Run an HDMI cable from the TV port labeled HDMI ARC or HDMI eARC to the soundbar port labeled HDMI OUT (TV-ARC/eARC) or HDMI TO TV (eARC/ARC). Then select the soundbar in the TV’s sound-output menu and enable Anynet+ (HDMI-CEC).
If your TV lacks ARC/eARC, use optical. Bluetooth is convenient but can introduce delay, while Wi-Fi works only with compatible Samsung models. Menu names vary by TV year, region, firmware, and model.

Quick connection guide
Samsung TV HDMI ARC/eARC ───── HDMI cable ───── Soundbar HDMI OUT (TV-ARC/eARC)
- Turn off the TV and soundbar.
- Connect the TV’s ARC/eARC port to the soundbar’s TV-labeled HDMI output.
- Turn on both devices.
- On the TV, open Settings > All Settings > Sound > Sound Output and select the soundbar. Some models use Speaker Select or Speaker Settings.
- Open Settings > General > External Device Manager > Anynet+ (HDMI-CEC) and turn it on. The exact location can differ on newer models.
- Set the soundbar source to D.IN if it does not automatically switch to TV ARC or TV eARC.
- Play a TV channel or streaming service and test volume and mute.
Samsung’s official setup guidance identifies the TV’s ARC-labeled port and the soundbar’s HDMI OUT TV-ARC port as the required connection points. See Samsung’s soundbar setup guide.
Before you begin
- Find the model numbers of the TV and soundbar. Compatibility for eARC, Wi-Fi, Dolby Atmos, and Q-Symphony depends on the exact models.
- Have the soundbar remote available if possible.
- Prepare one suitable connection: HDMI, optical/Toslink, Bluetooth, or Wi-Fi through SmartThings.
- Make sure both devices have power.
- Have a known-working TV program, streaming app, or external source ready for testing.
- If detection fails, check for firmware updates for both devices.
Do not connect the soundbar’s HDMI IN port to the TV’s ARC port for the normal TV-audio setup. The soundbar connection must use its HDMI output labeled for the TV.

Which connection should you choose?
| Situation | Recommended connection | Important trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Both devices support eARC | HDMI eARC | Requires compatible equipment, cable, settings, and content. |
| TV and soundbar support ARC but not eARC | HDMI ARC | Generally less capable than eARC for high-bandwidth formats. |
| Older TV or unreliable HDMI connection | Optical | Fewer HDMI-control and audio-format features. |
| No practical cable route | Bluetooth | Possible delay, interference, or dropouts. |
| Compatible Samsung ecosystem | Wi-Fi/SmartThings | Model- and network-dependent. |
HDMI eARC
Choose eARC when both devices support it. It uses one cable, carries audio from TV apps, supports HDMI-CEC control, and is generally the most capable route for compatible high-quality, lossless, or object-based audio formats. Actual results depend on the TV, soundbar, source, codec, and settings.
On many Samsung TVs, open Settings > Sound > Expert Settings and set HDMI-eARC Mode to Auto. Dolby Atmos options may also appear, but they should be enabled only when the TV, soundbar, and content support them. Samsung’s eARC troubleshooting guidance also recommends compatible cabling and current firmware.
HDMI ARC
ARC is the best general-purpose option when eARC is unavailable. It sends audio from TV broadcasts and apps through one HDMI cable and can allow the Samsung TV remote to control volume and mute. The cable must use the TV’s specifically labeled HDMI ARC port, not an ordinary HDMI input.
A certified, working High Speed HDMI cable with Ethernet is usually the sensible starting point. An expensive branded cable is not automatically required; replace the cable only when the existing one is damaged, unreliable, or cannot complete the connection.
Method 1: Connect with HDMI ARC or eARC
- Locate the TV port labeled HDMI ARC or HDMI eARC.
- Locate the soundbar port labeled HDMI OUT (TV-ARC), HDMI OUT (eARC/ARC), or HDMI TO TV (eARC/ARC).
- Connect one end of the HDMI cable to the TV ARC/eARC port.
- Connect the other end to the soundbar’s TV-labeled HDMI output.
- Turn on the TV and soundbar.
- Select the soundbar under the TV’s sound-output menu.
- Enable Anynet+ (HDMI-CEC).
- Press the soundbar’s Source button and choose D.IN if automatic detection does not occur.
- Wait several seconds. A successful connection may change the soundbar display to TV ARC or TV eARC.
Confirm that the TV remote changes the soundbar volume, mute works, and audio comes from the soundbar rather than the television speakers.

