Choose the route that is legally open for your vehicle or travel mode, can physically and safely carry the traffic, has acceptable current delay, and remains clearly signed to your destination. The responsible road authority’s latest notice and temporary signs take priority over a generic map estimate.
Use the comparison method below before leaving, then check for changed restrictions or incidents close to departure. It helps you decide without assuming that the shortest line on a map is the quickest or safest way around a bridge closure.

What counts as a detour and what counts as an alternate route?
Terminology is not consistent between jurisdictions. Missouri Department of Transportation engineering guidance describes a detour as a temporary rerouting onto an existing highway around a temporary traffic-control zone. A diversion may instead use a temporary highway or alignment. Local notices may use either word differently, so the traffic-control plan and signs for your project control the meaning. See MoDOT’s temporary traffic-control guidance.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
For a traveler, the practical distinction is this:
- Signed temporary detour: the route selected and signed by the road authority to take traffic around the works.
- Alternate route: another publicly available route you identify, which may be longer, less familiar, or subject to different restrictions and congestion.
An alternate route is not automatically an illegal shortcut, but it may fail a height, weight, width, access, turning, or traffic-management requirement. Treat the signed route as the baseline, then test any alternative against the same checks.

Read the current bridge-work notice before comparing roads
Bridge projects change in phases. A route open during daytime may close overnight; a lane arrangement may change after a weekend possession; and a restriction for heavy vehicles may apply even when cars can cross. Start with the road authority’s project page, travel-alert service, or on-site notice for the date and direction of travel.
Record these facts before looking at map times:
- Which bridge, carriageway, or approach is closed or restricted.
- The current work phase and the hours when the restriction applies.
- Whether the notice specifies an official detour, a diversion, or a prohibited road.
- Any temporary weight, height, width, axle, hazardous-load, toll, or access restriction.
- Arrangements for pedestrians, cyclists, buses, emergency services, deliveries, and local residents.
- The authority’s latest incident, queue, travel-time, or signal information.
For example, National Highways’ A38 Willington Bridge maintenance information shows why project-specific restrictions and travel alerts matter. Do not substitute an old article, an archived social-media post, or a normal-day map route for the current instruction.
First filter: is each route permitted and suitable?
Remove a route from consideration if it is not open now or does not accommodate the person, vehicle, or load making the trip. A car route cannot be assumed suitable for a high-sided van, articulated lorry, abnormal load, wheelchair user, or cyclist.

Check the posted and project-notice limits for gross weight, axle weight, height, width, length, turning radius, and hazardous materials. A route can appear connected on a map yet contain a low bridge, a narrow bend, a weight-restricted village road, or a junction where a long vehicle cannot turn. If a restriction is unclear, ask the authority or operator before departure rather than relying on a navigation app’s vehicle profile.
Walking and cycling access
Pedestrians and cyclists may have a separate crossing, a temporary path, or no passage at all. A motor-traffic detour that adds several miles may be irrelevant if a signed footway or cycleway remains available; conversely, a road that is fine for cars may be unsafe or prohibited for active travel. The Southampton Itchen Bridge maintenance FAQ illustrates the principle by describing different arrangements for cars, large vehicles, walking, and cycling on one project. Use those arrangements as a project-specific example, not as a rule for every bridge.
Public transport, emergency access, and deliveries
Buses may be diverted through designated stops or may face timetable changes. Emergency access can be controlled separately, and a delivery route may need a permit or a time window. Confirm the mode-specific instruction before comparing journey times; an apparently faster road is not useful if your trip cannot legally use it.
Compare the physical route, not just the map distance
MoDOT’s detour-selection guidance identifies pavement condition, capacity, geometry, existing traffic, and facility type as evaluation considerations. Apply the same screen to both the signed detour and your proposed alternate.

