How to Compare Structural Steel Grades for Data Center and Semiconductor Buildings

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no universally best structural-steel grade for a data center or semiconductor building. The appropriate specification depends on the member’s product form, the locally adopted building code, loading and seismic hazards, required strength and stiffness, vibration and deflection limits, connection and fabrication requirements, exposure protection, procurement conditions, and lifecycle cost. A grade that is efficient for a wide-flange column may not be the right specification for an HSS brace or a plate connection.

For a US project, begin with the adopted building code, the applicable edition of ASCE/SEI 7 for loads, and the AISC 360 and AISC 341 provisions that govern the selected structural system. For an international project, use the standards and material designations adopted by the authority having jurisdiction; do not transfer US grade names without confirming equivalence.

What a steel grade does—and does not—tell you

A steel grade identifies a material specification and its required properties, but it does not design a building by itself. The same grade can behave very differently when used in a slender column, a compact beam, a truss chord, an HSS brace, or a thick connection plate. Member geometry, unbraced length, connection stiffness, load combinations, fire protection, and construction tolerances can control the design even when the material has ample nominal strength.

Data centers and semiconductor facilities make this distinction especially important. Their structures may carry heavy mechanical and electrical equipment, concentrated loads, large roof plant, cable and utility systems, maintenance traffic, and future replacement loads. Semiconductor production areas can also impose unusually strict limits on vibration, deflection, drift, settlement, and movement at sensitive tools. Those requirements must be established with the owner and equipment vendors before a material choice is finalized.

Use a grade comparison to answer a project question such as which specification satisfies this member and system at the lowest justified total cost? Do not use it to create a universal ranking of A36, A572, A992, A913, A500, or A1085.

Start with the standards adopted for the project

US building-code framework

On a US project, identify the building code adopted by the jurisdiction and its amendments first. The code determines the risk category, occupancy provisions, fire-resistance obligations, and which structural standards are enforceable. Then confirm the edition of ASCE/SEI 7 referenced by that code. ASCE describes ASCE/SEI 7-22 as the current nationally adopted general loading standard in its US framing. It addresses dead, live, soil, flood, tsunami, snow, rain, ice, seismic, wind, and fire loads, together with load combinations; the locally adopted edition and amendments govern the actual project.

For steel-member design, use the edition of the AISC Specification for Structural Steel Buildings adopted or referenced by the project. AISC provides its current 360 page at aisc.org/aisc/publications/current-standards/aisc-360/. The AISC 360-22 material table, reproduced in the specification PDF, identifies permitted material specifications including A36, A572, A913, A992, and HSS specifications such as A500 and A1085: AISC 360-22 material table.

International projects

Outside the US, the governing authority may adopt a different structural design system, national annex, seismic standard, execution standard, and steel designation. The design team should map the locally available material designation to the adopted design rules, including characteristic strengths, toughness requirements, welding provisions, product tolerances, inspection, and fire design. A nominally similar grade name is not proof of code equivalence. The engineer of record should document the accepted material standard and any conversion or substitution basis.

Compare like products before comparing grade names

Make a product-form schedule before asking mills or fabricators for alternatives. A wide-flange shape, HSS, plate, bar, and built-up member are governed by different product standards and availability. The following is a starting map from the AISC 360-22 material framework, not a final project specification.

Member or product form Specifications commonly appearing in the AISC comparison What to verify before selection
Hot-rolled wide-flange shapes A992; A913 is also listed for hot-rolled shapes Available shape sizes, required strength and stiffness, section compactness, connection design, seismic-system eligibility, mill certificates, and fabrication lead time.
Hollow structural sections A500 and A1085 Applicable grade within the specification, outside dimensions and wall thickness, corner geometry, local buckling, connection detailing, availability, and the specification edition accepted by the project.
Plates and other shape or plate contexts A36 and A572 are common comparison references Product-specific standard, thickness range, required strength, toughness, weldability, lamellar-tearing risk where relevant, connection demands, and supply in the required dimensions.
Higher-strength hot-rolled shapes A913 includes higher-strength grades subject to applicable design and seismic requirements Whether the selected grade is permitted for the member and force-resisting system, expected-strength implications, welding and detailing requirements, and a confirmed supply source.

Do not fill a comparison table with a guessed price or lead time. No grade-by-grade cost or availability ranking is established here; those values change with region, order quantity, section size, mill capacity, fabrication backlog, and project timing. Obtain current quotations and written engineering confirmation for the actual member list.

