How can cities be designed for healthier microbiomes? Start by treating vegetation, soil, air and buildings as one connected urban ecology. Protect and connect biodiverse green spaces, reduce unnecessary soil sealing, add varied planting and living infrastructure, and design buildings that manage—not blindly maximize—microbial exposures. These choices can restore contact with environmental biodiversity while also delivering established benefits such as shade, recreation and storm-water management.
The important qualification is scientific: microbiome composition is not yet a clinical design target with a proven recipe. A 2024 review describes biodiversity-oriented urban design as promising, while the World Health Organization (WHO) finds the strongest evidence for broader green-space outcomes. Soil and indoor-microbiome pathways remain plausible, active research questions rather than guaranteed ways to prevent allergies, improve immunity or treat disease.

What an urban microbiome includes—and why design affects it
An urban environmental microbiome is the collection of microbial communities associated with city vegetation, soils, air and buildings. People encounter these communities through outdoor activity, particles and aerosols, contact with soil and plants, and air moving through occupied spaces. The relevant question is therefore not whether a city can install one “healthy” microbe, but whether its design supports functioning ecosystems and safe, varied exposure.
The 2024 narrative review Health by design; optimising our urban environmental microbiomes for human health presents intentional planning as an opportunity to restore microbial diversity that may be reduced in highly built environments. It does not establish a city-scale intervention that produces a quantified clinical benefit. Microbial diversity is also not automatically healthier: pathogens, allergens, pollutants and antimicrobial resistance require control, and the appropriate community depends on place, season, building use and maintenance.

For construction and planning teams, this means adding an ecological layer to familiar decisions about land, water, materials, ventilation and operations. Public-health protections, accessibility, air quality, safe soil management and building performance remain the non-negotiable baseline.
What is established about green space, and what is still a hypothesis
Green-space interventions have a broader evidence base than microbiome-specific interventions. WHO Europe’s 2017 review reports positive outcomes from several types of urban green-space intervention, while also describing the evidence on health and equity effectiveness as partial and calling for stronger monitoring. Benefits can include opportunities for physical activity and social connection, cooling, noise and storm-water management, and contact with nature.
The possible microbiome contribution is a separate, less certain pathway. Diverse vegetation and functioning soils provide habitat for environmental microbes and can influence the particles and organisms present in outdoor air (sometimes called the aerobiome). No cited source demonstrates that a particular park, green roof or indoor plant prevents allergy or improves immunity. Present microbiome effects as a reason to design for ecological quality, not as a medical promise.

The 2024 review reports a WHO recommendation that residents should have at least one public green space of at least 0.5 hectares within 300 metres of home. This is an access and planning recommendation, not a microbiome-specific clinical threshold. The review argues that larger spaces may be more likely to support functioning ecosystems and diverse aerobiomes, but size alone does not guarantee ecological quality or equitable use.

City-scale levers for a more biodiverse, usable landscape
Preserve and connect functioning habitat
Protect existing mature vegetation, wetlands, remnant soils and connected corridors before compensating with new planting. Link parks, street trees, waterways, courtyards and other green areas where land and safety conditions allow. Connectivity can support plant and soil communities more effectively than isolated decorative plots, while also improving shade and habitat continuity.
“Rewilding” can be appropriate in selected areas, but it is not a universal prescription. Define the intended ecological function, visibility, access, fire risk, allergen considerations and maintenance regime. A less intensively mown area may support more habitat, yet still needs clear paths, sightlines and management where residents require them.
Reduce soil sealing and retain living soil
The 2023 review Harnessing soil biodiversity to promote human health in cities identifies urban soil biodiversity as promising but understudied. It discusses plausible mechanisms including suppression of pathogens, remediation of contaminants, effects on human-associated microbiota and immune fitness. These are proposed mechanisms, not demonstrated outcomes from a specific municipal project.

- Remove or avoid unnecessary paving and use permeable, planted surfaces.
- Retain leaf litter, woody debris and undisturbed soil in designated habitat zones rather than stripping every surface.
- Use green roofs, green walls, urban farms, community gardens and compact parks with greater plant diversity and structural complexity.
- Test soil for contaminants and manage compost, irrigation, dust and animal waste so biodiversity goals do not create exposure hazards.
- Specify native or locally appropriate species with attention to water demand, invasive-potential controls, pollen, toxicity and long-term maintenance.
These measures should be adapted to local climate, geology, contamination history and municipal practice. The review supports the direction of travel, not one globally validated planting or soil formula.
Design for use and participation, not scenery alone
WHO Europe reports that physical upgrades paired with social engagement can help interventions reach different groups. Involve residents, disability advocates, schools, growers, maintenance staff and public-health practitioners before finalizing layouts. Participation can reveal barriers that a biodiversity map misses—such as inaccessible paths, fear of poorly lit areas, cultural preferences or gardening rules that exclude renters.
Track who receives the investment and who uses it. A new amenity in an already well-served district is not an equitable microbiome strategy if neighborhoods with little green space remain exposed to heat, traffic and sealed ground.

