The best detour is not necessarily the shortest one or the route shown on a sign. Compare each candidate by expected door-to-door time, delay variability, capacity, access, safety, vehicle restrictions, information freshness and effects on surrounding communities. Then check the responsible transportation agency’s current construction notices and traffic conditions immediately before leaving. A route that works during one construction phase or time of day can become a poor choice after the next lane shift or closure.
Why distance alone produces bad detour choices
An interchange closure changes how traffic is distributed across an entire network. A two-mile-shorter alternative may funnel vehicles onto a crowded arterial, add several signalized turns or pass through a neighborhood with little spare capacity. Its map distance looks attractive, but its total trip can be slower and less predictable than a longer route that stays on a higher-capacity road.

Compare the complete trip from origin to destination, including the approach to the detour, every intersection and merge, and the final connection after the interchange. A useful comparison asks not only “How many miles?” but also:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- What is the expected travel time at the planned departure hour?
- How much can a queue, crash or blocked turn add to that time?
- How many lanes and usable approaches are available?
- Can your vehicle legally and physically use the route?
- Does the route create avoidable risk near workers, pedestrians, schools or hospitals?
- Is the information current for the project’s present construction stage?
Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) guidance treats these as transportation-management questions rather than a simple shortest-path exercise. For an individual driver, that means making a deliberate comparison with current local information instead of assuming the signed route is always the fastest route for every trip.

Collect current information before comparing routes
Identify the exact work zone and phase
Find the project’s official notice, construction page, changeable-message-sign information or signed detour description. Confirm which ramps, lanes and cross-streets are closed, when the closure applies, and whether work is continuous or limited to certain hours. A route may be open during daytime but restricted overnight, or available in one direction while the opposite direction is closed.
Construction staging matters because a temporary ramp, lane shift or bridge operation can change traffic patterns without changing the project’s name. Note the effective date of the notice and whether the agency announces a phase change, weekend closure, emergency repair or weather-related postponement.
Check live and near-term traffic conditions
Use the responsible state, regional or local transportation agency’s current traffic map, incident feed and project alerts. Check for crashes, disabled vehicles, special events, flooding, snow, bridge restrictions and adjacent construction. A detour that is acceptable in a normal midday period may fail during a commute, school arrival period or event exit.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDefine your trip and vehicle
Write down the origin, destination, departure window, required arrival time and whether the trip includes a stop, appointment or delivery. Record vehicle length, height, width, weight, number of axles, trailer configuration and turning needs. A route suitable for a passenger car may be illegal or impractical for a truck, bus, recreational vehicle or vehicle carrying an over-height load.
List every realistic candidate
Start with the signed detour, then identify alternatives that use different road facilities rather than merely joining the same queue farther upstream. Depending on the interchange, candidates may include:
- A signed route using the designated parallel highway or arterial.
- An earlier or later interchange that reconnects with the same destination corridor.
- A cross-town arterial with more signals but fewer freeway merges.
- A route that stays on a high-capacity road and accepts additional distance.
- A local-road option, only when its width, access, safety and community effects are appropriate.
- A transit, walking or cycling connection when the trip and local facilities make that practical.
Do not treat a navigation application’s first suggestion as a complete comparison. It may react to current speeds without knowing a vehicle-height restriction, a temporary permit requirement, a construction worker access point or a closure that has not yet propagated through its data. Use it to discover possibilities, then verify each route with official information and signs.
Use a consistent comparison framework
Put the same questions against every candidate. The weighting depends on the trip: a medical appointment may prioritize reliability, while a permitted heavy-haul movement may prioritize legal clearances and turning geometry.