What the principal specifications mean in a project comparison

A992 for wide-flange framing

A992 is a relevant wide-flange comparison choice under the AISC building framework. Evaluate it against the actual beam and column sizes, connection details, stability calculations, and seismic-system requirements. A nominally suitable shape still has to meet strength, serviceability, fire, and fabrication criteria.

A913 for higher-strength hot-rolled shapes

A913 is listed for hot-rolled shapes and is available in higher-strength grades. Higher nominal strength can reduce member weight or permit a smaller section in some designs, but it can also alter connection forces, expected-strength calculations, welding procedures, ductility checks, and procurement options. Confirm that the selected grade is allowed for the applicable seismic force-resisting system and that the fabricator can source and qualify it.

A500 and A1085 for HSS

A500 and A1085 are relevant HSS material specifications in the AISC framework. Compare the complete specification and grade, not just the A500 or A1085 label. Wall thickness, outside dimensions, corner radius, local slenderness, connection configuration, and available lengths can control an HSS design. The engineer should also confirm whether the HSS specification and grade are eligible for the intended seismic system.

A36 and A572 for plates and other contexts

A36 and A572 commonly appear in comparisons for plate and other product contexts. Their suitability depends on the product standard, thickness, connection forces, required strength, toughness, welding, and the governing design provisions. A plate specification selected for a gusset, base plate, transfer element, or embedded component should be checked separately from the rolled shapes in the same building.

Build the loading brief before selecting material strength

Material selection is meaningful only after the design team has a loading brief. At minimum, document:

  • Building dead loads, including the structural frame, slabs, cladding, roofs, fire protection, and permanent services.
  • Equipment dead loads and concentrated reactions, with operating, maintenance, installation, and replacement conditions.
  • Live loads for occupied, storage, mechanical, electrical, roof, maintenance, and circulation areas.
  • Roof mechanical plant, suspended utilities, process systems, and future expansion allowances.
  • Construction-stage loads and routes for bringing large equipment into and out of the building.
  • Wind, snow, rain, ice, seismic, flood, tsunami, soil, and fire actions required by the adopted code and ASCE/SEI 7 edition.
  • Temperature, shrinkage, settlement, differential movement, and other effects that can influence sensitive equipment or long-span framing.

ASCE/SEI 7-22 covers the listed hazard categories and load combinations, but the project’s adopted code, site data, risk category, and amendments determine the values used in design. A stronger grade cannot compensate for an incomplete loading model.

Use a six-step grade-selection workflow

  1. Identify the jurisdiction and governing system. Record the authority having jurisdiction, adopted building-code edition, referenced ASCE/SEI 7 edition, risk category, fire requirements, and any owner standards. For a seismic project, identify the intended force-resisting system before screening materials.
  2. Freeze the loading and movement brief. Gather equipment schedules, support reactions, concentrated and distributed loads, roof plant, future replacement paths, construction loads, drift limits, settlement assumptions, and any vendor movement criteria. Mark loads that are still provisional rather than silently treating them as final.
  3. Classify each member by product form. Separate wide-flange shapes, HSS, plates, bars, built-up members, and proprietary or specialty components. Assign candidate specifications only within the relevant product category.
  4. Check strength, stiffness, and stability together. Evaluate axial, flexural, shear, combined actions, local and global buckling, unbraced length, lateral stability, connection behavior, and fire-design effects. Check serviceability at the same time; a lighter high-strength section may not provide the stiffness needed by equipment or finishes.
  5. Verify seismic and fabrication compliance. Where seismic force-resisting systems are used, check material eligibility, expected strengths, ductility, detailing, protected zones, connections, welding, inspection, and erection requirements under the applicable seismic provisions. Confirm the fabricator’s procedures and inspection capability before approving a substitution.
  6. Compare total project consequences. Obtain current mill and fabricator input on section availability, plate thicknesses, minimum order quantities, lead times, welding, inspection, coating, fire protection, transport, erection, and future maintenance. Compare lifecycle cost rather than material price alone, and document the engineer’s final basis of design.

Strength is only one design variable

Member stiffness and deflection

For equipment buildings, stiffness can control before nominal yield strength does. Beam and girder deflection, column shortening, frame drift, floor slope, differential movement, and support rotations can affect process tools, piping, cleanroom partitions, façade systems, and utility connections. A higher-strength grade does not automatically increase the elastic modulus; changing the grade may leave stiffness essentially governed by the selected geometry and span. If serviceability controls, a deeper or better-braced member may be more effective than a stronger material.

Stability and geometry

Long columns, transfer girders, open-web members, and unbraced beams can be governed by buckling, lateral-torsional stability, local slenderness, or connection flexibility. Compare complete member designs, not isolated yield strengths. A smaller high-strength section can have less radius of gyration, more slender elements, or tighter erection tolerances than a heavier conventional section.

