Use it sparingly on a soft, barely damp cloth, test a hidden area first, and follow the footwear maker’s care instructions. The right approach depends on the shoe’s material; this method is not established for floors, clothing, or every household surface.
Before cleaning, identify the footwear material
Check the care label or the manufacturer’s instructions before applying any solution. Smooth leather, suede, nubuck, and rubber or other boot materials can need different care. If the finish is treated, delicate, valuable, or uncertain, ask the maker or a cobbler rather than assuming vinegar is suitable.

Prompt, gentle cleaning is sensible for leather: The Vinegar Institute says salt can damage leather and advises against letting stains build up. Floris van Bommel notes that salt stains can come from winter road salt as well as perspiration.

Clean smooth leather with a diluted solution
- Spot-test first. Dampen a hidden area, such as the tongue, with the solution you plan to use. Let it dry and check for a change in color or finish before treating the visible stain.
- Dilute white vinegar. Guidance differs: The Vinegar Institute recommends equal parts water and white vinegar, while Floris van Bommel specifies two parts water to one part white vinegar. Neither ratio is established as right for every leather finish, so follow the shoe maker’s directions where available.
- Dab the marks. Use a clean, soft cloth that is damp rather than soaking wet. Work gently over the salt marks; do not saturate the leather or scrub aggressively.
- Blot and air-dry. Blot away excess moisture, then let the footwear dry at room temperature, away from radiators and other direct heat.
- Apply suitable aftercare. Once dry, use conditioner, polish, or protection only if it is appropriate for that leather and recommended by the maker.
Take extra care with suede and nubuck
Do not automatically use smooth-leather instructions on suede or nubuck. Angelus Direct describes one part distilled white vinegar to two parts lukewarm water, applied with a barely damp cloth, followed by complete room-temperature drying and brushing the dry nap. Clarks’ general shoe-care guidance instead recommends a dedicated foaming cleaner for suede and nubuck. These differing recommendations are a reason to check the footwear maker’s instructions and spot-test first.

If the maker approves a damp-cloth treatment, keep the cloth barely damp, avoid rubbing hard, and let the shoe dry fully at room temperature before gently brushing the nap. Do not apply conditioner, polish, or protector unless the product is suitable for that specific material.
For rubber and other boot materials, follow material-specific care
Clarks separates its care guidance for leather, suede or nubuck, and rubber or winter boots. Check the instructions for your boot’s material instead of assuming a vinegar solution intended for leather is appropriate. For a purpose-made option, Tarrago describes De Salter as a soapy solution for white marks caused by water, snow, or salt on several shoe materials; check its product directions for suitability before use.
