How to Adjust Google Maps to Avoid Construction Zones and Restricted Turns

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Google Maps has no universal setting that guarantees avoidance of every construction zone, closure, or restricted turn. The dependable approach is to review the blue route and gray alternatives before departure, use the available Route options, watch live traffic and incident alerts, and switch to a legal alternate route when conditions change. If the map gives a wrong instruction, report it after you are safely stopped; posted signs and traffic laws always take priority.

What Google Maps can—and cannot—avoid

Consumer Google Maps treats avoidance as a routing preference, not an absolute barrier. You can usually ask it to avoid tolls, highways, or ferries, depending on your device and location. Those settings bias the route toward roads without the selected feature. They do not create a guaranteed exclusion zone: Google’s route documentation says a restricted feature may still appear when there is no practical alternative or when every alternative would add substantial travel time.

There is no documented universal “avoid construction” or “avoid restricted turns” switch for the consumer app. Construction is handled mainly through live traffic and incident information, while turn legality depends on map data, road signs, lane markings, and time-based restrictions. A newly installed barrier, a temporary lane closure, or a changed turn rule can therefore be absent or delayed in the route you receive.

  • Before driving: inspect the proposed route and every displayed alternative.
  • During driving: watch for traffic, construction, lane-closure, crash, and congestion alerts.
  • When the road disagrees with the app: obey the sign or traffic control, stop safely, and then choose another route.
  • Afterward: report a wrong instruction or correct the underlying road data if the map itself is wrong.

Plan a route that is less likely to enter a work zone

  1. Open Google Maps, enter your destination, tap or click Directions, and select Driving.
  2. Identify the blue suggested route and any gray alternatives. Do not judge them by arrival time alone. Check whether each one approaches the destination from a legal direction, crosses a known work area, uses a restricted road class, or depends on a turn that appears difficult or prohibited.
  3. Open Route options or the equivalent navigation settings. Turn on the available avoidances for tolls, highways, or ferries when those roads are the source of the problem. The controls shown vary by device, country, and road network.
  4. Tap an acceptable gray route to preview it. Compare the extra distance and time, the number of turns, and whether it uses roads that are open and suitable for your vehicle.
  5. If no displayed route approaches legally, add a stop on a known open connecting road. The stop should shape the route away from the closure, not merely be a point on the same blocked street.
  6. Start navigation only after you have identified what you will do if the road ahead is closed. Keep the map visible and listen for traffic or incident alerts.

Route review is especially important near long-term projects, bridges, downtown one-way systems, and roads where a turn is restricted only at certain times. A route that was legal yesterday can become unsuitable before the map receives the change.

Android phone or tablet: exact steps

Set an avoidance preference

  1. Open Google Maps, enter the destination, tap Directions, and choose Driving.
  2. Review the blue route and gray alternatives on the preview map.
  3. Open the navigation settings or Route options. Enable any available preference such as Avoid tolls or Avoid highways. These options influence the result; they do not promise that the selected road type will never appear.
  4. Start navigation and leave the traffic display available so changing conditions can be seen while you drive.

Report a construction incident while navigating

When it is safe to do so, tap Report during navigation. Depending on the country, Google may offer incident choices such as Construction, Lane closure, Crash, or Traffic jam. Incident reporting is not available in every country, and the list of choices can differ by location.

Reroute around a closure

If an alert, barrier, or officer indicates that the road is closed, do not turn illegally to remain on the blue line. Stop in a lawful place, select a gray alternate route, or add a stop on a confirmed open road to force a different approach. Follow the signs and traffic controls even when the app has not yet recalculated.

iPhone or iPad: what is different

The planning method on iPhone and iPad is the same: enter the destination, choose Directions and Driving, inspect alternate routes, and use the avoidance controls that appear for your location. Traffic and incident information can be used where Google supports those features.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The important limitation is reporting. The cited Google help workflow does not currently let you report a wrong direction step from a phone or tablet. If the route gives an incorrect turn instruction, make a note of the location and submit the detailed report from Google Maps on a computer after the trip. You can still react immediately by following the physical sign, stopping safely, and selecting an alternate route.

Computer: report a wrong direction or repair road data

Flag a wrong step in a route

  1. Open Google Maps on a computer and click Directions.
  2. Enter the starting point and destination, choose Driving, and select the affected blue or gray route.
  3. Open Details, choose Send Product Feedback, identify the wrong step, and submit the problem.

Google documents this wrong-step workflow as computer-only and notes that availability can depend on the country or region. Describe what the sign, lane marking, closure, or turn restriction actually required. A precise location and the direction of travel make the report more useful than a general statement that the route was bad.

Correct a closure, one-way error, or missing road

  1. In Google Maps, open Menu and choose Edit the map.
  2. Select Add or fix a road, then select the affected road segment.
  3. Choose the type of information that needs correction and submit the edit.

