How to Choose and Use a DEWALT Wet Saw: Lessons from the Tim Carter Video

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The “DeWALT Wet Saw Video” is a Tim Carter demonstration listed by Ask the Builder. Its catalog description says Carter shows how to use a DEWALT wet saw and explains which features matter when buying a diamond tile saw. The listing does not identify the saw’s model or give an original publication date, so it is not accurate to call the machine shown a specific current model.

For a present-day reference point, DEWALT’s U.S. product listing identifies the D24000 as a corded 10-inch heavy-duty wet tile saw. Its published capacities and included water-handling equipment illustrate the specifications a buyer should examine, but they do not prove that the D24000 appears in the older video.

What the DeWALT wet saw video actually covers

Ask the Builder’s DIY video catalog describes the item as “Tim Carter demonstrates how to use a DeWALT wet saw and what features to look for when purchasing a diamond tile saw.” That establishes two useful reader questions:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • How is a wet tile saw operated?
  • Which specifications distinguish one diamond tile saw from another?

The catalog entry is a description, not a verified transcript. It does not name the saw model, document the blade used, list the tile size being cut, or establish when the video was first published. Treat any model identification seen in an unverified repost or thumbnail as uncertain.

The practical value of the video is therefore broader than a model review. It introduces the workflow—supporting tile on a wet-cutting table, guiding a diamond blade through the material, and controlling water and alignment—and gives a framework for evaluating a purchase.

How a wet tile saw cuts

A wet saw uses a diamond-rimmed blade rather than teeth. The blade removes a narrow path of tile while a water stream cools the cutting edge and suppresses dust. The tile normally rests on a sliding or fixed table; the operator advances the work into the blade instead of forcing the blade through by hand.

Water does not make an unsafe cut safe. It reduces airborne dust and blade heat, but the blade remains exposed, the work can bind, and electrical equipment is being used around water. Follow the saw manufacturer’s manual for grounding, residual-current protection, guards, blade installation, and minimum water level.

Features to check before buying a diamond tile saw

Cut capacity and geometry

Start with the largest tile and the cut shapes your project requires. A saw’s headline rip capacity may describe a straight cut along the tile’s length, while a plunge specification describes how far the blade can enter a tile for an interior opening. Diagonal capacity matters when a square tile must be divided corner to corner.

  • Rip capacity: the maximum straight cut in the normal table orientation.
  • Plunge capacity: the usable reach for starting or stopping inside a tile.
  • Diagonal capacity: the largest square tile that can be cut across its diagonal.
  • Tile thickness: confirm the maximum thickness for the blade position and intended cut.

Do not select a saw from tile length alone. A large-format installation may require repeated diagonal, L-shaped, or notch cuts that demand different clearances from a simple rip cut.

Accuracy and repeatability

Look for a rigid table, a fence that locks square, a guide that stays parallel to the blade, and controls that can be read while water is running. A capacity number is useful only if the table supports the tile without sagging and the fence does not move during the cut.

For repeated pieces, check whether the saw has a positive stop or an easily repeatable measurement scale. For miters or bevels, verify the adjustment range and how securely it locks. A small amount of movement at the fence can create visible variation across grout joints.

Water containment and pump design

Inspect the pan, splash guards, drain path, and pump access. The system should keep enough water at the blade to cool it without flooding the work area. Extensions can be important when a long tile must remain supported on both sides of the cut.

Ask how easily the pan can be removed and cleaned. Tile slurry settles quickly; a difficult-to-clean reservoir encourages contaminated water, which can reduce pump flow and leave abrasive grit on moving parts. Keep a separate container available for disposing of slurry according to local rules rather than pouring concentrated sediment into a household drain.

Motor, blade, and material compatibility

Motor power is only one part of performance. The blade must be rated for the saw’s diameter, arbor, rotation speed, and the material being cut. Porcelain, ceramic, glass, stone, and masonry can require different diamond formulations and operating limits.

DEWALT’s DW4764 XP4 is listed as a 10-inch wet-cutting porcelain tile diamond blade. That description makes it a porcelain-tile option, not a universal blade for every saw or material. Before buying any replacement, match the blade diameter and arbor to the saw and confirm that the blade’s material rating covers your tile.

Portability and setup

Wet saws combine a table, motor, pan, pump, and water, so transport and cleanup can determine whether a feature-rich saw is practical on your job. Check the machine’s packed size, carrying points, stand requirements, and whether the table or extensions can be removed without tools.

For a renovation with many rooms, a saw that is easy to carry and drain may save more time than a larger capacity that is rarely used. For a fixed workshop, table rigidity and water containment may deserve priority over compact storage.

Safety and serviceability

Confirm that the blade guard, splash protection, electrical cord, switch, and pump are replaceable or serviceable. Read the manual’s instructions for wet-area electrical protection and inspect the cord before every use. The machine should have a stable stance so the table cannot shift as a long tile is pushed through.

Current DEWALT example: D24000 specifications

DEWALT’s current U.S. listing provides a concrete example of how a manufacturer presents wet-saw specifications. These are published product details, not measurements from the Tim Carter video or an independent hands-on test.

