1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe right patio heater is the one that matches your outdoor area’s exposure, the zone where people actually sit or stand, your available fuel or electrical service, and the installation rules for the exact model. Portable propane, fixed natural-gas, and electric heaters solve different problems; none has a universal BTU or square-foot promise that guarantees comfort at every site. Start by measuring the comfort zone, evaluating wind and shelter, confirming utilities, and then checking the heater’s outdoor rating, coverage chart, mounting instructions, and combustible clearances.
Start with the site, not the heater
A patio heater only works well when its output reaches people without creating an unsafe or impractical installation. Before comparing models, document the conditions at the patio, porch, deck, terrace, or outdoor work area.

Define the comfort zone
Mark the chairs, dining table, bar, or standing area that needs warmth. A heater intended to warm a four-seat table has a different placement problem from one intended to cover a long outdoor kitchen or a circulation path. Measure the zone’s length and width, note the heater’s planned position, and identify whether people will remain directly in front of it or move around.

Assess shelter and prevailing wind
Wind is one of the largest variables in outdoor or spot heating. Detroit Radiant Products’ patio-heater design guide describes wind as “perhaps the largest variable when trying to achieve comfortable heating in an outdoor or spot-heating environment.” Record the direction and strength of typical wind during the hours you use the patio. Look for walls, screens, roof overhangs, landscaping, and neighboring structures that block or channel air.
Wind curtains or other barriers can improve comfort where they are practical and permitted. They must not violate the heater’s required clearances or create a location the manufacturer forbids. A barrier that blocks one wind direction may also funnel air toward the heater, so evaluate the site rather than assuming any screen will help.
Confirm the utility you can actually use
Patio heaters are powered by propane, natural gas, or electricity. Choose only a category that fits the service at the installation point.

- Propane: Useful when the heater must move or no fixed gas connection exists. You must have a suitable cylinder, a safe way to handle and refill it, and a stable outdoor location for the complete appliance.
- Natural gas: Appropriate for a permanent location with suitable gas service. The connection, piping, shutoff, mounting, and clearances must follow the model instructions and applicable local requirements.
- Electric, including infrared models: Suitable when an outdoor-rated electrical supply is available and targeted heat or fixed mounting fits the space. Check wattage, circuit requirements, mounting height and angle, and the coverage footprint for the exact unit.
Do not buy first and investigate the utility later. A heater that cannot be connected exactly as specified is not a bargain; it is the wrong installation.
Compare the three main heater categories
| Heater category | Useful when | Trade-offs to evaluate |
|---|---|---|
| Portable propane | The heater must move, or the patio has no fixed gas connection | Tank handling and refills, mobility, outdoor-only placement, stability, and the model’s stated coverage |
| Natural gas | The location is permanent and suitable gas service is available | Fixed connection and installation, exact siting and clearances, and the manufacturer’s instructions |
| Electric patio heater, including infrared | Electrical supply is available and targeted heat or fixed mounting suits the space | Outdoor rating, wattage and circuit needs, mounting height and angle, coverage footprint, and wind exposure |
These categories are not interchangeable performance ratings. Two propane heaters can have different coverage, mounting limits, and clearances, just as two electric models can require different circuits. Compare the exact model documentation after selecting the category.
When portable propane makes sense
Propane avoids dependence on a permanent gas line and allows a heater to be repositioned as seating changes. That flexibility is valuable for seasonal layouts, rental properties, and patios used for more than one activity. It also introduces a cylinder that must be stored, connected, transported, and refilled according to the cylinder and heater instructions. The unit still needs a level, stable outdoor surface and the clearances stated by its manual.
When natural gas makes sense
Natural gas suits a heater that will remain in one planned location and where gas service is already available or can be installed. It is not a plug-and-play portable option. Confirm the fuel type, connection details, shutoff arrangement, mounting method, and required clearances before ordering. Have gas work performed by an appropriately qualified installer where local rules require it.
When electric or infrared makes sense
Electric heaters can provide targeted warmth without a cylinder at the patio. Infrared versions are often selected when the goal is a defined comfort zone rather than broad air heating, but the practical result still depends on mounting angle, height, wind, and the manufacturer’s coverage chart. Confirm that the outdoor electrical supply, receptacle, cord arrangement, and circuit can support the model as installed. Do not substitute an indoor-rated device or an extension arrangement that the manual does not permit.
Use coverage information without being misled by BTUs
“How many BTUs do I need?” is a useful starting question, not a complete sizing method. Retail buying guides, including Lowe’s guidance, publish broad BTU and area rules of thumb. Those figures are retailer guidance rather than universal engineering specifications and should not be presented as guaranteed performance.

