The reliable way to get rats and mice out of a shed, barn, or farm building is to remove what sustains them, close the routes they use, and then monitor with a control method that fits the building and its safety risks. This prevention-first sequence follows the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s integrated pest management principles: identify the problem, prevent access and resources, and use controls only when they are needed.
Why a three-step plan works better than putting out bait
Rodents remain where they can find food, water, shelter, and a protected route into the building. Killing a few animals without changing those conditions leaves the same openings and resources available to the next ones. An effective plan therefore starts with building and housekeeping work, not with a product.

For a general description of the integrated pest management framework, see the EPA’s IPM principles.
Step 1: Remove food, water, and shelter
Start by walking the entire building, including corners, lofts, behind stored materials, and the outside wall line. Wear gloves while handling contaminated material, and avoid stirring up dust. Look for evidence rather than assuming the largest animal is the only problem.
Identify the signs and the resources behind them
- Droppings along walls, under shelving, near feed, or beside stored equipment.
- Nesting material such as shredded paper, insulation, cloth, straw, or other fibrous debris.
- Gnawed bags, cartons, wiring insulation, wood, or other packaging.
- Tracks, grease marks, burrows, or a stale animal odor.
- Spilled feed, open refuse, standing water, leaking pipes, and condensation that remains wet.
The EPA’s rodent-infestation guidance recommends cleaning up food and water sources and removing potential nesting sites. In a farm setting, feed and refuse are practical examples of the resources to control, but the right cleanup list depends on the building, animals, and materials stored there.
Control feed and food
- Clean up spilled grain, pellets, seed, and animal feed rather than allowing it to accumulate beneath bins or along walls.
- Keep feed in sound, closed containers appropriate for the material. Inspect containers for gnawing and replace damaged packaging.
- Remove food waste and refuse from the building routinely. Do not leave scraps in an open bucket overnight.
- Store human or pet food away from floor edges and wall voids, and clean residues from work surfaces.
- Keep sacks, cartons, and other packaging off the floor where practical so leaks and droppings are easier to spot.
Do not move contaminated feed into another room and assume the problem is solved. Moving the food without cleaning the original area can simply move the activity with it.
Remove water and damp hiding places
Repair leaks that keep floors wet, empty unnecessary containers, and address condensation or drainage that creates a dependable water source. Check around hose connections, troughs, roof leaks, and low points where water collects. If livestock must have water in the building, position and maintain the system so it does not create persistent spills or inaccessible wet areas.
Take away nesting and cover
Rodents favor undisturbed piles. Reduce clutter around walls and in corners by removing rubbish and surplus materials. Stack necessary supplies so the floor and wall line remain visible. Clear vegetation, discarded equipment, and refuse immediately outside doors and walls where they can provide cover.
Do not dismantle a nest with bare hands. Treat the material as contaminated, place waste in a suitable closed container, and clean the area in a way that does not spread dust. If the building contains livestock, feed, or sensitive equipment, plan the cleanup so debris cannot fall into those areas.

Finish with a resource check
Before moving to repairs, ask three questions for each active location:
- What food could support activity here?
- Where is water available or accumulating?
- What material provides cover or a nest?
Correct the causes you can control, then recheck the same locations after cleaning. A clean floor with a still-open feed bin or a dry corner with a large undisturbed pile is not a completed first step.
Step 2: Seal entry points
Once resources are controlled, inspect how rodents enter. A small opening can be enough, and gaps may be hidden by stored goods or vegetation. Examine doors, walls, floors, roof and foundation transitions, vents, drains, and every utility penetration.
Inspect methodically
- Start outside and follow the foundation and lower wall line around the building.
- Check door edges, thresholds, hinges, and damaged weather seals.
- Inspect interior corners, floor-wall joints, lofts, and wall penetrations.
- Look around pipes, conduit, cables, vents, and other utility openings.
- Compare fresh gnawing, rub marks, or droppings with the openings you find.
Use a flashlight and move stored items far enough to see the wall and floor behind them. Mark each gap so it can be repaired rather than relying on memory.

The EPA gives plugging small holes with steel wool and patching walls as examples in its prevention guidance. Those examples are starting points, not a guarantee that loose steel wool alone will be a permanent repair in every shed or barn.
- For a small, accessible hole, use a tightly fitted exclusion material and secure it so it cannot be pushed out.
- For cracks or damaged wall panels, patch the surrounding structure after removing loose material.
- For door gaps, repair the threshold or weather seal so the door closes against a continuous surface.
- For utility penetrations, close the annular gap without damaging the cable, pipe, or required ventilation.
- For larger openings, repair the wall, floor, foundation, or roof assembly with materials suitable for that structure and exposure.
Do not block a required vent, drain, emergency exit, or animal-access opening without checking the building’s safety requirements. A repair that creates a fire, ventilation, drainage, or livestock hazard is not a successful exclusion repair.
Reinspect after the first repair
Walk the outside perimeter again when the work is complete. Look for a second route beside the repair, gaps at corners, and openings that were hidden by the original clutter. Inside, confirm that no daylight is visible around doors or utility penetrations and that stored materials are not bridging a sealed area.

