How to Design an Indoor Football Facility for Year-Round Training

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Design an indoor football facility around the training format, not around a convenient leftover building. Set the operating brief first, then reserve enough clear playing area and height, specify a tested surface as an installed system, coordinate protected lighting with the activity, and connect changing, medical, storage and maintenance routes to the pitch. FIFA guidance gives a useful starting range: an indoor seven-a-side example is 70 m × 50 m, while 44 m × 34 m is described as an absolute minimum recommended area and 10 m as the minimum recommended ceiling height for its indoor-hall guidance. Those are planning recommendations, not a universal building code or a complete building footprint.

A small-sided community hall, a multi-team academy fieldhouse and an elite full-size training venue have different spatial, surface and operating requirements. The sections below turn those differences into an initial design brief that a club, school, municipality or developer can take to an architect, sports-surface specialist, lighting designer, structural engineer and approving authority.

1. Define the operating brief before drawing the building

The first design decision is how the facility will be used each week. A pitch sized for occasional five-a-side hire may be unsuitable for full-team tactical work, goalkeeper training or simultaneous academy sessions. Write the intended use in measurable terms before selecting a site or commissioning concept drawings.

Identify the users and training formats

  • List the clubs, school groups, age bands and ability levels that will train there.
  • Decide whether the core format is small-sided play, seven-a-side, full-size 11-a-side training, or a mix.
  • State whether the venue will host only training or also matches, camps, tournaments, public hire, other sports and non-sport events.
  • Record whether spectators, parents, media, food service or paid admission are part of the operation.
  • Set the intended opening hours, peak periods, seasonal demand and cleaning or maintenance windows.

These choices drive pitch geometry, run-off and circulation, goal types, storage, changing capacity, reception, toilets, viewing areas, staffing and the replacement plan for heavily used components. FIFA’s training-site guidance frames facilities around the needs of their intended users; it does not supply a universal business plan, construction cost or utilization guarantee.

Separate the playable area from the building footprint

A quoted pitch dimension is not the same as the outside dimensions of the fieldhouse. The building also needs safe margins, access doors, team and officials’ areas, equipment storage, maintenance routes, emergency egress and any support or spectator functions. Have the design team draw both the marked playing rectangle and the total internal clear zone, then test how equipment and people move around it.

2. Choose the right playing format and clear height

Use the largest activity that must be accommodated as the controlling case. A small-sided hall can be efficient for high-throughput sessions, but it cannot provide the same spatial training as a full-size field. Conversely, building a full-size envelope for a program that only needs small-sided games may increase construction, heating, lighting and maintenance demands without improving the schedule.

Planning case Published dimension or guidance How to use it
FIFA seven-a-side indoor example 70 m × 50 m Use as a starting point for a substantial seven-a-side training hall; confirm run-off, circulation and support spaces separately.
FIFA indoor-hall absolute minimum recommendation 44 m × 34 m FIFA describes this as an absolute minimum recommended area in its indoor-hall guidance, not a universal code minimum or a complete building footprint.
FIFA ceiling recommendation 10 m minimum Use for football training planning where the FIFA guidance applies; verify structural, fire, lighting and local code requirements.
Full-size 11-a-side training Full-size pitch at elite level; exact dimensions are not stated on the cited guidance page Have the football authority, operator and design team establish the required markings, run-off and clear-span envelope for the intended level of play.
Small-sided guidance from The FA (August 2010) 3.66 m × 1.83 m recommended small-sided goals; at least 6.1 m hall height Treat as dated, scope-specific UK guidance for small-sided halls. It does not replace FIFA’s 10 m recommendation or current local requirements.

The 44 m × 34 m figure should not be used as a shortcut for a building purchase. It may be insufficient once you add safe clearance, circulation, team spaces, storage and maintenance access. Draw the actual activities at full scale, including the largest goals, mobile equipment and recovery route for an injured player.

