Choose a screwdriver bit by matching the screw’s drive profile first, then select the largest size that seats fully and snugly. Keep the bit unworn, hold the driver in line with the screw, and apply steady downward pressure while turning. Those steps prevent the most common causes of stripped recesses: a mismatched profile, an undersized or oversized bit, a damaged tip, weak pressure, and an angled driver.
This guide explains how to identify common drive systems, check fit, select a bit set for varied construction work, and stop safely when a screw begins to slip.

Why the right bit matters
A screwdriver bit transfers turning force through the recess in a screw head. If the bit’s shape does not match that recess, contact is limited to a few edges instead of the full intended geometry. The bit can then slip, deform the recess, or both. Once the recess is damaged, even the correct bit may no longer seat securely.

Visual similarity is not enough. Phillips and Pozidriv are separate drive systems, and JIS (Japanese Industrial Standard) screws can look like Phillips screws while using different geometry. The Phillips Screw Company’s drive-system listing also distinguishes profiles such as Torq-Set and Tri-Wing. Treat the recess in front of you—not a general resemblance—as the specification.

iFixit’s “Choosing the Right Screwdriver Bit,” updated August 11, 2026, and its “Screwdriver Best Practices,” updated February 18, 2025, both emphasize matching profile and size, inspecting bit condition, maintaining alignment, and using controlled pressure.
Identify the screw’s drive profile
Phillips (PH)
A Phillips recess is cross-shaped. Phillips markings commonly pair the profile abbreviation with a number, such as PH2, PH1, PH0, PH00, or PH000. The number identifies a size within the Phillips family; it does not make a Phillips bit suitable for every other cross-shaped recess.
iFixit explains that Phillips screws are designed to cam out under excessive torque. Cam-out is the bit riding upward and out of the recess while turning. It can be an intentional characteristic of the drive, but repeated slipping still damages both bit and screw, so it is a signal to stop and reassess fit, pressure, and alignment.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →JIS (Japanese Industrial Standard)
JIS recesses can appear similar to Phillips at a glance, but the geometry and cam-out behavior differ. iFixit says JIS screws do not provide the same cam-out option and that PH and JIS bits are not always interchangeable. If the fastener is identified as JIS, use a JIS bit rather than assuming a Phillips bit is close enough.
Pozidriv (PZ)
Pozidriv is a distinct cross-drive system. A Phillips bit may enter a Pozidriv recess, yet that does not make it the correct match. When the head is marked PZ, select the corresponding Pozidriv size and verify that the bit fills the recess rather than contacting only the center.

Torx, slotted, Tri-Wing, hex, and other profiles
Torx uses a six-lobed star-shaped recess; slotted screws use a single straight slot; Tri-Wing uses a three-wing pattern; and hex screws use a six-sided internal recess. Each requires its corresponding driver shape. The Phillips Screw Company’s “Drive Systems” page lists multiple named systems, illustrating why a single cross-head bit should not be treated as universal.
These visual descriptions are identification aids, not a dimensional standard. If the screw or fastener manufacturer specifies a driver, follow that specification. The available guidance does not establish a universal screw-gauge-to-bit-size chart.

After identifying the profile, choose the size that engages the recess across its depth and width. iFixit recommends choosing the largest driver that fits snugly and comparing the next size up and down when uncertain.
- Insert the candidate bit without turning. It should enter the recess fully rather than stopping at the opening.
- Check side-to-side movement. A properly sized bit has minimal play. If it rocks or rattles, it is probably too small or the profile is wrong.
- Compare adjacent sizes. Try the next larger and next smaller bit by hand. Keep the one that reaches full depth while gripping the recess without forcing it.
- Reject shallow engagement. An oversized bit may touch only the upper edges. Do not compensate by pressing harder; choose the size that seats throughout the recess.
An undersized bit is especially prone to slipping because its edges do not contact the full recess. An oversized bit can damage the opening when forced. “It fits” means more than entering the hole: the bit must sit squarely, reach the available depth, and resist rocking before you apply turning force.
Use this pre-drive check on a construction job
A short check before driving prevents most avoidable damage. Use it whenever you change fastener types, move to a different work package, or feel the driver slip.

- Profile: Confirm Phillips, JIS, Pozidriv, Torx, slotted, hex, Tri-Wing, or the actual profile present.
- Size: Compare neighboring sizes and select the largest one that seats fully and snugly.
- Tip condition: Look for a rounded, chipped, twisted, or otherwise deformed tip. A damaged tip will not fit as designed.
- Driver condition: Do not use a screwdriver as a pry bar or chisel. Side loading and impact can damage the tip before the next screw.
- Alignment: Position the shaft on the same axis as the screw instead of approaching at an angle.
- Pressure: Prepare to maintain steady downward pressure as you turn.
If any item fails, change the bit or reset the driver before continuing. Starting with a questionable tip or uncertain fit turns a correct screw choice into a damaged recess.

Turn without stripping the screw
Keep the shaft on-axis
Hold the driver so its shaft and the screw’s axis form one straight line. An angled approach concentrates force on one side of the recess and encourages the bit to climb out. This matters with a hand driver and with an interchangeable bit mounted in a powered driver.
Apply steady downward pressure
Maintain firm, controlled pressure toward the screw while turning. Weak pressure allows the bit to lift and slip; excessive force applied to a poor fit can deform the recess faster. Downward pressure cannot correct a mismatched profile or wrong size, so confirm fit first.
Stop at the first sign of cam-out
If the bit rides upward, chatters, or leaves fresh marks in the recess, stop turning. Recheck the profile, test the adjacent sizes, inspect the tip, and realign the shaft. Continuing after visible slipping removes material from the recess and makes later engagement less reliable.
Do not use the driver for side work
A screwdriver is not a pry bar or chisel. Using it for those tasks can deform the tip, which then fits poorly in the next screw and increases slipping risk. Keep driving bits reserved for turning fasteners and use the appropriate tool for levering or striking.

