1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsClean a mesh facade by first identifying its metal, finish, fixings and backing wall, then using the least aggressive method approved for that assembly. In many compatible systems, the safe sequence is to remove loose dirt, wash with clean water and a mild compatible detergent using a soft brush or cloth, rinse thoroughly and let the mesh dry. Work-at-height controls, runoff management and inspection of the fixings are as important as the washing itself.
There is no universal cleaner or interval for every architectural mesh. Stainless cable mesh, woven wire, expanded metal, aluminum and coated panels can react differently to chemicals, abrasion, salt and pollution. Treat the installed product and its maintenance manual—not a generic rule—as the controlling instruction.

What a mesh facade actually consists of
“Mesh facade” describes an assembly, not a single material. A screen may be stainless cable, woven stainless wire, aluminum, expanded metal or another alloy. It may also have a powder-coated, painted, anodized, printed or otherwise decorative finish. The mesh can be tensioned, framed, clipped or bolted, with a masonry, concrete, glass or insulated backup wall behind it.
Cleaning decisions must account for every layer. A detergent that is acceptable on bare stainless steel may stain an anodized aluminum surface or attack a coating. Water that appears harmless at the front can carry loosened grime through the openings and mark the wall, insulation, windows or equipment behind the screen. Fixings can corrode or loosen even when the visible mesh still looks sound.

- Exposure: coastal salt, road spray, industrial pollution, dust, biological growth and frequent hand contact.
Find the installed product and maintenance instructions
Start with the handover file, product data sheet, shop drawings and maintenance manual. The product name and finish specification are usually more reliable than visual identification from the ground. Suppliers such as Carl Stahl Architektur, SGORIA, MAISHI, GKD and Haver & Boecker publish guidance for particular mesh constructions; their instructions apply to the products and finishes they specify, not automatically to every facade.
If the documents are missing, ask the facade contractor, architect or manufacturer to identify a small sample or provide the approved cleaning method. Do not begin with a strong chemical simply because the deposit looks difficult. Unknown coatings and printed surfaces are especially vulnerable to irreversible dulling, color change or adhesion loss.
Inspect and plan before water reaches the facade
Check the mesh, supports and anchors
Walk the accessible areas and inspect from several angles. Look for broken or slack strands, bent panels, damaged coating, corrosion, loose clips, displaced bolts, cracked sealant, blocked gaps and debris caught between the screen and backup wall. A stain may be evidence of corrosion or water movement rather than a surface-cleaning problem.

Record the location and have the facade contractor or another competent specialist assess it. Cleaning can add wind load, water pressure and movement to a component that is already unsafe.
Control water, detergent and falling debris
Determine where rinse water will drain. Open mesh can pass water and loosened dirt onto windows, entrances, balconies, air intakes, landscaping and sensitive equipment. Protect or isolate those areas, keep people out of the drop zone and prevent contaminated water from entering drains where local rules prohibit it.
Plan the work for weather that will not force detergent or salt to dry on the surface. Wind can carry spray onto pedestrians or adjacent property and can make telescopic poles, ladders and suspended equipment unstable. The building’s approved access plan and local regulations take precedence over a generic cleaning procedure.

