Start with the battery platform
Makita states that batteries are compatible within their respective platforms. CXT batteries are for CXT products, LXT batteries are for LXT products, and XGT batteries are for XGT products. Treat the platform name as the first compatibility check, before comparing amp-hours, charger speed or physical appearance.

The 36V (18V X2) and 80V (40V max X2) descriptions indicate products designed to use two batteries from the same platform. They do not create a general cross-platform system. An 18V LXT battery is not an XGT battery simply because both systems power cordless tools, and an XGT battery is not a substitute for an LXT battery in an 18V tool.

Makita uses “12V max” and “40V max” designations for CXT and XGT, while LXT is identified as 18V. Voltage labels describe a platform family, not every mechanical key, electronic identification requirement or approved tool combination. Always continue to the exact model check below.

Verify the exact tool model and battery receiver
Find the tool’s model number on its rating label, packaging or instruction manual. Then check the manual or the model-specific Makita documentation for the approved battery family and receiver markings. This step matters even when the platform and voltage appear to match.
The BL1830B example
Makita identifies the BL1830B as an 18V LXT 3.0Ah battery, but limits its compatibility to 18V tools that have a Star Symbol or a yellow battery receiver. An 18V label by itself therefore does not establish that every 18V Makita tool can accept this battery. Look at the receiver on the tool and confirm the model in the current manual.
- Locate the tool model and revision information.
- Confirm that the manual lists the LXT battery family.
- For BL1830B, verify the Star Symbol or yellow receiver condition specified by Makita.
- Stop if the manual lists a different platform, a different receiver, or a battery restriction.
Do not force a battery into a receiver, remove a protective feature, or rely on an online photograph of a similar-looking tool. Documentation for the exact model is decisive, particularly for legacy tools and regional variants.
Choose capacity for runtime, weight and charging needs
Amp-hours (Ah) describe battery capacity within a voltage platform. They help you compare supported batteries, but they are not a guarantee of runtime. Actual working time changes with the tool, material, load, accessory, temperature and work technique.
What the LXT capacity range means
Makita’s LXT catalog lists battery capacities from 2.0Ah through 6.0Ah. Before choosing the largest option, confirm that the tool manual supports it and consider whether the added capacity is useful for the way the tool is held and used. A compact battery can be preferable for overhead or detail work; a higher-capacity battery can reduce battery changes during demanding work, at the cost of additional size and weight.

Makita’s BL1850B runtime claim
In its 2024/2025 Reference Catalog, Makita says the 5.0Ah BL1850B provides up to 65% more runtime per charge than the BL1830. That is a manufacturer comparison for those stated products, not an independently measured result and not a guaranteed percentage for every tool or workload. The same catalog says the BL1850B charges in 45 minutes or less with the specified rapid charger. Use the figure as a planning reference, not as a promise of a particular number of cuts, holes or operating hours.
Match the charger to the battery and your workflow
The charger must be approved for the battery platform and battery model. After compatibility, choose the number of ports and the charging speed that fit your crew’s routine. Makita lists several LXT options, including the DC18RC rapid charger, DC18RD dual-port charger and DC18SF four-port charger.

Makita’s catalog gives example DC18RC charge times by LXT battery capacity. The figures below are manufacturer specifications, not independent charging tests.

Makita’s BL1830B product page separately states a full charge in 30 minutes or less. The exact time can depend on the battery condition, charger model and the instructions applicable to your region, so use the manual and charger documentation supplied with your equipment.
Single, dual or four-port charging
- Choose a single-port charger when one battery is normally in use and one spare can be charged between tasks.
- Choose a dual-port charger when two batteries must be replenished without waiting for a second charging session.
- Choose a four-port charger when a crew cycles several LXT batteries and reducing charger handling is more important than using a compact setup.
Port count does not change platform compatibility. A multi-port LXT charger remains an LXT charger; it is not a universal CXT or XGT charger.

The ADP10 exception: an XGT charger charging an LXT battery
Makita describes the ADP10 as an adapter that allows a 40V max XGT charger to charge 18V LXT batteries. Makita lists the charger and batteries as sold separately. This is a charging-path exception, not a tool-platform conversion.

