How to Adjust the EQ and Audio Levels on Your HomePod

HomePod does not expose a conventional manual EQ. You cannot independently adjust bass, midrange, and treble with sliders in the Home app. The built-in tonal control is an on/off Reduce Bass setting. You can also adjust volume, use Sound Check to reduce loudness differences, and change Apple Music playback formats—but those are not substitutes for a full equalizer.

How to reduce bass on HomePod

  1. Open the Home app on an iPhone or iPad.
  2. Tap the HomePod you want to adjust.
  3. Tap the Settings button.
  4. Turn on Reduce Bass.

Reduce Bass lowers HomePod’s low-frequency output. It is a simple switch, not an adjustable bass slider. It does not independently increase treble or change the midrange. The setting is documented in Apple’s current HomePod guide for HomePod software version 26 or later: Apple’s HomePod settings guide.

Reducing bass may improve speech and vocal clarity in a boomy room, but it can also reduce the fullness of kick drums, bass guitar, and cinematic audio.

How to adjust HomePod volume

Volume changes loudness; EQ changes the balance between frequencies. You can control HomePod volume in several ways:

#1 Best Overall
Apple - HomePod mini - Yellow
  • Rich, 360-Degree Sound – Delivers deep bass and crisp high frequencies for immersive audio in any room.
  • Siri Voice Assistant – Control music, smart home devices, and get information hands-free.
  • Seamless Apple Integration – Works effortlessly with iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple TV for a connected experience.
  • Compact & Stylish Design – Small but powerful, fits perfectly in any space.
  • Privacy & Security – Designed to keep your personal information safe and secure.
  • Say, “Hey Siri, set the volume to 50 percent.”
  • Say, “Hey Siri, make it louder” or “make it quieter.”
  • Tap the HomePod’s + or – touch controls.
  • Use the volume controls in the playback interface on your iPhone or iPad.

Apple lists these and other supported audio commands in its HomePod Siri command guide. Siri does not provide documented commands for arbitrary bass, treble, or frequency-band adjustments. If Siri cannot perform a request such as “increase the treble,” that normally means the command is unsupported rather than that the HomePod is faulty.

What Sound Check does

Sound Check is not an equalizer. It attempts to keep music and podcasts at more consistent perceived volume levels, so one track does not suddenly sound much louder than the next.

To enable it:

  1. Open Home.
  2. Tap the More button.
  3. Tap Home Settings.
  4. Scroll down and turn on Sound Check.

Use Sound Check when the problem is inconsistent loudness. It will not correct excessive bass, harsh treble, weak vocals, or a muffled-sounding room. See Apple’s HomePod settings documentation for the current menu path.

Apple - HomePod mini - Black

  • Seamless Apple Integration – Works effortlessly with iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple TV for a connected experience.
  • Compact & Stylish Design – Small but powerful, fits perfectly in any space.
  • Privacy & Security – Designed to keep your personal information safe and secure.

Does the iPhone Music EQ control HomePod?

The iPhone has selectable Music EQ presets at Settings > Apps > Music > EQ. Apple documents this as an EQ setting for the Music app on iPhone, not as a HomePod-wide equalizer. It is also preset-based rather than a fully manual graphic EQ. Details are in Apple’s iPhone Music settings guide.

Its effect depends on the playback route. Music coming from the iPhone’s own speakers or connected headphones is different from music sent to HomePod with AirPlay, and both differ from Apple Music that HomePod plays directly through Siri or its own network connection. Apple does not document the iPhone EQ as a universal control for every HomePod playback path, so do not rely on it as a guaranteed HomePod EQ.

For reliable HomePod-level tonal adjustment, use Reduce Bass or an external audio setup with its own documented EQ. An arbitrary third-party EQ app may not affect audio that HomePod streams directly.

Lossless Audio and Dolby Atmos are not EQ

Lossless Audio

Lossless Audio changes the audio format, not the frequency balance. To find the setting:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Home on the iPhone or iPad used to set up HomePod.
  2. Tap More, then Home Settings.
  3. Under People, tap your name.
  4. Tap Apple Music.
  5. Turn Lossless Audio on or off.