Resolve low-ceiling sites early

A low roof affects ball flight, goal selection, netting, light protection and the range of drills that can be run safely. The FA’s 2010 guide discusses alternate goal sizes where ceiling height is low and gives 6.1 m as a minimum for indoor football or sports halls within its stated scope. That historical figure should be checked against current standards and the proposed program. If the roof cannot meet the clear-height brief, redesign the activity honestly rather than labeling a restricted hall as a full training facility.

3. Plan the building envelope, routes and structure

Once the playable rectangle and height are set, the architect and structural engineer can test the site. The objective is a clear, protected training volume with routes that remain usable during sessions, cleaning and emergencies.

Keep football movement and building movement separate

  • Provide a controlled threshold from reception and changing areas to the playing surface so outdoor dirt and water are not carried onto the turf.
  • Give maintenance equipment a route wide and tall enough for grooming machines, replacement materials and waste removal without crossing active sessions.
  • Provide a direct route for medical staff and for moving an injured player, with doors and turning spaces checked at concept stage.
  • Keep goals and other mobile equipment out of pitch run-offs when not in use.
  • Coordinate emergency exits, fire compartments, accessibility routes and occupant loads with the authority having jurisdiction.

FIFA’s around-pitch guidance calls for a safe, convenient route and considers maintenance equipment, medical personnel and injured-player transfer. Exact widths, fire ratings and accessibility provisions depend on the country, building type and occupancy and must be established by the project’s qualified professionals.

Check structure and overhead services together

Ask the structural team to confirm the clear-span strategy, roof deflection limits, service zones, suspended lighting loads and impact protection. Any column, low beam, duct or hanging fixture inside the ball envelope changes the usable training area. Protect ceilings and lights with netting as recommended in FIFA’s indoor-hall guidance, while ensuring the net system itself does not create entanglement, visibility or maintenance problems.

  • One-Handed Loading - Keep one hand free with a 1/4 in. hex chuck that accepts 1 in. bit tips

4. Specify turf as an installed performance system

Indoor football turf is not selected by pile height or color alone. The specification should cover the playing characteristics, backing, infill or infill-free construction, shockpad, drainage or cleaning strategy, seam details, fire behavior, maintenance equipment and expected use intensity.

Use the appropriate FIFA quality level

FIFA distinguishes between FIFA QUALITY, intended for community and amateur pitches, and FIFA QUALITY PRO, intended for the highest professional-level playing performance. The mark applies through a quality programme rather than to a generic product category. FIFA states: “Only artificial playing surfaces which have been tested in the laboratory and on the field according to the stringent testing criteria of the FIFA Quality Programme can be called football turf.”

The programme describes testing of player and ball interaction, product composition, weather resistance, seam strength and service life. It also requires the final installation to pass the relevant testing; a product brochure or a roll of approved carpet does not by itself certify the completed pitch. Put the required quality level, testing responsibility, tolerances, documentation and remedy for failure into the procurement documents.

See the FIFA Quality Programme for Football Turf for the current programme description and requirements.

Compare football turf with a multipurpose sports floor

Question Football-specific artificial turf Multipurpose indoor sports floor
Best fit Football training and play where ball roll, traction and football-specific player interaction are priorities. A schedule dominated by activities requiring a hard or resilient sports floor, subject to the relevant sport standards.
Key design checks Installed quality testing, infill behavior, fibre wear, shockpad, seams, cleaning and grooming access. Impact response, traction, rolling loads, line-marking compatibility and the requirements of every sport sharing the space.
Main risk Assuming a football product automatically suits other sports or ignoring indoor fire and maintenance issues. Assuming a general sports floor will provide football-turf behavior or tolerate football footwear and equipment.

If several sports share the hall, write a hierarchy of use. The FA’s indoor-area guide discusses different floor characteristics for different activities; do not approve a surface simply because it is marketed as multipurpose.

Address indoor infill, wear and fire considerations

The FA guide, published in August 2010, highlights infill stability, fibre wear and resilience, shockpads and potential flammability concerns with rubber-filled surfaces. It says indoor long-pile turf needs regular brushing and grooming, with periodic infill de-compaction. Treat those points as scoped, dated guidance and obtain current specialist advice, fire classification and local building-code confirmation for the actual product assembly. Require the installer to describe how dust, displaced infill, spills and damaged seams will be managed in an enclosed environment.

