Start by identifying the tile body, not just its label. “Mexican tile” can mean handmade Saltillo terracotta, glazed ceramic, porcelain, or another clay product. For Saltillo, the dependable approach is to measure every piece, mark the cut, and use a stable wet tile saw with a continuous-rim diamond blade rated for that material. For other tiles, choose the tool according to the tile’s composition, thickness, cut shape, quantity, and required edge.

This distinction matters because handmade tiles can vary in size, thickness, color, and edge profile. A technique that works on a dense, uniform ceramic tile may chip, bind, or break a soft, irregular terracotta tile. Inspect the actual pieces before committing to a cutting method.

What “Mexican tile” means for a cutting plan

The name describes origin or style, not one standardized material. Before setting up a saw, determine which of these situations applies:

  • Saltillo terracotta: usually handmade, with natural variation and an irregular surface or edge. This is the tile-specific case for which a continuous diamond blade on a wet saw is the strongest recommendation.
  • Glazed ceramic: often more uniform and suitable for a manual score-and-snap cutter when the cut is straight and the tile is compatible with the cutter.
  • Porcelain: denser and harder than ordinary ceramic. It commonly calls for a wet saw and a blade specifically rated for porcelain; do not assume a manual cutter will perform well.
  • Other handmade or decorative products: composition, glaze, thickness, and embedded details can vary. Follow the tile maker’s instructions when available and test on a spare piece.

Look at the back of the tile, measure its thickness, and check whether the body is soft terracotta, dense porcelain, or another material. If the seller’s description only says “Mexican tile,” ask for the material and thickness before buying or renting equipment.

Choose the tool by cut, material, and quantity

No single cutter is best for every Mexican-style tile. Match the equipment to the geometry and the finish you need.

Tool Best use Advantages Limits and cautions
Manual score-and-snap cutter Simple straight cuts in suitable, reasonably uniform ceramic tile No electrical power or water; quick for a small number of compatible cuts Can struggle with narrow strips, thick or very hard tile, irregular handmade edges, and some textured glazes
Wet tile saw with continuous diamond blade Repeated straight cuts and a broad range of tile materials, including Saltillo when the blade is suitable Controlled cut line, water cooling, less airborne dust than dry cutting, and capacity for many cuts Needs a stable setup, functioning water delivery, correct blade, and careful feeding; cut edges may still need smoothing
Angle grinder with diamond blade L, U, curved, circular, or other shaped cuts; useful where a tile is already installed Can follow complex outlines and reach areas a saw cannot Dry grinding can generate substantial silica dust; requires secure workholding, progressive passes, and strict dust control

For Saltillo, Clay Imports’ guidance favors a high-quality wet saw and a blade selected for the material. Confirm the blade diameter, arbor, and material rating match the saw before installation. A continuous rim is generally preferred for a clean tile cut; the blade must still be the one recommended for the actual tile body.

How to cut Saltillo tile with a wet saw

Saltillo is the case where preparation and inspection are as important as the machine. Handmade pieces may not be identical, so treat every tile as an individual workpiece.

QEP 10630 24 in. Professional Tile Cutter Yellow
  • Multipurpose cutter for most large format tile including ceramic and porcelain
  • Side arm extensions to support large format tiles
  • Ball bearing slide for smooth scoring
  • Rip cuts porcelain and ceramic tile up to 24 in. and 16 in. diagonally
  • 7/8 in. titanium-coated tungsten-carbide cutting wheel for smooth and durable scoring

1. Sort and inspect the tiles

  1. Spread the tiles on a clean, stable surface where you can see their faces and edges.
  2. Set aside pieces with cracks, structural flaws, or damage. Do not plan an important cut through a tile that is already compromised.
  3. Measure several tiles, even when they came from the same box. Record thickness and note bowed faces, irregular corners, or unusually uneven edges.
  4. Plan to use the most visually consistent pieces in prominent areas and reserve less consistent pieces for hidden cuts where practical.

Do not assume a nominal tile size is the finished size. The handmade variation affects layout, grout joints, and the position of every cut.

2. Dry-lay the course and mark each piece

  1. Place tiles in the intended pattern without adhesive so you can see where joints, walls, cabinets, drains, or other obstacles fall.
  2. Measure the opening at the exact location of the tile. Walls and corners are rarely perfectly square, so take measurements at more than one point when the opening is irregular.
  3. Transfer the measurements to the tile’s face with a pencil or a marker that remains visible through the cutting process.
  4. Mark the waste side clearly. A simple arrow or cross can prevent cutting the wrong section after several tiles have been measured.
  5. Account for the planned grout joint and any movement or perimeter gap required by the installation system. Follow the project’s tile-setting specification rather than guessing a joint size.

