First define the required strength, exposure, workability, durability and code criteria. Then characterize the cement, calcined clay, limestone, aggregates and admixtures; select a compliant binder formulation; calculate water and aggregate quantities with the approved local method; batch trials; and adjust only from measured slump and hardened performance. A commonly discussed LC3 binder contains about 50% clinker, 30% calcined clay, 15% limestone and 5% gypsum, but that percentage split is not a universal concrete mix or a guarantee of code compliance.
What LC3 is—and why its mix design cannot be universal
Limestone calcined clay cement (LC3) is a blended-binder concept combining Portland clinker or cement, calcined clay, limestone and a sulfate source such as gypsum. The proportions inside the binder are separate from the proportions of the complete concrete, which also include water, coarse aggregate, fine aggregate, air and chemical admixtures.

The often-cited LC3 concept is approximately 50% clinker, 30% calcined clay, 15% limestone and 5% gypsum. It is a useful starting description of the technology, not a default specification for a building project. Clay mineralogy and calcination quality, limestone fineness, cement chemistry, sulfate balance, aggregate grading, admixture compatibility and the governing design code all change the required concrete proportions.

The LC3 Project describes the technology as having potential for up to 40% lower CO2 emissions than conventional Portland-cement systems, but that is a potential figure rather than a result guaranteed for every plant or mix. Evaluate the environmental claim separately from strength, durability and acceptance requirements: LC3 Project: LC3 – Limestone Calcined Clay Cement.

1. Write the project brief before calculating a kilogram
Mix design begins with the performance specification. Record the following items in the design brief:
- Characteristic compressive strength, target mean strength and the age at which acceptance is assessed.
- Exposure class, required service life and any limits on permeability, chloride ingress, carbonation, sulfate attack, freeze–thaw or other transport-related properties.
- Required slump or flow at discharge, maximum allowable slump loss and the time between batching and placement.
- Placement method: conventional vibration, pumped concrete, tremie placement, self-compacting placement or another method with its own rheology limits.
- Maximum aggregate size, aggregate type, air-content requirement and finishing constraints.
- Curing method, curing duration and temperature limits, especially for elements with high surface-to-volume ratios.
- Applicable national cement specification, concrete proportioning standard, durability provisions, sampling rules and test methods.
- Any embodied-carbon, clinker-reduction, local-material or cost objective, treated as an additional constraint rather than a substitute for engineering acceptance.
The available sources do not establish one worldwide set of target values. The targets must come from the contract documents, the engineer of record and the jurisdiction in which the concrete will be produced and placed.
2. Characterize every ingredient
Calcined clay
Calcined clay is usually the most variable LC3 ingredient. Obtain current laboratory data for mineralogy, reactive clay content, calcination condition, fineness, particle-size distribution, loss on ignition and moisture. Kaolinite-rich clay can be highly reactive after suitable calcination, while quartz and other inert fractions dilute the reactive portion and alter water demand.
As a study-specific illustration, the clay used by Nguyen, Khan and Castel contained approximately 50.9% amorphous phase and 49.1% quartz. Those figures describe that material only; they are not minimum or universal LC3 clay specifications. The authors also discuss how clay quality and sulfate availability affected performance: Nguyen, Khan and Castel, “Engineering Properties of Limestone Calcined Clay Concrete,” Journal of Advanced Concrete Technology 16 (2018).
Limestone and Portland cement or clinker
Verify limestone carbonate content, fineness, moisture and any impurities. Record the cement or clinker type, strength class, fineness, alkali content and sulfate chemistry from current certificates or laboratory tests. The limestone and calcined-clay particles can change packing, rheology and early reactions, so the performance of one supplier’s combination cannot be assumed for another.
Gypsum and sulfate balance
Document the sulfate source and its dosage in the binder. Calcined-clay systems can be sensitive to sulfate availability; changing cement source, gypsum content or clay reactivity can change setting and strength development. A replacement percentage without a sulfate-balance check is not a complete LC3 design.

Aggregates
Measure grading, specific gravity, absorption, surface moisture, particle shape, density and deleterious constituents for each aggregate stockpile. LC3 mixes can be especially sensitive to aggregate moisture corrections because a small unaccounted water change alters the effective water-to-binder ratio and slump. Use the actual grading and moisture condition that will be present in production trials, not only nominal quarry data.
Admixtures
Check the chemical admixture type, solids content, compatibility with the binder and effect on setting, slump retention and air. Use the same product and concentration intended for the plant trials. A dosage stated in a paper is evidence for that paper’s materials and test conditions, not a transferable prescription.
3. Select the binder formulation and total binder content
Choose the clinker, calcined clay, limestone and gypsum proportions together with the total binder content. The decision should satisfy the local cement standard, the project’s durability provisions, the available qualified materials and the required fresh and hardened performance.
Do not confuse “30% calcined clay in the binder” with “30% replacement of cement in the concrete.” The first describes the binder’s internal composition. The second describes a concrete mixture relative to a control and may use a different denominator. Write the basis of every percentage directly on the mix sheet.
Published concrete examples show why a universal ratio is unsafe:
| Published example | Total binder | Water-to-binder ratio | Reported binder or replacement details |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nguyen, Khan and Castel (2018), LC3-30 example | 388 kg/m3 | 0.45 | 271.6 kg/m3 GP cement, 77.6 kg/m3 calcined clay and 38.8 kg/m3 limestone; the series used a 2:1 calcined-clay-to-limestone replacement blend |
| Materials (2023) experimental LC3 concrete | 340 kg/m3 | 0.40 | Experimental mix using the paper’s own clay and aggregate materials |
These are documented experimental mixtures, not default starting recipes. The 2023 example is described in “Influence of Low- to Medium-Kaolinite Clay on the Durability of Limestone Calcined Clay Cement (LC3) Concrete,” Materials (2023). A different project may need a different binder content or water-to-binder ratio to meet its strength, durability and workability limits.

