To clean a couch without setting a stain, creating a water ring, shrinking a cover or damaging the weave, start with the sofa’s care code and the manufacturer’s instructions—not the fiber name alone. Find the tag, identify whether it says W, S, SW/WS or X, then use only the method that code and the maker permit. Cotton, linen, velvet, microfiber, polyester, rayon, wool blends and similar labels are clues; the code and model-specific directions control the decision.
Why the care tag matters more than the fabric name
Two sofas made with a similar-looking fiber can have different backings, finishes, dyes or construction. Their manufacturers may therefore allow different cleaning chemistry. Ashley Furniture says the care label is commonly found beneath a seat cushion or under the sofa. Bernhardt Furniture Company and La-Z-Boy likewise direct owners to the upholstery code and product instructions.

Do not choose a cleaner solely because a sofa is described as linen, velvet, microfiber, cotton, polyester, rayon or wool blend. Use this sequence instead:

- Record the exact code and any model-specific wording.
- Check the maker’s instructions for that sofa, especially any warning about steam, extraction, solvents or laundering.

If the tag is missing or unreadable, the safe answer is not to guess from the hand or appearance of the material. Look up the exact model or contact the seller or manufacturer before applying liquid or solvent.

What the upholstery codes mean
| Code | Permitted approach in the cited manufacturer guidance | Important limits |
|---|---|---|
W |
Spot-clean with a water-based upholstery shampoo or foam. Blot spills promptly and use minimal moisture. | Do not use solvents. La-Z-Boy and Bernhardt caution against steam or hot-water extraction in their W directions. |
S |
Spot-clean with a water-free dry-cleaning solvent made for furniture upholstery. | Do not use water or saturate the fabric. Consult a professional for extensive soil. |
SW, WS or W-S |
Depending on the maker, an upholstery shampoo, mild-detergent foam or suitable dry-cleaning solvent may be allowed. | The code does not make every method safe. Bernhardt says steam and hot-water extraction are not recommended for its SW upholstery. |
X |
Vacuum or lightly brush with a nonmetallic brush. | Do not apply water- or solvent-based cleaners. Ask the maker or a professional about stains or overall soiling. |
The wording on the tag and the sofa maker’s instructions take precedence if they are more restrictive than this general code guide.
Cleaning “by fabric type” without making a risky assumption
Cotton, linen and rayon
These fiber names do not establish whether water or solvent is acceptable. Read the code, then follow the corresponding procedure. A water-based foam that is suitable for one model is not automatically suitable for another model made with the same fiber.
Polyester and microfiber
These materials are also governed by the sofa’s code. Do not assume that a synthetic fiber tolerates a general-purpose spray, steam or a wet extraction machine. Use only a method expressly allowed for that upholstery.

Use the same code-first process. A wool blend should not be treated with a solvent, water or heat merely because a particular recipe is popular online.
Velvet, chenille and other pile or nap fabrics
After an approved cleaning method has dried, the pile may need gentle brushing to restore its appearance. Use a nonmetallic soft or stiff-bristle brush only when the maker’s directions permit it. Brushing is for dust removal or nap restoration, not aggressive scrubbing.

Leather and faux leather
Leather is not fabric upholstery for purposes of these codes. Use the leather section of the sofa maker’s instructions. Faux leather may have its own care directions as well; do not transfer a fabric recipe to it.
A safe sequence for an approved spot-cleaning method
Once the code permits a particular chemistry, use a controlled process. The goal is to remove the mark without spreading moisture or creating a visible difference between panels.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Remove dry debris. Vacuum with an upholstery attachment or use a gentle, nonmetallic brush. Lift grit before introducing any cleaner.
- Blot a fresh spill. Press with a clean absorbent cloth to lift liquid. Do not rub, which can work the spill deeper or disturb the surface.
- Prepare only the permitted product. For
W, use the water-based shampoo or foam specified by the maker. ForS, use a furniture dry-cleaning solvent. ForSW/WS, select only an option listed in the exact instructions. Never substitute a water product for a solvent-only code. - Pretest in a hidden place. Apply the smallest practical amount, then let the area dry. Check for color change, texture change, tide marks or a disturbed nap before treating a visible panel.
- Use minimal moisture or solvent. Work on the mark rather than saturating the cushion. Follow the product label and sofa instructions for application and blotting.
- Blend the treatment area as directed. Several manufacturer instructions advise cleaning evenly across a panel or from seam to seam instead of making one tiny isolated wet spot. This reduces the chance of a visible difference between the treated area and surrounding fabric.
- Allow complete drying. Leave the upholstery undisturbed until it is fully dry according to the product and furniture instructions. Do not sit on a damp area or add another chemical while it is drying.
- Restore the surface if appropriate. On a permitted pile or nap fabric, use a nonmetallic brush gently in the direction specified by the maker.
These steps describe process control, not a universal stain recipe. The actual cleaner, dilution, dwell time and application technique must come from the product label and the sofa manufacturer.
How to clean each code safely
W: water-based cleaning only
A W tag permits a water-based upholstery shampoo or foam in the cited La-Z-Boy, Bernhardt and Ashley guidance. Vacuum first, blot spills, pretest the product and use as little moisture as will address the spot. Do not switch to a solvent because the stain is stubborn. La-Z-Boy and Bernhardt specifically caution against steam and hot-water extraction in their W directions, so a portable extractor or steam machine is not an automatic upgrade.
S: water-free solvent only
Use a dry-cleaning solvent intended for furniture upholstery, not a household solvent chosen by trial and error. Pretest on a hidden section, blot rather than rub, and avoid saturation. Water can leave damage on an S-coded fabric even when the spill itself was water. For broad or deeply soiled areas, stop DIY treatment and arrange professional upholstery cleaning.

