The right lumber grade depends first on the job, not on a grade name by itself. For wall framing and other ordinary light-frame parts, select a certified grade intended for that member and follow the plans and local building code. For joists, rafters, headers, beams, trusses, or other load-bearing members, match the specified species or species group and grade to approved design values and span requirements. For trim and other visible work, choose an appearance and machining quality that meets the finished look, while confirming that the product is rated for its actual use.
A cleaner-looking board is not automatically adequate for a structural member, and a structural grade is not necessarily the best choice for exposed finish work. The guide below shows how to make that distinction, read a grade stamp, and verify requirements in North American projects.

What lumber grades mean
Lumber grading is a system for limiting characteristics and manufacturing imperfections that affect a piece’s strength, utility, or appearance. Western Wood Products Association (WWPA) states: “Dimension lumber grading rules limit natural characteristics and manufacturing imperfections that affect the strength and utility of the piece.” Graders may evaluate each piece visually or with digital scanning, depending on the grading system and facility. See WWPA’s explanation of dimensional lumber grading.
A grade is not a universal quality ranking that works across every species, size, or use. Rules are written for particular products and applications. A grade used for a 2-by-4 wall stud should not automatically be applied to a wide plank, a joist, a beam, or a visible trim board. The species, actual dimensions, moisture or seasoning state, structural design values, exposure, and jurisdiction all matter.

Start with the job and the member dimensions
Ordinary light-frame walls and blocking
For non-engineered wall framing, sills, plates, cripples, and blocking, use a light-framing classification recognized for the species and size you are buying. WWPA identifies Construction, Standard, and Utility as light-framing grades. These categories are intended for basic framing applications, but the exact dimension ranges and grade rules are WWPA-specific; another grading agency may organize products differently.
Confirm the plans and local code before substituting grades. A board that appears straight and sound can still fail to meet the required certified grade or design value. Visual selection is useful for rejecting damaged material, but it does not replace the grade stamp, the applicable grading rules, or structural design.
Vertical studs
Stud is a separate grade intended for vertical use, including load-bearing walls. It is an optional grade in the WWPA system, not a universal label for every piece suitable for every structural purpose. Use it only within the species, dimensions, and design limits for which the rule applies. A stud grade does not automatically qualify a board for a horizontal joist, rafter, header, or beam.

Members carrying significant bending, tension, compression, or shear need a structural classification and a design check. WWPA’s Structural Joists & Planks category covers engineering applications such as joists, rafters, headers, small beams, and trusses. Structural light-framing categories include grades such as Select Structural and Nos. 1, 2, and 3. Those names are meaningful only when paired with the correct species or species group, dimensions, grading rules, and published design values.
Use the grade and species specified by the engineer, architect, span table, or code-approved prescriptive table. Do not upgrade or downgrade by appearance alone, and do not assume that a higher-sounding grade in one species has the same capacity as that grade in another.

Trim, cabinetry, and other visible work
Finish work is judged primarily by visible character, machining behavior, stability, and the surface you can achieve. Knots, color variation, grain, checks, splits, and wane may be acceptable in a rustic design but unacceptable in painted or clear-finished trim. Select material sold under an appearance or finish classification appropriate to the species and product, and verify that it is intended for the exposure and fastening conditions of the project.
Structural grade and appearance grade solve different problems. A structural board can contain characteristics that are permitted for strength but undesirable on an exposed surface. Conversely, a visually clear board may not carry the certified structural value required for a load-bearing member. The Southern Pine Inspection Bureau (SPIB) shows a distinct Finish & Select mark category, but appearance-grade terminology is not a complete cross-species comparison; follow the rule set for the specific species.

The categories and examples in this table reflect WWPA’s classifications; they are not a universal ranking for every North American lumber product. The American Lumber Standard Committee list of grading-rule organizations shows why the rule publisher must be identified.
How to read a lumber grade stamp
A certified stamp is the fastest way to connect a board to the rules and agency that govern it. The National Lumber Grades Authority (NLGA) explains that a certified stamp indicates inspection by a qualified grader under rules or standards approved by the Canadian Lumber Standards Accreditation Board (CLSAB) and/or the American Lumber Standard Committee (ALSC). Read the complete mark rather than relying on one familiar abbreviation.
- Find the registered agency symbol. This identifies the organization responsible for the inspection or certification mark. If the symbol is unfamiliar, look it up with the agency or ask the lumber supplier for the grading-rule reference.
- Identify the mill, plant, or grader information. The mark can connect the piece to the producer or grading facility and helps resolve questions about a shipment.
- Read the grade itself. Record the exact wording, such as Stud, Construction, No. 2, or a species-specific finish designation. Do not translate one grade into another agency’s terminology without checking the rule book.
- Read the species or species combination. Species may be abbreviated. American Wood Council guidance says species or species combination is normally a standard stamp component under PS 20. Use the full designation when checking design values.
- Check seasoning or moisture information when shown. The stamp may identify a dry or other seasoning state. Moisture condition affects dimensions, movement, and sometimes the permitted use, so follow the product rule and project specification.
- Note any additional marks and treatment codes. A mark can contain information about the product or processing. Do not infer chemical preservative treatment from the letters HT: SPIB’s lumber FAQ explains that HT means heat treated, not chemically preservative treated. Confirm treatment from the treatment label and purchase documents.
If a species abbreviation is unclear, contact the inspection agency rather than guessing. AWC’s frequently asked questions and SPIB’s lumber FAQs explain why the complete stamp matters.

