No single CPU, memory size, disk layout, or network design is right for all three.
1. Define the job before buying parts
A server is not a universal parts list. The right build depends on whether you need a general-purpose Linux machine, a virtualization host, a network-attached storage system, or a specialized computer for a demanding workload.

Write the first milestone in one sentence, such as: Store and back up project documents for five users, run several isolated services on one physical host, or provide shared storage for a media library. That sentence determines the platform, storage layout, memory requirement, network design, and recovery plan.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

|---|---|---|---|
| Websites, file sharing, development, automation, databases, or a few containers | Ubuntu Server | Reliable CPU, adequate RAM, SSD storage, wired networking, and simple backups | Installing a complex virtualization or storage platform when a straightforward Linux server would be easier to maintain |
| Several isolated operating systems or services on one machine | Proxmox VE | CPU virtualization support, memory for the host and every guest, fast storage, and suitable networking | Counting only the RAM assigned to virtual machines and forgetting the host, cache, and growth |
| Shared files, backups, media libraries, and managed storage pools | TrueNAS | Drive bays, deliberate pool design, RAM, a suitable boot device, and a separate backup strategy | Buying several disks without deciding the pool layout or confusing redundancy with backup |
| Game hosting, media transcoding, security appliances, or machine learning | Workload-specific platform | Potentially a GPU, high-core-count CPU, large memory capacity, or multiple fast network interfaces | Assuming that hardware suitable for a file server will also suit transcoding or machine learning |
For a small construction business, the workload might include project files, job-site photos, accounting exports, internal applications, automated backups, or a development environment. A server storing critical project data needs a stronger recovery plan than one used only for testing.

2. Choose the platform
Ubuntu Server: the flexible general-purpose option
Ubuntu Server is usually the most direct starting point when one machine will run a manageable set of Linux services. It can host websites, file-sharing software, databases, automation tools, development environments, and containers without requiring a virtual-machine layer.
For Ubuntu 24.04 on amd64, the documented installation minimum is 1.5 GB of RAM and 5 GB of storage; the installation tutorial recommends at least 2 GB of RAM and 5 GB of disk. Those figures describe an installation baseline, not a comfortable specification for a busy server. Applications, databases, container images, logs, filesystem cache, and future growth all need additional capacity. Check the current Ubuntu Server system requirements before finalizing a build.
Proxmox VE: the virtualization-first option
Choose Proxmox VE when the main purpose is to run multiple virtual machines or containers on one physical host. It lets you separate services into guests, which can simplify testing, migration, snapshots, and administration, but it also adds host-level complexity.

The processor must expose Intel VT-x or AMD-V virtualization features. PCIe passthrough, such as assigning a GPU or another device directly to a guest, additionally requires the relevant IOMMU support—Intel VT-d or AMD-d—and compatible motherboard firmware. The host needs memory of its own in addition to the memory assigned to guests.
Proxmox recommends fast and redundant storage. Its documented storage choices include hardware RAID with battery-protected write cache or non-RAID approaches such as ZFS, depending on the deployment. Review the current Proxmox VE requirements because supported storage and networking details matter more as the host becomes a production system.
TrueNAS: the storage-first option
Choose TrueNAS when shared storage and a managed storage pool are the main objectives. TrueNAS is not simply Ubuntu with a few disks attached; its design depends on deliberate choices about pool layout, disk replacement, memory, boot media, encryption, and data protection.
The current TrueNAS hardware guidance lists an x86_64 processor, 8 GB of memory, a 20 GB SSD boot device, and two identically sized devices for a single storage pool as baseline requirements. More RAM may be needed for additional drives, more clients, virtual machines, directory services, or deduplication. ECC memory is strongly recommended as an additional defense against memory errors, but ECC works only when the selected processor, motherboard chipset, and memory modules support it together. The official TrueNAS getting-started documentation should take precedence over a generic parts list.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUse a suitable SSD-based boot device for TrueNAS. A generic USB stick may be appropriate as temporary installer media, but TrueNAS warns that USB drives and SATA DOMs vary too widely in quality for the sustained write activity of a boot pool.
A quick decision rule
- Choose Ubuntu Server if you want one flexible Linux system and are comfortable installing and updating services yourself.
- Choose Proxmox VE if isolation between several operating systems or applications is the primary requirement.
- Choose TrueNAS if shared storage, pools, and storage administration are the primary requirement.
- Choose a specialized design only after measuring the actual requirements of the GPU, transcoding, game, security, or machine-learning workload.
3. Select compatible hardware
Compatibility is more important than brand names. Before ordering anything, create a compatibility sheet containing the exact motherboard model, processor, memory type, number and type of drives, expansion cards, power supply, case, and network hardware.
CPU and motherboard
- Select a 64-bit Intel or AMD processor supported by the chosen platform.
- For Proxmox, confirm that the processor exposes Intel VT-x or AMD-V in firmware. If you need device passthrough, confirm VT-d or AMD-d support in the processor and motherboard.
- Check the motherboard’s supported memory type, maximum capacity, number of memory channels, M.2 and SATA connectors, PCIe slots, onboard network hardware, and firmware options.
- Confirm that the board has enough physical connectors for the planned data drives. A storage design that requires eight drives cannot be built around a board and case that support only four.
- If ECC is important, verify support across the CPU, motherboard chipset, and memory modules. The presence of an ECC label on the memory alone does not guarantee that error correction will operate.
Memory
Size memory for the complete system rather than for the operating system alone. The calculation needs to include the host OS, applications, containers, virtual machines, filesystem cache, and a reasonable amount of headroom.
Ubuntu’s low installation minimum is not a recommendation for a multi-service production server. Proxmox needs memory for the host and every guest. TrueNAS starts at 8 GB and calls for more as storage, client count, virtual machines, directory services, or deduplication requirements increase.
For a simple Ubuntu file or automation server, capacity and stability may matter more than ECC. For a storage server holding irreplaceable business data, ECC can be a sensible additional safeguard when the entire platform supports it. It is not a universal requirement for every server build.

