Choose a coastal facade screen as a complete, engineered assembly—not as a material label or visual finish. The correct selection combines the site’s chloride and wetting exposure, the screen’s alloy or coating, panel geometry, supports, fasteners, anchors, substrate and wall interfaces, then verifies the whole system for project wind pressure, suction, deflection, drainage, fire and maintenance.
“Coastal” does not automatically specify stainless grade, panel thickness or fixing spacing. Those decisions require project-specific exposure information, structural calculations and evidence for the exact configuration proposed.

Why salt and wind must be designed together
Sea salt is a durability load, not merely a cosmetic concern. BRANZ Limited’s Metal corrosion in NZ Buildings fact sheet (version 3, April 2021) states that “Sea salt in coastal atmospheres can significantly increase the rate of corrosion of metals used in construction.” Wind-driven spray can carry chlorides onto the screen, joints and fixings. As described in FEMA’s Coastal Construction Manual, water can enter openings under wind pressure; evaporation then leaves salt crystals that retain moisture and remain corrosive.

Exposure is uneven. A sheltered inland-facing elevation, an open seafront corner, a balcony recess that traps dirt and a roof-level screen can experience very different chloride deposition and drying. Rainfall, humidity, prevailing wind, distance from breaking waves, airborne pollution, de-icing salts and the cleaning regime all affect the result. A site description such as “500 metres from the sea” is therefore useful context, but it is not a complete corrosion specification.

Wind is equally specific. Pressure and suction vary with location, building height, shape, corners, parapets, openings and the screen’s porosity. The screen must transfer those actions through its panels or mesh, supports, fixings, anchors, subframe and wall into the structure. A product certificate for a different panel size or support spacing does not prove performance on this building.
Start with a project exposure brief
Before comparing products, have the architect, facade engineer or structural engineer record the conditions that govern selection. This brief becomes the reference against which every supplier submission is checked.
- Location and jurisdiction: record the site coordinates, shoreline relationship, prevailing wind direction and the governing building and wind codes. Requirements differ by country; UK government guidance on cladding wind-loading calculations, for example, applies to England and Wales and stresses careful assessment for high-rise and exposed buildings.
- Building geometry: document height, plan shape, corners, parapets, balconies, canopies, openings and any zones where pressure coefficients change.
- Exposure: identify direct spray, salt-laden prevailing winds, sheltered recesses, splash zones, industrial pollution and de-icing salt. Note whether the screen is at roof level, beside a roadway, over a car park or near a pool.
- Screen function: define whether it is principally visual screening, solar control, fall protection, plant concealment, ventilation, privacy or a combination. Function affects openness, panel size, support arrangement and fire strategy.
- Wall and substrate: identify concrete, masonry, steel, timber or a proprietary wall system, together with insulation, membranes, cavity barriers and allowable anchor zones.
- Maintenance access: decide how the screen will be inspected, rinsed, cleaned, repaired and replaced. A finish that cannot be reached safely will not receive the maintenance its warranty may require.
Do not assign a corrosion category from a map alone. Use the site information and the selected material supplier’s evidence to establish an exposure classification with the responsible professional.
Specify the material, grade and finish precisely
Terms such as “stainless,” “marine grade” and “316” are incomplete facade specifications. The offer should state the exact alloy or grade, product form, surface finish, coating system where applicable, fabrication method, weld treatment, fastener material, warranty conditions and maintenance requirements. The chemistry of a stainless grade and the aggressiveness of the environment both matter, as explained in Outokumpu’s guide for architects.
Use corrosion categories as a design aid, not a shortcut
Outokumpu’s examples under ISO 9223 illustrate why a single coastal rule is unsafe: temperate coastal areas with low chloride deposition may be treated as C3; coastal locations without direct spray or de-icing salts as C4; some coastal or sheltered positions as C5; and extreme coastal or offshore environments as CX. These are manufacturer examples, not a classification for every shoreline site. The project team must establish the actual category and confirm that the proposed grade and finish are suitable.
Ask for evidence tied to the offered system
Request documentation that identifies the exact screen configuration rather than a generic brochure. Useful evidence includes:

