The easiest way to clean out a pumpkin is to cut the opening in the bottom, not the top. Turn the pumpkin blossom-end up, mark a level circle, cut straight down with a serrated carving saw, and lift out the plug. After removing the seeds and pulp, the pumpkin can sit over a battery-operated light without a loose lid dropping into the cavity.
What to cut first
For the easiest cleanout, cut a level, circular opening through the pumpkin’s blossom end—the end opposite the stem—rather than removing the stem and cutting a lid from the top. Make the cut straight down, lift out the plug, scoop out the seeds and stringy pulp, and then set the hollow pumpkin over a battery-operated light.

This method leaves the stem and top shell intact, gives you a stable seating surface, and avoids the common problem of a slanted top lid falling into the pumpkin. A clean, straight cut also helps prevent the sides from caving in, provided you leave enough rind around the opening and do not scrape the shell excessively thin.

- A firm pumpkin with a reasonably flat bottom
- A washable marker or pencil
- A small serrated pumpkin saw or purpose-built carving tool
- A sturdy spoon, ice-cream scoop, or pumpkin scoop
- A stable work surface, preferably with a nonslip mat or folded towel
- A battery-operated LED tea light or glow stick
- A stencil, if you are using a pattern
A basic pumpkin carving kit is convenient because it usually combines a serrated saw and scoop, but it is not essential. A sturdy spoon can handle the cleanout, and the cutting tool matters more than having a large collection of accessories.
Step-by-step: cutting a pumpkin from the bottom
1. Choose a sound, stable pumpkin
Pick a pumpkin that feels firm and has no holes, cuts, bruises, or soft spots. Decay around the opening can weaken the shell and make the pumpkin collapse sooner. A flat-bottomed pumpkin is especially useful because it will stand securely when you finish carving it.

A firm stem is useful for positioning and handling, but do not lift or carry the pumpkin by its stem. Light-colored pumpkins may be somewhat easier to carve because their skin is often less hard, although firmness and condition are more important than color.
2. Wash and dry the outside
Rinse the pumpkin under cool or warm running water, then dry it thoroughly. Cleaning the exterior before cutting reduces the chance of transferring dirt and surface bacteria into the cut interior.

Turn the pumpkin so the blossom end faces upward. The blossom end is the small, usually indented area opposite the stem. Set the pumpkin on a towel so it does not roll while you mark it.
Draw a circle large enough for your hand or scoop to pass through. A roughly hand-width opening is a practical starting point, but the correct size depends on the pumpkin and the tool you will use. Leave a substantial ring of solid rind around the circle. That ring supports the pumpkin and helps keep the opening from tearing.
4. Cut straight down around the circle
Use a small serrated pumpkin saw or another tool designed for pumpkin carving. Keep the blade as perpendicular to the pumpkin as you can and make clean, up-and-down strokes. Do not angle the cut inward.
A straight cut produces a plug that is easier to remove and preserves more of the rind around the opening. It also helps the pumpkin sit evenly when you place it over a light. Keep your free hand away from the blade path, cut away from your body, and stop to reposition the pumpkin rather than forcing the tool.

5. Remove the bottom plug
When the circle is complete, gently lift the plug. If it sticks, make a few additional short cuts through any remaining strands. Do not twist forcefully; twisting can tear the rind or crack the pumpkin.
You can discard the plug or keep it for small decorative pieces. Unlike a top lid, it does not need to be replaced after the light is installed.
6. Scoop out the seeds and pulp
Remove the seeds first, then scrape the stringy pulp from the inside wall. Work around the entire cavity, paying particular attention to the area behind your intended design.
A sturdy spoon or ice-cream scoop works well. A dedicated pumpkin scoop or gutting claw can be faster when the pulp is thick or the pumpkin is large. Pull out handfuls of seeds and pulp before scraping; removing everything in one pass is usually slower than separating the loose contents from the strands clinging to the wall.

