There is no single thermoplastic membrane that prevents every chemical or ultraviolet (UV) failure. For a low-slope commercial roof, PVC and PVC KEE are generally the strongest starting points for chemical exposure, while TPO can be an effective all-around choice when the specific substance, concentration, temperature and contact pattern are compatible. The final selection must be tied to a named product, roof assembly, installation method and written warranty.
Start by identifying exactly what can reach the roof—such as grease, oil, acids, solvents, animal fats or process discharge—then obtain the manufacturer’s compatibility confirmation or test representative samples. Evaluate UV and heat-weathering data for that product separately. A chemical-resistance chart or accelerated-weathering result is guidance, not a project-specific guarantee.

What thermoplastic roofing membranes are available?
Thermoplastic single-ply roofing is heat-weldable: seams can be fused with hot air, allowing a continuous sheet when the substrate, laps and details are prepared correctly. The three choices most relevant to chemical and UV exposure are thermoplastic polyolefin (TPO), polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and PVC modified with ketone ethylene ester (PVC KEE). Their formulations, reinforcement, surface layers and additives differ, so a statement about one product cannot be transferred to every membrane carrying the same generic name.

TPO is widely used as a versatile, reflective single-ply membrane. Tremco describes it as an all-around thermoplastic option, but chemical compatibility depends on the substance and exposure conditions. TPO products can perform well in many service environments, yet variation among formulations means the product data sheet and compatibility confirmation matter more than the acronym alone. UV resistance also varies by formulation, thickness, reinforcement and installation quality.

PVC
PVC membranes contain plasticizers and stabilizers that provide flexibility and weathering performance. Tremco’s March 4, 2026 technical bulletin says PVC is among the thermoplastic types widely regarded as having the best chemical resistance. PVC is often shortlisted where oils, grease or process chemicals may contact the roof, but the exact chemical, concentration, temperature and duration still control the result.
PVC KEE
PVC KEE uses a ketone-ethylene-ester modifier intended to improve performance in demanding service. Tremco places PVC KEE with PVC among the strongest common thermoplastic choices for chemical resistance. That does not make every PVC KEE sheet immune to every chemical; seams, flashings, penetrations and accessories must be compatible too.
| Membrane | Chemical-exposure position | UV and heat considerations | What must be verified |
|---|---|---|---|
| TPO | Versatile, but compatibility is substance-specific and can differ between products. | Industry observations show variation among TPO products and sensitivity to concentrated heat near reflective surfaces. | Named chemical, concentration, temperature, contact frequency, product test data and installation limits. |
| PVC | Widely regarded as one of the strongest common thermoplastic choices for chemical resistance. | Weathering performance is product-specific; UV additives, thickness and detailing affect results. | Manufacturer compatibility confirmation, seam and flashing materials, UV/heat test evidence and warranty exclusions. |
| PVC KEE | Also widely regarded as a leading chemical-resistance option among thermoplastics. | Published results can be strong, but values apply only to the named product and test setup. | Exact KEE formulation, chemical test conditions, accessory compatibility and written warranty. |
Why chemical resistance cannot be reduced to a simple ranking
A chemical may have little effect during a brief splash but soften, swell, embrittle or discolor a membrane after continuous contact. The same substance can behave differently when it is hot, concentrated or trapped beneath equipment. Tremco’s chemical-resistance bulletin states that the degree, exposed area and frequency of contact affect performance. It also presents qualitative chart categories and warns that unlisted substances require technical consultation; the chart is not a substitute for independent testing. Read the complete Tremco chemical-resistance bulletin for the product and substance in question.

Before asking for a recommendation, document:
- The chemical’s trade and generic name, concentration, pH where relevant and any mixture components.
- Normal and worst-case temperature at the membrane surface, including heat from exhausts, process lines or stored materials.
- Whether contact is a mist, occasional splash, recurring spill, ponded liquid, wash-down stream or continuous immersion.
- The approximate area, spill volume, clean-up method and expected duration before the roof is rinsed.
- Whether the liquid can reach seams, edge metal, drains, fasteners, insulation, walk pads or flashing adhesives.
Grease and oil deserve particular care. A product marketed as chemically resistant may tolerate a limited exposure but still be unsuitable for hot cooking oil, animal fats, petroleum solvents or a drain discharge that remains on the roof. Compatibility of the field sheet does not prove compatibility of the seam, coating, adhesive, cover tape or penetration boot.