SW, WS or W-S: more than one class, not every method
These labels can allow a water-based shampoo, mild-detergent foam or an appropriate dry-cleaning solvent, but the permitted choice depends on the maker. Read the sofa-specific directions before selecting one. Bernhardt’s instructions are a useful warning: its SW upholstery does not have steam or hot-water extraction approval. Treat the code as a range of possible methods, not as permission to combine them or to use heat.

X: dry maintenance only
Bernhardt’s Code X instruction states: “Clean only by vacuuming or light brushing with a non–metallic, soft bristle brush. DO NOT USE ANY WATER OR SOLVENT BASED CLEANER.” Use an upholstery attachment to remove dust and a suitable nonmetallic brush for light surface soil. Do not spot-test a liquid on X upholstery; the code already rules out water- and solvent-based cleaners. Ask the maker or a professional about a significant stain or overall soiling.
Can you steam-clean or hot-water-extract a sofa?
Only when the exact sofa instructions expressly allow that process. The cited manufacturer directions do not treat steam as universally safe: La-Z-Boy and Bernhardt caution against steam or hot-water extraction for their W directions, and Bernhardt says those methods are not recommended for its SW upholstery. Steam also introduces water, so it is incompatible with an S or X instruction that prohibits water-based treatment.
If a rental machine, service advertisement or cleaning video recommends steam for all sofas, set that advice aside until it agrees with your tag and maker instructions. When the instructions are silent or contradictory, contact the manufacturer or use a professional cleaner who can identify the upholstery before choosing equipment.
Removable cushion and slipcovers: a zipper is not a washing instruction
A cover that comes off the cushion is not automatically machine washable. Ashley lists hand-wash and machine-wash categories for certain products, while Bernhardt warns that some slipcovers may shrink and directs owners to the fabric cleaning code.

Before laundering a removable cover:
- Find the cover’s own laundering label, not just the sofa’s upholstery code.
- Check the model-specific instructions for water temperature, cycle, detergent and drying method if those details are provided.
- Confirm that every related piece—seat covers, backs, arm covers and matching panels—has compatible instructions.
- Do not wash a cover simply because it unzips. If the label is missing, ask the maker or a professional cleaner first.
If washing is permitted, follow the label exactly and do not improvise a hotter cycle or aggressive drying method. A cover that shrinks may no longer fit even if the fabric looks clean.
Leather requires a separate method
Do not apply a fabric-code recipe to leather. Bernhardt recommends routine dusting or vacuuming with an upholstery attachment. For soil or stains, its instructions call for a lightly dampened cloth with a mild, non-detergent soap solution, gentle wiping without rubbing and natural drying. The same guidance warns against furniture polish, saddle soap, oils, varnishes, ammonia water, soaps and dusting agents outside the specified method.
La-Z-Boy gives a different example: promptly blot spills, use mild soap with distilled water on a slightly damp cloth or sponge, avoid excessive rubbing, blot away residue and use a professional leather-cleaning service for difficult stains. Because these instructions differ, the leather maker’s directions for your sofa control.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Dry maintenance that is safe for many upholstery codes
Routine dry care removes dust before it becomes embedded and is the primary maintenance approach for X-coded upholstery. It is also a useful first step for W, S and SW/WS sofas before any permitted spot treatment.
- Use an upholstery vacuum attachment rather than a bare, abrasive floor head.
- Move slowly over seats, backs, arms and crevices so loose debris is lifted.
- Use a soft or stiff-bristle nonmetallic brush only where the maker permits brushing.
- On pile or nap fabric, brush gently after approved cleaning to return the surface to an even appearance.
- Blot new spills promptly; delaying increases the chance that soil will spread or set.
Dry maintenance is not a substitute for a prohibited wet or solvent treatment. It is the correct endpoint for X upholstery and the preparation step for other codes.