If you want to save the seeds, separate them from the pulp and refrigerate them promptly. A typical jack-o’-lantern is not the same as a pie pumpkin: its flesh is generally stringier and blander, so do not assume the carved pumpkin is suitable for cooking simply because it is technically edible.
7. Smooth and thin the carving area
Scrape the inner wall until it is reasonably even, especially behind the eyes, mouth, or other parts of the stencil that will be cut through. A more uniform wall is easier to penetrate with a carving saw and helps the design glow more consistently.

Do not keep scraping just to make the shell as thin as possible. Leave enough material to support the pumpkin, particularly around the bottom opening, the stem, narrow sections between design elements, and any area that will remain attached.
8. Transfer and carve the design
Draw the design directly with a washable marker, or attach a paper pattern and poke along its lines with a transfer tool. Make rough cuts first and remove the larger pieces. Refine the edges afterward instead of trying to make every cut perfect on the first pass.

Keep the saw moving with short strokes and avoid using excessive force. If the shell begins to flex substantially, stop and check whether you have removed too much inner wall.
9. Install the light underneath
Place a battery-operated LED tea light or glow stick on a level, nonflammable surface. Set the hollow pumpkin over it so the light shines through the carved openings.
Battery-operated lighting is the preferred choice for a carved pumpkin. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and the National Fire Protection Association recommend battery-operated lights or glow sticks instead of open flames. If you use a real candle anyway, keep the pumpkin away from curtains, leaves, paper, siding, and other combustible materials, and have an adult watch it continuously.
Before giving a battery-powered light to children or placing it where children can reach it, inspect the battery compartment. Button-cell batteries can cause serious injury if swallowed. Check current recall information for the specific light or kit, particularly if it includes small coin or button batteries.

| Bottom opening | Top lid |
|---|---|
| The stem and top shell remain intact for handling. | Removing the stem can make the top harder to handle. |
| A level cut lets the pumpkin sit over a light source. | A slanted lid can slip or fall into the cavity. |
| The shell can rest on a broad ring of rind. | An uneven lid may shift during display. |
| A straight plug is less likely to become trapped inside. | Angled cuts can wedge the lid or weaken the rim. |
Bottom-cutting is not a guarantee against collapse. A soft pumpkin, an oversized opening, an angled cut, or aggressive scraping can still make the shell unstable. The method works best when the pumpkin is firm and the supporting rind is preserved.

Safety rules that matter
- Adults should do the cutting. Children can help wash the pumpkin, scoop out the interior with a spoon, or trace a design. CPSC reports that pumpkin carving accounted for 55% of Halloween-related injuries in the three-year estimate cited in its safety guidance.
- Use a stable work surface. Put a towel or nonslip mat beneath the pumpkin and keep the work area dry.
- Use a serrated carving saw rather than forcing a large kitchen knife. A purpose-built saw is generally easier to control for this task, though no tool eliminates injury risk.
- Cut away from your body. Keep your other hand behind the blade path and never hold the pumpkin in your lap.
- Do not force a stuck blade or plug. Withdraw the tool, reposition it, and make several short cuts.
- Prefer flameless lighting. Heat from a candle can cook the pumpkin flesh and shorten its life, as well as create a fire hazard.
Optional tools: what is actually worth using?
- Basic pumpkin carving kit: The best all-purpose choice for most people. Look for a comfortable serrated saw and a scoop.
- Pumpkin scoop or gutting claw: Helpful for quickly removing stringy pulp, but a sturdy household spoon or ice-cream scoop is an effective alternative.
- Bottom-cutter tool: Some specialized sets include a saw intended specifically for making a bottom opening. A Grampa Bardeen pumpkin carving set is one example described by its manufacturer as including bottom cutters, scoops, saws, pokers, and drills; check the current contents and availability before buying.
- Powered detail tool: The Dremel 7350-PMP Basic Pumpkin Carving Tool Kit is intended for pumpkin-carving projects and may suit intricate designs. It is unnecessary for a simple bottom opening and requires following the manufacturer’s operating guidance.
For a first pumpkin, spend effort on a sound pumpkin, a stable work surface, and a controlled serrated saw rather than buying specialized equipment.