| Screen pathway | Useful characteristics to investigate | Coastal questions that must be answered |
|---|---|---|
| Architectural stainless wire mesh | Open appearance, variable transparency, solar-protection potential and customizable tensioning or fastening. HAVER & BOECKER describes facade applications and notes that supports can receive pretension, wind and ice loads. | What exact grade and finish are offered? How are mesh edges terminated? What pretension is required? Are support centres, deflection limits and ice actions calculated for this panel format? |
| Solid or perforated aluminium panels | Low mass and many perforation and finish options; openness can be tuned for shade and ventilation. | Specify alloy, coating system, edge protection and repair method. Check thermal movement, galvanic contact with the subframe and pressure coefficients for the perforated pattern. |
| Laser-cut panels | Can provide a bespoke visual pattern and controlled openings. | Verify net section strength, unsupported dimensions, cut-edge treatment, vibration, drainage and replacement access. Do not transfer wind data from a different pattern or sheet thickness. |
| Fins or battens | Useful for directional solar control and a strong architectural rhythm. | Check torsion, local bending, end connections, thermal movement and the larger number of exposed fastener interfaces. |
| Expanded metal | Continuous screening with ventilation and a relatively open visual field. | Confirm strand geometry, edge framing, coating durability, snag and vibration behaviour, and how salt and dirt are washed from the expanded openings. |
| Weathering steel | Distinctive appearance where a stable patina is acceptable. | Run-off staining, persistent wetness, crevices and contact with other metals require particular scrutiny. Suitability cannot be inferred from appearance or a non-coastal project. |
| Architectural concrete systems | Massive, durable-looking screens with potentially low metal content. | Design reinforcement durability, cracking, water paths, lifting and anchorage. Confirm fire, weight and support requirements for the wall assembly. |
Apollo NZ Global’s Architectural Façade Technical Design Guide (edition 2026.2, reviewed 4 October 2026) treats these as project pathways and emphasizes confirming the exact material, structural calculations, finish, coastal evidence and wall-assembly compliance for the selected system.
Engineer wind performance for the complete assembly
Obtain calculations or test evidence for the exact screen, not merely the product family. The submission should identify panel or mesh dimensions, openness, support centres, connection details, anchors, substrate, edge zones and the design wind actions used.
What the calculation should show
- design pressure and suction for each relevant facade zone, including corners and parapets;
- load paths from screen skin or mesh through brackets, rails and anchors into the verified substrate;
- strength and serviceability checks for panels, wires, rails, brackets, bolts and welds;
- allowable deflection and the effect of movement on adjacent cladding, membranes and seals;
- fatigue, vibration or resonance checks where flexible mesh, repeated gusting or mechanically excited equipment is present;
- installation tolerances, temporary conditions and any requirement for pretensioning or staged tightening;
- drainage and ventilation details so trapped water does not turn a structural cavity into a corrosion cell.
The UK Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Government’s 7 September 2017 circular, Wind-loading calculation for cladding, is process guidance for England and Wales, not a wind value for an unspecified building. Elsewhere, use the applicable local code and have the design basis approved by the project’s qualified team.
Mesh-specific considerations
Architectural mesh can be tensioned across a facade. Its supports may receive the mesh pretension in addition to wind and ice actions. HAVER & BOECKER notes that intermediate mounts can reduce maximum substructure loads and mesh deflection in its system approach. That observation does not establish a transferable spacing rule: the mount arrangement must be calculated for the selected mesh, span, tension, edge restraint and building movement.

Resolve galvanic compatibility before ordering
Salt water makes electrical contact between dissimilar metals more consequential. Check every interface: screen or mesh, frame, brackets, bolts, washers, rivets, anchors, flashings and any concealed rails. The Building America Solution Center’s coastal-envelope guidance advises avoiding dissimilar metals together and recommends stainless fasteners within 3,000 feet of the ocean shoreline in the cited U.S. residential context.
The 3,000-foot figure is a condition attached to that recommendation—not a universal corrosion boundary, wind zone or performance guarantee. It does not make every stainless fastener suitable for this facade. The specification still needs the alloy, dimensions, head and drive, substrate engagement, load capacity, connected-metal compatibility and installation method. Use isolating washers, sleeves or coatings only when the engineer confirms that they remain effective under the expected movement, water and temperature conditions.
Require a compatibility schedule that names the metal at each joint and the separation or protection method. Include weld consumables and touch-up materials; a compatible sheet can still develop local corrosion at a poorly treated weld, cut edge or damaged coating.

