To change a Samsung refrigerator water filter, first confirm the replacement cartridge matches your fridge, then remove the old filter, install and lock the new one, flush the water system, and reset the filter indicator. Filter type, location, and reset controls vary by model, so use your refrigerator’s manual if its housing or controls differ from the steps below.
1. Identify the correct replacement filter
Samsung filter types and locations vary by refrigerator model. Before buying, check the part number printed on the existing cartridge or look up your refrigerator’s model number using Samsung’s compatibility guidance. Samsung’s US guide covers HAF-CIN, HAF-QIN, and HAFCU1 filters; that list is not universal to every model or market.

Do not choose a cartridge by appearance alone. Confirm it is compatible with your exact refrigerator, since a filter that does not fit or seal correctly can cause problems. Samsung recommends genuine filters and warns that filters from other manufacturers may damage the fridge or filter housing, or break and leave pieces inside it: Samsung’s filter-fit troubleshooting guidance.

- Turn off the water supply. Samsung’s US replacement instructions advise shutting off the supply before removing the old cartridge. Check your refrigerator manual for the filter’s location and access method.
- Unlock and remove the old filter. For HAF-CIN and HAF-QIN cartridges, open the filter cover, rotate the cartridge counterclockwise to unlock it, and pull it out. For HAFCU1, turn left to unlock. Other filter types may use a different method.
- Prepare the replacement. Confirm the part number matches your refrigerator and remove the protective cap from the new cartridge.
- Insert and lock it. Align the cartridge with the housing and turn it until it locks. Samsung’s instructions describe clockwise rotation to secure HAF-CIN and HAF-QIN filters; HAFCU1 turns right to secure. Do not force a cartridge that will not align or lock.
- Restore the water supply. Check around the filter housing for leaks after turning the supply back on.
These directions apply to the cartridge types named above. For a different housing, consult the instructions for your refrigerator model or Samsung Canada’s model-specific replacement guidance.

3. Flush the system after installation
Dispense water after fitting the new cartridge to clear air and carbon particles from the system. Samsung’s regional instructions differ: its Canada guide says to flush for about seven minutes or dispense 10–12 large glasses, while its UK guide specifies 10 litres or six to seven minutes. These are manufacturer instructions for their respective guidance; follow the directions for your refrigerator and market rather than assuming one quantity applies to every model.
4. Reset the filter reminder
Reset the indicator after installing the new cartridge. The control or menu depends on the refrigerator model. Samsung’s US guide lists these approaches:

Samsung UK also describes a three-second hold for certain controls, but the same button or menu does not apply to every refrigerator. If you cannot find the listed option, check the manual for your model.

5. Troubleshoot common problems
The filter will not lock
- Check that the protective cap has been removed.
- Align the cartridge with the housing and follow the turn direction for that filter type.
- Confirm the replacement part number matches the refrigerator.
Water leaks around the filter
Remove and reinstall the cartridge, making sure it is fully locked. If a leak continues and the O-ring is damaged, Samsung Canada advises replacing the cartridge.

Water tastes unusual or flow is slow
For unusual taste or smell, Samsung Canada recommends flushing more water. If flow is slow, check that the cartridge is installed properly. If the issue persists, use the troubleshooting guidance for your refrigerator model.
The indicator does not reset
Reset controls vary by model. Check the refrigerator manual if the button or touchscreen path above does not match your control panel.

When should you change the filter?
Samsung recommends replacing the water filter every six months. The indicator is a timer reminder, not a measurement of filter condition; water quality and how much you use the dispenser can affect when replacement is needed. Samsung Canada’s filter guidance discusses those factors.