| Method | Where it can fit | Main controls and limitations |
|---|---|---|
| Dry dusting or low-pressure air | Loose dust on protected or lightly soiled mesh where water is undesirable | Use a soft tool and control airborne dust; do not abrade the finish or blow debris into occupied areas and vents. |
| Low-pressure water rinse | Compatible exterior metal with light deposits | Manage runoff and avoid forcing water behind flashings, seals, electrical equipment or the backup wall. |
| Soft brush or cloth with mild detergent | Established deposits on a finish confirmed to tolerate the detergent | Use the product maker’s dilution and contact time, work gently and rinse before residue dries. |
| Water-fed pole and soft facade brush | Accessible elevations where ground-based cleaning is approved | Confirm brush compatibility, operator training, water supply, overspray control and safe working distance. Stated pole reach is not a safety guarantee. |
| Suspended or specialist access | High, recessed or obstructed areas that cannot be reached safely from the ground | Requires designed anchors, approved equipment, rescue planning, exclusion zones and competent operators. |
Water-fed systems may use purified water and a surface-appropriate brush. UNGER describes its nLite telescopic system as reaching up to 20 m; that is the manufacturer’s capability claim for its equipment, not a general safe working height or proof that every mesh facade can be cleaned from the ground.
Step-by-step cleaning procedure
- Confirm the work permit and exclusion zone. Isolate entrances, walkways and equipment below the facade. Install barriers and warning signs, and assign a person to monitor the area where falling water or debris could reach people.
- Verify the approved cleaner. Check the maintenance manual for the exact metal and finish. If the finish is uncertain, stop and obtain written confirmation from the supplier or facade contractor. Never improvise a chemical mixture.
- Remove loose dirt without scraping. Use a soft brush, microfiber cloth or another approved tool. Lift grit away rather than grinding it across the surface. Do not use steel wool, hard scrapers or abrasive pads on visible mesh.
- Pre-rinse when the product instructions allow it. A gentle rinse can remove loose salts and dust before washing. Keep pressure and spray direction within the system manufacturer’s limits, and shield vulnerable openings and equipment behind the screen.
- Apply mild detergent sparingly. For compatible stainless mesh, one manufacturer guide specifies warm water and a mild chloride-free detergent applied with a soft brush or cloth. This is an example of product guidance, not a universal recipe. Work in small sections from the top down so dirty solution does not run over cleaned areas.
- Agitate lightly. Follow the approved dwell time and use only the pressure needed to release the deposit. Stop if the coating changes color, becomes tacky, sheds pigment or shows a new mark.
- Rinse completely with clean water. Remove all detergent, loosened salt and soil before they dry. Pay attention to overlaps, cable intersections, frames, clips and horizontal ledges where residue collects.
- Allow the assembly to dry and inspect it. Architectural-fabric guidance from GKD emphasizes thorough rinsing and drying. Check the surface in daylight, then inspect the fixings and the area behind the mesh for trapped debris, streaks or water entry.
- Document defects and the completed work. Photograph representative areas, note the cleaner and tools used, record weather and access equipment, and list any repair or follow-up inspection required.
Material and finish-specific precautions
Stainless cable and woven wire
Stainless mesh is corrosion-resistant, not corrosion-proof. Chlorides from coastal air, de-icing salts, cleaning products or contaminated rinse water can leave deposits and initiate staining. Use the specified mild, chloride-free detergent where the product guide calls for one, rinse thoroughly and avoid contact with carbon-steel tools that can transfer rust particles.
Cable intersections, ferrules, tensioners and perimeter fittings deserve as much attention as the wire. Do not bend strands with a brush or use washing pressure to “test” tension. Any broken cable, sharp protrusion or loose termination requires specialist attention.
Aluminum, anodized and expanded metal
Aluminum can discolor when exposed to unsuitable acids, strong alkalis, chlorinated products or abrasive action. Anodized and expanded-metal surfaces may show directional marks if scrubbed aggressively. Use only the cleaner and brush approved for the specified finish, test as directed by the supplier and rinse before the solution dries.
Painted, powder-coated and printed finishes
A coating can be damaged without obvious peeling. Solvents, bleach, acids, strong alkaline cleaners and abrasive pads can reduce gloss, change color or undermine adhesion. Do not assume a product safe for bare metal is safe for a decorative finish. If a stronger cleaner appears necessary, obtain compatibility confirmation and follow the supplier’s test procedure on an inconspicuous area.