Supported correction types include a road marked one-way when it is two-way (or the reverse), an incorrectly drawn road, a closure, a road that does not exist, and a missing road. Regional limits apply, so some edits or categories may not be offered in every place. This tool is for the map record itself; it is not a substitute for reporting an immediate hazard while you are on the road.

Google Maps built into a car

  1. Search for the destination on the vehicle display and open the route.
  2. Choose Route overview, then Route options.
  3. Select the available avoidances for tolls, highways, or ferries.
  4. In Settings, enable Traffic so congestion and incident information can affect the route.
  5. If offered by the vehicle, choose the traffic-alert-only sound mode. This mode can provide alerts for traffic, construction, and crashes without every navigation prompt being repeated.

Car-display features depend on the vehicle, country, road segment, and data plan. A setting available on a phone may not appear on the vehicle screen, and an alert may not be available for every road.

How to choose between an alternate route, a stop, and an avoid setting

Option Use it when What it changes Limitations
Gray alternate route A displayed route avoids the closure or approaches the destination legally. Switches navigation to a route Google has already calculated. It can still contain a restriction that is missing or delayed in the map data; check signs and access before following it.
Add a stop No displayed route uses the open road you need. Shapes the route through a known open connecting road or intersection. A poorly chosen stop can send you back toward the closure or create an unsuitable detour.
Avoid tolls, highways, or ferries The problem is a road class or crossing represented by one of those preferences. Biases route selection away from the selected feature. Google may still use the feature if alternatives are impractical or would add substantial time.
Follow signs and stop safely The physical road condition conflicts with the screen. Keeps the trip within current traffic law and on-site controls. You may need to wait, turn around legally, or plan a new route after stopping.

When comparing choices, weigh legal access first. Then compare evidence that the closure is current, extra time and distance, toll exposure, the road class, and whether the problem is a temporary incident or an error in the underlying map.

Use a stop strategically instead of guessing at a detour

An added stop is most useful when you know which open road or intersection should anchor the detour. For example, if a bridge approach is blocked, choose a confirmed open crossing or a road on the far side of the work area, provided that access to the stop is legal. If you simply add a nearby address on the same closed corridor, Maps can still route you into the closure.

After adding the stop, inspect every leg of the trip. The first leg may avoid the original barrier while the next leg introduces a one-way conflict or a time-limited turn. Check the complete sequence of junctions, not just the first maneuver. Remove the stop and try another connecting road if the detour adds unnecessary distance or sends you toward a road class you meant to avoid.

Construction and restricted turns: temporary versus map-data problems

A traffic alert, lane closure, or crash is generally a temporary incident. It may disappear when conditions change. A wrong one-way designation, road shape, missing segment, or nonexistent road is an underlying map-data problem that can continue affecting routes until someone submits a correction. Knowing which kind of problem you saw helps you choose the right report.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Temporary condition: use the in-navigation Report menu, when available, for construction, lane closure, crash, or traffic jam.
  • Wrong instruction: from a computer, open the route’s Details, choose Send Product Feedback, and flag the incorrect step.
  • Road-record error: use Menu → Edit the map → Add or fix a road for closure information, one-way or two-way status, geometry, missing roads, or roads that do not exist.

These channels address different layers of Maps. An incident report tells Google about a condition along a route; a map edit identifies a persistent problem with the road record. Neither report changes the legal status of the road immediately, so continue to follow signs and traffic controls.

Restricted-turn troubleshooting

1. Confirm what the restriction actually says

Look at the sign, lane arrows, turn signal, barrier, and any time-of-day or vehicle-class qualification. A turn can be prohibited only during certain hours, from one lane, or for one direction of travel. If the turn is physically impossible or marked illegal, do not attempt it because the blue line continues through the junction.

2. Review the approaches before you move

From a safe stop, inspect the gray routes and their junctions. Select an approach that reaches the destination from a legal direction rather than one that merely shortens the displayed distance.

3. Add a shaping stop when needed

Choose a known open road beyond the restriction and add it as a stop. Check the resulting route for another prohibited turn; adding one point does not guarantee that every subsequent junction is legal.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Report the error after reaching safety

Use the computer wrong-step workflow if the instruction itself was wrong. If the map shows the wrong one-way status, road geometry, closure, missing road, or nonexistent road, use Menu → Edit the map → Add or fix a road instead. These are separate corrections because one addresses a navigation instruction and the other addresses the road record.

Why Maps can send you toward a closed road

Google says traffic conditions and route choices use anonymous location data plus licensed information from partners such as governments, nonprofits, schools, and businesses. That combination can identify congestion and incidents, but it cannot guarantee that every newly erected barrier, temporary turn ban, or local traffic-control change is present immediately.

Data can therefore be missing, delayed, or limited to certain regions. A closure may be represented as an incident one day and as a permanent road-data change later. Until the map reflects it, the route engine may continue to offer the road. Google does not publish a consumer accuracy percentage specifically for avoiding construction zones or restricted turns, so an exact success rate should not be assumed.

