Short answer: connect a balcony battery to a microinverter only when the battery is explicitly designed for AC coupling and its current manual identifies the permitted AC connection. In documented EcoFlow STREAM AC Pro and Jackery balcony-storage arrangements, the microinverter’s AC output plugs into a designated battery-system AC socket or input, while the battery’s bidirectional inverter manages charging. That is not permission to wire a battery to an ordinary microinverter PV/DC input, and an AC socket marked “output” is not automatically an input.
Because compatibility depends on the exact battery model, microinverter model, country, connector and electrical limits, no safe universal wiring diagram exists. Use the verification sequence below before plugging anything in; if either manual is unclear, stop and obtain written manufacturer guidance or a qualified electrician’s help.

What AC coupling means in a balcony system
Solar panels produce direct current (DC). A microinverter converts that DC into alternating current (AC) for household use or export. An AC-coupled battery is built to receive that already-converted AC through a specified connection, then use its own inverter and charger controls to store energy and later supply AC loads.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThis architecture is different from connecting a battery to the PV/DC terminals of a conventional microinverter. Those terminals are engineered for panel voltage, current, polarity, startup behavior and isolation. A battery can have a completely different electrical profile. Unless the microinverter manufacturer explicitly documents battery operation on that input, an adapter or improvised cable is unsafe and may destroy both devices.

AC input versus AC output
Manufacturers often use “AC socket,” “AC outlet,” or “grid port” for different functions. One may be an output intended only for appliances; another may be a bidirectional port that accepts a microinverter. Read the port diagram and connection table for your exact model. The physical shape of a plug does not prove that power can flow in the required direction.
Why the battery’s controls matter
In an approved AC-coupled design, the battery monitors incoming AC, controls charging current, protects its cells, and coordinates discharge or export. It may also need an app setting, a smart meter, a grid connection or a particular operating mode. Bypassing those controls removes the protections the product was certified around.