For a more reliable fit, follow this sequence:
- Measure the seating or standing zone you want to warm.
- Classify the site as open, partially sheltered, or exposed to prevailing wind.
- Read the exact model’s coverage chart for the proposed mounting height, reflector, and heat setting.
- Check whether the chart assumes one heater, overlapping heaters, or a particular arrangement.
- Confirm that the proposed location leaves every required clearance from walls, roofs, furnishings, plants, fabrics, and other combustibles.
- Reconsider the layout if the chart and the available mounting position do not agree.
Lowering a heater can focus heat on a smaller zone, but Detroit Radiant Products’ design guide cautions that lowering it may reduce overall coverage. Conversely, mounting higher may spread the heat while making the people below feel less direct warmth. The permitted mounting range in the manual controls the decision; do not improvise a height to chase a coverage number.
Choose placement and mounting before you buy
Portable placement
Place a portable heater on an even, stable, level surface where it cannot be easily tipped or struck by moving furniture. Keep the entire appliance, cylinder, controls, and heat-emitting parts within the outdoor location permitted by the manual. A location that is technically outdoors but directly under an unapproved roof, beside combustible siding, or in a narrow passage may still be unsuitable.
Wall, ceiling, and post mounting
Fixed electric and gas units often have specific mounting brackets, angles, heights, and orientation limits. Check the structure’s ability to carry the appliance and the bracket, then verify that the planned angle does not direct heat into a ceiling, wall, awning, tree, curtain, or other combustible surface. The manual may distinguish between open-air mounting and covered patios; do not infer permission from a product photograph.
Account for people and furniture
Draw the heater’s clearance envelope on a site sketch. Include chair backs, umbrellas, curtains, cushions, decorations, stored fuel, and movable furniture, not just permanent walls. Plan access to controls and a route for moving a portable unit without dragging it across an unstable edge or stair.
Safety rules that override convenience
Never use an outdoor heater indoors
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s February 24, 2026 notice states: “Using outdoor heaters, grills, or generators indoors can cause deadly carbon monoxide buildup in minutes.” An enclosed porch, garage, tent, shed, workshop, or partially closed room can accumulate carbon monoxide even when a door or window is open. Outdoor ratings do not become indoor ratings through ventilation shortcuts.
Keep the heater stable and clear
CPSC winter safety guidance advises placing portable heaters on stable, level surfaces and keeping them at least three feet from beds, clothes, curtains, papers, sofas, and other combustible items. That is general portable-heater guidance; the selected patio heater’s manual may require a greater distance or additional restrictions. Use the larger, stricter requirement whenever guidance differs.

Verify whether a gas model is designed for propane or natural gas before purchase. Do not change fuel type, fittings, regulators, or connection methods unless the manufacturer expressly provides an approved conversion procedure. For electric units, match the stated voltage, wattage, circuit, grounding, weather protection, and cord requirements. If the installation needs new gas piping, a dedicated circuit, structural reinforcement, or a weatherproof enclosure, include that work in the project plan.
Use the manual as the final authority
Before paying, obtain the current manual for the exact model and confirm:
- Outdoor rating and permitted installation locations
- Fuel type, cylinder or gas-connection details, or electrical requirements
- Minimum and maximum mounting height
- Required clearances above, beside, and below the heater
- Approved mounting hardware and surface types
- Operating controls, shutdown procedure, and weather limitations
- Cleaning, inspection, storage, and service instructions
Retail buying guidance also recommends even, stable placement and consulting the manual. Product listings and photographs cannot replace those instructions.

