The safest alternate route is not automatically the shortest one. Before setting out, check the latest closure or roadworks information from the responsible highway authority, confirm whether the signed diversion is open and suitable for your mode of travel, allow extra time, and compare surface, visibility, accessibility and traffic complexity. Near the works, temporary signs and traffic controls take priority over a navigation app. Without your origin, destination, travel mode and live local conditions, no general guide can name one universally safest route.
What makes an alternate route safer?
Roadworks change the conditions that a normal journey depends on. A familiar road may be closed, narrowed, reduced to one lane, controlled by temporary signals or restricted to particular users. A route that looks quicker on a map can therefore create more risk if it is also affected by works, poorly signed, unsuitable for your travel mode or difficult to use safely.

Official street-works guidance treats diversion choice as a safety and suitability assessment, not simply a travel-time calculation. Compare each candidate route against the same questions:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Is it open now? Check whether the usual road is fully closed, restricted with a signed route through, or operating under temporary controls. Confirm that the alternative has not acquired a closure of its own.
- Does it follow the intended diversion? Temporary signs normally show the route selected for the works. A route that departs from those signs may expose you to restrictions, unsuitable roads or work areas.
- Does it suit your mode? A vehicle diversion is not automatically a safe walking or cycling route. Pedestrians and cyclists may have separate signed paths, crossings or dismount points.
- Can you use it safely and accessibly? Consider the surface, width, barriers, gradients, lighting, separation from traffic and the ability to see and be seen.
- Is the extra time proportionate to the added complexity? A small estimated saving is not proof that an unfamiliar shortcut is safer. Allowing time is often the safer choice.
Check the situation before leaving
Plan before you reach the closure. Advance signs may warn of works, expected delays, a full closure or an opportunity to take another route. Current information is essential because works can move between phases and restrictions can change during the day.

- Identify the responsible authority. For a motorway or major trunk road, check National Highways journey-planning and planned-roadworks information. For a local street, use the relevant local highway authority’s current roadworks and closure information. The Department for Transport traffic-sign guidance applies in England, Scotland and Wales; elsewhere, check the rules of the road authority responsible for your journey.
- Check shortly before departure. Record the closure location, direction, operating hours, expected delay and any stated diversion. Information that was accurate in the morning may not describe the conditions later in the day.
- Classify the restriction. Establish whether you can pass under temporary signals, whether a lane or footway is closed, or whether the road is closed to your mode altogether. This determines whether you need a diversion or simply need to approach the works in a different lane.
- Find at least one alternative and a fallback. Use the official signed diversion where one is provided, then identify another option in case the alternative is also congested or inaccessible. Do not assume that a route shown by a navigation service has been checked against the latest temporary restrictions.
- Check suitability for the person travelling. For walking and cycling, inspect the proposed route for a continuous signed path, safe crossings, surface condition and any requirement to dismount. For drivers, consider lane changes, junction complexity, vehicle restrictions and the need to queue safely.
- Build in time. Advance warnings are intended to give road users time to allow for delays, choose another route or make other arrangements. Leaving earlier is safer than trying to recover a small delay with faster or more complicated driving.
- Save the authority’s contact or reporting route. If the signed path is blocked or the information conflicts with conditions on the ground, you can seek current guidance rather than entering a closed work area.
Compare routes using the same evidence
Write down the options if the choice is not obvious. The following comparison keeps speed from dominating the decision.
| Criterion | Questions to ask | What a safer answer looks like |
|---|---|---|
| Current status | Is the route open in the direction you need? Are there restrictions at the time of travel? | Recent information from the responsible highway authority and signs that agree with the conditions on the road. |
| Official diversion | Does the route correspond with the temporary diversion signs? | A continuous route that is clearly signed through or around the works. |
| Delay | How much extra time is likely, including queues and unfamiliar junctions? | Enough time allowed to travel without rushing or making last-second manoeuvres. |
| Mode suitability | Can a car, bicycle or pedestrian legally and practically use every part of the route? | The route has the signs, space and controls intended for that mode. |
| Accessibility | Are the surface, width, gradients, barriers and crossings usable for the traveller? | A continuous, stable route with enough clearance and a safe way around obstructions. |
| Visibility and separation | Can road users see one another and react in time? Is there separation from moving traffic? | Good sight lines, predictable crossings and a clear boundary between people and vehicles. |
| Navigation complexity | Will the route require unfamiliar lane changes, multiple crossings or decisions at short notice? | Simple, well-signed movements that can be made in good time. |
If two routes are otherwise comparable, prefer the one with clearer official signing and fewer complex interactions. Do not treat an estimated minute saving as decisive when it requires an unmarked crossing, a narrow path beside traffic or a last-second lane change.
Driving through or around roadworks
Read temporary signs as instructions
The Highway Code’s rule 288 states: “Observe all signs – they are there for your safety and the safety of road workers.” Temporary signs may impose a speed limit, close a lane, direct traffic through a different lane or point to a diversion. They are not suggestions to be overridden by a satnav route.
Approach the works in the correct lane
Choose the lane indicated by the signs in good time. Sudden moves at the taper or beside barriers can put road workers and other drivers at risk. If you miss the recommended lane, continue safely and follow the next instruction rather than forcing your way across traffic.
Keep within the temporary speed limit
Do not exceed a temporary limit, even when the road appears empty or the work area is inactive. Narrow lanes, shifted carriageways, uneven surfaces, plant, workers and changing sight lines leave less margin for error than the normal road layout.

