The safest way to protect your car in a storm is to slow down in rain and turn around when water covers the road. You cannot reliably judge floodwater depth from the driver’s seat, and water may conceal a washed-out roadway, debris, open drains or a moving current. The National Weather Service (NWS) says, “NEVER drive through flooded roadways – you do not know the condition of the road under the water.”
Use the guidance below for ordinary wet roads, ponding and flood emergencies. None of the depth figures is a permission to cross; conditions vary with water speed, road damage, vehicle design and visibility.

Rain and standing water are different driving hazards
Rain mainly reduces tire grip, visibility and stopping performance. Standing or moving water can also make a vehicle float, stall, lose steering control or be swept away. Treat a road covered by water as closed unless an official authority has clearly reopened it.
| Situation | Main risk | Best decision |
|---|---|---|
| Light or moderate rain with clear visibility | Longer stopping distances and reduced traction | Slow moderately, increase following distance and use headlights when visibility requires it. |
| Heavy rain, spray or ponding in your lane | Hydroplaning, poor visibility and hidden road defects | Reduce speed smoothly, avoid abrupt inputs and delay or reroute if conditions continue to worsen. |
| Water covering any part of the roadway | Unknown depth, submerged damage, debris, stalling and loss of control | Turn around. Do not drive around barricades. |
| Fast-moving water crossing the road | Vehicle flotation or being carried downstream | Do not enter. Move to higher ground and follow emergency instructions. |
NHTSA summarizes the wet-road problem plainly: “It’s harder to control or stop your vehicle on a slick road.” The solution is not a special crossing technique; it is reducing exposure to the hazard.

Prepare the car before a rainy trip
A few checks reduce the chance that a manageable rainstorm becomes a visibility or traction emergency. Perform them before leaving, not while stopped in a travel lane.
Check tires
- Inspect all four tires for adequate tread, uneven wear, cuts, bulges and embedded objects.
- Set pressure according to the vehicle manufacturer’s cold-tire specification, usually found on the driver-door label or in the owner’s manual. Do not use the maximum pressure molded into the tire sidewall as the vehicle setting.
- Remember that worn tread has less ability to channel water away from the contact patch. A tire that feels acceptable on dry pavement may lose wet-road margin sooner.
Check wipers and washer fluid
The NWS advises replacing old or brittle wipers. Replace blades that leave unwiped arcs, chatter, smear water or have split rubber. Fill the washer reservoir with fluid suitable for your climate; a clean windshield is essential when spray from other vehicles is heavy.
Check every light
Confirm that low beams, tail lights, brake lights, turn signals and hazard flashers work. Use headlights when rain reduces visibility so your vehicle is easier for others to see. Avoid relying on daytime running lights if they do not illuminate the rear of your vehicle.
Plan around the weather
- Check current weather warnings, flash-flood alerts and local road-closure information before departure.
- Choose routes that avoid low-water crossings, dips, washes, drainage channels and known flood-prone underpasses.
- Allow extra travel time. Rushing encourages late braking and abrupt steering.
- Tell someone your route when severe weather is possible, and keep a charged phone in the cabin.
How to drive safely in ordinary rain
- Reduce speed to match conditions. The posted limit assumes normal conditions; it is not automatically safe during heavy rain, spray or ponding. Slow enough to preserve a clear view and control, without making sudden speed changes.
- Increase following distance. Leave substantially more space than you would on dry pavement. The extra gap gives you time to stop if the vehicle ahead brakes or throws a sheet of spray across your view.
- Use smooth controls. Brake, accelerate and steer progressively. Sudden inputs can exceed the available grip, particularly when one side of the car crosses a puddle.
- Keep both hands available for steering. Avoid distractions and do not use cruise control when standing water or changing traction is present. Managing speed yourself lets you ease off the accelerator immediately if grip changes.
- Look well ahead. Scan for dark patches, ripples, spray from oncoming traffic, lane depressions and water flowing across the road. Do not fixate on the vehicle immediately ahead.
- Use lane position carefully. Follow the portion of the lane with the least visible water while staying within lane markings. Avoid driving through pooled water at the road edge, where drainage may be blocked.
- Do not brake hard merely because you see water. If you can safely change lanes or slow before the puddle, do so gradually. If an obstacle or emergency requires braking, apply firm, controlled pressure and keep steering pointed where you intend to go.
Hydroplaning is possible at surprisingly modest speeds. The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) notes that, under described conditions, even a thin layer of water can initiate hydroplaning at speeds as low as 35 mph. That figure is a risk example, not a safe-speed cutoff: tire condition, water depth, road texture, load and weather all change the result.
What to do if the car begins to hydroplane
FHWA says, “A vehicle that is hydroplaning behaves similarly to a vehicle on ice.” The tires have temporarily lost enough contact with the pavement that steering and braking response can be weak or delayed.