The plug will not come out
There is probably a short section of uncut rind. Trace the circle with the saw again, making short vertical cuts. Lift the plug gently once the cut is complete. Avoid levering hard against the shell.
The opening is uneven
Place the pumpkin on its intended display surface and identify the high points. Carefully trim only the high points from the plug or the surrounding edge. Leave the supporting ring as wide and strong as possible.
The pumpkin rocks after cutting
Check whether the original bottom was flat and whether the opening was cut at an angle. A small, stable shim beneath the light can help level the display, but do not use a setup that makes the pumpkin easy to knock over. If the shell is soft or cracked, replace the pumpkin rather than trying to repair it.
The pumpkin walls are collapsing
Stop carving and inspect the shell. Collapse usually indicates decay, an overly large opening, or too much inner wall removed. Move the pumpkin to a cool location and support it only if the support does not create a fire or tipping hazard. A seriously soft pumpkin is not worth displaying.
The design will not glow evenly
Scrape a little more pulp from behind dark sections of the design, but do not thin the whole shell indiscriminately. Move the LED light toward the center and make sure it is standing level. A brighter light is not always the answer if thick pulp is blocking the design.

How long will a carved pumpkin last?
Expect roughly seven to ten days under favorable conditions, although weather, pumpkin condition, humidity, insects, and handling can change that considerably. Carve closer to the date you plan to display it when possible.
Recommended Free Tools
Keep the pumpkin cool and out of direct sun, rain, and other heat sources. Warm conditions accelerate mold and cause a carved jack-o’-lantern to soften and collapse. Bring it indoors or under cover during extreme weather, but avoid placing it next to a heater or in a hot, enclosed space.
Bottom-opening checklist
- Choose a firm pumpkin with no soft spots and a stable base.
- Wash and dry the exterior before cutting.
- Mark the blossom end, leaving a wide supporting rim.
- Cut straight down with a serrated carving saw.
- Lift the plug gently and recut any stubborn sections.
- Remove seeds and scrape away stringy pulp.
- Thin the wall behind the design without weakening the shell.
- Carve with short, controlled strokes.
- Use a battery-operated light or glow stick underneath.
- Display the finished pumpkin somewhere cool, dry, and away from combustible materials.
Sources and safety guidance
The method and care recommendations are consistent with guidance from Good Housekeeping, Penn State Extension, Illinois Extension, the University of Minnesota Extension, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, and the National Fire Protection Association. Tool-specific details come from the manufacturers’ descriptions for Dremel and Grampa Bardeen. Check current product instructions and recall notices before using any carving tool or battery-powered light.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do you cut a pumpkin from the bottom?
Turn the pumpkin so the blossom end faces up, mark a hand-sized circle, and cut straight down with a small serrated pumpkin saw. Leave a wide ring of rind around the opening, then lift out the plug and scoop out the seeds and stringy pulp.
Why cut a pumpkin from the bottom instead of the top?
A bottom opening leaves the stem and top shell intact, allows the pumpkin to sit over a light, and avoids the problem of a slanted top lid dropping into the cavity. It can also help reduce side collapse when the pumpkin remains firm and is not over-scraped.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Do I need a special pumpkin scoop?
Yes. A sturdy spoon or ice-cream scoop can remove seeds and pulp. A dedicated pumpkin scoop or gutting claw may be faster, especially for a large pumpkin, but it is optional.
What is the safest way to carve a pumpkin?
Adults should do the cutting. Children can help wash the pumpkin, scoop the interior with a spoon, or trace the design. Use a stable surface, keep the free hand away from the blade, cut away from the body, and use battery-operated lighting instead of an open flame.
How long does a carved pumpkin last?
A carved pumpkin commonly lasts about seven to ten days, depending on its starting condition and the weather. Keep it cool, shaded, and protected from rain and heat, and carve closer to Halloween when possible.
The Bottom Line
Cut a level circle straight down through the blossom end, leave a strong rind around the opening, scoop out the pumpkin, and set it over a battery-operated light. The intact top and stem make handling easier, while the bottom opening avoids a loose lid and provides a stable display arrangement.