Leave a safe gap and expect queues
Maintain a safe following distance and anticipate abrupt braking. Avoid overtaking queuing traffic; a queue may be approaching a lane closure, temporary signal or hazard that is not yet visible. If the queue extends beyond the expected location, use the authority’s current information rather than improvising a shoulder or side-road manoeuvre.
Let signs, not the app, decide at the scene
Navigation data can lag behind a temporary closure or suggest a turn that is prohibited by the works layout. If the app and the road signs disagree, obey the signs and traffic controls. Pull over legally and safely if you need to re-plan; do not handle a phone while moving.
Walking when a pavement or crossing is affected
Use the temporary pedestrian route
Stay outside barriers, hoardings and closed work areas. Follow the signed pedestrian diversion, even when a gap appears to offer a shorter way. A work site can contain moving plant, excavations, uneven ground and vehicle movements that are not visible from the pavement edge.
Check continuity, not just the first sign
A safe walking diversion must remain identifiable through each turn and crossing. Look for the next sign before leaving one section. If the route suddenly ends, leads into a barrier or requires you to walk in live traffic without clear control, stop and seek current information from the responsible highway authority.
Assess the surface and obstacles
Roadworks can introduce temporary ramps, loose material, narrow passages, uneven surfaces and changes in level. Consider whether the route can be used steadily and safely by the person travelling, including anyone using a mobility aid, pushing a child’s buggy or carrying luggage.

Use crossings with adequate visibility
At a temporary or relocated crossing, check that approaching drivers can see pedestrians and that pedestrians can see approaching traffic. Do not step out from behind a vehicle, barrier or site board where neither party has enough time to react.

Cycling around a closure
Look for cycle-specific information
Advance signs may identify a cycle diversion or explain that cyclists must dismount and use an adjacent footway. A motor-vehicle diversion is not automatically suitable for a bicycle: it may contain high-speed traffic, narrow lanes, prohibited turns or no safe place to stop.
Follow the signed route and dismount instruction
Where a sign directs cyclists to dismount, walk the bicycle on the designated footway or other indicated route. Give pedestrians priority and remain alert to temporary barriers, kerbs and changes in surface.
Check every link in the route
A route may look suitable on a map but fail at a bridge, junction or crossing. Confirm that cycle access continues beyond the first diversion sign, that you can reach the next road safely and that any shared section has enough space for everyone using it.
Do not trade visibility for a shortcut
A narrow side road or unmarked crossing may be shorter but harder for drivers to see. Prefer a route with predictable priority, clear separation and enough room to position yourself safely at junctions.

Accessibility, visibility and separation
Roadworks affect people differently. A diversion that is manageable for a confident adult on foot may be unusable for someone with limited mobility or vision. Include the traveller’s actual needs in the route decision rather than treating accessibility as an optional extra.
- Surface: Look for stable, even ground and avoid loose material, abrupt edges and pooled water where these make walking or wheeling difficult.
- Width and clearance: Check that barriers, signs and street furniture leave enough usable space for the person and any mobility equipment.
- Wayfinding: A person with a visual impairment may need a continuous, understandable route and warning of temporary obstacles. Do not move barriers or rely on an unmarked gap.
- Crossings: At a diverted crossing, assess sight lines, traffic speed and the time available to cross. A crossing hidden by site fencing or parked vehicles needs extra caution and may require another signed point.
- Separation: Keep pedestrians and cyclists away from moving plant and live traffic wherever the temporary layout provides a segregated path.
If the only apparent route is blocked, inaccessible or unsafe, do not enter the works or step into traffic. Report the problem or ask the responsible authority for current instructions.

