A classic jack-o’-lantern is easiest to make when you treat it like a small hands-on project: choose a sound pumpkin, clean and stabilize it, plan the opening, scoop it out, then let an adult make the cuts. Finish with a flameless light and carve close to the day you plan to display it.

1. Choose a pumpkin worth carving
Look for a pumpkin that is firm, bright-colored, and hard-rinded, with no cracks, soft spots, bruises, or other visible damage. A large carving pumpkin gives you a broad canvas for a traditional face. It is primarily a decoration, though; smaller pie pumpkins are generally the better choice for baking.

If you want roasted seeds, separate that food task from the decoration: use seeds from a sound, freshly opened pumpkin—not from a jack-o’-lantern that has been sitting outside.

2. Set out the supplies
- A pumpkin
- Marker or pen
- Spoon, scraper, or pumpkin-cleaning tool
- Purpose-made pumpkin carving kit, or another tool appropriate to the design and the adult using it
- Towels and a clean, protected, stable work surface
- Optional paper template and tape
- Battery-operated flameless pumpkin light
A kit can be useful because it keeps the carving tools and scraper together. Choose tools that suit the planned design; a simple, large-featured face needs less precision than a detailed pattern. If a kit includes a light with button-cell batteries, check that the battery compartment is securely fastened and review current product-safety information before use.
3. Wash the pumpkin and prepare the work area
Wash your hands. Before drawing or cutting, rinse the intact pumpkin thoroughly under plain running water. Scrub its firm surface with a clean produce brush, then dry it with a clean cloth or paper towel. Wash hands again after handling the pumpkin.
Do not use soap, detergent, bleach, or a commercial produce wash. Plain running water is the recommended approach for intact produce.

Set the pumpkin on a clean, stable surface that will not wobble. Put towels nearby: pulp makes hands, tools, and the outside of the pumpkin slippery and sticky. Keep sharp tools out of children’s hands. Children can take part in the design and cleanup, but the cutting is an adult job.
4. Decide where the opening belongs, then draw the face
Choose the opening before you sketch the design:
- Top: the familiar lid arrangement.
- Bottom: useful when you want to set the pumpkin over a light.
- Side: helpful when the design or stem makes another location more practical.
Draw the eyes, nose, and mouth directly on the skin with a marker. For a first pumpkin, use larger openings and leave plenty of pumpkin between features; that is more forgiving than thin, intricate cutouts.

Using a template? Tape it flat against the pumpkin and transfer the design with closely spaced small marks around the outlines. Remove the paper and connect or follow those marks as you carve.
5. Open, scoop, and scrape
An adult should cut the opening. Remove the lid or section, then use a spoon or scraper to pull out the seeds and fibrous strands. Scrape the inner wall behind the face until it is reasonably smooth and easier to cut through.

Optional: save the seeds
Pick the seeds out of the pulp, rinse away clinging fibers, and dry them before roasting. For a tested method and food-safety details, follow an extension-service seed-roasting recipe. Treat this as a fresh food-preparation project; do not save seeds from a pumpkin that has already been displayed carved outdoors.

6. Carve the design
Only begin cutting once the pumpkin is stable and the interior is cleaned. Have the adult cut along the marked lines, keeping every hand clear of the tool’s path. Work deliberately rather than trying to finish the face in one fast pass.

- An adult handles the opening and all sharp carving tools.
After the last cut, gently press out the sections from inside if needed. Remove any loose bits, then wipe the exterior clean.
7. Light the jack-o’-lantern
Place a battery-operated candle, tap light, glow stick, or other flameless light inside the pumpkin. A bottom opening can make positioning a light especially simple, but any opening arrangement can work if the pumpkin remains stable.

Avoid relying on a candle when a flameless option will do. Beyond the open-flame concern, candle heat may make the pumpkin deteriorate faster. If you use any battery-powered product, follow its instructions and keep button-cell batteries inaccessible to children.
8. Display it at the right time
Carve as close as practical to your intended display date, especially during warm weather. Once cut, a jack-o’-lantern can mold and collapse more quickly in heat, and no single shelf-life promise fits every pumpkin or climate.
Place it on a stable, protected surface away from conditions that speed deterioration. Check it regularly. Discard the pumpkin when it is visibly spoiled, moldy, collapsing, or otherwise no longer suitable for display.
