How to Clean a Fireplace and Chimney Before Burning Season

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before the first wood fire of fall, arrange a professional inspection of the complete appliance, chimney and venting system. Have it swept when the inspection finds enough creosote, debris or another condition that requires cleaning. A clean-looking firebox or a pass with a chimney brush cannot confirm that the flue is intact, open and safe.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says fire officials recommend professional inspection every year, while its fireplace guidance says flues and chimneys should be inspected before each heating season. The Chimney Safety Institute of America (CSIA) likewise recommends a professional inspection before seasonal use. Use the steps below to prepare the hearth, select a qualified sweep and know when to stop using the fireplace.

What to do before the first fire

  1. Let everything cool completely. Do not remove ash or handle the damper while embers or hot coals remain.
  2. Book a professional inspection. Ask for the wood-burning appliance, chimney and vent to be examined together, not just a quick look inside the firebox.
  3. Ask whether sweeping is needed. Cleaning is based on the chimney’s actual condition. Request an explanation of any creosote measurement, debris, blockage, cracks or other damage.
  4. Correct defects before burning. Do not use the fireplace if the flue is blocked, the masonry is cracked, smoke enters the room or the professional identifies a condition that can expose the house to heat or combustion products.
  5. Prepare safe fuel and airflow. Burn dry, seasoned wood, keep the air supply open and never overload a wood stove or fireplace.

These steps address two different jobs: inspection establishes whether the system is safe and serviceable; cleaning removes deposits or obstructions when the inspection says it is necessary.

Inspection and cleaning are not the same service

Service What it answers When to arrange it What it cannot prove by itself
Professional inspection Whether accessible parts of the appliance, chimney and vent are open, intact and operating as intended; whether cracks, blockage or creosote are present. At least annually, and before each heating season according to EPA fireplace guidance and CSIA seasonal advice. An inspection does not automatically mean the chimney has been swept.
Chimney sweeping Whether deposits and debris identified during inspection have been removed. When the condition of the flue requires it. CSIA’s Level One procedure says a dirty chimney requires sweeping and says to sweep or recommend sweeping at buildup of 1/8 inch or greater. Sweeping does not repair cracked liners, damaged masonry, leaking joints or other defects.
Firebox cleanup Removal of cooled ash and loose material from the hearth area. After the fire and ash have cooled fully. A tidy firebox does not show whether the chimney is blocked or structurally sound.

The 1/8-inch figure is a criterion in CSIA’s professional Level One procedure, revised in 2019. It is not a national statistic, a guarantee for every chimney or a substitute for a qualified assessment of your flue.

Why a pre-season inspection matters

Ask yourself the EPA’s question, How often should I have my chimney inspected and cleaned? The answer has two parts. Inspection is the recurring safety check: fire officials cited by EPA recommend professional inspection of the wood-burning appliance, chimney and vent every year, and EPA fireplace guidance calls for inspection before each heating season for leakage and blockage. Cleaning is conditional: sweep when deposits or debris make it necessary.

A professional can identify problems that a homeowner looking upward from the firebox may miss, including a restricted flue, a crack that allows smoke into the home, damaged chimney components exposed to high heat, or creosote hidden in an inaccessible section. The inspection should cover the system as a whole because the appliance, connector, chimney and vent work together.

What the professional checks in a Level One inspection

For a system continuing in ordinary use without known changes, CSIA’s Level One procedure is the routine inspection and cleaning level. It is professional guidance, and local building and fire codes can impose different requirements. The sweep generally examines accessible portions of the appliance and chimney, checks whether the flue is blocked and determines whether it is clean enough to operate.

Accessible condition and blockage

The inspection looks for visible damage, obstructions and deposits in the portions that can be reached safely. The professional may need to examine the termination, connector and appliance interfaces as well as the firebox. If an area cannot be assessed from the available access points, ask what remains unverified.

Creosote buildup

CSIA’s procedure states, If the chimney is dirty it will require sweeping. It also identifies 1/8 inch or greater buildup as the point at which the sweep should clean or recommend cleaning. The provider should explain where that buildup occurs and whether it is loose, glazed or otherwise difficult to remove.

Brushes and internal cameras

A brush may be sent through the system in some cases, including flues with offsets. A camera may be needed when the interior cannot be evaluated adequately by direct viewing. The appropriate method depends on the flue’s material, dimensions, geometry and condition; there is no single brush or rod setup that fits every chimney.

How to prepare for the appointment

  1. Stop using the fireplace early enough for it to cool. Tell the provider when it was last used and whether any embers may remain.
  2. Record symptoms. Note smoke entering the room, unusual odors, poor draft, visible staining, falling debris, animals or nesting material, and any changes made to the appliance or chimney.
  3. Clear access. Move furniture, decorations and combustible items away from the hearth and provide a clear route to the appliance, clean-out doors and roof or attic access if those are required.
  4. Gather appliance information. Have the make and model, installation paperwork and prior inspection or repair reports available. Tell the sweep whether the appliance burns wood, pellets or another fuel; the guidance here is for wood-burning systems.
  5. Ask for a defined scope. Confirm that the quote states whether it includes inspection, sweeping, documentation, camera work and a written description of defects.
  6. Plan for repairs. If the inspection finds a crack, blockage or damaged liner, keep the appliance out of service until the qualified professional explains the remedy and confirms it is ready to use.

Safe firebox and hearth cleanup

Remove ash only when it is cold

Wait until the firebox and ash are completely cool. Ash can retain heat long after flames disappear. Keep the damper open until the ashes have cooled, then shovel them gently to avoid stirring dust.