Phillips, JIS, and Pozidriv: a practical distinction
| Profile | What it may look like | Selection rule | Important caution |
|---|---|---|---|
| Phillips (PH) | Cross-shaped recess; markings may include PH2, PH1, PH0, PH00, or PH000. | Use the matching PH size that seats fully and snugly. | iFixit describes Phillips as designed to cam out under excessive torque. |
| JIS (J) | Similar broadly to Phillips. | Confirm that the fastener is JIS and use a JIS bit. | PH and J bits are not always interchangeable; JIS does not provide the same cam-out option, according to iFixit. |
| Pozidriv (PZ) | Another cross-drive appearance. | Use the corresponding PZ size, not an assumed Phillips substitute. | The Phillips Screw Company lists Pozidriv separately from Phillips. |
When markings are absent, compare the recess geometry and test fit gently by hand. Do not force a bit simply because it enters. If you cannot establish the profile with confidence, pause rather than turning a doubtful fit under load.
How to choose an interchangeable bit set
An interchangeable set is useful when a job includes several drive profiles or sizes. iFixit recommends such sets for applications ranging from electronics repair to larger jobs. For construction work, choose contents around the fasteners you actually install and service rather than buying on the assumption that one “universal” bit will cover everything.
Match the set to the work
- Profile coverage: Verify that the set includes the named systems on your fasteners, not merely several sizes of one profile.
- Size coverage: Make sure it offers adjacent sizes where a snug fit may be difficult to judge at a glance.
- Driver compatibility: Check that the bits fit your hand driver, bit holder, or powered driver.
- Application: Precision repair and larger fasteners may require different bit dimensions and handling; select a set intended for the scale of work.
- Condition: Replace worn or deformed pieces instead of leaving them in the set as if they were serviceable.
A set is not automatically better than a single bit. If every fastener on a small task uses one known profile and size, one sound matching bit is sufficient. The value of a set is coverage and quick changeover when the work genuinely varies.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshoot slipping before the recess is damaged
The bit will not seat fully
First check that the profile is correct. If it is, compare the next size down and up. A larger bit that enters only shallowly is not the answer; a smaller bit that rocks is not the answer either. Select the size that engages across the recess depth and width.
The bit seats but slips immediately
Stop and inspect the tip for rounding, chips, twisting, or other deformation. Confirm that the shaft is aligned with the screw and restore steady downward pressure. If slipping continues, treat the profile as suspect and test the appropriate drive type rather than increasing force.

The recess shows fresh damage
Do not continue turning with the same setup. Continuing can remove more material and reduce the chance of a secure fit. Replace the damaged or unsuitable bit, verify the drive system, and reassess whether the screw can still accept the intended driver. The reviewed guidance does not establish a universal recovery method for an already stripped screw, so avoid promising that a particular improvised technique will work.
The bit was used for another task
Retire it from driving if it was used as a pry bar or chisel and its tip is no longer true. A visibly damaged bit is a fit problem, even when its profile marking is correct.
Profile and size reference for common choices
| What you observe | What to verify | Action before turning |
|---|---|---|
| Cross-shaped recess | Whether it is PH, JIS, or PZ; then the exact size. | Try the correct family and compare adjacent sizes for full, snug engagement. |
| Six-lobed star | That the bit is the matching Torx profile and size. | Seat it fully and check for rocking before applying pressure. |
| Single straight slot | That the blade width and thickness fill the slot without bottoming shallowly. | Choose the blade that contacts the slot properly and keep the shaft on-axis. |
| Three-wing recess | That the bit is Tri-Wing, not a visually similar cross drive. | Use the corresponding profile and verify full engagement. |
| Six-sided internal recess | That the driver is the matching hex size. | Use a snug fit; do not substitute a different profile because it appears close. |
The table helps organize identification, but it is not a substitute for a manufacturer’s specification. No universal mapping from screw gauge to bit size is established by the cited guidance.

- Pause at the fastener. Look at the recess instead of reaching automatically for the most familiar bit.
- Name the profile. Distinguish PH, JIS, PZ, Torx, slotted, hex, Tri-Wing, or another actual system.
- Select a candidate size. Use the largest bit that can enter the recess fully.
- Compare neighboring sizes. Test one size up and down by hand and reject any bit that rocks or sits shallowly.
- Inspect the tip. Set aside anything worn, rounded, chipped, twisted, or previously abused as a pry tool or chisel.
- Seat and align. Place the bit fully in the recess and hold the driver shaft in line with the screw.
- Apply steady pressure while turning. Keep the bit engaged throughout the turn.
- Stop if it slips. Recheck profile, size, condition, alignment, and pressure before trying again.
What the available guidance does—and does not—specify
The cited material provides selection and handling principles, not a complete dimensional chart, torque table, stripping-rate statistic, or universal screw-gauge conversion. It also does not establish that any particular brand or model of bit has been tested. For a specified fastener, the manufacturer’s driver recommendation takes priority over a generic chart or visual guess.
The most defensible product decision is therefore category-based: buy or stock a screwdriver-bit set when your work spans multiple profiles and sizes, and judge it by profile coverage, size range, compatibility, application, and bit condition. Do not treat a set as proof that every included piece is correct for every screw.
Bottom line
Identify the drive profile, choose the largest size that fits fully and snugly, and check the next sizes when uncertain. Use an undamaged bit, keep the shaft on-axis, and maintain steady downward pressure. When the bit slips, stop immediately and correct the profile, size, condition, or alignment before the recess becomes stripped.