Location, envelope, window operation, occupancy, ventilation, filtration, materials, cleaning, moisture control and indoor plants can all influence microbial exposures. The 2024 review specifically identifies operable windows and indoor plants as design considerations. Their effects depend on climate, outdoor pollution, building use and maintenance; adding plants or opening windows is not automatically beneficial.
Balance exposure with control requirements
The National Academies discusses ventilation, filtration and disinfection as ways to control microbial exposures, while also considering whether beneficial exposures could be encouraged. These interventions involve trade-offs in energy use, construction cost, operating cost, infection control and comfort. A school, hospital, housing block and office cannot share one exposure strategy.
Start with a building-specific risk assessment:
- Define the health and performance objective. Set requirements for outdoor-air rates, humidity, temperature, filtration, pollutant control, infection prevention and energy before considering microbiome goals.
- Characterize the site. Review outdoor particulate pollution, traffic, industrial sources, pollen, moisture, flood risk and nearby vegetation.
- Choose controllable interfaces. Decide where operable windows, filtered mechanical ventilation, entry vestibules, planted areas and cleaning protocols are appropriate for the occupancy.
- Protect against moisture and contamination. Commission drainage, envelope seals, HVAC condensate management and leak response; ecological intent never justifies persistent dampness or contaminated dust.
- Commission and monitor. Verify airflow, filtration, pressure relationships, maintenance and occupant complaints after handover, then adjust operations rather than assuming the design performs as drawn.
The National Academies states that “the characteristics of ‘healthy’ indoor environments cannot yet be defined” and that researchers do not yet understand how to modify ventilation systems or building-material chemistry with predictable effects on microbial communities. That uncertainty is a reason for measured, reversible decisions—not for ignoring indoor environmental quality.
How to compare two urban proposals
When a city must choose between, for example, a highly paved plaza with ornamental planting and a smaller but connected habitat-and-access project, score both against the same criteria. The following framework keeps microbiome claims in proportion to established obligations.

A practical implementation sequence
- Baseline the district. Map green-space access, walking routes, canopy, sealed soil, vacant land, contamination, heat, air quality, housing conditions and building types. Record population groups likely to face access barriers.
- Set a dual outcome brief. Specify conventional outcomes—shade, drainage, recreation, biodiversity, air quality and energy—as well as the ecological functions the project should support. Label microbiome-mediated health as a hypothesis to evaluate, not a guaranteed outcome.
- Prioritize connected interventions. Combine larger public spaces where feasible with street trees, planted corridors, community gardens, green roofs, green walls and compact parks. Select soil treatments and species for local safety and maintenance capacity.
- Co-design with users and operators. Test routes, visibility, seating, planting preferences, gardening rules, cleaning plans and seasonal use with residents and the teams who will maintain the assets.
- Integrate building interfaces. Coordinate window operation, ventilation and filtration with outdoor conditions. Keep moisture control, pollutant protection and occupancy requirements ahead of unverified exposure goals.
- Commission and document. Verify soil safety, irrigation, drainage, plant establishment, ventilation, filtration and cleaning. Publish responsibilities, trigger levels and response procedures.
- Evaluate distribution and outcomes. Monitor access and use by neighborhood and demographic group, vegetation and soil condition, indoor environmental performance, maintenance incidents and relevant health indicators where ethical and feasible. Revise management when results or resident feedback show harm or exclusion.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Calling biodiversity a medical treatment
A more diverse environmental microbiome is not automatically healthier, and the cited reviews do not show that a named intervention prevents disease. Describe ecological function and established public-health benefits accurately; identify microbiome pathways as hypotheses.
Equating a green roof with a complete microbiome strategy
A roof can add habitat, insulation and storm-water capacity, but it may be inaccessible to residents, isolated from ground soil, costly to irrigate and difficult to maintain. Compare it with street-level access and connected habitat rather than counting installations.
Opening windows without checking outdoor conditions
Operable windows can connect indoor and outdoor environments, but traffic pollution, wildfire smoke, pollen, noise, security and humidity may make opening them inappropriate at times. Use controls and operating rules suited to the building and site.
Ignoring soil and maintenance safety
Unsealed or cultivated soil must be assessed for contaminants, dust, standing water, animal waste and tool hygiene. Biodiversity objectives do not replace testing, remediation, safe access or a funded maintenance plan.
Measuring only what is easy
Microbial sequencing alone cannot establish a health benefit. Pair ecological measurements with access, use, indoor performance, resident experience, equity and conventional health indicators, and state clearly when an outcome has not been validated.
What the evidence means for a construction brief
Specify biodiversity-supporting landscapes and connected green infrastructure where they fit local ecology, while preserving safe soil, water, air and access standards. Require building teams to document ventilation, filtration, moisture and maintenance decisions, and to explain their trade-offs. Set monitoring and community-engagement obligations in the contract rather than treating them as optional post-occupancy extras.
This approach captures the opportunity identified by the 2024 urban-microbiome review without overstating it. Green space and soil can be designed as functioning habitat and public infrastructure; buildings can be operated as carefully managed interfaces. The responsible outcome is a healthier, more equitable urban environment with better ecological exposure—not a promise that a particular microbial profile will deliver a clinical result.