When a professional cleaner is the better choice
Call a professional upholstery cleaner when the sofa is overall soiled, the stain covers a large area, the care code is missing, the fabric is delicate or the manufacturer directs you to professional service. Bernhardt recommends an IICRC Certified Firm specializing in upholstery cleaning for overall soil. La-Z-Boy recommends a professional furniture-cleaning service for an overall-soiled condition and a professional leather cleaner for difficult leather stains.
Ask the service to identify the code and explain the proposed chemistry and equipment before work begins. A professional should be willing to respect an X restriction, decline an unsafe process and discuss the risk of color or texture change. Professional help is especially sensible when a failed DIY attempt could affect an entire matching suite.
What to do when the tag is missing
There is no universally safe fallback cleaner for unidentified upholstery in the cited guidance. Do not infer a code from a fabric’s feel, sheen, weave or color. Instead:

Choosing tools and products without overstepping the code
| Item | Appropriate use | Boundary |
|---|---|---|
| Upholstery vacuum attachment | Routine dry maintenance for any sofa where vacuuming is permitted, including X-coded fabric. | It does not remove every stain or authorize wet cleaning. |
| Soft nonmetallic upholstery brush | Dust removal or gentle nap restoration when the maker allows brushing. | Do not scrub aggressively or use a metal brush. |
| Water-based shampoo or foam | Only for upholstery whose instructions permit water-based cleaning, commonly a W code. | Do not use on S or X upholstery, and do not assume SW/WS approval without the maker’s directions. |
| Furniture dry-cleaning solvent | Spot treatment for an S code, or for SW/WS upholstery when the exact instructions allow it. | Pretest, avoid saturation and never use on X upholstery. |
| Professional upholstery service | Overall soil, extensive staining, uncertain codes or high-risk fabrics; an IICRC Certified Firm specializing in upholstery is a strong choice. | Provide the code and maker’s restrictions before treatment. |
Common mistakes that damage upholstery
- Choosing by fiber name alone: cotton, linen, microfiber, velvet and polyester labels do not replace the care code.
- Using water on an S code: S means a water-free furniture solvent in the cited guidance.
- Using solvent on a W code: W directions call for water-based shampoo or foam and caution against solvents.
- Treating SW/WS as unlimited: the code allows more than one class of cleaner, but maker-specific restrictions still apply.
- Steaming by default: steam and hot-water extraction are specifically not recommended in the cited W and Bernhardt SW directions.
- Applying liquid to X upholstery: X is dry maintenance only in the cited instructions.
- Rubbing a spill: blotting is the recommended first response; rubbing can drive soil deeper and disturb the surface.
- Creating a tiny wet island: several manufacturer directions advise cleaning evenly across a panel or seam to seam to reduce visible differences.
- Skipping the hidden-area test: color and texture changes may appear only after the test dries.
- Washing a zippered cover automatically: removable does not mean machine washable, and some slipcovers can shrink.
- Using fabric products on leather: leather has separate instructions and different prohibited products.
A quick decision checklist
- Have you found the tag under a cushion or beneath the sofa?
- Did you read the exact maker’s instructions for this model?
- Does the selected product match the code: water, solvent, either as specifically allowed, or neither?
- Have you ruled out steam and hot-water extraction when the instructions caution against them?
- Did you vacuum or gently brush away dry debris first?
- Did you blot instead of rub?
- Did you pretest and let the test dry?
- Are you using minimal product and treating an appropriate panel or seam-to-seam area?
- Will the upholstery dry fully before use?
- Should an unclear code, large stain, overall soil or leather problem go to a professional?
Sources for the code and care guidance
The code definitions and procedures above follow the upholstery-care instructions published by Bernhardt Furniture Company, La-Z-Boy and Ashley Furniture Industries. Their pages differ in detail, which is why the sofa’s own label and model instructions remain the controlling authority.