For a tile with an irregular edge, reference the actual edge that will meet the wall or adjacent piece. A measurement taken from an assumed square corner can leave a visible wedge-shaped gap.

3. Set up the wet saw

  1. Put the saw on a stable, level surface with enough room to support the largest practical portion of the tile.
  2. Install a continuous diamond blade that is compatible with the saw and rated for the tile material. Inspect the blade and mounting hardware before use.
  3. Fill or connect the water system according to the saw manufacturer’s instructions.
  4. Run the saw briefly and verify that water is actually reaching the blade before placing the tile in the cut path.
  5. Arrange the guide and supports so the marked line stays aligned without forcing the tile against the blade.

Never proceed with a dry blade when the setup is intended for wet cutting. Water cools the cutting interface and substantially reduces airborne dust, but it does not eliminate every hazard.

4. Make the cut

  1. Place the tile face up unless the saw and blade instructions call for another orientation. Support the workpiece on both sides of the intended cut where the saw design permits.
  2. Keep fingers away from the blade and hold the tile firmly against the guide without twisting it.
  3. Start the blade before contacting the tile and let it reach operating speed.
  4. Feed the tile slowly and steadily. Forcing the piece can chip the edge, stall the motor, or deflect the cut.
  5. Maintain alignment through the entire pass. Do not pull the tile backward through a spinning blade unless the manufacturer specifically permits that motion.
  6. Near the end of the cut, keep both sections supported so the waste piece cannot lever against the blade and break the tile.
  7. Let the blade stop before repositioning a cut piece or clearing material from the table.

If the cut begins to wander, stop and inspect the setup rather than trying to correct the line by pushing harder. Check that the guide is secure, the blade is mounted correctly, and the tile is supported.

5. Check the fit before installation

  1. Rinse or wipe the tile so the cut line and edge are visible.
  2. Place the piece in its actual location with the planned joint and perimeter allowance.
  3. Look at the face, corners, and adjoining pieces from the normal viewing direction.
  4. Trim only after confirming the fit. Handmade tiles can make a small measurement error conspicuous, especially along a straight wall or border.

Using a manual score-and-snap cutter

A manual cutter can be efficient for simple straight cuts on suitable ceramic tile. It is not automatically the right choice for Saltillo or for dense porcelain.

When it is appropriate

  • The tile is uniform enough for the breaker to engage predictably.
  • The cut is straight and leaves enough material on both sides for the tool to grip.
  • The cutter’s stated capacity covers the tile’s thickness and size.
  • A slightly textured or irregular face will not prevent a continuous score.

Scoring and snapping procedure

  1. Clean the tile face and mark the cut line.
  2. Set the tile squarely against the cutter’s fence, with the marked line aligned to the scoring wheel.
  3. Apply even pressure and make one smooth score across the glaze. Repeatedly retracing the same line can produce a ragged break.
  4. Position the breaker over the score and apply controlled pressure until the tile separates.
  5. Inspect the edge. If it is sharp, soften it with a tile-rubbing stone or sanding sponge.

Narrow strips are a common failure point because the breaker may not have enough material to support the snap. Use a wet saw for strips that the manual cutter cannot hold securely. Stop if the score skips across a textured surface or the tile starts cracking away from the line.

Making shaped cuts with an angle grinder

An angle grinder fitted with a suitable diamond blade can create L-shaped, U-shaped, curved, and circular openings, and it can help when a tile is already installed. It is a specialist option, not a casual indoor shortcut.

Plan the shape

  1. Transfer the opening from the obstacle to the tile, adding the installation clearance required by the project.
  2. For a circular opening, use a template or compass that matches the actual fitting rather than estimating by eye.
  3. Break a complex shape into several relief cuts so the blade removes small sections instead of forcing one deep turn.

Cut in progressive passes

  1. Secure the tile on a stable, non-slip support. If the tile is installed, protect surrounding surfaces and confirm that hidden services will not be contacted.
  2. Make a shallow first pass along the marked lines.
  3. Deepen the cut through successive passes, removing small sections and preserving the line.
  4. For an interior opening, make relief cuts toward the waste area, then remove the remaining pieces without levering against the finished edge.
  5. Dress the edge with a rubbing stone or sanding sponge after the shape is complete.

Dry grinding produces dust at the point of contact and can spread it through a room. Use the grinder only with the dust controls, ventilation, protective equipment, and work practices required by the tool maker and applicable safety rules. Where a wet saw can accomplish the cut, wet cutting is normally the better dust-control choice.