The road is closed despite an earlier route plan
Stop before the closure, obey the advance sign and take the signed diversion. Do not reverse, turn around in a live lane or follow another vehicle through a barrier. If the official diversion is also blocked, use a legal place to stop and obtain updated information.
The app offers a different route
At the work site, temporary signs and traffic controls have priority. Continue on the signed route unless an authorised person directs otherwise. Re-plan only when stationary and in a safe location.

Keep the original safety margin. Do not speed, overtake a queue or make a sudden turn to recover time. If arriving late has consequences, notify the person expecting you rather than increasing the risk of the journey.
A simple decision process at each junction
Use this sequence whenever you reach a choice between the normal road and an alternate route:
- Read: Identify every temporary sign, signal, barrier and lane marking before moving.
- Confirm: Decide whether the instruction applies to your mode and direction of travel.
- Position: Move into the required lane or onto the signed pedestrian or cycle path in good time.
- Check: Look for people, plant, vehicles emerging from the site and changes in surface or level.
- Commit: Follow the controlled route at the stated speed; do not make a last-second shortcut.
- Reassess when stationary: If the route ends unexpectedly, stop in a safe place and obtain current information before continuing.
Common mistakes and safer corrections
| Mistake | Why it creates risk | Safer correction |
|---|---|---|
| Choosing the shortest line on a map | It may run through another closure, an unsuitable road or an inaccessible crossing. | Check live status, official signing and mode suitability first. |
| Assuming a car diversion works for a bicycle | Vehicle routes may lack safe space, crossings or legal cycle access. | Follow cycle-specific signs and verify every link. |
| Walking through a gap in barriers | The work area may contain hazards and moving plant. | Use the signed pedestrian diversion or seek authority guidance. |
| Following a satnav against temporary signs | Navigation data may not reflect a new restriction. | Obey signs and re-plan only when safely stopped. |
| Changing lanes at the last moment | Other drivers may not expect the movement near a taper or work crew. | Read advance signs and select the lane early. |
| Overtaking a queue | The queue may conceal a closure, signal or worker activity. | Keep a safe gap and remain in the controlled flow. |
| Ignoring accessibility | A narrow, uneven or poorly visible diversion can exclude or endanger the traveller. | Check surface, width, visibility and crossing time before setting out. |
An illustrative comparison
Imagine a road closure on a commuter’s usual street. A driving app offers a side road that appears to save a few minutes, while temporary signs direct traffic along a longer route. The signed route is preferable if the side road has no confirmed open status, requires an abrupt turn across traffic or is not designed to carry diverted vehicles. The driver should follow the temporary signs, keep within the posted limit and allow for the queue.

The signed vehicle diversion could be unsuitable if it lacks cycle space, while a separate cycle sign may direct the rider to dismount and use a footway. A pedestrian may need a third route because the vehicle road offers no safe walking space. The example shows why route choice must be made for the actual mode and traveller, not copied from another commuter.
What to verify before every disrupted commute
- Current closure or restriction information from the responsible authority.
- Whether the normal road is passable under temporary controls or requires a diversion.
- Whether the alternative is itself affected by works.
- The official temporary signs and any mode-specific instruction.
- Expected delay and enough spare time to avoid rushing.
- Continuous access for your car, bicycle or walking route.
- Surface, width, barriers, crossings, visibility and separation from traffic.
- A safe place to stop and re-plan if the conditions do not match the plan.
Roadworks information and temporary layouts can change. Check shortly before setting out, then treat the signs and controls you encounter as the current instruction. The safest alternate route is the one that is open, clearly directed, suitable for your mode and usable at the speed and level of attention the situation demands.
Frequently Asked Questions
What should I do when roadworks block my usual route?
Stop before the closure, read the temporary signs, and use the signed diversion that is suitable for your mode. If the diversion is blocked or inaccessible, remain outside the works and obtain current guidance from the responsible highway authority.
Can I ignore a diversion because my navigation app shows a faster route?
No. At the scene, temporary signs, lane markings, signals and instructions from authorised traffic controllers take priority. Re-plan only when safely stopped.
Is the official vehicle diversion safe for cyclists or pedestrians?
Not necessarily. Check for cycle- or pedestrian-specific signs, continuous access, safe crossings, suitable surfaces and separation from traffic. A motor-vehicle route should not be assumed suitable for another mode.