Specification D24000 listing Why it matters
Product type Corded 10-inch heavy-duty wet tile saw Indicates blade class and the need for a suitable powered work area.
Rip-cut capacity Up to 25 inches Relevant to straight cuts along long rectangular tiles.
Plunge-cut capacity Up to 28 inches Useful for starting or ending cuts inside a tile’s field.
Diagonal square-tile capacity Up to 18 inches Shows the largest stated square-tile diagonal cut.
Motor 1.5 HP A published power rating; it does not by itself predict feed speed on every material.
Water equipment Water pan, extensions, and submersible pump These components affect setup, splash control, support, and maintenance.
Included blade DW4764 porcelain tile blade Check blade condition, fit, and material suitability before cutting.

DEWALT’s tile and masonry saw category also lists the D24000 among its models. That confirms it is a current product example, not that it is the machine shown in the cataloged video.

Step-by-step: using a wet saw safely

1. Plan the cut

Measure the finished face, account for the grout joint, and mark the waste side of the tile with a pencil or suitable marker. Dry-fit the tile and identify whether the cut is a rip, diagonal, notch, or plunge cut. A second measurement is cheaper than a replacement tile.

2. Inspect the saw and blade

With the saw unplugged, check that the blade is the correct diameter and arbor, turns freely, and has no cracks, missing segments, or obvious warping. Confirm that the guard is installed and that the table, fence, and extensions lock securely.

3. Set up water and electrical protection

Place the saw on a stable, level surface with room for the tile and for the operator to keep both hands clear of the blade path. Fill the pan to the manual’s specified level, position the pump and tubing, and verify that water reaches the blade before making a production cut. Use the required ground-fault or residual-current protection for the location and keep connections away from standing water.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Align the tile

Place the glazed face according to the blade and saw instructions, align the mark with the cutting path, and set the fence or guide. Support large or flexible tiles on both sides of the blade. Keep the tile flat; rocking or lifting it can chip the edge or pinch the blade.

5. Make a controlled cut

Start the motor and water flow before the blade contacts the tile. Feed at a steady rate that lets the blade do the work. Excessive force can deflect the blade, stall the motor, or break the tile. Keep fingers outside the guard and never reach across the blade while it is moving.

6. Handle plunge and notch cuts deliberately

For an interior opening, follow the saw’s approved plunge method and make relief cuts where appropriate. Do not twist the tile around a running blade. Complex L-cuts are often safer when made as several straight cuts, leaving the waste supported until the final separation.

7. Finish, unplug, and clean

After the cut clears the blade, switch off the saw and wait for the blade to stop before removing the tile. Unplug the machine before clearing fragments, changing the blade, or servicing the pump. Drain and clean the pan, remove slurry from the pump screen, wipe the table, and allow components to dry before storage.

Choosing between saws: a practical decision framework

If your priority is… Examine first Questions to answer
Long straight cuts Rip capacity, table length, fence rigidity Will the tile remain supported throughout the cut?
Large square tile Diagonal capacity and extension support Is the stated diagonal figure for the tile size you actually use?
Plumbing or outlet openings Plunge capability and guide clearance Can the saw start inside the tile without unsafe twisting?
Fast residential setup Weight, carrying points, pan removal Can one person place, drain, and store it safely?
Low mess Pan depth, splash guards, pump flow, drain access How will slurry be captured and disposed of?
Multiple tile materials Blade availability and ratings Is there a compatible blade for each material and thickness?

Common problems and how to correct them

Chipped glaze

Check that the blade is rated for the tile, the tile is fully supported, and the feed rate is controlled. A worn or contaminated blade can increase chipping. Make a short test cut on a scrap piece before cutting installed-piece dimensions.

Blade wandering or an out-of-square cut

Verify that the fence is square and locked, the table is clean, and the blade is installed correctly. Do not compensate by pushing harder; correct the alignment and support first.

Weak water flow

Stop the saw and disconnect power before inspection. Clean sediment from the pan, pump intake, and tubing, then refill with clean water to the specified level. If flow remains poor, follow the manufacturer’s pump-service procedure rather than operating a dry blade.

Tile binding or cracking

Ensure the tile is flat, supported, and aligned with the blade. Reduce feed pressure and keep the cut continuous. For a long cut, arrange an assistant or support table so the finished section cannot drop and lever against the blade.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Unclear blade fit

Do not rely on the blade’s diameter alone. Match the arbor, rotation direction, guard clearance, and wet-cut rating to the saw. The DW4764 listing identifies porcelain-tile use; it does not establish compatibility with every DEWALT saw or every tile type.

What to take from the video when shopping

Use the cataloged demonstration as a checklist rather than as a model-specific buying recommendation. First define the tile sizes, materials, and cut shapes your project requires. Then compare capacity, accuracy, portability, water handling, blade compatibility, and serviceability. A current specification such as the D24000’s published capacities can show how to read a product page, but it should not substitute for checking your own tile and workspace.

The most reliable purchase is the saw whose verified capacity and support match the hardest cut you must make, whose water system you can maintain, and whose approved blades are available for your material. Confirm every dimension and accessory in the manufacturer’s current manual and product listing before ordering or beginning work.