| Check | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Exact identity | Full battery model and revision, microinverter model, plug/cable part number and country of installation. | Compatibility lists and electrical limits can differ between generations and regions. |
| Topology | The battery manual expressly permits a microinverter’s AC output to charge the battery, not merely an AC outlet for loads. | An output-only receptacle cannot safely be used as an input. |
| Microinverter support | The battery’s approved-brand or approved-model list, and any restriction on mixed series. | “Compatible with microinverters” is not a guarantee for every model. |
| Power rating | Battery maximum AC input and microinverter rated AC output under the same voltage and frequency conditions. | The microinverter must remain within the battery’s stated input limit. |
| Electrical characteristics | Voltage, frequency, phase, grounding, protection requirements and permitted current. | A plug that fits can still be electrically wrong. |
| Connectors | Correct manufacturer cable, adapter and pinout; no gender changers or homemade leads. | Incorrect conductors or polarity can cause shock, fire or equipment damage. |
| Configuration | Required app, meter, grid profile, firmware, pairing sequence and operating mode. | The system may refuse to charge or behave unpredictably if commissioning is incomplete. |
| Installation environment | Indoor/outdoor rating, temperature, moisture, clearances and mounting requirements. | Balcony exposure can exceed the battery’s permitted conditions. |
| Legal permission | Local rules for plug-in generation, anti-islanding, export limits, inspection and utility approval. | Technical compatibility does not establish permission to connect to the grid. |
A model-by-model verification procedure
- Record the equipment. Photograph the rating labels and write down the complete battery and microinverter model numbers, firmware versions if shown, and the installation country. Do not rely on a product family name alone.
- Download current manuals. Use the manufacturer’s documentation for that region and revision. Locate the sections titled connection, AC input, balcony storage, microinverter, limits and commissioning. Marketing pages may describe a family broadly; the manual controls the installation.
- Confirm the approved energy path. Look for a diagram showing the microinverter connected to the battery system’s designated AC input or bidirectional socket. If the only diagram shows appliances connected to an AC output, do not reverse the direction.
- Check the rating relationship. Compare the microinverter’s maximum rated AC output with the battery’s maximum AC input for the exact model. Jackery’s EU guide states that the microinverter output must not exceed the unit’s maximum AC input. If the manual gives different limits for grid-connected, off-grid or multi-input operation, use the limit for your actual configuration.
- Verify voltage, frequency and protection. Confirm that the microinverter’s regional grid profile matches the battery system and local supply. Check earthing, residual-current protection, overcurrent protection and any required disconnect. Do not change a grid profile to force operation in another country.
- Match the physical connection. Use only the specified connector and cable. Hiconics documentation warns that connector models must match and that a wrong cable connection may damage equipment. Never infer a pinout from wire colours or from a similar-looking product.
- Check pairing and quantity limits. Determine whether the battery accepts one microinverter only, a particular number of units, or a named list of models. EcoFlow’s STREAM AC Pro instructions recommend integrating only one microinverter and note that third-party models may require extra steps.
- Complete required setup. Install the manufacturer app, update firmware where instructed, add the battery and meter, select the permitted operating mode and enter any grid or export settings. A system that powers on is not necessarily commissioned.
- Use the prescribed energizing order. Follow the manual’s sequence for connecting AC, turning on the battery, enabling the microinverter and closing any disconnects. Enphase safety instructions warn not to energize equipment before installation procedures are complete or operate it outside its specified instructions.
- Verify operation without exceeding limits. Observe the first charging cycle in the app or display. Confirm that AC input is detected, power remains below the stated limit, temperatures and fault indicators are normal, and shutdown controls work. Record the final settings and cable part numbers for future service.
This is a documentation and commissioning sequence, not a substitute for opening equipment or rewiring a live circuit. If a manual does not explicitly support the proposed pairing, leave the system de-energized and contact the manufacturer or a qualified electrician.
Documented product approaches
The following examples show how manufacturers describe AC coupling. They illustrate product-specific designs; they do not establish compatibility with an unnamed battery or microinverter.
| Product or system | What its documentation says | Limits and cautions |
|---|---|---|
| EcoFlow STREAM AC Pro | The user manual says, "Connect a microinverter that complies with local regulations to add power input." It describes plugging an existing microinverter into the device’s AC outlet for solar charging. | Third-party microinverters may need additional steps. The manual recommends integrating only one microinverter with STREAM and requires compliance with local regulations. |
| Jackery Balcony Energy Storage System (EU guide) | The built-in bidirectional inverter allows a microinverter to plug into the system’s AC socket to charge the battery. | The microinverter output must stay within the specific unit’s maximum AC input. The guide lists Enphase, Hoymiles and APS among mainstream brands and cautions against mixing devices from different series. Confirm the exact current model and regional guide. |
| APsystems EZHI | APsystems describes an AC-coupled balcony storage system intended to integrate with existing balcony microinverter systems. | That general description does not replace confirmation of the exact microinverter model and supported battery-pack list. |
| Growatt AURA 5000 | Growatt markets the unit as AC-coupled storage with broad microinverter compatibility and retrofit installation without rewiring. | These are manufacturer claims, not independent confirmation of every pairing. Use the current manual for the installation model and region. |
| Hoymiles HiBattery AC | Hoymiles describes a balcony micro-storage system using AC coupling to connect with a microinverter or home socket. | Verify the exact socket function, input limits, commissioning method and local permission in the model manual. |
How to interpret power ratings
The relevant comparison is the microinverter’s maximum AC output against the battery’s maximum permitted AC input in your operating mode. Do not substitute the solar panels’ nameplate wattage, the battery’s storage capacity in watt-hours, or the AC outlet’s load rating for that input figure.

One microinverter can still be too large
A battery may accept only a limited AC charging power even when its storage capacity is large. Conversely, a small battery may have a higher short-duration input limit than its energy capacity suggests. Use the manufacturer’s stated continuous and, if provided, temporary limits; never assume that a brief overload is acceptable.

Some products publish different AC limits when solar DC, grid charging, a smart meter or another input is active. Read the table for the complete system state rather than using the largest number printed anywhere in the manual.
Stay within the microinverter’s own conditions
The microinverter still needs panels within its voltage and current window, a permitted grid profile and the manufacturer’s required protection. An AC-coupled battery does not make an incorrectly sized or uncertified microinverter safe.