5. Design lighting, ball protection and visual quality as one system

Lighting should be selected for the activity, not just for a target wattage. FIFA identifies light intensity, colour temperature and uniformity as quality factors in its floodlight programme. A training hall, club competition venue, elite environment and broadcast venue may need different performance and verification criteria, especially if another sport will share the space.

Specify the use class and verify the installation

Ask a qualified lighting designer to establish maintained illuminance, uniformity, glare control, colour characteristics, emergency lighting and controls for the actual use. If a FIFA floodlight quality category is sought, the completed installation must satisfy the programme criteria and undergo on-site testing; an approved luminaire alone does not make the installation certified.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The FA’s August 2010 indoor guide lists maintained average illuminance of 750 lux, 500 lux and 300 lux for its Class 1, Class 2 and Class 3 categories, respectively, with a minimum-to-average uniformity of 0.7 in each category. Those figures belong to that dated guide and should not be issued as a current project specification without confirmation of the applicable standard and use class.

Consult the FIFA Quality Programme for Floodlights and have the designer confirm current requirements.

Protect fixtures from footballs

FIFA’s indoor-hall guidance recommends netting to protect ceilings and lighting from stray balls. Coordinate net height, mesh, support points, access for lamp or driver replacement, cleaning and fire strategy. Avoid placing fragile sensors, speakers or signs in the ball-impact zone unless they are specifically protected and maintainable.

6. Fit changing, medical, gym and briefing spaces to the schedule

Support spaces determine whether a facility can turn sessions around safely and on time. Size them from the peak simultaneous occupancy rather than the average daily headcount.

Player and coach spaces

  • Provide changing rooms, toilets, showers and accessible facilities for the peak number of teams using the pitch at once.
  • Include coach, referee, first-aid and briefing functions where the operating model requires them.
  • Use ventilation and temperature control appropriate to the climate and occupancy; FIFA specifically calls for climate-appropriate player-space conditions.
  • Specify non-slip flooring in wet and transition areas and detail how water is kept off the playing surface.
  • Provide warm-up, recovery or analysis space only if the program can operate and staff it; each additional room needs access, cleaning and storage.

Gym and heavy equipment loads

If a gym is above ground level, have the structural engineer check floor load capacity for the planned equipment, not merely the code minimum for a lightly occupied room. FIFA notes that gym equipment can be heavy and calls for careful review when the gym cannot be on the ground floor. Confirm delivery routes, vibration, acoustic separation and replacement access before ordering equipment.

7. Design equipment storage and maintenance into the first plan

Goals, nets, rebounders, mannequins, balls, benches, grooming machines and replacement turf materials need dedicated, secure storage. The FA guide says goals should be safe to use and stored away from pitch run-offs. Draw storage doors and turning circles at the same time as the pitch; otherwise equipment ends up in circulation routes or on the playing surface.

Build a turf maintenance plan into the specification

  1. Obtain the turf manufacturer’s maintenance schedule for the proposed assembly, including brushing frequency, infill redistribution, de-compaction, seam inspection and cleaning.
  2. Confirm who will perform routine grooming, what machine access is required and where equipment will be charged, cleaned and stored.
  3. Set inspection points for fibre wear, exposed backing, compacted infill, uneven areas, loose seams and damaged shockpads.
  4. Record the products and methods allowed for spills, disinfecting and snow, mud or water contamination where relevant.
  5. Define how repairs will be isolated, how replacement materials will match the installed system and how the pitch will be re-tested after major work.

FIFA’s turf programme includes quality-assurance and maintenance guidance. Use it alongside the installer’s project-specific manual, rather than treating a consumer brush or retail goal as a substitute for a facility-scale maintenance system.

8. Model capacity without overpromising utilization

Convert the operating brief into a weekly schedule before finalizing the number of pitches or partitions. Include setup, changeover, cleaning, inspections, staff breaks and closures for repairs. A hall that is technically available for many hours may not be operationally available if every session requires long equipment moves or if maintenance is deferred.