Method 2: Connect with an optical cable
Optical is a reliable fallback for older TVs or persistent HDMI ARC problems. It is broadly compatible and electrically separate from HDMI-CEC issues, but it does not offer the same control behavior or bandwidth as eARC.
- Remove the protective caps from both ends of the optical cable.
- Connect the TV’s Optical Digital Audio Out to the soundbar’s Optical In.
- Turn on both devices.
- Set the soundbar source to D.IN, OPTICAL, or the equivalent label.
- In the TV’s sound-output menu, select Optical, Digital Audio Out, or the external optical speaker option.
- Play content and test the result.
If there is no audio, set the TV’s digital-audio format to PCM as a diagnostic test. PCM may not be the preferred final setting for every system, but it can reveal whether an encoded format is being rejected. Some newer Samsung configurations may also require Simultaneous Optical Output.

Optical can support surround formats on compatible equipment, but capability varies by TV, soundbar, and encoded content. Samsung’s connection overview explains the main optical and HDMI routes.
Method 3: Connect by Bluetooth
Bluetooth is useful when running a cable is impractical. It may, however, produce more latency or less stable playback than a wired connection, particularly for dialogue and gaming.
- Turn on the soundbar.
- Press Source until Bluetooth is selected.
- Enter pairing mode, commonly by holding the Bluetooth or Source control until BT PAIRING appears.
- On the TV, open Settings > Sound > Bluetooth Speaker List.
- Select the soundbar and accept the pairing prompt.
- Play content and check lip-sync.
If the soundbar is not listed, move it closer to the TV, disconnect it from another paired device, re-enter pairing mode, and restart both products. Nearby wireless routers, microwaves, and other sources of interference can affect Bluetooth stability. For persistent delay or dropouts, use HDMI ARC/eARC or optical.

Method 4: Connect through Wi-Fi and SmartThings
Wi-Fi audio is not universal. Use it only when the particular Samsung TV and soundbar support the feature. Both devices generally need to be on the same Wi-Fi network.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Connect the TV and soundbar to the same Wi-Fi network.
- Install or update the SmartThings app on a compatible phone or tablet.
- Put the soundbar into Wi-Fi mode.
- In SmartThings, tap the add-device control.
- Choose Device > AV, select the soundbar category, and follow the prompts.
- Choose the home location and room.
- Return to the TV’s sound settings and select the Wi-Fi audio device where supported.
If discovery fails, reconnect both devices to the same network and repeat setup. On some model-and-router combinations, a router using a DFS channel can prevent the soundbar from connecting.
Q-Symphony: when the TV and soundbar play together
Q-Symphony can combine compatible Samsung TV speakers with compatible Samsung soundbars or wireless audio devices. The Samsung brand alone does not guarantee support. Check the specifications and software requirements for both exact models.
For a compatible wired setup, use HDMI ARC/eARC or optical. Older models may use D.IN as the source; Samsung says some 2024-and-newer soundbars may require the ARC/eARC source selection. For Wi-Fi, register the soundbar in SmartThings first and keep both devices on the same network. The TV may then show Q-Symphony Setup or a similar option.
Availability varies by model year, region, and firmware. Samsung’s Q-Symphony guidance provides model-specific distinctions.