Connections and expected forces

Changing grade changes the forces that connections may need to transmit and can affect bolt, weld, gusset, end-plate, flange, web, and continuity-plate design. In a seismic system, connection design must follow the system’s required inelastic mechanism and expected material strengths, not merely the nominal grade printed on a mill certificate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Seismic projects require a system check, not a grade shortcut

AISC 341-22 lists eligible material specifications for seismic force-resisting systems with limitations. Material eligibility alone does not prove that a member or frame complies. The project team must select the structural system, establish the intended ductile mechanism, design connections and protected zones, account for expected strengths, and satisfy detailing, welding, inspection, and quality-assurance provisions.

During early design, ask the engineer to identify which members are ordinary gravity framing and which participate in the seismic force-resisting system. A material substitution that is harmless in a gravity beam may be unacceptable in a special moment frame, braced frame, collector, diaphragm connection, or other protected component. Record the approved specification, grade, thickness limits, and substitution process in the project requirements.

Set vibration and deflection criteria with equipment stakeholders

Data centers and semiconductor facilities can contain rotating machinery, fans, pumps, chillers, generators, transformers, precision tools, and other sources of dynamic excitation. Floor framing that passes a static strength check can still transmit unacceptable motion. AISC’s summary of Section L4 states: “The effect of vibration on the comfort of the occupants and the function of the structure shall be considered.” See the AISC floor-vibration guidance.

There is no single universal vibration threshold established for every data center or semiconductor building. Obtain criteria from the owner, equipment vendors, process engineers, and commissioning team. Define the frequency range, acceleration or velocity limits, measurement locations, operating cases, acceptance method, and whether criteria apply during construction, normal operation, maintenance, or tool change-out. Coordinate these limits with structural analysis, mechanical equipment isolation, housekeeping pads, inertia bases, and utility supports.

The same AISC page reports that a Design Guide 11 study correctly predicted 74 of 76 floor bays with vibration complaints as unsatisfactory, a reported 97.4% result; the page does not state the study year. Treat that figure as AISC’s report of that study, not as a guarantee for a particular facility. It illustrates why a documented vibration assessment is preferable to choosing a stronger grade by intuition.

Account for corrosion, condensation, and maintenance exposure

Corrosion protection is an exposure decision. Identify indoor and outdoor zones, condensation, wash-down, chemicals, coastal salts, cooling-tower drift, process vapors, buried or embedded steel, coating damage during erection, inspection access, and the owner’s maintenance plan. Then select the coating, corrosion allowance, stainless or weathering option, drainage details, and inspection regime as appropriate.

Weathering steel should not be treated as a default indoor or semiconductor-facility frame material. ASTM’s A709/A709M summary describes specified weathering grades as having enhanced atmospheric corrosion resistance, but A709’s stated scope is bridge steel. Whether a weathering grade is appropriate depends on the actual exposure and the specification accepted for the building; sheltered, damp, chemically contaminated, or continuously wet conditions can defeat the assumptions behind atmospheric weathering.

Weldability, inspection, fire protection, and erection

Ask the fabricator and engineer to review welding and erection consequences for every candidate specification. Confirm qualified welding procedures, preheat and interpass controls where required, consumable compatibility, inspection methods, access, distortion control, repair rules, and the availability of certified personnel. Thick plates, restrained joints, highly loaded connections, and seismic components deserve particular attention.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Coordinate the steel grade with the fire-resistance design. Fire protection thickness, encasement, connection protection, penetrations, inspection, and repair can affect installed cost and schedule. A material that reduces steel tonnage may not reduce total cost if it complicates fireproofing, coating, shop handling, or field repairs.

Erection planning also belongs in the comparison. Check shipping length and weight, crane capacity, temporary bracing, field bolting and welding, tolerance accumulation, sequencing around equipment installation, and the ability to replace damaged or delayed members. A specification that is technically efficient but unavailable in the required size can become the project’s critical path.

Procurement and lifecycle cost: obtain project-specific evidence

There is no defensible universal ranking of these grades by price or availability. Mill capacity, regional distribution, shape size, plate thickness, order quantity, rolling schedule, freight, fabrication backlog, and inspection requirements change the result. Request written, current information from at least the structural engineer, steel service center or mill, fabricator, coating and fireproofing contractors, and equipment or process stakeholders.