Storage: separate the decisions
Decide separately how the operating system will boot, where applications will run, where data will live, and where backups will go.
| Storage role | Typical design concern |
|---|---|
| Operating-system volume | An SSD is a sensible choice for boot and application responsiveness. Keep the installation target unambiguous. |
| Application or virtualization storage | Proxmox benefits from fast, redundant storage, especially when several guests perform simultaneous reads and writes. |
| Bulk data storage | TrueNAS requires a planned pool layout. Capacity, redundancy, drive count, replacement procedure, and expansion limits should be decided before creating the pool. |
| Backup storage | It must be independent enough to survive accidental deletion, ransomware, a failed update, or loss of the main server. A second partition in the same machine is not an adequate backup. |
TrueNAS’s baseline calls for a 20 GB SSD boot device and two identically sized devices for a single storage pool. Do not treat that minimum as a complete business backup system. Redundant storage can keep a service available after some drive failures; it does not protect against deletion, corruption, fire, theft, or an administrator applying the wrong change.
Network hardware
Use wired Ethernet for installation and routine administration. Wi-Fi may be convenient for a temporary setup, but a fixed server is easier to troubleshoot and more predictable over a wired connection.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
A single gigabit interface may be sufficient for a small Ubuntu server. A production-oriented Proxmox host may benefit from redundant gigabit interfaces, while separate interfaces may be useful for management, storage, virtual-machine traffic, or public services. The correct NIC count depends on the design; do not buy multiple ports merely because more is always better.
Case, cooling, power, and uptime
- The case must fit the motherboard, power supply, expansion cards, cooling system, and every planned drive.
- Plan airflow for continuous operation rather than short desktop workloads. Confirm that drive temperatures and fan placement will remain reasonable under sustained activity.
- Choose a power supply with headroom for the processor, drives, fans, and any GPU or accelerator. Account for startup power from multiple disks.
- A UPS can provide short-term power protection and permit an orderly shutdown, but it does not replace backups or redundant storage.
- A rackmount chassis, 10 GbE network, discrete GPU, ZFS, or ECC memory is not automatically necessary. Each should follow from the workload and platform.
4. Assemble and check the machine
Assemble the hardware with the system disconnected from mains power and follow the manuals for the particular board, processor, cooler, memory kit, case, and drives. The exact physical sequence varies, but the following order reduces rework:
- Install the processor and cooler according to the motherboard and cooler instructions.
- Install memory in the board’s recommended slots, particularly when using two or more channels.
- Install the motherboard on the correct case standoffs; an incorrectly placed standoff can damage the board.
- Fit the power supply and connect the motherboard, processor, drive, and expansion-card power leads.
- Install the boot SSD and data drives, labeling cables so that drive identity remains clear.
- Install any network or storage controller cards and confirm that the case provides adequate clearance and airflow.
- Check fan connections, front-panel connectors, cable clearance, and that no loose screw is inside the case.
- Power on with only the hardware needed for the first POST check. Confirm that the system detects the processor, memory, boot device, and network interface.
Enter the firmware setup and confirm UEFI boot mode, the intended boot order, memory capacity, storage detection, and virtualization or IOMMU options when required. Update firmware only when there is a reason and only with the procedure supplied by the motherboard manufacturer; a failed firmware update can make an otherwise functional system unusable.
5. Create installation media safely
- Download the installer image for the selected platform from its official project website. If the project publishes checksums or signatures, verify the download before using it.
- Use a separate computer to write the image to a bootable USB flash drive.
- Back up any data on the new server and on the computer used to prepare the installer. Writing an image normally erases the selected USB device.
- Label the installer and keep unrelated drives disconnected or clearly identified when practical.
- Enter the new server’s firmware boot menu and start from the installer.
The USB device is temporary installation media. Do not infer that a generic USB stick is suitable as a permanent TrueNAS boot device; TrueNAS specifically cautions against relying on low-quality USB drives or SATA DOMs for the boot pool.
Ubuntu’s official installation flow covers backing up existing data, downloading the Server ISO, creating bootable USB media, selecting the target disk, creating the initial user, and restarting into the installed system. The Proxmox and TrueNAS installers use different screens and assumptions, so Ubuntu’s screens should not be presented as universal instructions.
6. Install the selected platform
Use this sequence regardless of platform, adapting the screens to the product:
- Record the intended role and storage layout before clicking through the installer.
- Confirm that the installer has booted from the expected USB device.
- Identify the installation target by model and capacity, not only by a device name such as
sdaornvme0n1. - Disconnect unrelated disks when practical. Selecting the wrong disk can destroy existing data.
- Set a meaningful hostname, such as
fileserver,build-host, ornas01. - Create a named administrative user. Routine remote administration should not depend on direct root login.
- Configure the wired network, or record the address assigned by DHCP so that the server can be found after reboot.
- Install only the base platform and services needed for the first milestone.
- Reboot, remove the installer, and verify local login before changing remote-access settings.
Platform-specific installation notes
Ubuntu Server: Install to the intended OS disk, configure the initial user and hostname, and leave application data as a separate storage decision where practical. A general-purpose Ubuntu installation gives you flexibility, but that flexibility also means you are responsible for service configuration, permissions, updates, and backups.
Proxmox VE: Treat the machine as a virtualization host. Decide where virtual-machine disks, container storage, backups, and management traffic will live before filling the host with guests. Do not allocate all memory or storage to the first virtual machine; retain capacity for the host and future maintenance.
Recommended Free Tools
TrueNAS: Install to the suitable SSD boot device, not to a data disk that will later be placed in the storage pool. After installation, create the pool only after deciding its redundancy layout, usable-capacity target, encryption-key handling, replacement process, and backup destination.