Understand what government guidance does—and does not—tell you
The Department of Energy defines an outdoor heater for its gas-products discussion as an appliance designed only for outdoor spaces and intended to provide heat near the unit. DOE also reports that withdrawal of an earlier coverage determination took effect June 6, 2025. That page should not be treated as a current efficiency label or as a patio-heater purchasing standard. Use the manufacturer’s specifications, applicable code, and an installer’s advice for the selected model.
Neither the cited guidance nor the available buying guides establishes a single independent test comparing propane, natural-gas, and electric patio heaters under identical outdoor conditions. Local climate, wind, mounting, fuel prices, electricity rates, and model design can change the result. A claim that one category is universally cheapest, hottest, or most efficient goes beyond the available evidence.
A practical decision process
- Map the use area. Mark the seats or standing positions that need warmth and note whether the arrangement changes between meals, entertaining, and work.
- Record exposure. Observe wind direction, roof or wall shelter, rain exposure, and nearby combustible materials during the intended operating season.
- List available utilities. Identify a safe propane location, a suitable natural-gas connection, or an outdoor electrical supply. If none is available, price the required installation before selecting a heater.
- Select portable or fixed. Choose portability for changing layouts and fixed mounting for a permanent, planned comfort zone. Do not treat a fixed gas connection as a portable feature.
- Shortlist exact models. Compare each model’s outdoor rating, stated coverage, mounting arrangement, fuel or power requirements, and clearances.
- Draw the installation. Place the heater, people, furniture, barriers, roof edges, walls, and combustible items to scale. Confirm the entire clearance envelope.
- Verify installation responsibility. Determine whether the project needs a qualified gas installer, electrician, structural attachment, permit, or local inspection. Local requirements are not established by a general buying guide.
- Buy only after the manual passes. Keep a copy of the manual and installation records with the property information for future layout changes or replacement parts.
Examples of matching heater type to a real space
Open deck with movable seating
A portable propane heater may fit when the deck lacks fixed gas service and the seating moves. The critical checks are cylinder handling, a level surface, wind exposure, the model’s coverage at the intended position, and the three-foot general combustible guidance or the larger distance in the manual. A wind barrier may improve comfort, but only if it preserves required clearances.
Covered patio with a permanent dining table
An electric or natural-gas unit may suit a fixed dining arrangement if the model explicitly permits the proposed covered installation. Check mounting height, angle, ceiling and wall clearances, electrical or gas installation needs, and whether the coverage chart matches the table’s position. Do not assume that a roof makes an outdoor heater safe for an enclosed room.
Large, exposed entertainment area
One heater may not cover a broad, windy area comfortably. Compare the manufacturer’s coverage for multiple units and determine whether overlapping placement is allowed without violating clearances or overloading a circuit. Wind protection and seating layout may improve comfort more than simply choosing a larger nominal output.

What to check at delivery and after installation
- Confirm the model and fuel or voltage match the order.
- Inspect the heater, bracket, hose, regulator, cord, controls, and fasteners for shipping damage.
- Recheck the planned location against the current manual before assembly.
- Verify level, stable support and every required clearance.
- Confirm that gas and electrical connections were made by the appropriate qualified person where required.
- Test the shutdown procedure and keep controls accessible.
- Store or cover the unit only as the manufacturer directs; never operate it in an enclosed space.
If the installed heater does not feel warm enough, first check wind, seating distance, mounting height, heat setting, fuel or electrical supply, and the model’s coverage assumptions. Do not remove guards, alter reflectors, bypass safety controls, or change connections to increase output. Persistent problems belong with the manufacturer or a qualified service professional.
Buying checklist
Before checkout, you should be able to answer all of these questions:
- Where exactly will people sit or stand?
- How open or windy is that zone?
- Will the heater move, or is the installation permanent?
- Which fuel or electrical service is available at the location?
- What coverage does the exact model claim for the planned height and angle?
- What are the minimum clearances from every combustible surface and object?
- Is the model approved for the patio, porch, deck, or covered area you have?
- Who will complete gas, electrical, structural, or code-related work?
- Where will a propane cylinder or electrical cord be placed safely?
- What does the manual require for shutdown, storage, inspection, and service?
There is no universally best patio heater. The best choice is the model whose utility, coverage, mounting, wind strategy, and safety clearances all fit the actual space—and whose installation you can complete exactly as instructed.