Compare:

  • Material price and expected tonnage.
  • Shape, HSS, and plate availability in the exact sizes and thicknesses required.
  • Mill-test documentation, traceability, toughness data, and substitution procedures.
  • Shop detailing, welding, bolting, inspection, and nonconformance risk.
  • Coating, galvanizing where applicable, fire protection, touch-up, and maintenance.
  • Transportation, erection duration, temporary works, and schedule exposure.
  • Future alteration, replacement, corrosion maintenance, and decommissioning implications.

Use the result to select a documented basis of design and a controlled substitution process. Do not allow a field or procurement substitution to change a seismic, vibration, fire, or serviceability assumption without engineering review.

Two illustrative decision paths

Conventional data-center expansion

Suppose a project has a mostly gravity-load steel frame, moderate equipment concentrations, no confirmed special seismic system, and a regional fabricator with established access to standard wide-flange shapes and HSS. The team would first confirm the adopted code and ASCE/SEI 7 loads, then compare the available wide-flange and HSS specifications member by member. It would test deflection, vibration, column shortening, connection design, fire protection, and delivery dates before deciding whether a higher-strength option provides a real benefit. This path does not make any one grade universally preferable.

Semiconductor tool-support structure

Suppose a semiconductor project has precision tools with vendor movement limits, large mechanical systems, strict cleanroom coordination, and a designated seismic force-resisting system. The owner and vendors would issue measurable vibration and movement criteria before framing is frozen. The engineer would then verify AISC 341 material eligibility and detailing, model dynamic and serviceability behavior, coordinate isolation and support details, and obtain fabricator confirmation for the selected shapes, plates, welds, inspections, coatings, and fire protection. A high-strength grade would be considered only if it satisfies that complete chain of requirements.

Information to place in the project material schedule

A useful material schedule should be specific enough that procurement and inspection teams cannot mistake one product for another. Include:

  • Member mark, product form, shape or HSS designation, plate thickness, and quantity.
  • Material specification and grade, including the edition accepted by the project.
  • Whether the member is gravity framing, a collector, diaphragm component, or part of the seismic force-resisting system.
  • Design strength, serviceability, vibration, fire, corrosion, and toughness requirements that affect acceptance.
  • Required mill certificates, traceability, testing, inspection, and nonconformance disposition.
  • Approved alternates and the engineer’s required review before substitution.
  • Coating, fire-protection, handling, storage, and repair requirements.

Common comparison mistakes and how to correct them

Choosing the highest nominal strength

Problem: The team assumes the strongest grade is automatically the safest or most economical.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Correction: Compare complete members for stiffness, stability, connections, seismic detailing, fabrication, fire protection, and supply. Strength is one criterion among several.

Comparing A992, A500, and A36 as if they were interchangeable

Problem: The comparison ignores product form.

Correction: Separate wide-flange shapes, HSS, plates, and other products first, then compare specifications that actually apply to each member.

Designing vibration criteria after the frame is fixed

Problem: Tool or equipment limits arrive after spans, supports, and mechanical layouts are committed.

Correction: Obtain owner and vendor criteria during concept design and include operating equipment, isolation, utility supports, and replacement cases in the analysis.

Treating material eligibility as seismic compliance

Problem: A permitted grade is assumed to make the frame compliant.

Correction: Check the entire AISC 341 system: force-resisting-system selection, expected strengths, member and connection detailing, protected zones, welding, inspection, and quality assurance.

Using weathering steel without an exposure assessment

Problem: Atmospheric corrosion resistance is assumed to work in every indoor, damp, or chemically exposed area.

Correction: Document condensation, chemicals, wetting and drying, drainage, coatings, inspection access, and maintenance before selecting any corrosion strategy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Relying on an old availability assumption

Problem: A grade or section is specified from a previous project without checking current supply.

Correction: Ask the current mill, service center, and fabricator for written availability and lead-time information for the exact shapes, dimensions, and quantities.

A practical approval checklist

  • Has the authority having jurisdiction and adopted code edition been identified?
  • Has the applicable ASCE/SEI 7 edition and every local amendment been recorded?
  • Are dead, live, equipment, roof, construction, environmental, seismic, wind, and fire loads documented?
  • Is each member assigned to the correct product form and specification family?
  • Have strength, stiffness, buckling, connection, fire, vibration, drift, and settlement checks been completed?
  • Has the seismic force-resisting system been identified, with AISC 341 material and detailing checks where applicable?
  • Have owner and equipment-vendor vibration and movement criteria been written into the design basis?
  • Have exposure, condensation, chemicals, coatings, fire protection, inspection, and maintenance assumptions been coordinated?
  • Has the fabricator confirmed welding procedures, inspection capability, section availability, and lead time?
  • Is there a documented engineer-of-record review process for substitutions?

The final specification should be the result of this documented process, not a grade name selected in isolation.