Pavement and roadside condition
Look for load limits, weak shoulders, temporary plates, standing water, loose surfaces, steep grades, and work vehicles entering the road. A route that is acceptable for a light car may be unsuitable for a loaded truck or a cyclist. Poor pavement can also reduce speed and increase breakdown risk, turning a short route into a long delay.
Geometry and conflict points
Assess lane width, sight distance, junction spacing, roundabouts, sharp bends, steep ramps, and available turning areas. Count the difficult movements rather than judging the route by its straight-line distance. A route with many side-road entries, school crossings, or single-lane sections can have greater delay variability than a longer, higher-standard road.
Facility type and continuity
Identify whether the route uses a motorway or freeway, a divided arterial, a two-lane rural road, or local streets. Facility type affects speed, overtaking, incident recovery, and the ability of traffic to merge. Confirm that the route rejoins the intended corridor at a useful point; a shortcut that ends at a restricted junction may simply move the problem downstream.
Test capacity and traffic conditions
A detour must carry its normal users plus traffic displaced by the bridge. An alternate route may look empty in a route planner because the planner has not yet reflected a closure, or it may already be saturated by commuters, school traffic, or a separate incident.
Ask the following:
- How many lanes or usable road spaces remain during the work phase?
- Are signals being retimed, lanes metered, or temporary merges introduced?
- Does the route pass through a town centre with queues at several closely spaced junctions?
- Are there current crash, weather, event, or maintenance alerts?
- Can a stalled vehicle or minor collision block the whole route?
Iowa DOT’s guidance on bridge-repair work zones lists mobility and safety measures such as monitoring and incident response. Its examples show why capacity management can matter as much as the nominal number of lanes. Read Iowa DOT’s mobility and safety mitigations guidance for the types of controls an agency may use; the measures on your project will depend on its design and jurisdiction.
Estimate travel time as a range, not a single number
Normal map travel time is only a starting point. Bridge works introduce queues, temporary signals, lane changes, merging, and incident-related variability. Compare the likely range and the consequences of being late, not just the fastest displayed estimate.
Use the latest authority information
Some projects monitor traffic and publish delay or travel-time information. Florida Department of Transportation’s Jupiter bridge-closure information describes monitoring and travel-time management for that project. It is an example of project-specific practice, not evidence that every detour has a predictable delay. Check FDOT’s bridge-closure information near departure and allow additional time.

Account for variability
Write down a best case, a normal congested case, and a disruption case for each route using the authority’s current information and your knowledge of the travel period. Do not invent a percentage delay when no official figure exists. A route that is five minutes shorter in free flow but has a single vulnerable junction may be a worse choice for an appointment than a longer route with several ways to recover.
Consider the full door-to-door trip
Include the time to reach the detour entrance, find the correct temporary lane, stop at a changed bus stop, park, or walk around a closure. A motorway detour that bypasses the bridge may still be slower if its approach is congested. For cyclists and pedestrians, surface quality, crossings, gradients, and waiting at controlled junctions can matter more than vehicle distance.
Check signs and navigation continuity
Official temporary signs are the authoritative route through a live work zone. MoDOT guidance calls for clear signing over the detour length and a return to the original route. UK Department for Transport guidance explains the sign conventions used for road works and temporary situations; see Signs for road works and temporary situations.
Before setting off, verify that your chosen alternate has:
- A clear entrance from your direction of travel.
- Advance warning of restrictions and lane changes.
- Enough signs at every decision point, not merely at the bridge approach.
- A clear connection back to your destination road.
- A plan for what to do if a sign closes the route after you have entered it.
If a navigation app conflicts with a temporary sign, follow the sign and reassess safely at the next permitted stopping point. Never make a sudden turn, reverse, or illegal U-turn to recover a missed instruction. Download or note the authority’s map or diversion description in case mobile coverage fails.

