Choose an extension cord by matching the appliance’s marked wattage or amperage to the cord’s marked capacity at the required length, then confirm the cord suits the environment, plug grounding and safety listing. The shortest practical cord is usually the safest choice; there is no single gauge that fits every appliance.
Start with the appliance, not the cord
The appliance determines the minimum capacity your cord must provide. Find the nameplate, rating label or instruction manual and record the wattage, amperage and any statement about extension-cord use. A manufacturer’s instruction that prohibits an extension cord overrides every general selection rule.

Use the marked electrical demand
Compare the appliance’s stated demand with the extension cord’s actual label. The cord’s packaging or tag should identify its wire gauge and maximum amp or watt rating, often with a length or use condition. Do not estimate capacity from a cord’s color, flexibility or apparent thickness. A heavy-looking cable can still have a rating that is too low, while a slim cable may be correctly rated for a small load.

The cord’s marked capacity must meet or exceed the appliance’s demand. Never use a cord with a lower rating simply because it reaches the outlet or appears to work. An undersized cord can overheat internally before a household breaker responds. If the appliance label gives only watts, use the watt rating as printed and look for a cord whose stated watt capacity covers it; if the label gives amps, compare amps directly.

Respect appliance instructions
Some appliances are designed to connect directly to a receptacle and may specifically prohibit extension cords or power strips. Follow that instruction even when a cord appears to have enough capacity. If the manual is missing and the label is unclear, identify the appliance model and obtain the manufacturer’s instructions rather than guessing.
Gauge and length must be considered together
American Wire Gauge (AWG) numbers describe conductor size: a lower AWG number generally indicates a larger conductor. The usable amp limit also depends on how far current travels. Longer cords create more electrical resistance, so the same gauge may support a lower amp range at 100 or 150 feet than at 25 feet.
The table below reproduces the Electrical Safety Foundation International’s (ESFI) example guidance. It is a screening aid, not a replacement for the cord’s own marked rating, the appliance instructions or advice from a qualified professional.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute| Extension-cord length | ESFI-listed gauge and appliance current range |
|---|---|
| 25–50 feet | 16 AWG: 1–13 A; 14 AWG: 14–15 A; 12–10 AWG: 16–20 A |
| 100 feet | 16 AWG: 1–10 A; 14 AWG: 11–13 A; 12 AWG: 14–15 A; 10 AWG: 16–20 A |
| 150 feet | 14 AWG: 1–7 A; 12 AWG: 8–10 A; 10 AWG: 11–15 A |
How to read the table
First identify the appliance’s amp demand. Next identify the cord’s complete length, not merely the distance from the outlet to the appliance. Find the corresponding row and verify that the cord’s own label supports at least that current. If the cord label gives a lower limit than the table suggests, the label governs. If the appliance falls outside these ranges, stop and obtain specific guidance rather than extrapolating.
Choose the shortest practical length
Measure the route before buying. Select a cord that reaches without tension, sharp bends or an improvised connection, but avoid extra length coiled beside the appliance. A shorter cord generally reduces voltage drop and leaves less cable to trip over, crush or expose to moisture. Do not choose a longer cord merely to keep a spare length available.

Match the cord to its setting
Indoor versus outdoor marking
Use a cord marked for indoor use only inside. Outdoor work requires a cord specifically marked for outdoor service and suitable for the expected weather and physical exposure. Indoor cords can have insulation and construction that are not intended for sunlight, wet ground, abrasion or temperature changes.
Water requires GFCI protection
ESFI recommends ground-fault circuit-interrupter (GFCI) protection outdoors and wherever water and electricity could meet. A GFCI can disconnect power quickly when it detects current taking an unintended path, but it does not make an incorrectly rated, damaged or indoor-only cord safe. Use the proper outdoor cord and keep every connection away from standing water, snow and runoff.

Keep the grounding path intact
If the appliance has a grounding pin, use a grounded extension cord with a matching receptacle. Never cut off the grounding pin, bend it away or force a three-prong plug into an incompatible two-slot receptacle. Do not use an adapter that defeats grounding. The plug, cord and receptacle must be mechanically compatible before power is applied.
Look for independent safety certification
Choose cords approved by an independent testing laboratory, such as UL, Intertek (ETL) or CSA. A recognized listing is not a substitute for checking capacity, length and condition, but it provides an important screening check against counterfeit or inadequately constructed products. The mark should appear on the cord, tag or packaging rather than only in an online description.
Use this seven-step selection workflow
- Read the appliance. Locate the nameplate or manual and note wattage, amperage and any prohibition or special instruction concerning extension cords.
- Define the route. Measure from the receptacle to the operating position and identify whether the route is indoors, outdoors, damp, exposed to traffic or likely to be pinched.
- Pick the shortest workable length. Allow enough reach to prevent tension, but do not add unnecessary cable or plan to leave excess tightly coiled.
- Check the cord tag. Confirm the AWG, maximum amps or watts, stated length and indoor/outdoor designation. Use the actual marked rating, not an inference from gauge or color.
- Match capacity. Verify that the cord rating at that length is at least the appliance demand. If the values do not clearly match, do not energize the appliance.
- Confirm compatibility and listing. Check the number of prongs, grounding arrangement, receptacle fit and an independent laboratory mark such as UL, ETL or CSA.
- Inspect before connecting. Reject a cord with cuts, crushed insulation, exposed conductors, bent or loose blades, scorch marks, damaged strain relief or a plug that fits loosely. Replace it rather than repairing it with tape.
Compare candidate cords by the facts on their labels
When two cords appear similar, compare them systematically. The lower price or thicker-looking jacket does not establish suitability.