4. Calculate water and aggregate quantities with the approved method
Use the concrete-proportioning method recognized by the project jurisdiction. Establish a trial water-to-binder ratio from the specified strength and durability limits, then verify it experimentally. Do not select water solely from a desired slump: the effective water-to-binder ratio is a primary strength and durability variable.
- Set the total binder content and initial water-to-binder ratio permitted by the design method and project specification.
- Calculate the absolute volume occupied by binder, water, entrained or entrapped air and aggregates.
- Divide the remaining volume between fine and coarse aggregate according to the approved grading and packing procedure.
- Convert aggregate volumes to batch masses using measured specific gravities.
- Correct batch water for aggregate absorption and free surface moisture. Record both the design water and the actual water added at the mixer.
- Calculate admixture quantity from the supplier’s dosage basis and verify it by trial, rather than treating a percentage from another mix as fixed.
For the 2018 LC3-30 example, 174.5 kg/m3 of water divided by 388 kg/m3 of total binder gives a water-to-binder ratio of approximately 0.45. That arithmetic is useful for checking a published table; it does not establish the right ratio for a new project.
5. Batch representative trial mixes
Trial batching is where the calculated proportions become a usable mix. Make batches large enough to reproduce plant mixing and to cast all required specimens.

- Measure slump or the project’s specified flow property promptly after mixing and again after the required retention interval.
- Cast specimens for the specified compressive-strength ages and for any required tensile, modulus, shrinkage or transport tests.
- Repeat the batch when a result is unexpected; do not “repair” an unexplained result by changing several variables at once.
- Identify each batch by material source, binder formulation, water-to-binder ratio, admixture dosage and curing condition.
Nguyen, Khan and Castel assessed workability with a slump procedure aligned to AS1012.3.1 and described as similar to ASTM C143. Use the test method and tolerances required in your jurisdiction, even when a paper used a different standard.
6. Adjust workability from measured results
When slump is too low, first check aggregate moisture corrections, scale accuracy, admixture delivery and mixing sequence. If those controls are correct, evaluate a compatible water-reducing admixture or revise the aggregate and paste proportions through another trial. Adding unplanned water at the truck changes the water-to-binder ratio and can invalidate strength and durability assumptions.
The 2018 experimental series illustrates the scale of LC3-related slump changes. The control concretes had reported slumps of 140 and 180 mm. Before superplasticizer adjustment, LC3-15, LC3-30 and LC3-45 had slumps of 70, 50 and 25 mm respectively. A reported superplasticizer range of 0.38–1.23% increased LC3 slump to approximately 130–180 mm in that experiment. Those values belong to the paper’s materials, mixer and test conditions; they are not recommended dosages for another plant.

7. Validate strength, durability and dimensional stability
Acceptance should cover more than 28-day compressive strength. Test at the age specified for the project and include the durability indicators relevant to the exposure:

The 2018 work measured fresh properties, compressive strength at multiple ages, tensile strength, elastic modulus, shrinkage and other physical indicators. It also showed that replacement level and the particular clay and sulfate conditions mattered. One strength result cannot establish a durability class or a service life.
8. Apply the correct standards and jurisdictional route
LC3 acceptance is governed by the standards adopted where the concrete is designed and supplied. The RILEM TC-282 CCL review explains that several national standardization routes exist and that European and UK approaches differed at the time of its 2023 publication. Confirm the current edition of the local cement specification, concrete design standard, durability rules and test methods before approving a mix: RILEM TC-282 CCL, “Standardisation of low clinker cements containing calcined clay and limestone: a review” (2023).
A published 2023 design example follows India’s IS 10262:2019 procedure. It is an example of an Indian design route, not evidence that IS 10262:2019 applies in another country: “Limestone calcined clay cement (LC3): A sustainable solution for mitigating environmental impact in the construction sector,” Case Studies in Construction Materials (2023).
Have the responsible engineer or approving authority confirm whether the selected LC3 binder is recognized as a cement, a blended cement, a cementitious constituent or a performance-based combination under the applicable rules. The classification affects permissible materials, documentation and acceptance testing.

10. A practical troubleshooting sequence
Strength is below target
Check actual water added, aggregate moisture calculations, binder masses, curing temperature and specimen handling before changing the formulation. Then review clay reactivity, sulfate balance, cement strength development and the selected test age. Reducing water may improve strength but can create an unworkable mix; use admixture and aggregate adjustments rather than an uncontrolled water reduction.
Slump varies from batch to batch
Compare stockpile moisture, aggregate grading, concrete temperature, admixture concentration and mixer timing. LC3’s fine, reactive particles can magnify small changes in water availability. Tighten moisture testing and calibrate scales and admixture dispensers before redesigning the mix.
Early-age performance is acceptable but later durability is uncertain
Do not infer service life from compressive strength alone. Extend curing and transport testing to the ages and exposure indicators required by the specification. Confirm that the selected clay and limestone combination has evidence appropriate to the project’s environment.
11. Keep environmental claims in their proper place
LC3 can reduce clinker demand and may reduce embodied carbon, but the actual result depends on clinker factor, clay processing, limestone and gypsum sourcing, electricity and fuel, transport, plant efficiency and the comparison baseline. Use the LC3 Project’s “up to 40%” figure only as a qualified potential, and calculate the project’s own environmental declaration or life-cycle result when a contractual carbon claim is required. A lower-carbon binder still has to meet the same structural, durability and construction requirements.