- Stay calm and look where you want to travel. Do not stare at a guardrail, ditch or other hazard.
- Ease off the accelerator. Let the vehicle slow gradually. Do not make a sharp turn or abruptly lift off in a way that unsettles the car.
- Keep the steering steady. Hold the wheel in the intended direction with small corrections only. Avoid yanking the wheel to counter a momentary drift.
- Wait for tire contact to return. Once the tires reconnect with the road, make gentle steering or braking adjustments. If you must brake, do it progressively while maintaining a safe path.
Different vehicles, drivetrains and electronic stability systems respond differently, so no single maneuver guarantees the same result in every car. The most reliable protection is entering the water at a lower speed or avoiding the pooled area altogether.
Standing water: when to turn around
Turn around whenever water covers the roadway or you cannot see the pavement clearly. Do not drive around a barricade, move a cone or assume that another vehicle’s successful crossing proves the route is safe. The NWS warns that “The water depth is very easy to misjudge, and the road itself may be damaged or destroyed underneath.”
Why a shallow-looking crossing can be dangerous
- Depth is deceptive. Moving water, glare, darkness and ripples hide the boundary between pavement and deeper channels.
- The road may be gone. Floodwater can scour soil beneath asphalt, wash out shoulders and expose culverts or drop-offs.
- Water has force. A vehicle’s weight does not make it immune to a current, especially when water acts on its side.
- Debris and contamination are hidden. Branches, rocks, utility lines, chemicals and sharp metal may be submerged.
- Other traffic creates waves. A passing truck can raise water against your intake, electrical components or doors.
Official warning figures, not crossing limits
Agencies publish approximate thresholds to illustrate how quickly danger develops. They describe different effects and conditions, so they must not be combined into a “maximum safe depth.”
| Agency and figure | What the guidance illustrates | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| NWS Tulsa: about 6 inches of water | May reach the bottom of many passenger cars, with possible loss of control or stalling. | Treat even a shallow-looking covering as a reason to stop and turn around. |
| NWS Tulsa: about 1 foot of water | May float many vehicles. | Do not enter; flotation can remove steering and braking control. |
| NHTSA: 12 inches of rushing water | Can carry away most cars. | Moving water is the critical factor; never test a current with a vehicle. |
| NHTSA: 2 feet of rushing water | Can carry away most trucks and SUVs. | Greater ground clearance does not make a flooded crossing safe. |
These figures are warnings from the named agencies, not measurements of a passable depth. A slower current, a faster current, a small car, a large SUV, a damaged road or a different water level can change the outcome.
Night driving and low-water crossings
Avoid low-water crossings, washes, dips and drainage channels during flooding, especially at night. Darkness removes visual depth cues, and headlights can reflect off the surface rather than reveal what lies beneath it. If an official sign or barrier says the road is closed, use another route or stop in a safe location until authorities provide an alternative.

If water reaches the vehicle or the engine stalls
Your priority is survival, not saving the car. If water is rising around the vehicle or the car stalls in a flooded area, follow emergency instructions and move toward higher ground when you can do so without entering a stronger current or another obvious hazard.

- Assess the exit. If the doors open and outside water is not forcing you into danger, leave and move to higher ground. If doors will not open because of pressure, use a side window if it can be lowered or broken with an emergency tool designed for that purpose.
- Do not climb onto the roof as a first move. A roof can expose you to currents, debris and downed power lines. Use it only when directed by emergency personnel or when it is the only viable escape.
- Call emergency services when safe. Give your location and follow instructions from rescuers or local authorities.
- Never walk or drive into moving floodwater. You may be swept off your feet or into a concealed opening even when the water looks shallow.
The NWS advises abandoning a vehicle stalled by water in favor of higher ground when possible. If the current is too strong to exit safely, remain in the vehicle, call for help and follow dispatcher directions rather than stepping into the flow.
What to do after a vehicle is exposed to floodwater
Do not restart a flood-exposed vehicle simply to see whether it still runs. Water may have entered the engine, transmission, electrical connectors, air intake, fuel system, brakes or safety systems. Starting it can turn a repairable problem into severe mechanical or electrical damage.
- Move away from danger first. Have the vehicle towed from the flooded area if authorities say it is safe to do so. Do not work beneath a vehicle in unstable water or mud.
- Record the conditions. Note how high the water reached, whether it was saltwater or fresh water, whether the engine was running and how long the car was submerged. Photographs can help an insurer and technician.
- Arrange a qualified inspection. A technician should assess fluids, intake, cylinders, wiring, connectors, brakes, wheel bearings, restraint systems and corrosion risk before any restart.
- Follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Vehicle-specific procedures differ, especially for hybrids, plug-in hybrids and battery-electric vehicles.
- Keep the car out of service until cleared. A vehicle that starts and moves can still have compromised brakes, airbags, high-voltage components or delayed corrosion.
Hybrid and electric vehicles
NHTSA cautions that a hybrid or electric vehicle battery exposed to standing water can present high-voltage, short-circuit, shock and fire risks. Do not touch damaged high-voltage components, attempt a DIY battery inspection or park a suspect vehicle inside a garage or near structures until qualified responders or the manufacturer provide instructions. Tell the tow operator that the vehicle may have flood or high-voltage damage.
Common mistakes that increase damage
- Using a vehicle ahead as a depth gauge. Their vehicle may have different ground clearance, tires, speed or damage, and the road can deteriorate between crossings.
- Accelerating to “make a bow wave.” Speed can increase hydroplaning, splash water into the intake and reduce your ability to stop.
- Following closely through spray. You lose sight of lane markings and hazards while leaving yourself less stopping room.
- Driving around a closure. Barricades identify a hazard you cannot evaluate from the driver’s seat.
- Restarting after a stall. Repeated cranking can draw water into cylinders or worsen electrical damage.
- Relying on all-wheel drive or high clearance. These features may help traction in some conditions, but they do not prevent flotation, washouts, submerged debris or loss of control.
- Using hazard flashers while moving in normal traffic. Follow local law and use them only when appropriate; they can reduce the visibility of turn signals and do not make a flooded road safe.