Frames, fixings and the backing wall
Inspect clips, bolts, tensioners, rails and anchors for corrosion, movement and missing parts. Check the backup wall for staining, algae, blocked drainage paths and damage caused by trapped moisture. Cleaning the mesh while leaving a blocked cavity or corroding fixing untouched only hides the underlying maintenance issue.
Tools and chemicals to avoid
- Steel wool, abrasive pads, hard scrapers and wire brushes on visible mesh.
- Chlorine, bleach, acids, strong alkalis and solvents unless the finish supplier expressly confirms compatibility.
- Uncontrolled high-pressure jets that drive water behind seals or deform thin panels.
- Unlabelled mixtures, incompatible detergents or products decanted without safety information.
- Leaving detergent, salt or dirty water to dry on the surface.
- Using a ladder, roof edge or anchor that has not been approved for the building and task.
How often should a mesh facade be cleaned?
There is no defensible industry-wide interval. SGORIA states that frequency depends on exposure, finish, location and touch level; GKD likewise relates it to environmental conditions and the owner’s aesthetic standard. A protected interior screen may need occasional dust removal, while a coastal or traffic-facing elevation may require frequent inspection and prompt salt or soot removal.
| Exposure or use | Practical scheduling approach |
|---|---|
| Interior or sheltered screen with little contact | Inspect during routine building rounds and clean when dust or visible deposits affect appearance or ventilation. |
| Urban facade exposed to traffic dust and pollution | Inspect more often during the first year, then adjust the interval to the rate at which deposits return. |
| Coastal, de-icing-salt or industrial exposure | Use closer inspections for chloride and corrosive deposits; clean before residues remain on the finish for extended periods. |
| High-touch areas, entrances and public screens | Set a response standard for fingerprints, food, hand oils and vandalism rather than relying on a calendar alone. |
Use inspection findings, finish condition and owner expectations to revise the schedule. Codina Architectural gives one product-specific example: its steel mesh cladding may be washed with neutral soap and water, and its fastening hardware should be checked visually every two years. That two-year check is Codina’s guidance for its system, not a universal requirement for all mesh facades.
Safe access and work-at-height controls
Ground-based poles
A telescopic pole can reduce the need to climb, but it does not remove risk. Confirm that the pole, brush, hose and water supply are suitable for the facade geometry, wind conditions and operator. Keep the pole clear of electrical lines, glazing and people, and control the hose so it cannot become a trip hazard. Actual reach depends on equipment configuration, angle, brush load and site conditions.
Suspended access and anchors
High or recessed screens may require suspended platforms, rope access or designed facade-maintenance equipment. JOMY summarizes EN 1808 as covering safety requirements, tests, markings and information for suspended access equipment, including support systems and building fixings. The standard summary is not a substitute for the current standard, local regulations, a competent assessment or the building’s approved access plan.
Before use, verify anchor certification, equipment inspection, rescue arrangements, exclusion zones, weather limits and communication. Never attach equipment to an apparently convenient rail, frame or mesh support unless the building’s design documentation approves it.

Stop-work conditions
Stop and obtain specialist help when panels or anchors move, the finish is unknown, access equipment is not clearly approved, wind makes the operation unstable, or runoff could affect people, property or sensitive equipment. A clean facade is not a successful outcome if the process injures someone or damages the building.

White or chalky residue remains
Possible causes include dried detergent, mineral-rich water or coating breakdown. Do not scrub harder. Recheck the approved rinse method and ask the finish supplier whether the mark is removable or evidence of damage.
Rust-colored streaks appear after cleaning
The source may be contaminated tools, corroding fixings, embedded particles or runoff from another metal component. Trace the water path, inspect the fastener and correct the source before attempting another wash.
The mesh looks clean but the wall behind is stained
Inspect the cavity, drainage paths, flashings and backup wall. Open mesh can transfer dirt and water; cleaning the front alone cannot correct a blocked or defective assembly.
A coating becomes dull, soft or discolored
Stop using the product, rinse only if the finish instructions permit it, photograph the area and contact the coating or facade supplier. Further agitation can make the damage permanent.
Keep a maintenance record
For each cleaning, record the date, elevation, weather, mesh and finish identification, approved detergent, dilution, tools, access method, water source, defects found and photographs before and after. Note areas not reached and any repair recommendation. These records show whether the interval is appropriate and help prevent an incompatible chemical or brush from being reused by a later contractor.

Review the record after the first one or two cycles. If deposits return quickly, investigate the source—salt spray, leaking details, exhaust or construction dust—rather than simply increasing chemical strength. If the finish remains stable and clean for long periods, the owner may be able to reduce washing while retaining regular inspections.
When to use a facade specialist
- The mesh material, coating or fixing system cannot be identified.
- There are loose strands, damaged panels, corroded anchors, missing fasteners or water-ingress signs.
- The facade requires suspended access, rope access or work near live services.
- Runoff could reach public routes, neighboring property, glazing, ventilation or sensitive equipment.
- A previous cleaner caused staining, gloss loss, coating failure or corrosion.
- The building’s maintenance manual requires a proprietary process or inspection by the installing contractor.
The safest maintenance plan is therefore specific: identify the assembly, inspect before washing, select a supplier-approved gentle method, control access and runoff, rinse and dry completely, then document the condition of the mesh, fixings and backing wall. That approach protects both the appearance and the components that keep the screen secure.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use household bleach on architectural mesh?
Not unless the finish supplier expressly confirms that bleach is compatible. Chlorine, bleach, acids, strong alkalis and solvents can damage metal or coatings, so use only the approved cleaner and dilution.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Is a water-fed pole safe for every mesh facade?
No. A pole’s stated reach, including the up-to-20-m claim for one telescopic system, does not establish safe use at every building. Access, wind, geometry, brush compatibility, runoff and operator controls must be assessed for the actual site.
What should I do if I cannot identify the mesh finish?
Do not start with a strong cleaner. Obtain the handover documents or ask the facade contractor or finish supplier to identify the material and provide an approved cleaning method.
