How to Create a Dragonfly Garden: Build a Wildlife Pond

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The most useful feature in a dragonfly garden is a wildlife pond: dragonfly larvae develop in water, while plants around the pond provide perches and habitat for prey. Give the pond varied depths, a gently sloping edge, clean water, and a mix of open water and suitable plants. A new pond may take time to mature, and dragonflies are not guaranteed to move in.

The practical guidance and plant examples below are mainly from UK sources. If you live elsewhere, choose plants native to your region and check local guidance on invasive aquatic species.

How do I create a pond for dragonflies?

Where space allows, start with a ground-level wildlife pond. The British Dragonfly Society recommends a garden pond of at least 2 m²; that is UK guidance, not a universal minimum or a guarantee that dragonflies will use a pond. Its guide also describes a sunny site away from overhanging trees, a naturally shaped outline, shallow margins, deeper water toward the middle, and patches of open surface as useful design choices. 1. Choose a site and size. A larger ground pond gives you more room to include a range of depths, planted areas, and clear water. If you have only a patio or courtyard, a container pond can still benefit wildlife, but its limited space may not provide the variety of habitat dragonflies need to breed.
  2. Shape the pond for access. Include shallow water and deeper water rather than making the whole pond one uniform depth. Provide at least one gently sloping edge so wildlife can enter and leave. For a steep-sided feature, the Royal Horticultural Society suggests using shallow margins, rocks, a partly submerged branch, or a ramp.
  3. Leave some water open. Plant the pond, but do not cover the whole surface. Open water provides room for swimming and may be used by some species when laying eggs.
  4. Build in a safe route out. Emergent stems and other suitable supports give larvae a way to climb out of the water as they become adults.

The British Dragonfly Society says a garden pond can attract up to 17 dragonfly species. This is a stated potential in its 2025 guide, not an expected count for every garden; species differ in their habitat and pond-size preferences. British Dragonfly Society, 2025 guide

What plants should I put in a dragonfly pond?

Choose plants by the job they do, then check that each species suits your region, climate, and pond size. The named plants below are UK examples, not a universal planting list.

Plant role What it contributes UK examples or guidance
Submerged Underwater cover for larvae and other pond life Hornwort and water starwort are examples given by the RHS; check local suitability before planting.
Emergent Stems that larvae can climb when leaving the water to become adults Water iris is an RHS example; choose a species suited to your region and pond.
Floating-leaved Resting surfaces and, where appropriate, shade Use with restraint and keep areas of clear surface water.
Marginal and surrounding plants Vegetation around the water can provide habitat and perches Pair plants with some exposed rocks, stones, bare ground, or wood at the edge.

The RHS wildlife pond guidance recommends a mix of plant types. If vegetation becomes excessive, retain clear areas of water surface; Devon County Council also advises keeping open water. Avoid invasive aquatic plants, and check regional conservation guidance before introducing any species.

For Britain, the RHS says mid-spring to early summer is generally the best time to plant a wildlife pond, once the water has warmed and plants are growing. In other climates, use local planting advice rather than relying on that calendar.

How do I keep the pond suitable for larvae?

  • Keep it fish-free if larvae are the priority. The British Dragonfly Society says fish eat dragonfly larvae. Ornamental fish and a pond designed to encourage dragonfly larvae are competing goals in a typical garden wildlife pond.
  • Avoid pesticides near the water. They can harm pond wildlife.
  • Keep runoff and soil out. Fertilizer-rich runoff adds nutrients, while excess soil can add silt; both can degrade water quality. Consider how rainwater moves across the site when choosing and shaping the pond.
  • Do not clear every plant or organism from a new pond. A pond may need time to mature and develop an adequate food supply for nymphs to survive.

Can I attract dragonflies with a small pond or container pond?

A container pond is a useful option when a ground-level pond is not practical, and even a small water feature can benefit wildlife. But its smaller volume and limited space make it harder to provide varied depths, open water, and several plant roles. Do not assume a container pond will support breeding for all dragonfly species. The Society’s 2 m² recommendation is UK guidance for a garden pond, not a threshold that predicts success everywhere.

Why aren’t dragonflies using my new pond?

There is no guaranteed timetable for dragonflies to find or breed in a pond. Devon County Council notes that a pond may need to mature and develop enough food for nymphs to survive; it also says dragonflies and damselflies can travel long distances to find water. A pond can provide suitable habitat without being colonized, and different species have different preferences.

Check the conditions you can control: the water is clean, fish are absent if larvae matter, some water remains open, and the pond offers a range of depths, an accessible sloping edge, and suitable vegetation. Give the habitat time to develop rather than repeatedly stripping it back. If you are outside Britain, consult local native-plant and conservation guidance for species and pond practices suited to your area.
