At handoff, identify the equipment model, installed battery chemistry, approved charger and connector, then follow the current operator manual, rental provider’s instructions and your site procedure. Park and secure the machine, inspect the charging equipment and battery, charge only in a designated and protected area, and store the battery exactly as its manufacturer specifies. If the battery, cable, connector or charger is damaged or behaves abnormally, stop using the equipment, isolate the hazard as your emergency plan directs and contact the rental provider and site safety lead.
This guidance is written primarily for U.S. construction sites and rented mobile elevating work platforms (MEWPs), such as electric scissor lifts. Local fire, electrical, building and occupational-safety requirements can add controls.

Why rented electric equipment needs a deliberate charging plan
Electric construction equipment looks simple to operate, but its charging system is an engineered combination of a particular battery, battery-management system, connector, charger and machine controls. Two lifts that use similar plugs can require different charging sequences or restrictions. A charger selected only because its voltage or connector appears to match can damage the battery, defeat protective controls or create a fire and shock hazard.
Rental equipment also changes hands frequently. The operator may not know whether the machine has flooded lead-acid, AGM, gel or lithium-ion batteries, whether an optional battery pack is installed, or which charger belongs to it. Treat the handoff as a safety checkpoint rather than assuming the previous renter left a complete setup.

IPAF says its battery guidance was developed “to support owners, rental companies and operators” and covers battery use, charging, storage, inspection, maintenance and disposal. IPAF reports that more than 2.2 million MEWPs are in service worldwide in 2026; that figure covers MEWPs generally, not electric machines alone.
Start at handoff: identify the exact machine and battery
Record the equipment identity
Before moving the machine to a charging point, record the manufacturer, model, serial or fleet number and the current operator manual. Ask the rental provider to identify the installed battery type, the approved charger part or model, the charging connector and any restrictions on indoor, outdoor, overnight or unattended charging. Ask what fault codes, smells, sounds or battery conditions must be reported and who to call after hours.
Do not rely on a model family name alone. Battery options and charging arrangements can differ within a product line. A manufacturer’s end-of-day instructions typically direct operators to use an authorized charger appropriate to the machine make and model and to consult the manual.
Use the battery label and manual, not appearance
Confirm the battery chemistry from the battery label, machine documentation or rental provider. IPAF’s MEWP guidance distinguishes flooded lead-acid, AGM, gel and lithium-ion batteries. Their ventilation, inspection, maintenance and storage needs are not interchangeable.
| Battery type or system | What must be matched | What the operator should verify |
|---|---|---|
| Flooded lead-acid | Machine-approved charger and connector; charging-area controls for the battery and installation | Electrolyte and maintenance instructions, ventilation requirements, inspection schedule and any water-service procedure in the manual |
| AGM | Charger profile and connector specified for the installed battery | Whether the manual permits the planned charging location, how to inspect for damage and what storage state of charge is required |
| Gel | Charger profile and connector specified for the installed battery | Charging limits, inspection points and storage instructions for that battery option |
| Lithium-ion | The machine’s approved charger, connector and battery-management system | Manufacturer instructions for charging, enclosure or compartment position, state of charge, storage duration, temperature and fault response |
The table identifies the decisions to verify; it does not substitute for the manual. The exact limits, charge times and storage thresholds are product-specific.
Prepare the machine before connecting a charger
- Park as the manual requires. Select a stable, authorized surface and keep the machine clear of travel lanes, edges, excavations and suspended-load areas. Lower or position platforms, booms, forks or attachments as the manual directs.
- Secure against movement. Apply the parking brake or other required restraint, turn controls off and remove the key if the procedure calls for it. Chock or otherwise secure the equipment when site conditions or the manual require additional protection.
- Inspect the charging path. Examine the plug, cable, connector, strain relief, charger housing, receptacle and visible battery area. Look for cuts, crushed insulation, bent or burnt contacts, moisture, corrosion, loose parts, cracked housings, leaking electrolyte, swelling or unusual heat.
- Keep incompatible equipment out of service. Do not use a visibly damaged charger, cable or connector. Do not tape over damaged insulation, bypass a fuse or interlock, splice a cord or force a connector. Tag the equipment according to site procedure and notify the rental provider.
- Check the area. Remove combustible debris, keep ignition sources and unauthorized people away, and confirm that the receptacle and supply are suitable for the approved charger. Do not daisy-chain extension cords or use an adapter simply to make a plug fit.
A Genie manual provides a useful model-specific example by requiring daily inspection of the charging cord, cable and wires and by specifying a matching charge connection for the lithium battery it covers. That is an example of manufacturer control, not a universal rule for every rented machine.

