Keep a flowering potted mum in a bright, cool spot, check its soil often, and water when the surface feels dry. Let excess water drain fully instead of leaving the pot in a decorative sleeve or saucer of water. These steps can help the flowers last for several weeks, but many florist mums are intended for temporary indoor display rather than reliable year-round houseplants.
Where to place an indoor mum
Set a flowering florist mum near a bright window, but out of direct sunlight. Iowa State University Extension recommends indoor temperatures of 60–70°F for these plants. That is a target range, not a requirement every home can maintain; a comfortably cool, bright location is the practical goal. Iowa State’s indoor mum guidance gives the placement and temperature recommendations.

Cool nights can help flowers develop and last longer. University of New Hampshire Extension recommends night temperatures of 60–65°F, while University of Missouri Extension describes daytime temperatures 10–15°F warmer than nighttime temperatures. Treat these as useful conditions rather than a precise guarantee for every cultivar or home. UNH’s flowering gift-plant guidance and Missouri’s care guide discuss temperature and bloom.

Use the soil, not a calendar, to decide when to water. Check the surface frequently; when it feels dry to the touch, water thoroughly until water runs from the bottom of the pot. If the nursery pot is inside foil or a decorative cover, remove it while watering and let the pot drain before putting it back. Iowa State Extension recommends this method for flowering mums.

- Do not let the soil dry so far that the plant wilts.
- Do not leave the pot standing in water after it drains.
- Check more often if the room is warm and dry, but do not assume that means watering on a fixed daily schedule.
Chrysanthemums need enough water to avoid wilting, but persistently wet conditions are not the answer. UNH Extension notes that standing drainage water can encourage fungal disease and insect problems in gift plants generally. UNH’s care guidance also advises checking the soil rather than overwatering.
How to help the flowers last
If you are choosing a plant, look for healthy foliage and partly opened buds rather than one whose flowers are already fully open. UNH Extension says partly opened buds and cool nights of 60–65°F can help flowers reach full color and prolong the display. Missouri Extension estimates that a properly cared-for flowering potted plant may remain attractive for several weeks to about a month; that is an estimate, not a guaranteed lifespan for every mum. UNH Extension and Missouri Extension provide these recommendations.

The flowering potted mum sold for indoor display is often a tender florist variety. Garden mums are a distinct category and are generally hardier, though actual winter survival depends on the cultivar and local climate. Iowa State’s statement that florist mums are not winter-hardy applies to Iowa; it should not be read as a universal hardiness rating for every mum in every region. What to do when the flowers fade
The simplest option: compost the plant
If you bought the mum for its flowers, composting it after bloom is a reasonable choice. Iowa State recommends this for florist mums and notes that these flowering potted types are not winter-hardy in Iowa. Your results outdoors may differ with variety and region, so do not assume an indoor florist mum will behave like a locally hardy garden mum. Iowa State Extension explains its recommendation and Iowa-specific context.
The more demanding option: attempt a rebloom
Mums respond to day length: flowering is associated with short days and long nights. Keeping a florist mum for another flowering season is possible to attempt, but it takes sustained seasonal care and may not produce the compact, full appearance of a greenhouse-grown plant. Iowa State describes the need for a long, uninterrupted dark period; ordinary household or outdoor lighting during the night can interfere with flowering in some growing situations. Iowa State’s chrysanthemum-growing guide explains the short-day response.

Missouri Extension’s older, region-specific approach illustrates the work involved: separate plants that share a pot, repot them individually, grow them outdoors in summer sun, feed them during that growth period, and pinch shoots before its mid-August cutoff. That calendar is Missouri guidance, not a universal schedule. Night lighting can disrupt flowering before buds show color; Missouri notes it ceases to matter once buds begin opening. The extension also cautions that home-forced plants may not look as perfect as greenhouse-grown mums. See Missouri Extension’s guide.

Start by checking soil moisture and whether the pot can drain. A wilted plant may need water, but a pot sitting in collected water can also signal a drainage problem. Adjust watering according to the soil rather than repeating it automatically.

If you see symptoms or pests, inspect the foliage instead of assuming a particular problem is inevitable indoors. UC Statewide Integrated Pest Management lists aphids, mites, thrips, and whiteflies among possible chrysanthemum pests, and leaf spots, rots, and powdery mildew among possible diseases. Its coverage includes landscape and production settings as well as home contexts, so the list is not a prediction that any one issue will occur on a houseplant. UC IPM’s chrysanthemum overview provides the broader list.