7. Perform the first security pass
A fresh installation is not a finished server. Complete the basic security work before exposing a service to users or the Internet.
Create a normal administrative path
On Ubuntu, the installer normally creates an initial user. If another administrator is needed, create a named account and grant only the required administrative access:
sudo adduser admin
sudo usermod -aG sudo admin
Use sudo for individual privileged commands. Avoid making direct root login part of normal remote administration.
Configure SSH carefully
Install OpenSSH only when remote administration requires it. SSH encrypts the connection, but a configuration error can lock you out. First create and test key-based access from the management computer:
ssh-keygen -t ed25519
ssh-copy-id admin@SERVER_IP
ssh admin@SERVER_IP
Do not disable password authentication until key login works in a second terminal. After confirming access, create a small drop-in configuration file such as /etc/ssh/sshd_config.d/99-hardening.conf:
PermitRootLogin no
PasswordAuthentication no
AllowUsers admin
Replace admin with the actual account or accounts allowed to connect. Validate the syntax before reloading SSH:
sudo sshd -t
sudo systemctl reload ssh
Keep an existing session open while testing a new one. If the new session fails, use the open session or the local console to correct the configuration.

Allow only the ports required by the services you have actually installed. For a basic Ubuntu host, UFW can provide a starting point:
sudo apt update
sudo apt install ufw
sudo ufw default deny incoming
sudo ufw default allow outgoing
sudo ufw allow from 192.168.1.0/24 to any port 22 proto tcp
sudo ufw enable
sudo ufw status verbose
Replace 192.168.1.0/24 with the trusted management network, or use a narrower administrative policy. Do not open SSH, NAS shares, Docker-published ports, or management panels to the public Internet simply because the service is working.
Ubuntu’s security guidance emphasizes least privilege, firewalls, AppArmor, SSH, and regular updates. Keep AppArmor enabled unless you have a specific, documented reason to change a profile.
Apply updates and understand automatic updates
sudo apt update
sudo apt full-upgrade
Current Ubuntu Server installations normally include the unattended-upgrades mechanism, which generally applies security updates daily. Review which repositories and update classes are permitted and decide how the server will handle updates that require a reboot. Automatic updates reduce the window of exposure, but they do not replace testing, monitoring, or a recovery procedure.
8. Add services one at a time
Before installing a large application stack, verify the base system:

- The hostname, clock, and network address are correct.
- Updates complete without errors.
- Storage is mounted where expected.
- Logs are readable and the system has no failed services.
- Remote administration works with the intended account and key.
Then add one service at a time. For every service, document its listening ports, data directory, service account, configuration files, dependencies, update procedure, and backup method. This makes it possible to identify which change caused a failure.
Using Docker
Docker Engine can be a practical choice for containerized applications on supported Ubuntu releases. Follow the official Docker Ubuntu installation instructions rather than copying an old third-party repository command.
Container networking is part of the security design. Docker’s published ports can bypass some firewall expectations, so do not assume that enabling the host firewall automatically enforces the policy you intended. Review every published port, bind services to the appropriate interface, and keep databases and administration endpoints private unless there is a specific reason to expose them.
For a construction office, add a file service, project application, monitoring system, or automation tool only after deciding who may access it and how its data will be restored. Convenience is not a substitute for access control.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.9. Build storage and backups deliberately