Physical installation and commissioning cautions
Do not improvise adapters
Use the supplied or explicitly approved cable. A passive plug adapter can conceal a different pinout, missing protective earth, inadequate conductor size or an unsupported direction of power flow. If a cable is unavailable, ask the battery manufacturer for the exact part number rather than buying a visually similar lead.
Keep equipment within its environmental rating
Balconies expose equipment to rain, condensation, dust, salt air and temperature swings. Install the battery and connectors only where the manual permits, with its stated clearances and ventilation. Keep plugs off standing water and prevent cable strain at the socket.

Respect anti-islanding and grid rules
A grid-connected microinverter must disconnect when the grid is absent. The battery’s operating mode must not defeat that protection or energize wiring that utility workers believe is dead. Check local requirements for plug-in generation, export limitation, inspection and utility notification; EcoFlow’s microinverter manual specifically directs users to check local requirements and consult a qualified electrician.

What to do when the system will not charge
| Symptom | Likely checks | Safe response |
|---|---|---|
| No AC input shown | Wrong socket, disabled input mode, incomplete app pairing, open disconnect or microinverter not producing. | De-energize according to the manual, confirm the port designation and settings, then follow the prescribed restart sequence. Do not move the plug to another socket experimentally. |
| Input-power fault or overload | Microinverter output exceeds the battery’s model-specific limit, or another input is changing the limit. | Shut down as instructed and resolve the rating mismatch. Do not rely on software limiting unless the manufacturer explicitly approves that arrangement. |
| Connector or cable warning | Wrong regional cable, incompatible series, damaged plug or poor insertion. | Disconnect only when the manual says it is safe, inspect for heat or damage and obtain the specified part. Do not repair a molded connector yourself. |
| Battery charges but will not discharge | Operating mode, state-of-charge reserve, meter pairing or export setting. | Check the documented mode and reserve settings. If the display reports a protection fault, stop and contact support rather than bypassing it. |
| Microinverter repeatedly restarts | Grid-profile mismatch, unstable supply, anti-islanding operation or an unsupported third-party pairing. | Leave the system off, verify the regional profile and compatibility list, and have the installation checked by a qualified electrician. |
| Heat, smell, arcing or water ingress | Damaged connector, overloaded circuit, moisture or internal failure. | Isolate power if it can be done without touching damaged parts, keep people away and seek urgent manufacturer or electrical assistance. Do not continue testing. |
How to choose between AC-coupled balcony systems
Compare the following items before buying a battery for an existing microinverter. A larger advertised battery capacity does not compensate for an unsupported connection.
- Exact compatibility list: Prefer a system that names your microinverter model or series, not merely a broad statement such as “works with most microinverters.”
- Input headroom: Check the maximum AC input for the complete configuration, including other charging sources and grid operation.
- Connector availability: Confirm that the correct regional cable is supplied or available as an approved accessory.
- Third-party procedure: Find out whether a third-party microinverter needs a special app workflow, firmware, meter or a one-unit limit.
- Monitoring: Verify which app or meter shows AC input, battery state of charge, faults and export; monitoring gaps make commissioning harder.
- Operating modes: Check whether the system supports self-consumption, zero export, backup or off-grid operation, and which modes are legal in your location.
- Service and documentation: Ensure that manuals, replacement cables and technical support are available for the region where the equipment will remain installed.
A practical decision rule
- If the battery manual shows a designated bidirectional AC input for a microinverter and lists your exact microinverter or an explicitly supported series, continue to rating and installation checks.
- If it mentions only an AC load outlet, stop; that is not evidence of AC-coupled charging.
- If the battery accepts AC input but your microinverter is absent from the compatibility information, ask the manufacturer whether the pairing is approved in writing. Do not infer approval from the plug type or from another product in the same family.
- If the microinverter output is above the battery’s permitted input, select a different pairing or redesign the system. Software settings are not a substitute for a compliant rating.
- If local grid or electrical requirements are uncertain, have the complete arrangement reviewed before energizing it.
Records to keep after installation
Save the manuals, compatibility confirmation, model and serial numbers, cable part numbers, firmware versions, commissioning date, electrician’s test results and any utility approval. Label the battery socket and disconnects according to the manufacturer’s scheme. These records prevent a future owner or technician from connecting a different microinverter based only on a matching plug.