Choose and control the charging location
Use a designated area
Charge in the site’s designated battery-charging installation, not wherever the machine happens to be parked. Mark the area, control access and protect the charger and cable from vehicle traffic, falling materials, water intrusion and other impact. Route cables so they cannot become trip hazards or be crushed by equipment.

Its text addresses batteries of the unsealed type and also contains electrolyte-handling requirements. Do not assume every clause applies identically to a sealed lithium-ion system; identify the battery and check the applicable rule and manufacturer instructions.
Apply ventilation controls that fit the battery
Ventilation requirements depend on the battery and charging installation. Lead-acid charging can produce gases, so the site may need the controls specified by the regulation, equipment manual and local fire or electrical rules. A sealed lithium-ion system has different hazards and must not automatically be treated as a flooded lead-acid battery, but it still requires the manufacturer’s charging and emergency controls.
Never charge in a confined or poorly controlled space merely because it is dry or convenient. Confirm that the location protects the machine from weather and impact while meeting the ventilation, clearance and access requirements that apply to the installed battery.
Connect and monitor the approved charger
- Confirm compatibility one more time. Match the charger to the machine make, model and battery option. Connector shape and voltage alone are not proof of compatibility.
- Inspect the connector and receptacle. They must be clean, dry and undamaged. Do not energize a wet, contaminated or visibly damaged connection.
- Follow the manual’s sequence. Some machines require the charger to be connected to the machine before the supply is energized; others specify a different order. Follow the exact sequence and any requirement to open, close or leave a battery compartment or enclosure in a particular position.
- Start charging using the approved controls. Verify the charger’s indicators or machine display show the expected charging state. Stop if an error code, alarm, unexpected heat, smell, smoke, arcing or repeated tripping occurs.
- Monitor as required. Do not defeat automatic shutoff, interlocks or battery-management protections. Whether a charge may be left unattended or overnight is a manufacturer and site-procedure decision, not a universal permission.
- Finish and disconnect in the prescribed order. Wait for the charge cycle to complete or for the manual’s required stopping condition, then disconnect as directed. Coil and store the cable so it cannot be damaged.
Never substitute a generic charger, adapter or battery based on a similar connector, nominal voltage or advertised “universal” compatibility. A model-specific manual may limit the charger, connection point, enclosure position or monitoring procedure.

Follow the manufacturer’s storage state of charge
Storage instructions can specify a target state of charge, whether the machine should be disconnected, how often the battery must be checked and the maximum storage duration. Apply those instructions to the exact battery option. The available guidance does not establish one state-of-charge percentage or one storage interval for all rented equipment.

Use a dry, cool, protected location
OSHA recommends storing lithium-ion batteries in a dry, cool location and following the manufacturer’s storage, use, charging and maintenance instructions. “Cool” is not a single universal temperature limit in the available guidance. Use the temperature range and condensation controls stated by the manufacturer; keep the battery away from direct sun, heaters, hot exhaust, welding, open flame and areas where water or chemicals can reach it.
Do not place a battery or charger where it can be struck by forklifts, dropped materials or moving attachments. Preserve access for inspection and emergency response. Keep storage areas orderly so a damaged battery can be identified rather than hidden under covers or materials.
Account for long rental pauses
For a weekend, weather shutdown or extended project pause, ask the rental provider for the approved long-term-storage procedure. It may include a particular state of charge, removing the charger, periodic inspection or a requirement to return the machine rather than store it on site. Record the date of the last inspection and any fault indication so the next operator does not inherit an unexplained condition.

