A defensible estimate adds the concrete volume of each footing, slab, beam, column, stair and concrete wall, applies the mix specified for that element, converts the cement portion using the local bag size, and then adds a clearly identified allowance. Brick or block mortar is calculated separately.
The method below lets you produce a transparent quantity for ordering or checking a contractor’s figure without confusing a classroom nominal mix with an engineered structural design.

Why floor area alone cannot tell you the cement quantity
Two houses with the same floor area can require very different cement quantities. Their foundation widths, soil conditions, number of storeys, slab thicknesses, beam and column sizes, stair geometry, retaining walls, openings and concrete grades may all differ. A house on strip footings does not have the same concrete volume as one on a reinforced raft or a heavily framed two-storey structure.
Cement is also only one component of concrete. The specified water-to-cementitious-materials ratio, aggregate grading, required slump, exposure and strength affect the cement content. The American Concrete Institute (ACI) states in FAQ 752: “The w/cm is selected on the basis of the required strength or exposure conditions.” Its guidance also notes that water quantity depends on the required slump and aggregate size. Treating a convenient site ratio as universal can therefore understate or overstate the required cement.

Information to collect before calculating
Gather these documents and decisions before opening a spreadsheet:
- Dimensioned architectural and structural drawings, including foundation, slab, beam, column and stair details.
- The schedule of concrete grades or mix designs for each element, plus exposure and durability requirements.
- Foundation type, total footing or wall lengths, founding depth and any ground beams or retaining walls.
- Slab thicknesses, thickened edges, suspended slabs, steps, ramps and external concrete that belongs in the order.
- Reinforcement and embedded-item details that may displace a small amount of concrete.
- Wall type, unit dimensions, joint thickness, openings and the specified mortar for masonry.
- The cement bag mass and the local convention for converting cement volume to bags. A 50 kg bag is not interchangeable with a 40 kg or 25 kg bag.
- The allowance agreed with the quantity surveyor, contractor or supplier for cutting, spillage, uneven excavation and placement losses.
If the drawings do not state a mix or strength, do not invent one for load-bearing work. Ask the designer or supplier for the project specification. ACI’s Guide to Residential Concrete Construction (ACI PRC-332.1-18) describes typical residential practice but says illustrations must be checked against applicable codes and project specifications.
Step 1: Make a concrete element schedule
List every concrete item as a separate line. A useful schedule has columns for element, location, dimensions, quantity, net volume, specified mix, cement factor and ordered quantity. Keep different grades separate even when their shapes are identical.
Typical items to include
- Pad, strip, stepped or raft footings.
- Foundation and retaining walls.
- Ground-bearing slabs, suspended slabs, thickened slab edges and blinding concrete where cement is included in the order.
- Columns, posts, piers and reinforced cores.
- Ground beams, ring beams, lintels and suspended beams.
- Stairs, landings, ramps, plinths and concrete porches.
- Driveways, tanks, paths or other external concrete if they are part of the project.
Do not combine an ordinary slab mix with a higher-strength column mix. The volume total is useful for logistics, but cement must be calculated from each mix separately.
Step 2: Calculate the net wet volume
Convert all dimensions to one unit, normally metres, before multiplying. Calculate the geometric volume of each item and then add only items that use the same specified mix.
| Shape or item | Calculation | Unit check |
|---|---|---|
| Rectangular slab, footing or beam | Length × width × thickness | m × m × m = m³ |
| Column or pier | Cross-sectional area × height | m² × m = m³ |
| Circular column | π × radius² × height | m³ |
| Wall | Length × height × thickness | m³ |
| Irregular stair or ramp | Break into rectangles, triangles and landings; add the parts | m³ |
Use the dimensions actually shown on the drawings. For a strip footing, multiply the total centre-line length by footing width and thickness, then account for steps or changes in width as separate segments. For a column, multiply the cross-sectional area by the clear concrete height; do not substitute the storey height if a beam occupies part of it.
Check units and omissions
- Convert millimetres to metres: 200 mm is 0.20 m, not 200 m.
- Do not count a beam twice where it is already included in a slab or wall detail.
- Measure each footing step, drop panel, haunch and thickened edge shown on the section.
- Include concrete below finished floor level and small items such as thresholds only if they are in the scope.
- Record net geometric volume before adding any allowance. This keeps design quantity and ordering contingency visible.
Step 3: Apply the specified mix or mix design
Engineered structural concrete
For structural members, the design mix or supplier batch design is the controlling input. ACI PRC-211.1-22 explains that proportions are selected to satisfy strength, exposure, workability and aggregate requirements. Ask the ready-mix supplier for the cementitious-material content per cubic metre, or obtain the approved proportioning sheet. Multiply that cement content by the measured volume for the relevant grade.