Silica dust and personal safety

Tile cutting and grinding can release respirable crystalline silica. Daltile identifies dry cutting as having the highest probability of silica dust and does not recommend it; it favors wet cutting, ventilation, and a properly fitted particulate respirator when cutting or removing tile. OSHA lists cutting and grinding silica-containing materials among exposure-generating activities and emphasizes engineering controls and wet methods.

OSHA reports about 2.3 million workers exposed to silica at work. That figure is a general United States occupational estimate, not a prediction of an individual tile cutter’s exposure or a Mexican-tile injury rate. For covered construction employers in the United States, OSHA’s silica construction standard includes requirements for exposure controls, housekeeping, training, and related practices. Check the rules that apply to your location and project.

Minimum work-area controls

  • Prefer a wet saw for straight cuts whenever the tile and equipment are compatible.
  • Set up outdoors or in a well-ventilated area when practical, while preventing contaminated water and slurry from entering drains or finished spaces.
  • Keep bystanders away from the cutting zone.
  • Use eye protection and gloves; avoid loose clothing and jewelry.
  • Keep hands clear of the blade and secure the tile before cutting.
  • Use respiratory protection selected for the task and fitted according to applicable requirements. A generic disposable mask should not be treated as universally adequate.
  • Clean slurry and dust using methods that do not re-aerosolize silica. OSHA advises avoiding dry sweeping or brushing where feasible alternatives such as wet sweeping or HEPA-filtered vacuuming exist.

Wet cutting reduces airborne dust; it does not make the operation risk-free. Water, electricity, sharp edges, noise, flying fragments, and moving machinery still require attention.

Finishing and protecting the cut edge

A freshly cut edge can be sharp even when the cut line is straight. Run a tile-rubbing stone or sanding sponge lightly along the edge to remove the knife-like corner. Work gradually and check the fit often; excessive grinding can change the visible dimension.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Decide where the edge will be seen. A factory edge may be preferable at an exposed border, while a cut edge can be hidden under trim, a baseboard, or a properly sized joint. Do not rely on grout to conceal a major measurement error or a broken corner.

Troubleshooting common failures

The tile chips along the line

  • Confirm that the blade is rated for the tile body and is mounted correctly.
  • Reduce feed pressure and keep the tile fully supported.
  • Check that water is flowing over the blade throughout the pass.
  • For a manual cutter, make one continuous score rather than several partial scores.

The tile cracks away from the mark

  • Inspect the tile for a pre-existing flaw and replace it if necessary.
  • Recheck the layout; a cut that leaves a very narrow strip is more likely to fail.
  • Use a wet saw instead of a manual cutter for hard, thick, textured, or irregular pieces.

The cut line is inaccurate

  • Verify the guide is square and locked.
  • Measure the actual installation opening again, including the planned joint and clearance.
  • On handmade Saltillo, mark each tile individually rather than transferring one nominal dimension to every piece.

Dust is visible around a grinder cut

  • Stop and improve ventilation and source control before continuing.
  • Move the work outdoors or use an appropriate dust-extraction method compatible with the grinder.
  • Use the required respiratory protection and clean with wet methods or a HEPA-filtered vacuum instead of dry sweeping.

The saw blade is not receiving water

Stop cutting immediately. Check the reservoir level, pump, hose, nozzle, and blockages according to the saw manual. Do not continue until water reaches the blade and the tile-contact area.

A practical decision sequence

  1. Identify the body: confirm Saltillo terracotta, ceramic, porcelain, or another material, and measure thickness.
  2. Inspect the stock: remove cracked pieces and note handmade variation.
  3. Classify the cut: straight, narrow straight, L-shaped, curved, circular, or a cut on installed tile.
  4. Select the tool: manual cutter for suitable straight ceramic cuts; wet saw for repeated or demanding cuts; diamond-blade grinder for shaped work when dust controls are in place.
  5. Mark the actual piece: include joints, clearances, and the waste side.
  6. Control the work: stable support, correct blade, water flowing for wet cutting, and hands clear.
  7. Test and finish: dry-fit the piece, soften the edge, and only then install it.

Key takeaways for a successful installation

  • “Mexican tile” is not a sufficient material specification. Identify the tile body and thickness first.
  • For Saltillo, a continuous diamond blade on a properly set up wet saw is the preferred general method, with every tile measured and inspected separately.
  • Use a manual score-and-snap cutter only when the tile and straight-cut geometry suit it.
  • Use an angle grinder for shaped cuts or installed tile only with serious silica-dust controls.
  • Keep water flowing during wet cuts, support the work, wear eye and hand protection, and follow the equipment manufacturer’s instructions.