| Criterion | What to examine | Warning signs |
|---|---|---|
| Door-to-door time | Approach, detour, intersections, merges and destination access at the departure time | A short distance with long queues or many signals |
| Reliability | Range of likely times, incident exposure, queue growth and recovery after a disruption | A single bottleneck with no practical backup |
| Capacity and congestion | Number of lanes, available shoulders, turning lanes, transit operations and existing demand | Traffic being diverted onto a road already near capacity |
| Access and complexity | Ramp geometry, signalized intersections, turns, merges, driveway activity and wayfinding | Multiple difficult turns or an unclear temporary pattern |
| Safety | Worker and pedestrian exposure, sight distance, grades, pavement, conflict points and incident response | Improvised maneuvers, narrow lanes or queues extending into a junction |
| Vehicle fit | Height, weight, width, axle, turning and hazardous-material restrictions | Low clearances, weight limits or a turn that requires opposing lanes |
| Community effects | Traffic through residences, businesses, schools, hospitals and transit stops | Cut-through traffic on streets not designed for it |
| Information freshness | Whether the source reflects the current construction stage and date | Old maps, conflicting signs or an expired closure notice |
Estimate total time, not just free-flow time
For each route, separate the time spent moving at normal speed from time likely to be lost in queues, signals, merges and incidents. A practical estimate has four parts:
- Approach time: travel from your origin to the first point where the construction-related diversion affects you.
- Detour running time: the time to cover the alternate road at the expected speed for that period.
- Control delay: waits at signals, stop signs, ramp meters, turns and lane merges.
- Uncertainty allowance: a realistic margin for queue growth, an incident or a temporary traffic-control change.
Do not add an arbitrary buffer and call the result precise. Instead, record a range such as “usually moderate, but highly variable when the queue reaches the upstream signal.” If you have historical observations for the same time period, use them; otherwise, treat an apparently exact application estimate as an estimate, not a guarantee.
FHWA work-zone performance measures include volume, travel time, queue length, delay, incidents, incident-response and clearance times, user costs and cumulative effects from adjacent projects. Those measures explain why a route with a lower free-flow time can perform worse once diverted traffic arrives.
Evaluate capacity and congestion exposure
Find the bottleneck
Mark the point on each candidate where demand is most likely to exceed available capacity: a one-lane bridge, a short merge, a signal with a restricted turn phase or a road narrowed by work. A route with several moderate delays can be more dependable than one route with a single severe bottleneck, because a small disruption at that bottleneck can create a long queue.

Traffic diverted from an interchange can interact with another work zone, an event venue, a school pickup line or a railroad crossing several miles away. Check adjacent construction and recurring congestion, not only the closure itself. When two projects overlap, the combined effect can be greater than either delay considered alone.
Account for direction and time
Congestion is often directional. A route that works for an outbound morning trip may be poor for the return trip in the afternoon. Compare the route in the direction and time you will actually drive, and repeat the check if your departure time is flexible.
Check access, turns and wayfinding
Count the decisions a driver must make. Each additional turn, temporary lane shift or merge creates another opportunity for a missed movement, sudden braking or conflict with pedestrians and cyclists. Verify that every required ramp or cross-street is open in the direction of travel. Temporary signs can direct traffic differently from a familiar pre-construction pattern.

Vehicle restrictions
Check posted and agency-published limits for height, weight, width, axle loads, length, hazardous materials and turning movements. Include temporary restrictions created by construction barriers, shifted lanes or reduced shoulder width. A legal route on the permanent map may not be usable during a work phase.
Road and work-zone conditions
Assess pavement condition, grades, sight distance, lane width, nighttime lighting, pedestrian crossings and the number of conflict points. Give extra weight to routes with active worker access, frequent lane changes or queues that could block an intersection. Slow down, obey temporary speed limits and merge instructions, and expect traffic patterns to change.
Emergency and service access
Consider whether the route permits emergency vehicles, fuel, rest areas and safe places to stop if a problem occurs. FHWA’s alternate-route factors include availability of services and accommodation for transit. A route with no practical stopping point may be unsuitable for a long commercial movement even if its travel time looks favorable.
Include effects on nearby communities
A detour shifts costs as well as traffic. Additional vehicles can delay residents, interfere with deliveries, increase noise and make crossings harder near schools, hospitals and businesses. FHWA describes detour analysis as including extra travel time, extra-distance costs, improvements needed on the detour and effects on communities and local businesses.
For a personal trip, this does not mean you must calculate an economic impact study. It does mean avoiding unnecessary neighborhood cut-throughs when a safe, signed, higher-capacity route is available. For a business or agency choosing a public detour, review whether the road can handle the traffic, whether access to shops and homes will remain open and whether transit stops need temporary accommodation.
Verify that the information is fresh enough
Construction plans are not static. FHWA advises planners to review and revise plans before each construction stage. Apply that principle to every departure: recheck official notices after a phase change, before a weekend closure, after severe weather and whenever you see signs that conflict with your previous route.

