns that automated corrections around work zones may send drivers onto gravel, narrow, or curvy roads. Treat a suggested shortcut as a proposal that requires inspection, not as permission to disregard signs.
How to correct an unsuitable suggestion
- Compare the app’s route with the official detour map and the signs at the road.
- Inspect the proposed segment using the map’s road-type, satellite, or street-level information when available.
- Check the road authority’s restrictions for bridges, grades, width, weight, and seasonal conditions.
- Use the app’s “avoid road,” “add a stop,” or equivalent function to keep the route on the signed detour when the alternative is unsuitable.
- If the app repeatedly directs traffic through a closed segment, report the closure through its correction tool only when stopped safely; continue following physical signs.
Never interact with a phone while moving. Set the route before departure, use voice guidance, and pull over before changing settings.

Step 6: Recheck before departure and during the trip
Construction is staged work. The best route on Monday morning may be wrong after a lane shift, overnight paving, a weather delay, or an incident on the detour. FHWA recommends revising alternate-route plans as construction stages change.
Recommended Free Tools
- Before leaving: Refresh the 511 map, read the latest project note, and check the app’s live traffic layer.
- At the last safe stop: Confirm that the closure location, departure time, and vehicle restrictions still match your plan.
- At the approach: Give priority to current signs, flaggers, police, and temporary signals over an older route instruction.
- If traffic stalls: Stop in a safe location before checking whether the delay is caused by the construction, a crash, or a newly closed detour.
- If conditions change en route: Recheck the official source and choose a new route only from a safe stopping point; do not make a sudden turn in the work zone.
Build extra time into an appointment when the project has no reliable reopening time or when the detour uses a low-capacity road. Published guidance does not establish one universal percentage of time saved by any alternate route; actual savings depend on the project phase and traffic when you travel.
When the signed detour and the app disagree
For a legal closure, the signed detour governs. Continue on it unless an official traffic controller directs you elsewhere. An app may be faster because it knows a side street, but that street may lack the capacity, pavement, clearance, or authorization needed for diverted traffic.
If the signed path is blocked by a second incident, look for a police officer, flagger, portable message board, or updated agency alert. Ask for clarification at a safe location. Do not drive around barricades, through cones, or onto a closed shoulder to recover the original route.
For local access, follow signs that distinguish “road closed” from “local traffic only.” If you are visiting a business or residence inside the project, call ahead to learn which access point remains open and whether the entrance is reachable from a particular direction.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteOffline planning for weak coverage or a dead phone
Keep a current state or regional road atlas in the vehicle as a backup. Choose an edition that covers the entire travel area and check its publication date. Mark the closure, the official detour’s departure and rejoin points, fuel locations, and possible stopping places before leaving.

A printed atlas cannot show a live closure, queue, or lane shift. Use it to understand the road network when cellular coverage fails, the phone battery is low, or app data conflicts with signs. A charged power bank, vehicle charger, and saved agency phone number make the backup more useful.
Make an offline route card
- Write the closed road and cross streets at the top.
- List each detour turn in order, including the highway or street name and direction.
- Record the point where the route rejoins the original road.
- Note fuel, rest, and emergency-service locations along the alternative.
- Add vehicle restrictions and a second candidate route if the first detour is rural or capacity-limited.
Examples of choosing between common detours
A bridge closure on a major highway
The official map shows a full closure and a signed crossing several miles upstream. The app offers a shorter local bridge. Compare clearance, weight limits, approach width, and current queueing at both crossings. A passenger car may use the local bridge if it is open and signed, while a loaded truck may need the designated highway detour.
Nighttime lane closures in a downtown corridor
The agency permits daytime traffic but closes two lanes after a stated evening hour. Check whether the closure repeats nightly and whether a nearby event will increase demand. An alternate street with more signals may be safer and more predictable than a narrow alley-like route, even if the app estimates a similar time.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Rural paving with a gravel shortcut
The app reroutes around a queue onto an unpaved county road. Inspect surface, width, curves, grades, weather, and access before accepting it. If the road is unsuitable or unsigned, remain on the official detour and accept the delay rather than risking a stuck vehicle or conflict with local residents.
School-zone traffic near a neighborhood detour
A closure sends traffic past a school during arrival or dismissal. Compare the signed route with a parallel arterial that has adequate capacity and fewer pedestrian conflicts. Follow any temporary school-zone speed limit and do not use residential streets merely to save a few minutes.
A reusable checklist
- Identify the road, direction, nearest landmark, closure type, dates, hours, and local-access status.
- Open the responsible state, county, or city 511 service and construction map.
- Read the project note for active phase, direction, detour, and reopening uncertainty.
- Approach slowly and follow advance-warning, arrow, and confirmation signs.
- Trace the entire signed detour to its rejoin point.
- Compare at least two routes for delay, capacity, safety, pavement, grade, restrictions, services, and neighborhood impacts.
- Verify clearance, weight, width, turning, hazardous-material, and grade rules for the actual vehicle.
- Refresh official and live traffic information immediately before departure.
- Keep an atlas, charged phone, and offline route card available.
- When sources conflict, obey current signs and traffic controllers, then report the discrepancy safely to the road authority or app.
Bottom line for a construction detour
Use the transportation agency’s 511 information to establish what is closed and which detour is authorized. Use signs to stay on that route, and use a live navigation app only to compare traffic and identify a suitable alternative. Check the route against your vehicle’s dimensions and restrictions, refresh the information before leaving and when conditions change, and keep a printed atlas as a coverage-independent backup. This combination is more dependable than trusting any single map or an automatically generated shortcut.