Use a covered metal container

Place ash in a closed metal container and keep that container away from the house until the contents are fully cool. Do not use a cardboard box, plastic bin or an open bucket. Keep the container on a noncombustible surface and away from decks, porches, wood piles and other combustible materials.

Keep the hearth clear

Remove newspapers, rugs, baskets, decorations and stored firewood from the immediate hearth area. A screen can help contain sparks during a fire, but it does not replace inspection, a sound flue or safe operating practices.

When sweeping is needed

Ask the professional to show or describe the deposit that requires removal. Creosote forms when wood-combustion byproducts condense on cooler chimney walls. EPA identifies restricted air, unseasoned wood, a cooler chimney and overloading a wood stove as conditions that can promote buildup. Sufficient accumulation can ignite and cause a chimney fire.

Do not treat a visual estimate from the room as a reliable measurement. Deposits can be hidden above the visible firebox, and a flue can be obstructed by debris or nesting material without obvious signs at the hearth. The professional’s condition assessment determines whether sweeping is needed and whether additional inspection is appropriate.

Do not assume a brush is a universal solution

CSIA’s procedure mentions chimney brushes, but it is written for chimney-sweep professionals. Different flue materials, offsets, liners and deposit types require different tools and methods. A brush that is too large can damage a liner; one that is too small can leave deposits behind. Before buying or using rods and a brush, confirm the flue dimensions and material and obtain instructions from a qualified professional. The available guidance does not establish a single homeowner cleaning sequence for every fireplace.

What creosote is and why it is dangerous

The EPA FAQ asks, What is creosote, and why is it bad? Creosote is made of wood-combustion byproducts that condense on cooler chimney walls. As the layer grows, it can restrict the flue and provide combustible material inside the chimney. A chimney fire can result when enough deposit ignites.

Burning wet wood, limiting air, operating with a cool chimney or overloading a wood stove encourages condensation and buildup. These practices also reduce combustion quality. The safest response to known buildup is to stop using the appliance until the chimney has been assessed and, if required, swept.

If you smell smoke or see cracks

Smoke odor indoors is a stop-use warning, not a cleaning reminder. EPA advises shutting down the appliance, opening a window, ensuring the flue is open, carefully checking the venting system and calling a professional. Do not continue adding wood to see whether the odor clears.

Cracks can allow smoke into the home or expose chimney components to damaging heat. A homeowner can report what is visible, but should not treat a visual check as a diagnosis. Keep the appliance out of service until a qualified professional determines the cause and confirms the repair.

How to choose and brief a local sweep

EPA identifies CSIA’s certified sweep finder and National Fireplace Institute (NFI) credentials as resources for checking professional qualifications. Credentials are one screening step; they do not eliminate the need to ask what the visit includes.

  • Does the appointment include the appliance, chimney and vent, rather than only the firebox?
  • Which inspection level is proposed, and why is it appropriate for this system?
  • Will the provider document deposits, blockage, cracks and areas that were inaccessible?
  • What measurement or observation led to the recommendation to sweep?
  • Will a camera or other method be used if the flue has offsets or cannot be viewed directly?
  • How will identified damage or blockage be handled, and will the appliance remain out of service until corrected?
  • Will you receive a written report, photographs or maintenance recommendations?

Local code differences apply. If the sweep identifies a code issue, liner problem or structural defect, obtain the required repair or permit guidance for your jurisdiction rather than assuming a routine cleaning resolves it.

Preventing buildup after service

Burn properly seasoned wood

EPA says firewood moisture below 20 percent is best. Split wood and allow it to season under cover with good airflow; do not rely on appearance alone to judge dryness. Wet wood produces more smoke and promotes condensation.

Provide adequate air

Do not choke the appliance down to prolong a fire, and do not operate with the flue or air controls restricted contrary to the appliance instructions. Restricted airflow contributes to the conditions that promote creosote.

Do not overload a wood stove

Load only the amount specified by the appliance manufacturer. Overloading can raise heat in ways that damage components and also contributes to poor combustion and deposit formation.

Keep records

Save the inspection date, provider’s findings, sweeping date, photographs and any repair documentation. Record unusual smoke, odor or draft problems between visits so the next professional has a useful operating history.

A practical seasonal schedule

Timing Action Reason
After the final fire of the previous season Remove cooled ash, close or secure the appliance as instructed, and note any smoke, draft or masonry concerns. Problems are easier to describe when the symptoms are still fresh.
Before the first fire Arrange professional inspection of the appliance, chimney and vent; complete required sweeping or repairs. EPA and CSIA seasonal guidance calls for a pre-use check, and defects should be corrected before heat and smoke are introduced.
During the season Burn wood below 20 percent moisture, maintain adequate airflow and avoid overloading. Watch for smoke indoors, unusual odors, falling debris or worsening draft. These practices reduce conditions that encourage creosote and provide early warning of a problem.
Immediately when a warning appears Stop using the appliance. For indoor smoke, open a window, confirm the flue is open, inspect only what can be checked safely and call a professional. Smoke leakage, blockage and cracks require diagnosis, not continued operation.

Can you clean it yourself?

You can safely perform the limited hearth tasks described above: allow ash to cool, transfer it to a covered metal container and keep combustible materials away. Full chimney sweeping is different. The professional procedure reviewed here is intended for chimney sweeps, and the correct method depends on flue type, access, geometry and deposit condition. A homeowner brush alone cannot verify structural integrity, clear every obstruction or determine whether hidden sections are safe.

If you are considering any do-it-yourself sweeping, first have a qualified professional identify the flue material, dimensions, access points and hazards and provide type-specific instructions. Stop immediately if the tool binds, masonry or liner material is damaged, debris falls unexpectedly or smoke enters the home. Arrange a professional inspection even if a DIY cleaning appears to remove visible soot.
