The process takes roughly 15 seconds of holding and cannot be undone. First, identify your speaker generation so you use the correct reset control.
Before you reset
A factory reset returns the speaker to its default state, erases its device configuration, disconnects it from members of the Google Home household, and requires setup again. It is appropriate when you are selling, gifting, or returning the speaker, or when persistent setup problems remain after ordinary troubleshooting.

If the speaker is temporarily frozen, has briefly lost connectivity, or is behaving unusually, try a restart first. A restart preserves your settings; a factory reset does not.

Identify your Google speaker
| Device | How to identify it | Reset control |
|---|---|---|
| Google Nest Mini, 2nd generation | Has a wall-mount screw slot on the back. | Center of the top surface, after switching the microphone off. |
| Google Home Mini, 1st generation | Does not have the rear wall-mount screw slot. | Small button on the underside, below the power cord. |
These are different devices with different reset procedures. See Google’s device identification and controls guide if you are unsure which Mini you own.
How to reset a Google Nest Mini, 2nd generation
- Keep the Nest Mini plugged in.
- Slide the microphone switch on the side to off. The indicator lights should turn orange.
- Press and hold the center of the top surface, where the four lights are located. Do not use the side volume controls.
- After approximately 5 seconds, the reset begins. Continue holding the top for about 10 more seconds.
- Release only after the speaker plays the sound confirming that it is resetting.
- Wait for the reset to finish. The Nest Mini must be set up again before it can be used.
Google describes the timing in two stages: hold for about five seconds until the reset starts, then keep holding until the confirmation sound. “Hold for about 15 seconds” is a useful approximation, but releasing at the first five-second point may stop you before the reset is complete. The complete procedure is documented in Google’s factory-reset instructions.
How to reset a Google Home Mini, 1st generation
Use this procedure only if your speaker is the older Google Home Mini without the rear wall-mount screw slot:

- Continue holding for about 10 more seconds, until you hear the confirmation sound.
- Release the button and wait for the reset to finish.
What a factory reset erases
The reset clears data and settings stored on the speaker, returns it to its factory state, and disconnects it from members of the previous Google Home household. The operation is irreversible, and the speaker will need to be configured again.
This does not establish that every item of Google Account data, Assistant activity, or cloud history is deleted. A device reset should not be treated as a complete deletion of all information associated with your Google Account.
Do you need to remove it from Google Home first?
No. For a Nest Mini that is being sold, given away, or returned, the physical factory reset is the essential step. Reset the speaker while you still have access to it and it is powered.

Afterward, the old device entry may still need separate cleanup in the Google Home app. Removing an entry from the app and physically resetting the speaker are separate actions: app cleanup does not replace the factory reset before transfer. Google provides broader guidance for removing devices and managing household associations. App labels and navigation can change, so follow the current instructions shown in Google Home.
Set up the speaker again after resetting
A reset does not leave the speaker ready for normal use. Complete the setup flow in the Google Home app to connect it to Wi-Fi, assign it to a room, choose a name, and configure it for the intended Google account or household.

The lights do not turn orange
On a second-generation Nest Mini, confirm that the microphone switch is fully in the off position before touching the top. If the lights do not change, check that the speaker is powered and that you are working with a Nest Mini rather than a first-generation Home Mini.

You cannot find the reset control
- A rear wall-mount screw slot means you have a Nest Mini, 2nd generation; use the top-center procedure.
- No rear slot usually means you have a Home Mini, 1st generation; look underneath for the reset button.
- If neither description matches, you may have a different Google speaker or display.
The Nest Mini does not reset when you hold the top
Switch the microphone off first, wait for the orange lights, and press the center of the top rather than the side controls. Hold through both stages: approximately five seconds for the reset to begin and approximately 10 additional seconds until the confirmation sound.
You released the control too early
If you stopped holding after about five seconds, repeat the procedure and continue until the audible confirmation. The reset-start point is not the completion signal.

Try a reboot if the speaker is frozen, remembering that a reboot does not erase settings. If the correct physical reset still fails after checking power, generation, microphone position, touch location, and timing, use Google’s official troubleshooting and support guidance rather than unofficial button combinations or firmware procedures.
You only need to change Wi-Fi
A factory reset may be unnecessary for a straightforward network change. Consult Google’s separate Wi-Fi-change guide before erasing the speaker.
Quick Recap
When not to factory reset
- Microphone muted: turn the physical microphone switch back on.
- Volume too low: use the side volume controls.
- Temporary glitch: restart the speaker first.
- Routine, room, or account setting: change the relevant setting in Google Home instead of erasing the device.