Conditions that require a stop
- Swelling, deformation, cracking, leakage, corrosion or exposed conductors
- Smoke, hissing, popping, unusual odor or rapidly increasing temperature
- Repeated charger trips, failure to begin or finish charging, unexpected fault codes or a damaged connector
- A machine that loses power unusually quickly or behaves differently after charging
- Evidence of impact, water intrusion, overheating or a dropped battery
Do not open, repair, puncture, cool, move or disassemble a suspect battery unless the manufacturer’s emergency procedure and trained responders specifically require it. Keep workers away, stop charging if it can be done without entering danger, and isolate the area according to the site emergency action plan. Notify the rental provider and the site safety lead.
Build battery incidents into the emergency plan
OSHA recommends training workers to recognize defective, damaged or failing lithium-powered devices and batteries and incorporating lithium-battery incident response into the emergency action plan using manufacturer instructions and relevant fire guidance. The correct response can depend on the battery, machine, location and stage of failure, so do not invent one firefighting method for every product.
Ensure supervisors know the emergency contact route, evacuation or exclusion-zone procedure, first-aid arrangements, fire-department notification process and reporting requirements. Only personnel trained and equipped for the identified hazard should attempt emergency intervention.

What U.S. OSHA rules do—and do not—say
OSHA states: “While there is not a specific OSHA standard for lithium-ion batteries, many OSHA standards may apply, as well as the General Duty Clause, Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970.” This does not mean lithium-ion charging is unregulated. Employers must identify applicable standards, address recognized hazards and follow the equipment manufacturer’s instructions.

It includes requirements concerning designated charging areas, ventilation, protection of charging apparatus from damage and electrolyte handling for the battery systems covered by the rule. Because its text addresses batteries of the unsealed type, employers should not copy lead-acid procedures onto every sealed lithium-ion machine without checking applicability.
State plans, local fire codes, electrical rules, property-owner requirements and rental-company procedures may impose additional controls. This article does not determine those local requirements. The competent person or safety manager should verify them before establishing a charging station.

Common shortcuts that create avoidable risk
“The plug fits, so the charger is safe.”
Connector fit does not establish electrical compatibility, charge profile or communication with the battery-management system. Use only the charger identified for the machine and battery.
“Every electric lift can charge in the same place.”
Charging locations must account for traffic protection, ventilation, weather, access and the battery type. A location suitable for one installation may not satisfy another.
“A sealed battery needs no inspection.”
Sealed does not mean damage-proof or maintenance-free. Inspect the battery area, cable and connector, and follow the manual’s inspection and fault procedures.

Whether charging may be unattended depends on the machine instructions, charger controls, site procedure and applicable rules. Obtain a clear answer from the rental provider and manual.
“A damaged battery can be returned with the machine.”
A damaged or failing battery requires immediate reporting and controlled handling. Do not send it back through ordinary logistics without the rental provider’s instructions.
Illustrative equipment examples and limits
Manufacturer documentation shows why a single recipe is unsafe. The cited Genie manual specifies a matching charge connection and restrictions for the lithium battery covered by that manual, including daily charging-cord, cable and wire inspection. Those directions apply to that covered machine, not automatically to another lift.

Decision path for any rented electric machine
- Identify: confirm model, battery chemistry, charger and connector.
- Read: obtain the current operator manual and rental instructions.
- Prepare: park, secure, inspect and clear the designated charging area.
- Match controls: apply ventilation, impact protection, access control and storage conditions appropriate to the battery and local rules.
- Charge: use the approved charger and exact connection sequence; monitor for normal indications.
- Store: meet the specified state of charge, temperature, disconnection and inspection requirements.
- Escalate: stop and report any damage, heat, odor, smoke, leak, fault or abnormal charging behavior.
This process works across rented scissor lifts and other electric construction equipment because it begins with the machine’s actual configuration rather than assuming every battery or charger behaves alike.
Frequently Asked Questions
How should I charge and store a rented electric scissor lift safely?
Confirm the lift model, battery type and approved charger with the rental provider; park and secure it; inspect the charging equipment and battery; charge only in the designated, protected area using the manual’s connection sequence; then store it in the dry, cool location and state of charge specified by the manufacturer. Stop and report any damage, heat, odor, smoke or fault.
Can I use a charger with the same voltage and plug as the rental machine?
No. Voltage and connector appearance do not prove compatibility. Use only the charger approved for that make, model and battery option.
What should I do if a rented battery is swollen, hot or smoking?
Stop charging if it is safe to do so, keep people away, follow the site emergency plan and manufacturer directions, and contact the rental provider and site safety lead. Do not improvise repairs or a universal firefighting method.