Give priority to sources in this order:
- The current traffic-control signs and instructions at the work zone.
- The responsible transportation agency’s dated project notice and closure alert.
- Current incident and congestion information from the agency or local authority.
- Recent observations from a reliable traveler or dispatcher who drove the route in the same period.
- Older maps and general navigation data, used only as background.
If sources disagree, do not assume the older route is still valid. Follow lawful temporary signs and contact the responsible agency or project information line when a restriction affects a permitted or commercial movement.

- Define the trip. Record origin, destination, departure and arrival windows, direction, stops and vehicle dimensions.
- Locate the active restriction. Identify the closed ramp, lane, bridge or connection and the construction stage that causes it.
- Collect current notices. Check dated agency information, signed detours, incident reports and adjacent projects.
- List at least two viable alternatives. Include the official detour and a route using a different potential bottleneck when one exists.
- Screen for legality and fit. Remove any route with a height, weight, width, turning, hazardous-material or access restriction that applies to your vehicle.
- Trace each route end to end. Note merges, signals, grades, crossings, queue locations, service gaps and the final connection to the destination.
- Estimate a time range. Include approach time, running time, control delay and a route-specific uncertainty allowance.
- Rate reliability and safety. Favor a route that remains usable if traffic increases modestly, rather than one that succeeds only under perfect conditions.
- Consider community and access effects. Avoid unnecessary cut-through traffic and confirm that businesses, homes, schools and hospitals retain access.
- Recheck just before departure. Look for a new closure, crash, queue or phase change, then follow temporary signs and revise the choice if conditions changed.
How the comparison changes for agencies and project teams
Drivers generally need a current, safe and legal choice; they do not need to build a traffic model. Agencies and contractors making a formal traffic-management decision have a broader obligation to test alternatives against project constraints, staging, work-zone type and anticipated impacts.
Recommended Free Tools
FHWA modeling guidance describes comparing construction stages and phasing, work times, lane closures, diversions and mitigation strategies. Typical sketch-planning inputs include route length, free-flow speed, project duration, closure times and traffic volumes on primary and alternate routes. A project analysis can also examine queues, delay, incidents, response and clearance, user costs and cumulative impacts from nearby work.
For Federal-aid highway projects, FHWA’s Work Zone Safety and Mobility Rule requires a transportation management plan. That requirement applies to project planning, not to an ordinary driver deciding how to reach a destination. The driver-facing result should nevertheless be visible in clear signs, maintained access and current public information.
Common comparison mistakes and their fixes
Choosing the shortest mapped route
Why it fails: distance ignores queueing, signal delay, capacity and incident exposure.
Fix: compare door-to-door time and variability at the actual departure period.
Assuming the signed detour is always fastest
Why it fails: the signed route is designed to provide a controlled, legal movement, but it may not minimize time for every origin, destination or vehicle.

Departure checklist
- Origin, destination, departure time and required arrival time are defined.
- Vehicle height, weight, width, length and turning needs are known.
- The active interchange closure and construction phase are confirmed.
- The signed detour and at least one other viable route have been traced.
- Current queues, incidents, weather and adjacent projects have been checked.
- Every route is legal for the vehicle and open in the direction of travel.
- Signal delay, merge points, queue locations and uncertainty are considered.
- Schools, hospitals, businesses, residences and transit access are not being bypassed unnecessarily.
- Temporary signs and work-zone personnel will take precedence over an older plan.
- The route will be checked again if the departure is delayed or the construction phase changes.
Bottom line
Compare alternate routes as complete operating choices, not lines on a map. Start with the official detour, test other legal options against current traffic, capacity, access, safety, vehicle restrictions and community effects, and choose the route whose expected time and reliability fit your trip. Because interchange construction changes by phase, verify the decision immediately before departure and be prepared to switch when current signs or agency information show that conditions have changed.