Use an extension cord only as temporary wiring
ESFI describes an extension cord as a temporary solution, not a long-term extension of a household electrical system. If a cord is needed every day, left in place between tasks or used because a room lacks enough receptacles, the safer remedy is a properly installed outlet. A qualified electrician can assess the circuit and install additional receptacles or other permanent wiring.
Do not overload or chain cords
Connect one correctly rated cord directly to the receptacle whenever possible. Do not plug one extension cord into another, plug a power strip into an extension cord, or use multiple cords to reach farther. Chaining increases connection resistance, creates more failure points and makes the total load harder to evaluate.
Keep heat from being trapped
Do not run cords through walls, ceilings, floors or doorways. Do not place them under rugs, carpeting or furniture, and do not cover them with materials that prevent heat from escaping. These routes can damage insulation, hide deterioration and create a trip hazard. Route a temporary cord where it is visible and protected from crushing, vehicles, sharp edges and foot traffic.
Keep high-heat and air-moving appliances off cords
ESFI says not to use an extension cord or power strip with heaters or fans. Their sustained or motor-related loads can overheat an unsuitable cord or connection. Follow the appliance maker’s instructions for other high-demand equipment; if direct connection to a properly installed receptacle is required, do not substitute an extension cord.
Use outdoor cords with outdoor equipment
For outdoor tools or appliances, use an outdoor-rated grounded cord, connect through GFCI protection and keep the plug connection elevated and shielded from rain or puddles. Do not bury a temporary cord, run it through a gate or window where it can be pinched, or leave it exposed after the task ends.

Stop immediately when a cord shows warning signs
Turn off the appliance and disconnect the cord if you notice any of the following:
- The cord, plug or socket feels hot during normal operation.
- There is a burning smell, smoke, discoloration, melting or arcing.
- Insulation is cut, cracked, flattened, frayed or missing.
- A grounding pin or blade is bent, loose or missing.
- The plug falls out, fits loosely or requires pressure to stay in place.
- A circuit breaker or GFCI trips repeatedly when the appliance is connected.
- The appliance starts, stops or loses power when the cord moves.
A hot cord or connection is a warning, not a condition to monitor until the job is finished. After disconnecting, check the appliance demand, cord rating, length, routing and physical condition. Replace a damaged cord. If the cord and appliance appear correctly matched but overheating or repeated trips continue, stop using the appliance and have the circuit and equipment evaluated by a qualified professional.
How the method applies to common situations
A short indoor run for a low-demand appliance
Read the appliance label, select the shortest cord that reaches, and confirm the tag’s amp or watt rating is higher than the appliance demand. Verify the plug fits and the cord carries an independent laboratory listing. Even for a small load, do not hide the cord under a rug or leave it installed permanently.
A long run to a work area
Measure the full run and use the length-specific rating. A cord suitable at 25 feet may not have the same amp allowance at 100 or 150 feet. Check the ESFI ranges for orientation, then confirm the product’s own marked limit. If the required length pushes the appliance beyond the cord’s rating, move the appliance, install a receptacle or obtain professional advice rather than joining cords.
An outdoor appliance or tool
Choose outdoor-rated construction, maintain grounding, use a GFCI-protected supply and keep all connections dry and visible. Inspect for abrasion after each use because outdoor exposure can damage insulation even when the cord still appears flexible.

A grounded appliance in an older room
Do not defeat the grounding pin to fit an older receptacle. A compatible grounded receptacle and appropriate circuit may need to be installed by a qualified electrician. An adapter that removes the grounding path does not solve the underlying wiring problem.
Why these precautions matter
The ESFI page states that roughly 3,300 home fires originate in extension cords each year, but the retrieved guidance does not identify the year of that estimate or its original underlying data. Treat it as general hazard context, not as a current, year-specific fire rate. The practical controls remain clear: match the marked load, use the correct length and environment, preserve grounding, keep cords temporary and replace anything damaged or hot.
“However, regardless of the gauge or rating of the cord, an extension cord is a temporary solution and is not meant to be used as a long-term extension of your household’s electrical system.” — Electrical Safety Foundation International, Extension Cord Safety Tips.

When an outlet is the better solution
Frequent reliance on extension cords is evidence that the electrical layout may not meet the way the space is used. If a cord stays in place, crosses a normal walkway, must be chained to reach, or powers equipment regularly, ask a qualified electrician to assess the circuit and consider additional outlets. Permanent wiring removes temporary routing hazards and allows the circuit, receptacle and protective devices to be selected for the actual load.