This approach is not the same as saying “one part cement to two parts sand to four parts stone.” A nominal ratio can be a teaching or preliminary estimating convention; it does not demonstrate that the finished concrete meets the specified strength or durability.
Nominal-volume estimate when no design mix is available
For a clearly labelled preliminary estimate, the BharatSkills Civil Draughtsman Trade Theory material (2022) uses 1.52–1.54 m³ of dry ingredients for each 1 m³ of finished concrete. It allocates that dry volume according to the total parts in the nominal ratio. This is an estimating assumption, not a universal approved mix.
Write every assumption beside the calculation:
- Finished concrete volume.
- Dry-volume factor selected (for example, 1.54).
- Mix parts and their total.
- Cement share of the dry volume.
- Bag mass and local bag-volume convention.
- Allowance, if any, added after the net calculation.
Worked one-cubic-metre illustration from BharatSkills
For 1 m³ of finished concrete using the instructional 1:2:4 nominal mix:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Total mix parts = 1 + 2 + 4 = 7.
- Dry materials = 1.54 m³.
- Cement volume = 1.54 ÷ 7 = approximately 0.22 m³.
- The material treats a 50 kg bag as approximately 1/30 m³ for practical calculation.
- Using that convention gives about 6.6 bags before rounding; the source’s worked example reports 6.4 bags because of its intermediate rounding and convention.
Use the published 6.4-bag result only as the stated BharatSkills illustration. It is not a guaranteed yield, a supplier batch design or a prescription for house foundations. The calculation appears in the BharatSkills Civil Draughtsman Trade Theory PDF.
Step 4: Worked hypothetical house takeoff
The following example demonstrates the arithmetic only. It assumes a hypothetical single-storey plan and applies the same instructional 1:2:4 factor to every concrete item so the method is easy to follow. Real footings, columns, slabs and beams may require different grades and must be recalculated from their approved designs.
| Element | Dimensions and quantity | Net volume (m³) |
|---|---|---|
| Strip footings | 48 m total length × 0.60 m × 0.20 m | 5.76 |
| Ground slab | 10 m × 8 m × 0.10 m | 8.00 |
| Columns | 8 × (0.25 m × 0.25 m × 3 m) | 1.50 |
| Ring beam | 48 m × 0.20 m × 0.25 m | 2.40 |
| Stair waist slab | 3 m × 1 m × 0.15 m | 0.45 |
| Total | 18.11 |
Using the BharatSkills illustration of 6.4 bags per cubic metre:
- Net cement estimate = 18.11 × 6.4 = 115.9 bags, rounded to 116 bags for the net calculation.
- For a planning scenario that chooses a 5% allowance, ordered quantity = 115.9 × 1.05 = 121.7 bags, rounded up to 122 bags.
The 5% figure in this example is a declared planning choice, not a universally correct allowance. Uneven excavations, difficult access, site storage, batching method and supplier minimums may justify a different figure. If the footings and columns use one approved cement content and the slab uses another, calculate each group independently and add the resulting bag quantities.