Lossless playback requires compatible Apple Music content and an Apple Music subscription. It will not fix a room that sounds boomy, bright, or dull. Apple’s setup instructions are available at Apple Support.

Dolby Atmos

Dolby Atmos changes the spatial presentation of compatible Apple Music tracks. It may sound wider or otherwise different, but it is not a bass, treble, or midrange control.

Rank #4
Amazon Echo Dot (newest model) - Vibrant sounding speaker, Designed for Alexa+, Great for bedrooms, dining rooms and offices, Deep Sea Blue
  • Your favorite music and content – Play music, audiobooks, and podcasts from Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify and others or via Bluetooth throughout your home.
  • Alexa is happy to help – Ask Alexa for weather updates and to set hands-free timers, get answers to your questions and even hear jokes. Need a few extra minutes in the morning? Just tap your Echo Dot to snooze your alarm.
  • Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart home devices with your voice and routines triggered by built-in motion or indoor temperature sensors.
  • Do more with device pairing – Fill your home with music using compatible Echo devices in different rooms, or create a home theatre system with Fire TV.
  • Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.

Its Home app path is Home > More > Home Settings > your name under People > Apple Music > Dolby Atmos. Apple’s current HomePod guide says Dolby Atmos requires compatible Apple Music content and an Apple Music subscription, and that it is not supported on HomePod mini. See Apple’s HomePod playback guide.

If one song or album sounds unusually different, compare it with Dolby Atmos on and off. The difference may be caused by the mix, a remaster, the playback format, or the source—not a missing EQ setting.

What to try when HomePod sounds boomy, harsh, or muffled

  • Too much bass: Turn on Reduce Bass and compare the same track at a moderate volume.
  • Vocals seem unclear: Test Reduce Bass, since excess low-end energy can mask speech and vocals.
  • Harsh treble or weak midrange: HomePod has no documented treble or midrange slider. Try changing placement and compare several recordings.
  • Room sounds boomy: Move the HomePod away from a corner or highly reflective surface. Placement and room resonance can affect what you hear, and Reduce Bass is only a broad on/off adjustment.
  • Only one album sounds wrong: Compare another recording and check whether Dolby Atmos, a remaster, compression, or a different playback source is involved.
  • You need precise control: Use a speaker or audio system with a documented hardware or software EQ. Do not assume an iPhone app will control HomePod’s native playback.

HomePod handles much of its audio processing automatically, but Apple does not expose those internal processes as editable frequency bands. The user-accessible tonal adjustment remains Reduce Bass.

  • Siri Voice Assistant – Control music, smart home devices, and get information hands-free.
  • Seamless Apple Integration – Works effortlessly with iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple TV for a connected experience.

If Reduce Bass is missing or does not appear to work

  1. Confirm that you are editing the correct HomePod.
  2. Use the Home app, not the Music app, and open the individual HomePod tile before tapping its settings.
  3. Make sure the iPhone or iPad is signed in to the Apple Account associated with the home.
  4. Update HomePod software and the controlling iPhone or iPad.
  5. Close and reopen the Home app.
  6. Restart the HomePod.
  7. Check whether the device is a HomePod, HomePod mini, or another Siri-enabled speaker or accessory; menus can differ.
  8. If the switch is present but the change is unclear, compare the same track with Reduce Bass on and off at a moderate volume.

Availability can depend on the device, software version, language, region, and app state. Apple’s HomePod support hub provides current update, setup, and troubleshooting resources.

HomePod models and playback routes

Do not assume that HomePod and HomePod mini support identical audio features. Apple’s current guide specifically says Dolby Atmos is not supported on HomePod mini.

Also distinguish between HomePod playing Apple Music directly, receiving AirPlay audio from an iPhone, iPad, or Mac, and being used as Apple TV 4K audio. These routes can involve different format and control settings. Reduce Bass is documented as reducing HomePod’s low-frequency output, but Apple does not document it as a universal, independently configurable EQ for every possible source.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a stereo pair, select the relevant HomePod or paired setup in the Home app and verify which device or setting you are editing. Do not assume that a control shown for one speaker has a separately documented stereo-pair behavior.