| Comparison axis | Questions for the signed detour | Questions for an alternate route | Decision rule |
|---|---|---|---|
| Permission and restrictions | Is it open in the current work phase, and does the notice allow your vehicle or mode? | Is every road open and suitable for your dimensions, load, and access needs? | Reject any route that is prohibited or unsuitable. |
| Physical suitability | Are pavement, lane width, bends, grades, and junctions adequate for diverted traffic? | Can the road carry your vehicle safely without low bridges, weak structures, or difficult turns? | Prefer the route with adequate geometry and condition, not merely the shorter distance. |
| Capacity and traffic | What queues, signal changes, incidents, or monitoring updates apply? | What traffic already uses it, and how would closure traffic affect it? | Use current conditions and variability, not a normal-day estimate. |
| Journey time | What current range is indicated, including the queue to reach the detour? | What is the likely range at your travel time and destination approach? | Choose the route that meets your time requirement with the more dependable range. |
| Signs and continuity | Is it signed throughout and does it return to the intended road? | Can you follow it without entering a restricted or unsigned work area? | Keep the official signed route unless the alternate is clearly legal, safe, and understandable. |
| Mode and access | Does it provide the required pedestrian, cycle, bus, emergency, or heavy-vehicle provision? | Does it provide the same access without an unmarked gap? | Match the route to the actual traveler and vehicle, not to a generic car profile. |
Use this five-step decision sequence
- Identify the live conditions. Read the current bridge-work notice for work phase, closure hours, restrictions, signed routing, and updates.
- Filter by legality and mode. Remove routes that cannot carry your vehicle, load, mobility needs, bicycle, or pedestrian journey.
- Screen design and capacity. Compare pavement, geometry, facility type, existing traffic, junctions, and the ability to handle diverted demand.
- Check time close to departure. Use the authority’s latest delay or travel-time information, then allow extra time for queues and uncertainty.
- Follow signs and reassess. Enter the selected route only where permitted, follow temporary signs, and change plans if the authority changes a restriction or an incident blocks the route.
This sequence synthesizes engineering and public guidance from MoDOT, Southampton City Council, Iowa DOT, Florida DOT, the UK Department for Transport, and National Highways. It is a practical method, not a quoted legal standard.
How the choice changes by traveler and vehicle
Private car
For a normal car, the decisive factors are usually current queue length, signal delay, safe lane changes, and whether the route returns to the correct side of the bridge. Do not assume a residential shortcut is acceptable: local access restrictions, narrow lanes, and parked vehicles can make it slower and less safe.

Van, truck, or abnormal load
Check height, width, weight, axle, turning, and hazardous-load provisions before considering time. Obtain any required permit or operator instruction. A route that saves distance but requires a prohibited movement is not an alternative.
Pedestrian or cyclist
Follow the project’s designated crossing or temporary path. Compare surface, lighting, gradients, crossings, and separation from traffic. If no safe connection is identified, contact the authority rather than walking or cycling on a motor-traffic-only detour.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to do when conditions change en route
Bridge work is a moving traffic-control environment. If signs, police instructions, or an authority alert change the route, comply at the next safe decision point. Do not stop in a live lane to reprogram a device.
- Pull into a legal, safe stopping place before checking updates.
- Record the new restriction, closure time, or incident location.
- Reapply the permission, suitability, capacity, and time checks to the remaining options.
- Tell a dispatcher, customer, or person meeting you if the revised route affects the arrival window.
- Keep emergency access clear and never enter a signed road closure.
When an authority is actively managing signals or monitoring traffic, its updates can become more reliable than an earlier route estimate. A route that was reasonable at departure may no longer be the responsible choice after a work phase or incident changes.
Common mistakes and their fixes
Choosing the shortest distance
Problem: Distance ignores queueing, road capacity, turns, restrictions, and mode access. Fix: Compare the complete route against the physical and capacity checks before looking at minutes.
Treating a car route as universal
Problem: A low bridge, narrow lane, or missing footway can invalidate the route for another vehicle or traveler. Fix: Start with the actual dimensions, load, mobility requirements, and travel mode.

Using an old diversion map
Problem: Work phases and closure hours change. Fix: Check the current authority notice and signs on the day of travel.
Assuming an app knows the work zone
Problem: Consumer routing data can lag temporary signs or misread a restricted road. Fix: Treat the official traffic-control instruction as controlling and use the app only as a secondary aid.
Ignoring the return leg
Problem: A route open in one direction or time window may be different on the way back. Fix: Check both directions, planned return time, and any overnight or weekend phase.

Examples of evidence that must stay project-specific
Florida DOT project material for the Jupiter bridge describes a planned “20-month full bridge closure.” That duration belongs to that specific project and should not be treated as a general bridge-work benchmark or a prediction for another closure. See the project’s FAQ for its own details.
Likewise, a Southampton access arrangement for large vehicles, cars, walking, and cycling cannot establish what another authority will provide. These examples demonstrate why the bridge name, jurisdiction, direction, vehicle, mode, and travel date are necessary before anyone can rank two real routes.
When a generic article cannot tell you which route is faster
No cross-project statistic establishes a typical time penalty or safety ranking for temporary detours versus alternate routes. Without two named routes and live conditions, it is not responsible to declare one faster. The result depends on the work phase, traffic demand, signal plan, incidents, weather, vehicle restrictions, and the traveler’s mode.
If you need a project-specific answer, gather the bridge authority’s current notice, the two route descriptions, your direction and departure time, vehicle dimensions or accessibility needs, and any fixed arrival deadline. Then apply the filters and table above. If the authority has not published enough information to establish safe access, ask it directly rather than guessing.