Sealing is most effective when combined with the first step. If feed remains available and shelter is abundant, rodents may continue testing the building and damage a weak repair. The goal is a continuous, durable boundary plus fewer reasons to approach it.
Step 3: Monitor and choose a targeted control
After cleanup and exclusion, monitor for continuing activity. Look at the same evidence points you recorded in step one: droppings, gnawing, nesting, tracks, and disturbed feed. Monitoring tells you whether prevention is working and whether a control is necessary.
Choose among the available options
The EPA lists lethal snap traps, live traps, and poison baits in tamper-resistant stations as possible controls and recommends trying simple prevention methods first. The method should fit the building, the location of activity, and who or what can reach the device.
| Option | When it can fit | Access and safety questions | Handling required |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lethal snap trap | After food, water, shelter, and access have been addressed, when a trap can be placed where activity is observed. | Can children, pets, livestock, or wildlife reach it? Can it be secured so it cannot be dragged? | Requires checking the trap and disposing of a captured rodent. |
| Live trap | Where a non-lethal capture approach is appropriate and the trap can be checked responsibly. | Can the trap be kept inaccessible to people, livestock, pets, and wildlife while occupied? | Requires frequent attention and a plan for handling and releasing the captured animal consistent with local rules. |
| Poison bait in a tamper-resistant station | Only where the product label permits the intended building, placement, and user category, and prevention alone has not solved the problem. | Can the station remain inaccessible to children, pets, livestock, and non-target wildlife? Is it kept away from food and feed? | Requires label-directed placement, inspection, and prompt removal of dead rodents. |
This table compares practical decision factors, not product performance rankings. The material available from EPA does not establish that one listed option is universally more effective than the others.
Use traps safely
Place traps only in locations that people and animals cannot reach accidentally, and secure them against movement. Position them where your monitoring found activity rather than scattering them through clean areas. Check them on a schedule that prevents a captured animal from being left unattended, and wear appropriate protective equipment when removing a carcass.

A trap is not a substitute for exclusion. If activity continues because a door gap or utility opening remains open, reset the building conditions before adding more devices.
Understand bait categories and labels
Rodenticide rules depend on the product and the intended setting. EPA explains that consumer products are ready-to-use bait stations, while agricultural-use products have distinct conditions. Consumer and agricultural or professional-use categories are not interchangeable.

Before buying or placing any bait, read the complete label for:
- Permitted indoor or outdoor locations.
- Whether the product is authorized for an agricultural building, farm structure, or other specific use.
- Required station type, placement, anchoring, and inspection.
- Restrictions involving children, pets, livestock, feed, food, and water.
- Directions for storing, transporting, and disposing of the product and carcasses.
The EPA’s restrictions on rodenticide products were updated September 8, 2026. The label on the particular product remains the controlling instruction for its use. If the label does not permit your building or situation, choose another approach or obtain qualified local advice; do not improvise a placement.

Protect people, animals, and food
Keep pesticide products away from children, pets, livestock, and food. Never place loose bait where it can be carried into feed or bedding. Use only the station and placement described on the label, and keep an inventory so a missing or damaged station is noticed promptly.
Promptly remove dead rodents to reduce the risk of secondary poisoning. The EPA’s safety information explains the hazards of misuse and the importance of following the product label; review Safely Use Rodent Bait Products and the agency’s rodent-control pesticide safety review before using a bait product.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical monitoring and decision routine
Use the following routine after the building has been cleaned and sealed:
- Record the baseline. Photograph or note each sign, resource, and opening before cleanup.
- Complete resource removal. Clean spills, control refuse and water, and clear nesting cover.
- Complete exclusion repairs. Mark repaired openings and note any area that still needs structural work.
- Inspect for fresh evidence. Revisit the recorded locations and compare new signs with the baseline.
- Select a control only if needed. Choose a trap or label-compliant bait station based on access, setting, and handling requirements.
- Check the control and the building. A captured animal, disturbed station, or new droppings requires a prompt response and another search for resources or access.
- Close the loop. Remove carcasses safely, repair any damaged exclusion work, and keep monitoring the original evidence points.
This approach avoids treating a single trap catch as proof that the building is secure. A declining sign count together with intact repairs is more useful evidence than the number of devices deployed.

“I cleaned the floor, but rodents came back.”
Cleaning one spill does not remove every resource. Check feed containers, refuse, water leaks, exterior clutter, and hidden nesting material. Then inspect for an unsealed door edge or utility opening.

“The steel wool was pulled out.”
Loose material may not withstand movement, weather, or gnawing. Rebuild the repair so it is fitted and secured, and use a structural patch appropriate to the opening rather than assuming one material works everywhere.
“Bait is near a barn, so it must be suitable.”
Location alone does not establish legal or safe use. Confirm the product category and label directions for the exact agricultural or farm-building application, station, placement, and non-target-animal protections.
“A trap was empty, so there are no rodents.”
An empty trap is only one observation. Continue checking droppings, gnawing, nesting, and feed disturbance, and verify that the trap is actually on an active route and remains inaccessible to people and animals.

Prompt removal lowers the chance of secondary poisoning and prevents additional contamination. Follow the product label and local waste requirements for handling and disposal.
When to get local help
Contact a qualified pest professional, your local health agency, or Cooperative Extension when activity persists after resource removal and exclusion, when a building has complex livestock or feed-safety constraints, or when you cannot identify the entry route. EPA notes that rat and mouse control systems vary by state and locality. Use the agency’s government-agency guide to find location-specific contacts.
Local requirements may affect pesticide choice, disposal, release of live-captured rodents, and work around agricultural operations. A professional should be able to explain which product labels and local rules apply, not merely recommend more bait.
Safety checklist before you finish
- Food, feed, refuse, and standing water have been controlled.
- Nesting and hiding materials have been removed without spreading contamination.
- Doors, walls, floors, and utility openings have been inspected and repaired with suitable materials.
- Any trap is inaccessible to children, pets, livestock, and wildlife.
- Any bait is in the label-required tamper-resistant station and away from food and feed.
- The product label has been read for the exact building, placement, and user category.
- Captured or dead rodents are checked and removed promptly.
- Fresh signs are recorded so you can tell whether activity is declining.
Prevention, exclusion, monitoring, and risk-aware control work together. Treating only one of those elements leaves the building vulnerable to the next rat or mouse that finds the same food and opening.
