Brush dried dirt, erase light scuffs, absorb fresh oil with powder, freeze gum or wax, and use only products labeled for suede or nubuck. No method removes every stain, and aggressive cleaning can permanently damage the nap.
Before you clean suede
Suede is leather made from the underside of an animal hide. Its raised, porous nap absorbs moisture and stains more readily than smooth leather, so the safest method is controlled and stain-specific: identify the material, start dry, use the least aggressive compatible treatment, let the footwear dry slowly, then restore the nap.

- Confirm the material. Check whether the footwear is real suede, nubuck, faux suede, sheepskin, or a coated or technical boot. Waterproof coatings, Gore-Tex uppers, and membranes may require special care. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions whenever they are available.
- Remove laces and insoles when practical. If the boots are muddy, let the mud dry completely before brushing it away.
- Patch-test first. Test every cleaner, vinegar solution, conditioner, and protector inside the shaft, beneath a pull tab, or in another hidden area. Suede colors and finishes vary, and some protectors temporarily darken the material.
- Gather the right tools: a clean suede or nubuck brush, suede eraser, clean cloth, plain unprinted paper or a shoe tree, and—if needed—a cleaner specifically labeled for suede or nubuck.
How to clean suede: 7 stain-busting ideas
1. Dry-brush mud, soil, and everyday dirt
Let wet mud dry before touching it. Then brush away loose dirt with a clean suede brush, working with the nap and using light strokes. Brushing after every few wears helps prevent dirt, water spots, and salt from building up.
Do not wet muddy suede first. Water can turn loose soil into a deeper smear. If dry brushing does not remove the remaining mark, move to a suede-specific cleaner rather than household detergent.
2. Erase dry scuffs and surface marks
Use a clean suede eraser, art-gum eraser, or suede eraser bar with light, controlled pressure. Work only on the mark, then brush the area to lift and realign the nap.

Stop if the surface begins to look shiny, dull, thin, or noticeably different from the surrounding suede. Deep ink and embedded marks may require more pressure, but aggressive erasing can damage finished suede and leave a larger patch than the original stain.
3. Even out water marks instead of making a new ring
A small, heavily saturated circle often dries into a more obvious water ring. For a water spot, lightly dampen the affected panel—or the area around the mark—with room-temperature water. Gently work the moisture through the nap, blot away excess, and let the footwear dry naturally.

Avoid newspaper and other inked paper because the ink can run into the damp suede.
4. Lift road salt with a cautious vinegar solution
When the footwear is completely dry, brush away loose salt. For a persistent salt deposit or water-soluble mark, blot—not scrub—with a cloth dipped in a suede cleaner or a diluted white-vinegar solution. A cautious starting mixture is two parts water to one part white vinegar. Wipe the area again with a separate cloth lightly dampened with plain water to remove residue.
Vinegar is not universally safe for suede and may alter its color. Patch-test first, use very little liquid, and stop immediately if the color changes. For valuable, pale, or unusually finished footwear, a suede-specific cleaner or professional treatment is the safer choice.

Blot fresh oil gently with a dry cloth or paper towel. Do not rub, and do not add water first: water can spread oil deeper into the nap.

Cover the stain with cornstarch or talcum powder and leave it for several hours or overnight. Brush away the powder and repeat once if necessary. Old or persistent grease may need a cleaner designed for oil-based stains or professional treatment, and complete removal is not guaranteed.
6. Freeze gum or wax before removing it
For chewing gum or candle wax, harden the material with a controlled cold treatment. You can place the footwear in a freezer or apply a targeted cold source until the residue is solid. Carefully peel or scrape it away without digging into the nap.
Keep the treatment targeted and avoid adding water. Do not use heat to melt gum or wax into the fibers. Direct heat is also unsafe for drying suede.
7. Use a dedicated cleaner—or escalate
For a deeper clean, choose a product explicitly labeled for suede or nubuck and follow its instructions. Depending on the product, the process may involve spraying cleaner over the upper, gently working it with a damp sponge or cloth, wiping away excess with clean water, and allowing the boot to dry naturally.

Use only a small amount and avoid getting the suede too wet. Some manufacturers recommend cleaning the entire upper rather than treating one isolated spot because a localized treatment can create a color difference. Follow the footwear maker’s product and care directions when they differ from general advice.
Escalate instead of repeatedly experimenting at home when the stain involves ink, an unknown chemical, dye transfer, a large area, old oil, or a mark that remains after one gentle, material-specific attempt. Professional help is especially sensible for expensive boots, unusual finishes, and footwear with waterproof membranes.
Drying suede shoes and restoring the nap
After any damp treatment, blot rather than wring. Place the footwear in a cool, well-ventilated area away from radiators, hair dryers, heaters, fireplaces, direct sunlight, and other strong heat. Let it dry slowly.
Use clean paper or a shoe tree to retain the shape while it dries. Do not use inked newspaper. Once the footwear is completely dry, brush gently in one direction or with the nap to restore its soft, even texture. Excessive brushing and hard scrubbing can abrade suede fibers.

Apply a suede or nubuck protector only when the footwear is clean and completely dry. Patch-test first, spray evenly according to the label, and observe the stated drying time. Some products instruct you to wet the surface without soaking it and to allow at least 24 hours of drying time.
Protection reduces exposure to moisture and dirt, but it is not a guarantee against stains. A protector may also darken suede temporarily or slightly, which is why testing an inconspicuous area matters.

What not to do
- Do not machine-wash, soak, or dunk suede as a general cleaning solution.
- Do not use wax or smooth-leather polish on suede or nubuck. Wax can damage the nap and cause staining.
- Do not use a hair dryer, radiator, heater, or strong sunlight to speed drying. Heat can shrink, distort, or damage suede.
- Do not apply untested detergent, harsh chemicals, or wet wipes. They can discolor the fibers or leave shiny patches.
- Do not over-brush or aggressively erase once the nap or color begins to change.
- Do not keep escalating household remedies when the likely finish damage exceeds the likely cleaning benefit.
Choosing a suede cleaning kit
A suede cleaning kit is a practical starting point because many kits combine a suede brush, eraser, cloth, cleaner, scrub brush, or protector. Treat a kit as a convenience, not a guarantee.
Before buying, check that the label explicitly names suede or nubuck, read the application instructions, and confirm that the product is suitable for the footwear’s finish. A suede brush, suede eraser, suede-specific cleaner, and protector spray are useful supporting products. Generic sneaker cleaner, wax, smooth-leather polish, and untested household chemicals are not interchangeable with them.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do you clean mud off suede boots?
Let mud dry completely, then brush it away with a clean suede or nubuck brush. Do not wet muddy suede first, because moisture can turn loose soil into a deeper smear.
What removes oil from suede shoes?
Blot fresh oil without rubbing, cover it with cornstarch or talcum powder for several hours or overnight, then brush it away. Do not add water first.
How do you remove water marks from suede?
Lightly dampen the affected panel or surrounding area with room-temperature water, blot excess, stuff the footwear with clean unprinted paper or use a shoe tree, and let it dry naturally.
Can you use vinegar to clean suede?
Yes, but patch-test first. A cautious mixture is two parts water to one part white vinegar, applied by blotting rather than scrubbing. Vinegar can change suede color, so stop if discoloration appears.
The Bottom Line
For most suede shoes and boots, the safest sequence is: let dirt dry, brush first, identify the stain, use a targeted low-moisture treatment, dry naturally, restore the nap, and protect only when fully dry. If color or texture starts changing, stop—suede cannot always be restored after aggressive cleaning.
