An electric chainsaw is the practical choice when you need lower-maintenance cutting for pruning, yard cleanup, or firewood without a petrol engine. The right saw depends on whether you have convenient mains power, how far you must carry it, the diameter and frequency of your cuts, and—on battery models—your battery platform and expected runtime. Corded saws avoid battery charging but require a correctly sized extension cord and disciplined cord management; battery saws travel anywhere but stop when the battery needs charging or changing.

No single electric chainsaw is best for every job. Choose capacity from the manufacturer’s intended use, verify the exact bar, battery and charger configuration, and follow the product manual for operation, lubrication, maintenance and protective equipment.

What an electric chainsaw is

Electric chainsaws use an electric motor rather than a petrol engine. They are sold in two forms:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Corded electric: power comes from an outlet through an extension cord. This suits work close to an appropriate outlet, provided the cord can be routed without creating a trip, cut or entanglement hazard.
  • Battery electric: a rechargeable battery powers the saw. It is easier to move around a property and avoids a trailing power cord, but usable cutting time depends on the battery, charge, workload and conditions.

These are practical distinctions identified by STIHL’s buyer guidance and OSHA safety material, not independent performance rankings. A saw’s weight, balance, bar length, chain speed, controls and intended capacity still vary by model.

Corded or battery: which fits your work?

Decision point Corded electric Battery electric
Power access Requires a suitable outlet and an extension cord sized exactly as the saw manufacturer specifies. Requires a charged, compatible battery and usually a charger; no outlet is needed at the cutting location.
Portability Limited by outlet location and safe cord routing. Cordless and easier to carry between trees, piles and remote parts of a site.
Interruptions Can run while connected to power, but cord handling can slow repositioning. Work stops when the battery is depleted unless you have a charged spare. Published “up to” runtimes are not guaranteed.
Ongoing ecosystem No battery platform to maintain, but you need an appropriate extension cord and outlet. Battery and charger compatibility is model- and platform-specific. Do not assume packs interchange between brands or models.
Best fit Repeated cuts in a defined area near power. Pruning, cleanup and firewood work where mobility matters or outlets are unavailable.
Safety focus Keep the cord away from the chain and route it so it cannot be cut, snagged or trip anyone. Check battery installation, charge and condition; keep the saw’s guards and safety controls functional.

For either type, lighter or quieter operation does not make a chainsaw risk-free. The chain can cause severe injury, and the manual remains the controlling instruction for that model.

Choose capacity for the actual job

Start with the largest routine cut, not an occasional extreme example. Branch diameter, log size, wood species, cutting frequency, access and your ability to maintain a stable two-handed position all matter. A longer bar is not automatically safer or more capable; it can change balance and handling. Use the manufacturer’s capacity and task descriptions rather than treating a bar length as a universal cutting limit.

Manufacturer task categories

STIHL’s battery-equipment buying guide places its models in broad use categories:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • MSA 60: light trimming, pruning and small logs.
  • MSA 70: yard maintenance and firewood.
  • MSA 200: medium-to-heavy tasks.

Those descriptions are manufacturer guidance, not independent tests or universal cut-size limits. Confirm the exact model’s manual, approved bar-and-chain combinations and operating limits before attempting a larger log.

Runtime is a planning figure, not a promise

Battery capacity is commonly expressed through the battery model, but the usable result changes with battery type, state of charge, capacity, saw model, operating style and conditions. STIHL gives the MSA 60 C-B as an example: up to 40 minutes with an AK 20 battery or up to 55 minutes with an AK 30 S. “Up to” describes a manufacturer maximum under stated test conditions; it is not guaranteed continuous cutting time on your site.

Plan for pauses, tougher wood, cold or hot conditions, chain sharpness and repositioning. If a job must be completed in one session, obtain the manufacturer-approved spare battery and charger, and verify what the kit actually contains.

A documented battery example: STIHL MSA 60 C-B

The U.S. MSA 60 C-B illustrates the specifications you should check on any battery saw. STIHL presents it for general yard maintenance and firewood cutting. Its listed features include a 36 V rated voltage, the STIHL AK cordless power system, a variable-speed trigger, quick chain adjustment and a translucent chain-oil tank.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The set version is described as including an AK 20 battery and AL 101 charger. A unit-only version is sold without a battery and charger. Verify the current variant, package contents and availability at purchase; the same model name can appear in more than one configuration. STIHL’s stated runtime for the AK 20 is up to 40 minutes, subject to the conditions described in its runtime information. This example is not an independent recommendation and is not a claim of suitability for heavy or professional cutting.

What to verify before buying

1. Power and location

For a corded saw, identify the outlet you will use and read the manual’s extension-cord requirements. OSHA instructs users to size extension cords according to the saw manufacturer’s instructions. Do not substitute a convenient but undersized cord, and do not route a cord where the moving chain can reach it.

2. Battery and charger contents

Check whether the listing is a complete kit or a tool-only package. Confirm the battery family, charger model, voltage and approved replacements. Batteries, chargers, bars and chains are not automatically interchangeable across brands or even across models.

3. Weight and balance

Look up the saw’s stated weight and determine whether that figure includes the battery, bar and chain. A saw that feels manageable empty may become tiring with a large battery. Hold the tool in its normal two-handed position, with the front handle and rear handle aligned to your working stance, before committing to long sessions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Capacity and frequency

Match the manufacturer’s intended use to your work. Occasional pruning has different demands from processing a stack of firewood or cutting larger limbs. If the job exceeds the model’s stated category, use a saw designed for that work or hire trained help rather than forcing a light-duty model.