- It does not make an LXT battery compatible with an XGT tool.
- It does not turn an XGT battery into an LXT battery.
- It does not replace the exact battery, charger and tool instructions for your models.
If your question is whether an LXT battery can run an XGT tool, the ADP10 does not change the answer: platform compatibility still has to be established by the XGT tool documentation.
A practical selection process
- Write down the tool model. Use the complete model number, including any suffix shown on the tool or manual.
- Identify the platform. Confirm whether the tool is CXT, LXT or XGT. For a high-output product, check whether it requires two LXT or two XGT batteries.
- Read the battery compatibility section. Record the approved battery models rather than assuming every battery in the same voltage family is accepted.
- Inspect the receiver. For an 18V tool intended for a BL1830B, look for the Star Symbol or yellow receiver specified by Makita.
- Choose Ah within the approved list. Select a capacity based on the balance between runtime, handling and the number of spare batteries available.
- Choose the charger platform. Confirm that the charger is listed for the battery. For LXT, compare the DC18RC, DC18RD and DC18SF according to the number of batteries you need ready.
- Check charge-time tables. Use Makita’s stated times for the battery capacity you selected, and allow for the actual workflow on your site.
- Confirm regional documentation. Availability and model combinations can vary by country and catalog edition. Use the latest local manual and product documentation.
- Buy only the combination documented for your equipment. Keep the battery, charger and tool instructions together so a replacement battery or charger can be checked later.
Worked examples
Replacing a 3.0Ah LXT battery
Suppose your tool manual identifies an 18V LXT receiver with the Star Symbol or yellow battery receiver and your current battery is a BL1830B. A replacement BL1830B is the direct like-for-like choice. Makita states that it reaches full charge in 30 minutes or less with the applicable rapid charger. If you are considering a higher-capacity battery, confirm that the exact tool lists it before purchasing.
Extending time between battery changes
If the tool documentation supports the BL1850B, the 5.0Ah battery may be useful when you want fewer changes. Makita claims up to 65% more runtime per charge than the BL1830 and a charge time of 45 minutes or less under the specified charging setup. The claim does not predict the runtime of your particular saw, drill, vacuum or outdoor tool.
Keeping multiple LXT batteries ready
A user who rotates two batteries can consider the DC18RD dual-port charger. A crew managing several LXT batteries may prefer the DC18SF four-port charger. If only one battery is normally waiting for charge, the DC18RC single-port rapid charger may be the simpler arrangement. In every case, confirm the battery and charger pairing in the current documentation.

Using an XGT charger in an LXT charging setup
If you already have a compatible XGT charger and need to charge an LXT battery, the ADP10 is the specific adapter Makita describes for that purpose. Verify the charger, adapter and battery instructions before connecting anything. The arrangement affects charging only; it does not authorize the LXT battery for an XGT tool.

Makita warns against non-genuine “knock-off” batteries and batteries that have been altered. Its U.S.A. Service FAQ says that such batteries may defeat the electronic communication system between the battery and charger and between the battery and tool. Makita does not provide a measured failure rate in that warning, so treat it as a safety and compatibility caution rather than a quantified performance statistic.
- Use a battery and charger identified for the platform and model in the documentation.
- Do not modify terminals, housings, electronic protection or receiver features.
- Do not use a battery that is swollen, cracked, leaking, overheated or otherwise damaged.
- Stop charging if the charger indicates a fault and follow the manual’s inspection and service instructions.
- Do not assume that a battery fitting physically means its electronic communication is approved.
Troubleshooting a battery or charger that does not work
The battery will not slide into the tool
Remove it without force. Recheck the platform, battery model, receiver color or symbol and the tool manual. A physical mismatch is a compatibility warning, not a reason to reshape the battery or tool.
The battery fits but the tool will not run
Confirm the exact model restrictions. The BL1830B example shows that an 18V tool may still require a Star Symbol or yellow receiver. Inspect the battery for damage, check the charge state and test only with a documented compatible battery if the manual permits it.
The charger refuses to charge
Verify that the charger is intended for the battery platform, that the battery is seated correctly and that the contacts are clean and undamaged. Check the charger’s fault indication and manual. If the battery or charger has been altered or is not genuine, electronic communication may not operate as Makita designed.

The charge time is longer than expected
Compare the battery capacity and charger model with Makita’s published table. A 6.0Ah LXT battery is listed at 55 minutes on the DC18RC, compared with 30 minutes for a 3.0Ah battery and 45 minutes for a 5.0Ah battery. Temperature, battery condition and the charger’s instructions can also affect the result. Do not treat a catalog time as a guarantee for every condition.
Check region, revision and documentation before purchase
Makita catalogs and model availability can vary by region, and a tool manual is specific to its model. Before ordering a replacement or building a mixed-tool setup, check the latest instruction manual and local product page for the tool, battery and charger. This is especially important for legacy tools, revised receivers and products sold under different regional model numbers.
Keep a record of the batteries and chargers your crew owns. Listing each model, platform, capacity and approved charger makes future replacements safer and prevents a well-intentioned purchase based only on voltage or appearance.
Bottom-line decision rule
Choose the platform first, then prove compatibility at the exact tool receiver and manual. Pick Ah for the runtime-and-handling balance you actually need, and select a charger for that battery platform and the number of batteries your work requires. The DC18RC, DC18RD and DC18SF are LXT charging options with different port arrangements; the ADP10 is a specific XGT-charger-to-LXT-battery charging adapter, not a cross-platform tool adapter.