Ubuntu storage
For separate application or data disks, identify the device and filesystem before mounting it:
lsblk -f
sudo blkid
df -h
Use stable filesystem identifiers such as UUIDs in /etc/fstab rather than assuming a disk will always receive the same device name. Test the mount configuration before rebooting. Never format a disk until its model, capacity, and intended role have been confirmed.
Proxmox storage
Keep guest disks, ISO images, snapshots, and backups in a storage design that matches the expected workload. A snapshot can help recover from a bad change, but it is not an independent backup if it remains on the same failed host or storage pool. Document how to rebuild the host and re-create each guest if the boot disk fails.
TrueNAS pools
Before creating a pool, decide how much usable capacity you need, how many disk failures the layout should tolerate, how a failed drive will be replaced, and how the pool will be backed up. Record the pool layout, encryption keys, configuration backup location, and scrub procedure.
Two identical devices are the baseline for a single TrueNAS storage pool, but the best redundancy layout depends on the number of drives, capacity, performance, and failure-tolerance target. Do not select a layout merely because it provides the largest displayed capacity.
Backups and recovery
At least one backup should not be continuously exposed to the server. Backups should cover both data and the information needed to rebuild the service: configuration files, container definitions, virtual-machine definitions, encryption keys, user lists, and documented network settings.
Test restoration before trusting the server with important project data. A useful recovery test answers these questions:
- Can you retrieve a single accidentally deleted file?
- Can you restore a complete application or shared folder to a clean system?
- Can you rebuild the Ubuntu host, Proxmox host, or TrueNAS configuration if the boot device dies?
- Can you access encrypted data if the original administrator is unavailable?
- How long does recovery take, and is that acceptable for the business?
RAID, ZFS redundancy, snapshots, and a UPS can all improve resilience or reduce downtime, but none is a complete backup. A successful server build is measured by recoverability, not only by whether it stays online during one disk failure.

10. Monitor and verify the finished server
Run a basic health check after installation, after major changes, and after the first recovery test:
hostnamectl
ip addr
lsblk -f
df -h
free -h
systemctl --failed
journalctl -p warning -b
Also check the platform’s storage-health information. For a disk-based system, review SMART data using an appropriate tool; for TrueNAS, monitor pool health and schedule scrubs according to the platform’s guidance. For Proxmox, watch host memory, guest allocation, storage latency, and backup completion rather than relying only on CPU utilization.
Confirm that:
- The server reboots into the intended platform without the installer USB attached.
- All intended drives are visible and assigned to the correct role.
- The network address is documented and administration is possible from the trusted network.
- The firewall exposes only required services.
- Logs do not show repeated disk, memory, network, or service errors.
- Backups complete and a test restore has succeeded.
- The shutdown behavior of the UPS, if installed, has been tested.
11. Troubleshoot by symptom
The machine does not boot
- Return to the firmware and confirm that the boot device is detected.
- Check UEFI boot order and remove the installer USB after installation.
- Reseat memory and power connectors with the system unplugged.
- Disconnect optional expansion cards and extra drives temporarily to isolate the fault.
- Use the motherboard’s diagnostic indicators and manual rather than guessing at parts.
The installer shows the wrong disk
Stop before partitioning. Compare the disk model and capacity with your written plan. Disconnect unrelated disks where practical and start again. A device name alone is not sufficient identification on a multi-drive system.