5. Lubrication and adjustment

Every chainsaw requires chain lubrication and inspection. Determine how oil is added, what lubricant the manual specifies, how chain tension is checked and whether adjustment is tool-free. The MSA 60 C-B, for example, has a translucent oil tank and quick chain adjustment, but those features do not remove the need for regular checks.

6. Service and support

Readily available parts, sharpening, batteries and authorized service can matter more than a small difference in advertised specifications. STIHL directs U.S. customers to authorized dealers for in-store purchases, advice and service. Follow the equivalent support route for your own brand.

Use that certification check together with the product manual and appropriate training. OSHA’s logging standard addresses workplace logging operations; it should not be treated as a universal consumer legal rule, but its operating principles are useful reminders.

  1. Confirm the saw and work area. Read the exact manual, identify the intended cutting capacity, remove people from the danger area and check for unstable footing, overhead hazards and hidden objects in the wood.
  2. Inspect controls and safety devices. Check the chain, bar, handles, chain brake and other guards or controls. OSHA advises confirming that controls and chain tension are properly adjusted before use.
  3. Check power. For a corded model, use only the extension-cord size specified by the manufacturer and route it away from the cutting path. For a battery model, install the approved, charged battery securely and check that the pack and contacts are undamaged.
  4. Wear task-appropriate PPE. OSHA identifies chainsaw protective clothing and relevant eye, face, hearing, hand, foot and head protection. Select equipment that matches the job, applicable standards and each item’s instructions.
  5. Establish secure footing. Stand with stable balance and a clear escape path. Keep both hands on the handles while cutting; do not operate one-handed.
  6. Start as the manual directs. Engage the chain brake or other required starting control, place the saw in the prescribed position and release the brake only when ready to cut. Keep the bar clear of people and objects.
  7. Make controlled cuts. Keep the saw within the manufacturer’s operating zone, avoid forcing the chain and watch for movement, pinching and kickback. Do not cut directly overhead; OSHA specifically advises avoiding overhead cuts.
  8. Stop before repositioning. Release the trigger, engage the chain brake and follow the manual before carrying, clearing material or changing position. Disconnect a corded saw or remove the battery before servicing or making adjustments when the manual requires it.

Lubrication, chain adjustment and storage

Chain oil is not optional. Check the oil level before work and refill with the lubricant specified in the manual. A dry or poorly lubricated chain increases friction and wear. Do not assume one oil specification fits every saw.

Inspect chain tension at the intervals given by the manufacturer. A chain that is too loose can derail; one that is too tight can increase wear and load. Sharpen or replace the chain using the model’s specified type and procedure. Inspect the bar, sprocket, brake, handles and guards, and stop using the saw if a safety device does not work correctly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For storage, remove the battery from a battery saw when the manual directs, protect the chain and bar, keep oil from contaminating electrical contacts and store batteries and chargers under their specified temperature and charging conditions. A corded saw should be unplugged and its cord stored without sharp bends or damage.

Troubleshooting common problems

The saw will not start

  • Confirm the battery is charged, correctly seated and compatible, or confirm the corded saw is connected to the specified power source.
  • Check the chain brake, trigger lock and other start interlocks described in the manual.
  • Stop if a warning indicator appears or if the battery, cord, plug or housing is damaged; use the manufacturer’s service route.

The chain stops or cuts slowly

  • Release the trigger and inspect chain tension, sharpness and lubrication.
  • Verify that the bar and chain are approved for that model.
  • Do not compensate for a dull chain by forcing the saw or exceeding its intended material and capacity.

Runtime is shorter than expected

Compare the battery’s charge and capacity, workload, cutting style and environmental conditions with the manufacturer’s runtime caveats. “Up to” figures are maxima, not a service guarantee. A dull chain, heavy wood and repeated acceleration can all reduce practical runtime. If the battery no longer holds a useful charge, use an approved replacement rather than an incompatible pack.

Recalls and certification checks

Recall status is product-specific. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission documented a February 1, 2018 recall involving certain Greenworks, Kobalt and Snapper cordless electric chainsaws with 16- or 18-inch bars and 80- or 82-volt lithium-ion batteries. The reported hazard was that a chain-brake guard could fail, allowing the saw to continue operating. That historical notice is not evidence that electric chainsaws generally share the defect.

Before using a second-hand or older saw, locate the exact model and serial identifiers and check current CPSC and manufacturer notices. Do not operate a recalled saw until the stated remedy is completed. Also verify the NRTL certification and read the current manual for the exact edition and configuration.

A practical buying decision

  • Choose corded when your cuts stay near a suitable outlet, continuous connection is more valuable than mobility, and you can route the extension cord safely.
  • Choose battery when you move around a yard or site, cannot rely on an outlet, or already own a compatible battery platform. Budget for a charger and, if the workload demands it, a second approved battery.
  • Choose a light-duty category for trimming and small logs, a yard-maintenance/firewood category for routine household cutting, and a higher category only when the manufacturer specifies it for your material and workload.
  • For large, unstable, overhead or otherwise hazardous work, use a suitably trained operator and equipment designed for that work instead of stretching an electric saw beyond its stated purpose.