FIFA’s turf-programme page gives an illustrative example of a typical amateur club using 58 pitch-hours per week, with a team-by-team breakdown. It is an example schedule, not a utilization benchmark or a prediction for a new facility. Use your own booking data, local demand, staffing plan and maintenance capacity to establish the business case.

9. Commission the project in practical stages

  1. Brief and feasibility: document users, formats, operating hours, site constraints, planning designation, access, utilities, flood risk, neighboring uses and required support spaces.
  2. Concept layout: test the playing rectangle, clear height, run-offs, structural grid, routes, storage, changing and emergency movement at full scale.
  3. Performance specifications: write the turf assembly, quality level, lighting criteria, netting, acoustic and environmental requirements, equipment loads and maintenance access before tender.
  4. Approvals and compliance: obtain current advice on planning, building, fire, accessibility, electrical, ventilation, occupational safety and sports-surface requirements for the project’s jurisdiction.
  5. Procurement: require named installers, references for comparable installations, submittals, samples, warranties, testing responsibilities and a clear response if the installed result fails.
  6. Construction quality control: inspect sub-base, drainage or cleaning provisions, seams, shockpad, infill distribution, lighting aim, netting and route clearances before handover.
  7. Handover and operations: receive as-built drawings, test reports, maintenance manuals, spare materials, staff training and a calendar for inspections and re-testing.

Neither FIFA’s facility guidance nor The FA’s dated indoor guide provides a construction cost, permit list or code-compliance conclusion. Those must come from the project team and the relevant local authorities.

10. Common design failures and corrective actions

The pitch fits, but the building does not

Symptom: marked dimensions fit on paper, but goals, benches, doors or maintenance machines obstruct run-offs.

Correction: redraw the complete clear zone with every fixed and mobile object, then test delivery, emergency and injured-player routes before freezing the footprint.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A product is specified, but the installed surface is not verified

Symptom: procurement relies on a brochure or a product name while seams, infill, shockpad or sub-base vary on site.

11. Three useful starting briefs

Facility type Primary design emphasis Questions to resolve
Community small-sided hall High booking turnover, robust storage, safe low-height operation and easy cleaning. Which small-sided format is required? Can the roof meet the activity’s ball-flight needs? Which dated guidance must be replaced by current local standards?
Academy or club fieldhouse Multiple age groups, repeat weekly sessions, team support, analysis and maintenance access. Can the layout handle simultaneous teams, changing demand, medical access and a documented turf-care schedule?
Elite full-size training venue Full-size training envelope, high-quality installed surface, controlled lighting, specialist support and resilient operations. What full-size dimensions and performance criteria apply to the intended level? What testing, environmental control, recovery and staff facilities are required?

12. Design-review checklist

  • Operating users, formats, peak occupancy and weekly schedule are written down.
  • Playable dimensions, clear height, run-offs and total building footprint are shown separately.
  • The 70 m × 50 m seven-a-side example, 44 m × 34 m FIFA minimum recommendation and 10 m ceiling guidance have been treated as scoped recommendations, not universal codes.
  • Any use of the FA’s 2010 small-sided guidance, 3.66 m × 1.83 m goals, 6.1 m height or 750/500/300 lux values is labeled by date and confirmed against current requirements.
  • Turf quality level, installed testing, infill or shockpad, fire considerations, maintenance access and repair obligations are in the specification.
  • Lighting quality, glare, color temperature, uniformity, controls and ball protection are designed together.
  • Changing, toilets, ventilation, temperature control, non-slip transitions, gym loads and briefing or medical spaces match peak use.
  • Maintenance, medical and emergency routes work without crossing unsafe obstacles.
  • Goals and equipment have secure storage away from run-offs, with suitable delivery and retrieval paths.
  • Approvals, accessibility, fire safety, structural design and local code checks are assigned to qualified professionals.
  • Handover includes test results, as-built information, maintenance training, spare materials and a post-installation inspection plan.

A successful indoor football facility is therefore a coordinated operating system, not just a roof over an artificial pitch. Start with the people and training formats, reserve the correct clear volume, verify the surface and lighting after installation, and make every support and maintenance route work before the first booking is sold.