A container is reachable from the wrong network
Review Docker’s published ports and interface bindings. A port published by a container may not behave as expected under a simple UFW rule. Remove unnecessary port publications and place administration or database services on a private network.
12. Workload-specific shopping checklist
For a general Ubuntu Server
- 64-bit Intel or AMD processor and compatible motherboard
- Enough RAM for the OS, services, cache, and growth—not merely the installation minimum
- SSD for the operating system and applications
- Separate data storage when the workload or backup design calls for it
- Wired Ethernet
- Case with adequate drive capacity and airflow
- Power supply with headroom
- Optional UPS
- bootable USB flash drive for temporary installation media
For a Proxmox VE host
- 64-bit CPU with Intel VT-x or AMD-V enabled
- VT-d or AMD-d and IOMMU support if PCIe passthrough is required
- Memory reserved for the host as well as every guest
- Fast, redundant storage appropriate to the guest workload
- Enough drive bays and network interfaces for the planned design
- Documented guest backups and a host-rebuild procedure
For a TrueNAS storage server
- x86_64 processor
- At least 8 GB of memory as the documented baseline, with more for additional features and workloads
- 20 GB SSD boot device
- Two identically sized devices at minimum for a single storage pool
- Enough drive bays, cooling, and power capacity for the completed pool
- ECC memory only when the selected CPU, board, and modules support it together
- Separate backup storage and documented encryption-key recovery
Do not buy exact models until you know the chassis dimensions, motherboard connectors, drive-bay count, interface type, capacity target, workload, and budget. There is no universally correct CPU, NAS drive, NIC, memory kit, GPU, or rackmount chassis.
Bottom line
Build the server around its job: Ubuntu Server is the broadest general-purpose starting point, Proxmox VE is the clearest virtualization path, and TrueNAS is the storage-focused choice. Check compatibility before buying, install to the correct disk, secure remote access before exposing services, add applications incrementally, and test restoration. Expensive hardware cannot compensate for an unsuitable platform, an unmanaged storage pool, or backups that have never been restored.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best server platform for a beginner?
There is no single best configuration. Use Ubuntu Server for general-purpose Linux services, Proxmox VE for multiple virtual machines or containers, and TrueNAS when shared storage and a managed pool are the main purpose. The CPU, memory, storage, network interfaces, and case should then be selected for that workload.
Can I build a server from an ordinary desktop PC?
Yes, provided the computer has compatible 64-bit hardware, adequate cooling, enough drive capacity, and a reliable wired network connection. A desktop computer may be unsuitable for a large storage pool, continuous heavy workloads, ECC requirements, or a design needing many hot-swappable drives.
Is RAID or ZFS redundancy the same as a backup?
No. RAID, ZFS redundancy, snapshots, and a UPS can reduce downtime or improve resilience, but they do not protect against accidental deletion, ransomware, fire, theft, bad updates, or an administrator making the wrong change. Keep at least one backup that is not continuously exposed to the server and test restoration.
Can TrueNAS be installed on a USB flash drive?
Use the USB device as temporary installer media, but do not automatically use a generic USB stick as the permanent TrueNAS boot device. TrueNAS warns that USB drives and SATA DOMs vary too widely in quality for the write activity of a boot pool; use a suitable SSD-based boot device instead.
Recommended Free Tools
How do I avoid locking myself out of my new server?
Keep an existing session or local-console access available, test key-based login in a second terminal, run sudo sshd -t before applying configuration changes, and reload SSH rather than closing your working session immediately. If access fails, use the console or existing session to correct the configuration.
The Bottom Line
The best server from scratch is not the most powerful one. It is a compatible, maintainable system with workload-appropriate storage, secured administration, documented backups, and a recovery test that actually works.