Species abbreviations can change the answer
Two boards with similar dimensions and the same numbered grade can have different structural values because they belong to different species or species groups. AWC notes that species designations are usually part of the standard stamp under PS 20. SPIB explains that SP or SYP can identify Southern Pine, while SPF identifies Spruce-Pine-Fir. These abbreviations are examples, not a substitute for reading the complete designation and checking its rule set.

When a plan specifies a species group, do not replace it with a different group simply because the replacement has the same nominal size or a familiar grade name. If a supplier proposes a substitution, obtain confirmation that the substitute has equal or greater approved design values for the required load, span, connection, and exposure conditions.
Match structural lumber to design values and span requirements
For a load-bearing member, the grade stamp is only the beginning of the check. The design must account for span, spacing, loads, bearing, lateral restraint, holes and notches, connections, moisture or exposure, and the member’s orientation. Use the design values and span tables recognized by the applicable code or engineering authority.
Where can I get span tables?
Span tables are not interchangeable across species groups or grades. SPIB addresses this question in its lumber FAQs; use the table that matches the stamped species, grade, dimensions, spacing, load assumptions, and jurisdiction. If the project is outside a prescriptive table’s limits, have the member designed rather than selecting a board by sight.
When an engineer or designer must decide
- Use the specified grade and species for beams, headers, trusses, long spans, concentrated loads, or unusual support conditions.
- Obtain a design when the member is outside the code’s prescriptive tables, when loads are uncertain, or when openings, notches, drilling, or connections change the normal assumptions.
- Keep the grade stamp or delivery records with the project documentation so the installed material can be verified.
Choosing finish lumber by appearance and machining needs
For visible work, define the finished result before buying. A clear-coated handrail, painted casing, exterior soffit, and built-in shelf may all require different tolerances for knots, color, grain, edge quality, and movement.

Set the appearance target
- Clear finish: prioritize consistent color, attractive grain, and minimal knots or defects that will remain visible.
- Paint finish: prioritize a stable, machinable surface and defects that can be filled or concealed without telegraphing through the coating.
- Rustic or utility appearance: decide which knots, saw marks, color changes, and repaired defects are acceptable before ordering.
Check machining and stability
Look for straight edges, clean faces, adequate thickness after surfacing, and freedom from twist that would prevent tight joints. Ask whether the product is sold rough-sawn, surfaced, or pre-milled, and allow for the finished dimensions needed by the detail. Acclimate interior finish lumber to the building’s service conditions as required by the product guidance; otherwise joints can open or boards can cup after installation.
Confirm exposure and treatment
Interior appearance lumber is not automatically suitable outdoors, in wet areas, or where it contacts masonry or soil. Confirm the required decay resistance, preservative treatment, coating system, and fasteners separately. HT on a stamp indicates heat treatment only; it does not establish preservative treatment.

North American lumber is governed by multiple rule publishers, including NeLMA, RIS, SPIB, PLIB, WWPA, and NLGA. The ALSC directory identifies recognized organizations and helps you determine which rule book applies to a stamp.
For Canadian lumber, NLGA identifies its September 2025 Standard Grading Rules edition as superseding earlier editions and lists supplements effective May 1, 2026. The current publication is available from NLGA’s publications page, and the rule book itself is available as a 2025 edition PDF. NLGA rules may also be approved for U.S. standard lumber under the stated accreditation framework, so verify the exact approval and local adoption for your project.

A practical buying and installation workflow
- Describe the use. Write down whether each piece is a wall component, vertical stud, joist, rafter, header, beam, truss part, trim, cabinet component, or exterior finish.
- Record the dimensions and loading. Include nominal and actual dimensions, span, spacing, support, bearing, and any concentrated or unusual loads.
- Identify the required species or species group. Use the plans, approved span table, specification, or engineer’s design rather than a supplier’s informal substitution.
- Choose the applicable grade category. Select light framing, Stud, structural joist/plank, structural light framing, or an appearance/finish classification as appropriate to the use.
- Verify the stamp at delivery. Check agency, mill or grader, grade, species combination, seasoning state, and treatment information against the order.
- Reject or quarantine questionable pieces. Separate boards with missing or illegible stamps, shipping damage, excessive warp, splits, or defects outside the permitted rule. Ask the supplier or agency for a documented resolution.
- Install within the design assumptions. Preserve orientation, bearing, spacing, fastening, restraint, and limits on holes and notches. A correctly graded board can still be misused or weakened by installation.
- Document substitutions. Keep written approval when a species, grade, source, or product form changes from the plans.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Choosing the prettiest board for a beam
Appearance does not establish bending, shear, or connection capacity. Use the specified structural grade and design values first; select the best-looking pieces only within that approved set.
Using a structural grade for exposed trim
Structural rules permit characteristics that may be unacceptable on a visible face. Order an appearance or finish classification and confirm surfacing, moisture, and machining requirements.
Treating all No. 2 lumber as equivalent
A numbered grade must be read with its species or species group, dimensions, grading agency, and design values. Do not compare a grade number across unrelated rule systems without documentation.
Assuming a familiar abbreviation
SP, SYP, and SPF refer to different species groups in common usage. Read the complete stamp and ask the agency when an abbreviation is uncertain.
Confusing heat treatment with preservative treatment
HT means heat treated according to SPIB’s FAQ. It does not prove chemical preservation or outdoor durability; verify the treatment label and use requirements separately.
Relying on a visual inspection instead of certification
Warp, damage, or obvious defects are reasons to set a piece aside, but a visual check cannot replace a certified grade stamp, published design values, or an engineer’s judgment where required.