GAF’s EverGuard PVC Chemical Resistance Guide says, “The best means to determine whether a substance is compatible with EverGuard® PVC membranes is a laboratory analysis.” The same guide reports laboratory observations and recommends actual-service or simulated testing for a specific application; it expressly says the guide is not a performance warranty. Use the GAF application and specification manual in that limited way: to identify questions for the manufacturer and laboratory, not to authorize an unreviewed chemical installation.
What the evidence says about UV and heat weathering
UV performance is influenced by solar spectrum, surface temperature, membrane color, thickness, stabilizers, welding and maintenance. An accelerated chamber result indicates how a specimen behaved under a defined cycle; it does not convert directly into a number of outdoor years for every climate or roof assembly.
ASTM exposure conditions reported for TPO
IIBEC’s 2016 technical advisory discusses ASTM D6878-13 xenon-arc exposure for TPO specimens. One reported condition is 10,080 kJ at 340 nm with a black-panel temperature of 176°F (80°C). That is a laboratory exposure setting, not a service-life prediction. The advisory also summarizes a 10-year update of the WSRCA TPO Weathering Farm study: 15 of 16 tested membranes generally performed satisfactorily in the studied climates, while one showed micro-cracking and splits at creases. The advisory describes substantial variation among TPO products and concerns about concentrated elevated heat near reflective surfaces. Read the historical context and installation recommendations in IIBEC Technical Advisory No. 012-2016; it is not a current ranking of every TPO membrane.

Siplast describes its Parasolo PVC and PVC KEE systems as offering weathering and UV resistance, and describes its PVC as protective against chemicals, oil and grease. In a comparison of its 60-mil products, the company reports higher seam, breaking and tear values than its listed industry-standard PVC benchmark and accelerated weathering above 179,000 kJ/m² in the table’s ASTM G154 row. Those figures apply to the named Parasolo products and stated comparison; they are not an independent statistic for all PVC or PVC KEE membranes. Manufacturer-specific PVC claims
GAF states that its EverGuard PVC cap layer contains UV additives and reports performance above ASTM G154 by more than eight times at twice irradiance. That is a GAF product claim, not an independent comparison of the entire PVC market. Ask for the exact test method, specimen construction, irradiance, cycle and acceptance criteria before using the figure in a specification. See GAF PVC roofing resources.
How to choose a membrane for a chemically exposed roof
- Map every exposure source. Walk the roof and the areas below it. Locate exhaust outlets, kitchen hoods, process vents, cooling equipment, chemical storage, waste lines, loading zones and maintenance routes. Include accidental spills and wash-down water, not just normal operation.
- Define the worst credible conditions. Record concentration, temperature, contact time, frequency and affected area. A brief splash and a warm liquid that ponds at a drain are different design cases.
- Shortlist membrane families. PVC and PVC KEE are sensible first candidates when chemical exposure is significant, while TPO may remain suitable where documented compatibility and the overall roof requirements favor it. Do not select on generic membrane type alone.
- Request product-specific documentation. Give the manufacturer the chemical name, concentration, temperature, exposure pattern, membrane thickness, reinforcement and accessory list. Ask for written compatibility confirmation and identify any conditions that invalidate it.
- Test representative materials when the consequence is high. For a known process chemical, use laboratory testing or an agreed simulated exposure with the actual sheet, welded seam, flashing, adhesive, coating and accessory. Test the proposed cleaning and spill-response chemicals as well.
- Evaluate UV and heat evidence separately. Review the product’s current weathering data, color and thickness options, expected surface temperature and nearby reflective or high-heat conditions. Do not turn chamber energy or irradiance into a promised field lifespan.
- Design drainage and protection. Eliminate standing liquid where practical, route discharges away from the membrane, provide compatible walkways under service traffic and protect areas where spills are likely. A chemically compatible sheet can still fail if water, heat or traffic concentrates at a detail.
- Write installation requirements into the specification. State approved welding temperatures and procedures, seam-width requirements, probing, patching, substrate preparation, flashing materials and inspection records. Require the installer to follow the current manufacturer manual.
- Obtain the actual warranty before award. Read exclusions for chemicals, oil, grease, animal fats, jet fuel, ponding, misuse, unapproved cleaners and unauthorized repairs. Confirm which assembly, thickness, accessories and installer qualifications the warranty covers.
- Plan inspection and maintenance. Establish spill reporting, prompt cleanup, periodic seam inspections, drain cleaning and documentation of any chemical event. Early removal of a contaminant can prevent a small compatibility issue from becoming widespread damage.
Is PVC or TPO better for chemical exposure?
For an unknown or substantial chemical exposure, PVC or PVC KEE usually deserves the first technical review because Tremco identifies those families as widely regarded as having the best chemical resistance among common thermoplastic single-ply membranes. That is a starting point, not an automatic specification. A particular TPO can be the correct choice when the chemical is documented as compatible, the service temperature is controlled, the roof details are appropriate and the system warranty meets the owner’s needs.
Choose between specific products by comparing the same six items: compatibility with the named chemical and concentration; temperature and exposure frequency; UV and heat evidence for the exact product; seam, flashing and installation requirements; warranty exclusions; and manufacturer confirmation or testing under representative conditions. If one of those items is unknown, the selection is incomplete.