| Quantity | Meaning | When it changes |
|---|---|---|
| Net wet concrete volume | Geometric volume of finished concrete in the work | Dimensions, thickness, openings and element count |
| Dry ingredient volume | Estimating conversion used for loose ingredients before mixing | Chosen convention; not a universal constant |
| Cement volume or mass | Cement share of the dry volume, or approved cementitious content | Mix ratio, strength, exposure and supplier design |
| Ordered bags | Cement quantity rounded to whole local bags plus declared allowance | Bag mass, packaging, waste and purchasing practice |
A supplier quote may be stated in cubic metres of ready-mixed concrete rather than bags. In that case, confirm the cementitious content and grade with the supplier instead of converting a nominal site ratio into bags.
Estimate masonry mortar separately
Mortar is not the same calculation as structural concrete. Start with the walling schedule: unit type and dimensions, wall thickness, face area, joint thickness, bedding method, openings, lintels and the specified mortar mix.
A practical mortar takeoff sequence
- Calculate gross wall area from length × height for each wall thickness.
- Subtract doors, windows and other openings shown on the drawings.
- Count the specified bricks or blocks, or calculate unit volume from the manufacturer’s dimensions and the net wall volume.
- Allow for bedding and perpend joints according to the unit and construction method.
- Determine the resulting mortar volume and apply the specified mortar mix, not the concrete mix.
- Convert the cement portion using the actual bag mass and add the selected allowance.
Published masonry rules of thumb have narrow assumptions. The Concrete Masonry & Hardscapes Association’s TEK 04-02A, for example, says a 70 lb (31.8 kg) masonry-cement bag yields about 30 hollow units under its specified face-shell-bedding assumption. That figure is for the stated US-market masonry-cement product and bedding method; it is not interchangeable with a general-purpose Portland-cement bag or a different block system. CMHA itself cautions that estimating quantities should be checked against rational judgment.
If your wall is plastered, grouted, reinforced or uses full-bed rather than face-shell bedding, use the relevant specification or supplier data. Do not subtract a generic “mortar percentage” from the concrete calculation.
Bag size, conversion and rounding rules
Bag conversions are a frequent source of hidden error. A bag’s mass is printed on the package, while volume depends on bulk density and the estimating convention. The BharatSkills example uses approximately 1/30 m³ for a 50 kg bag. A local estimator may use a different convention, so record both the bag mass and the conversion basis.
- Keep calculations in cubic metres until the cement quantity is determined.
- Do not mix a 50 kg-bag factor with 40 kg bags.
- Do not round each footing, column or beam separately; total the relevant mix first, then round up.
- Round ordered bags upward to whole bags only after the allowance is applied.
- If a supplier sells bulk cement or delivers ready-mix, use its stated mass or cementitious content rather than a bag-volume shortcut.
How to choose and show an allowance
No single wastage percentage applies to every house. A quantity-surveying exercise may use a factor for its own assumptions, but that exercise does not establish a universal allowance. Make the uncertainty visible instead of burying it in a rounded total.
Show three numbers in the order sheet:
- Net design quantity: measured volume and calculated cement for the drawings.
- Declared allowance: the percentage or fixed quantity agreed for excavation variation, handling, spillage, overbreak or site conditions.
- Order quantity: net plus allowance, rounded to the supplier’s delivery unit.
For ready-mix, an allowance may be expressed in additional concrete volume rather than cement bags. Confirm whether the supplier charges by the delivered cubic metre, truck load or batch, and whether a partial load is practical.

A worksheet you can hand to a builder or supplier
Use one row per element and retain the calculation behind every total:
| Element/location | Dimensions and count | Net m³ | Specified grade or mortar | Cement content or ratio | Bag mass/conversion | Allowance | Order quantity |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Example: strip footing | 48 × 0.60 × 0.20 | 5.76 | As drawing | As approved design | Local bag basis | Agreed % | Round up |
| Example: ground slab | 10 × 8 × 0.10 | 8.00 | As drawing | As approved design | Local bag basis | Agreed % | Round up |
Attach the relevant plan or section reference to each row. When a supplier revises a mix design, change the cement-content cell rather than altering the measured volume without explanation.
Final verification before ordering
- Check every concrete element against the latest structural drawing revision.
- Confirm that each line has the correct grade, exposure class and supplier or designer mix basis.
- Verify bag mass, product type and local volume convention.
- Review foundation dimensions against the geotechnical or engineering requirements.
- Separate concrete, masonry mortar, grout, plaster and screed quantities.
- State the allowance and why it was selected.
- Have the final structural quantity checked by the engineer, quantity surveyor or concrete supplier before placement.
The ACI residential guide is useful for understanding footings, walls, slabs, materials, proportions, placement and testing, but its typical-practice illustrations are not a substitute for local code or the project specification. A final order should match the approved design and the supplier’s batch documentation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I estimate cement from the house’s floor area?
Not responsibly for ordering. Floor area can provide only a rough sense check; the estimate must be built from the measured concrete elements and their specified cement contents.
What should I do if the drawings show concrete dimensions but no mix?
Pause the structural estimate and request the required strength, exposure classification or approved mix design from the engineer or concrete supplier. Do not choose a ratio solely because it is common locally.
Should mortar bags be added to the foundation concrete bags?
No. Masonry mortar depends on unit dimensions, jointing and bedding method. Take it off separately and use the mortar specification and product data.
Why does the 1:2:4 illustration produce different bag figures in different calculations?
Dry-volume factors, bulk-volume conventions and intermediate rounding differ. The BharatSkills example reports 6.4 bags per cubic metre under its stated assumptions; changing the bag mass or convention changes the result.
How should I handle a ready-mix order?
Order the measured concrete volume by grade and ask the supplier to confirm the cementitious content, batch design, minimum load and any surcharge for partial loads. Do not convert it to site-mixed bags unless that is actually how the concrete will be produced.