Connecting a console, streaming box, or Blu-ray player
Connect the external device to the TV
Streaming box or console → TV HDMI input
TV HDMI ARC/eARC → soundbar HDMI OUT TV-ARC/eARC
This is usually the simplest arrangement because the TV handles input switching and sends audio back to the soundbar through ARC/eARC.
Connect the external device to the soundbar
Streaming box or console → soundbar HDMI IN
soundbar HDMI OUT TV-ARC/eARC → TV HDMI ARC/eARC
This can help when the soundbar has the required HDMI input and the TV does not pass a desired audio format through its ARC/eARC path. It uses one of the soundbar’s HDMI inputs and requires compatible video pass-through. Available ports differ by model.
Verify the completed setup
- Audio comes from the soundbar, not both the TV and soundbar.
- The soundbar display shows the expected input: TV ARC, TV eARC, D.IN, OPTICAL, BT, or Wi-Fi.
- The TV remote changes volume and mute.
- The TV and soundbar power behavior works as expected when HDMI-CEC or optical auto-link features are supported.
- Dialogue matches the actors’ mouths.
- Compatible surround or Atmos content produces the expected signal indication.
Troubleshooting
No sound at all
- Disconnect the soundbar and confirm the TV itself produces audio.
- Confirm that the soundbar is powered on.
- Select the external soundbar, optical output, or Bluetooth speaker in the TV’s sound menu.
- Select the matching source on the soundbar.
- Check that both cable ends are fully inserted.
- For HDMI, verify that the TV port is ARC/eARC and the soundbar port is HDMI OUT TV-ARC/eARC.
- Try a known-good replacement cable.
- Disconnect other HDMI devices and restart only the TV and soundbar.
- Update both devices’ firmware.
- Test the soundbar with another compatible source or TV to isolate the failing component.
Samsung’s no-sound troubleshooting flow recommends these port, source, cable, and cross-testing checks.
The soundbar stays on D.IN instead of TV ARC
This commonly means the cable is in the wrong TV port, the soundbar cable is in HDMI IN, Anynet+ is disabled, the cable is faulty, or the HDMI handshake has failed.
- Power off both devices.
- Disconnect other HDMI devices temporarily.
- Connect only the TV ARC/eARC port to the soundbar HDMI OUT TV-ARC/eARC port.
- Enable Anynet+.
- Select D.IN on the soundbar and wait for TV ARC/eARC detection.
- Replace the HDMI cable if the source never changes.
- If possible, test with another ARC/eARC television.
Audio cuts out
Reseat or replace the cable, remove other HDMI devices during testing, update firmware, and try PCM temporarily to check for an unsupported audio format. For Bluetooth, reduce interference and move the devices closer. For Wi-Fi, verify the network and investigate router-band or DFS-channel compatibility.

Bluetooth works but audio is delayed
Look for Digital Audio Delay, Audio Sync, or Lip Sync controls. If the delay remains noticeable, switch to HDMI ARC/eARC or optical, especially for gaming, live television, and dialogue-heavy films.
The TV remote does not control the soundbar
- HDMI: verify Anynet+ is enabled.
- Optical: select the external optical output and enable Auto Power Link on the soundbar where supported.
- Bluetooth or Wi-Fi: remote behavior is more model-specific.
- Universal remote: Samsung-specific control features may not carry over.
Both the TV and soundbar play audio
Return to the TV’s sound-output menu and select the soundbar or external speaker option rather than TV Speaker. If Q-Symphony is intentionally enabled, simultaneous playback may be expected—but only on compatible devices.
When replacing equipment makes sense
Do not replace a working soundbar before checking the cable, correct port, source, audio-output setting, Anynet+, firmware, and compatibility. A replacement HDMI or optical cable may solve the problem, and an optical connection may be sufficient when the TV has no ARC/eARC.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Consider a new soundbar only when the current unit lacks the necessary input, has a hardware fault, cannot support the desired audio format, or is incompatible with the TV. Samsung’s model range is not interchangeable: packages differ in channel configuration, subwoofer and rear-speaker inclusion, HDMI capability, Wi-Fi, and Q-Symphony support. Current models and availability change, so verify specifications on the official Samsung soundbar category page rather than relying on a model-year assumption.
If nothing works
Repeat the setup with only the TV and soundbar connected, use a known-good cable, update firmware, and perform the manufacturer’s model-specific reset procedure. If the soundbar works with another source but not this TV, the TV port, setting, or HDMI handshake is the likely focus. If it fails with multiple sources, consult the exact model support page or Samsung service.