Will grease or oil damage a TPO roof?
It can. The outcome depends on the oil or grease, temperature, dwell time, amount and membrane formulation. Do not assume that a reflective TPO sheet will tolerate a recurring kitchen discharge, animal fat or petroleum product simply because it is marketed as durable. Obtain written compatibility information for the exact substance and detail, and control the source with equipment curbs, discharge piping, spill containment or a sacrificial protection system where appropriate.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What chemical-resistance warranties actually cover
Performance language and warranty protection are separate issues. The reviewed manufacturers expressly describe chemical exclusions:
| Manufacturer or document | Published warranty position | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|
| Tremco | Its warranties do not cover chemical attack, including grease, oil and other chemicals. | A compatibility chart cannot be treated as a promise that chemical damage will be repaired under warranty. |
| Siplast | Its warranties and guarantees exclude chemicals, oil and grease. | Confirm exclusions in the current warranty for the named Parasolo assembly and accessories. |
| GAF | Its warranties and guarantees exclude chemical exposure and exposure to grease, animal fats and jet fuel. | Obtain the current EverGuard warranty and verify whether the planned operation falls within exclusions. |
Read the complete warranty issued for the actual project, region, membrane thickness, attachment method and accessory package. Ask the manufacturer to identify in writing whether a known process discharge is an excluded exposure. A contractor’s statement that a membrane is chemical-resistant cannot expand the manufacturer’s legal warranty.

Installation details that determine real-world durability
Even a well-selected sheet can fail at seams, corners, penetrations or creases. IIBEC recommends following current industry and manufacturer guidance, with attention to welding temperatures, seam probing and avoiding creases. Welding that is too cool can leave an incomplete bond; excessive heat can damage the sheet or reinforcement. Probe completed seams after they cool, repair defects with approved materials and document the inspection.

Keep incompatible primers, cleaners and adhesives off the membrane. Confirm that metal flashings, sealants, pipe boots, coatings and walkway products are approved for the selected sheet. Detail transitions so chemical-laden water cannot migrate beneath laps or collect at a curb. At equipment areas, provide designated walk pads and service routes rather than allowing repeated traffic over unprotected membrane.
Heat concentration deserves its own review. Dark equipment, reflective wall panels, rooftop condensers and exhaust outlets can raise local temperatures above the general roof surface. Compare the expected temperature with the membrane’s published limits and place discharge outlets so hot air or contaminated condensate does not impinge on seams and flashings.
Specification and handover checklist
- Name the exact membrane manufacturer, product, thickness, reinforcement and color.
- Attach the chemical inventory with concentration, temperature and exposure frequency.
- Require written compatibility confirmation for the sheet, seams, flashings, adhesives, coatings and accessories.
- State whether laboratory or simulated service testing is required before approval.
- Identify UV, heat and accelerated-weathering data for the selected product without converting it to years of service.
- Specify substrate preparation, welding parameters, seam probing, repair procedures and inspection records.
- Show drains, overflow paths, equipment curbs, discharge outlets, walk pads and spill-containment details on the roof plan.
- List the warranty document, exclusions, required installer credentials and owner maintenance obligations.
- Provide the owner with a spill-response procedure and contacts for the membrane manufacturer and roofing contractor.
Bottom line for a commercial low-slope roof
PVC and PVC KEE are the most defensible starting families when documented chemical exposure is a primary design issue, while TPO may be suitable when product-specific testing confirms compatibility and its UV, heat and installation requirements fit the project. None of these labels guarantees immunity. Identify the chemical and service conditions, test the proposed assembly when the risk warrants it, design and weld the details correctly, and read the written warranty’s chemical exclusions before work begins.