Design drainage, drying and wall interfaces
A screen that sheds rain but traps salt-laden water can deteriorate faster than a more exposed screen that dries quickly. Detail positive drainage at brackets, rails, folded returns and base channels. Avoid blind pockets, horizontal ledges and sealant arrangements that block weep paths. Keep the screen’s drainage path separate from membranes and cavity barriers unless the wall-system designer has approved the connection.
Coordinate the facade screen with:
- cavity barriers and fire stopping;
- water-resistive barriers, flashings and window interfaces;
- thermal movement joints and building movement;
- lightning protection and earthing where metalwork is bonded;
- access doors, louvers, vents and emergency egress;
- cleaning anchors and safe-access equipment.
Do not let a bracket puncture a membrane without a tested or properly detailed repair. Record who owns each interface: the screen supplier, cladding contractor, waterproofing designer or structural engineer.
Use a staged selection and procurement process
- Freeze the design basis. Record jurisdiction, building geometry, exposure, screen function, fire requirements, substrate and maintenance access.
- Issue the same performance brief to each bidder. State wind pressures and suctions when available, deflection limits, panel dimensions, openness, appearance, drainage expectations and interfaces. This prevents suppliers from pricing different assumptions.
- Request a complete technical submission. Require drawings, calculations, material certificates, finish data, corrosion evidence, warranties, installation instructions and maintenance requirements.
- Check the load path independently. Have the project engineer verify panel or mesh actions, support centres, anchors, substrate capacity, edge zones and movement allowances.
- Review corrosion and galvanic details. Compare every metal, coating, weld, cut edge, separator and fastener. Reject submissions that say only “stainless” or “coastal grade.”
- Coordinate wall and fire compliance. Confirm cavity barriers, combustibility, reaction-to-fire requirements, penetrations, access and drainage with the wall-system designer.
- Inspect a representative mock-up. Use the specified grade, finish, joints, brackets, fasteners, seals and drainage. A colour sample alone cannot reveal water traps or installation tolerances.
- Approve the installation method. Set out support centres, torque or pretension values, isolation materials, edge clearances, drilling restrictions and protection against contamination by carbon-steel tools or swarf.
- Record handover information. Keep as-built drawings, material certificates, cleaning products, inspection points, warranty conditions, replacement parts and safe-access procedures.
Plan maintenance as part of the specification
Maintenance cannot compensate for an unsuitable grade or an overloaded support, but it controls salt accumulation and reveals failures early. The supplier and facade designer should define the regime for the actual site, including the cleaning method, water quality, approved detergents, rinse requirements and restrictions on abrasive tools.

Decision checklist for tender review
- Is the governing code and project wind design basis identified?
- Are pressure, suction, deflection and movement limits stated for the exact screen zones?
- Does the submission name the alloy, grade, finish, coating and fabrication treatment?
- Is the stated corrosion evidence relevant to the site’s chloride, wetting and cleaning exposure?
- Are panel or mesh dimensions, support centres, pretension and edge restraints shown?
- Does the load path include brackets, fixings, anchors and verified substrate capacity?
- Are all dissimilar-metal joints listed with isolation or protection details?
- Do shop drawings show drainage, drying, membranes, flashings and cavity barriers?
- Are fire, access, ventilation, egress and lightning-protection interfaces resolved?
- Are warranty conditions, cleaning products, inspection intervals and replacement parts documented?
- Has a representative mock-up demonstrated appearance, joints, drainage and installation tolerances?
If any answer is “not stated,” treat it as an unresolved design item rather than an assumed approval. Final material grade, panel thickness, fixing schedule, support spacing, certification and code compliance cannot be established without the project information and evidence for the selected system.