Route modifiers have a similar limitation. Selecting an avoidance tells the system what to prefer; it does not remove every route containing that feature. If avoiding a highway, toll, or ferry would make the trip impractical, the feature can remain in the calculated route.

Safety rules that override the app

  • Do not interact with the phone or vehicle screen while moving. Pull over legally before changing the route or submitting a report.
  • Never cross a barrier, enter a closed lane, make a prohibited turn, or reverse into traffic because the blue line suggests it.
  • When the app and the road disagree, follow the sign, signal, officer, lane marking, and current traffic regulation.
  • Expect a route to change after a closure, crash, or construction phase changes. Recheck the approach rather than assuming the previous preview is still valid.

Google’s directions guidance puts the rule plainly: “When in doubt, follow actual traffic regulations and confirm signage from the road or path that you’re on.” For incident reporting, Google also explains, “To help improve Maps, you can share info along your route.” Those reports can improve future routing, but they do not provide immediate permission to use a restricted road.

A practical decision sequence

  1. Before departure: preview Driving directions, compare the blue route with gray alternatives, and set available avoidances.
  2. If a work zone appears: choose a legal displayed alternate or add a stop on a confirmed open road.
  3. If a turn is restricted: obey the sign, stop safely, and approach from another direction.
  4. If no alternative is practical: wait for a safe, lawful route rather than forcing the app to comply with an unavailable option.
  5. After the trip: report a wrong instruction on a computer or submit an Add or fix a road edit for incorrect road data.

Quick checks before you trust an alternate

Use a short checklist each time a gray route looks attractive. First, verify that the entrance and exit are open, not merely that the line is drawn around the work zone. Next, look for one-way arrows, turn bans, lane-specific signs, and time windows near the junction. Compare the route’s added minutes and distance with the likely delay at the work zone, but do not trade legal access for a shorter estimate.

Also check whether the alternate introduces tolls, highways, ferries, narrow roads, or a road unsuitable for your vehicle. If the route depends on a private drive, temporary access road, or a point behind a barricade, choose another stop. Preview the route again immediately before leaving because construction phases and traffic controls can change between planning and departure.

What to include in a useful report

Submit reports only when you are stopped and safe. Record the exact intersection or road segment, your direction of travel, and what the sign or barrier required. State whether the issue was a temporary closure, a lane closure, a prohibited turn, a wrong one-way designation, incorrect road geometry, a missing road, or a road that does not exist. Distinguishing those details helps route feedback reach the appropriate map or incident record.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the issue is time-based, include the hours shown on the sign. If access differs by lane or vehicle type, identify that qualification. A clear description is more actionable than saying only that Maps “sent you the wrong way.” Availability of reporting tools and categories varies by country or region.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make Google Maps avoid construction?
There is no universal construction-avoidance switch. Preview Driving directions, inspect gray alternatives, watch live construction and lane-closure alerts, and select a legal alternate or add a stop on a confirmed open road.
Can I stop Google Maps from taking me through a road closure?
Not with a guaranteed setting. Stop safely when you see a barrier or closure, follow posted detour signs, then select a displayed alternate or add a stop that takes the route onto an open connecting road.
How do I avoid a no-turn or restricted turn?
Check signs, lane markings, time restrictions, and the direction of travel. Choose an approach that reaches the destination legally; if necessary, add a stop beyond the restriction and review every later junction.
Why is Google Maps sending me down a closed road?
Closures and turn changes can be missing, delayed, or limited by region. Maps combines anonymous location data with information from government, nonprofit, school, and business partners, but no consumer accuracy percentage is published for these situations.
Can I report a wrong turn from an Android phone or iPhone?
Google’s documented wrong-step workflow is available on computers and may be limited by country or region. On a phone, obey the road and report the step later from a computer; Android navigation may still offer incident reporting for construction or lane closures.
What is the difference between reporting an incident and fixing a road?
Use the in-navigation Report menu for a current construction, lane closure, crash, or traffic jam when the feature is available. Use Add or fix a road for persistent map errors such as wrong one-way status, incorrect geometry, closures, missing roads, or nonexistent roads.
Will Avoid highways or Avoid tolls always work?
No. These preferences bias the route away from the selected feature. Google may still include it when alternatives are impractical or would add substantial travel time.
Does the car version have the same controls as the phone app?
Not necessarily. On supported car displays, use Route overview → Route options and enable available toll, highway, or ferry avoidances. Traffic and traffic-alert-only sound settings depend on the vehicle, country, road segment, and data plan.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I make Google Maps avoid construction?

There is no universal construction-avoidance switch. Review Driving routes, compare gray alternatives, monitor incident alerts, and choose a legal alternate or add a stop on an open road.

Can Google Maps avoid every restricted turn?

No. Turn restrictions can be missing, delayed, time-based, lane-specific, or changed on site. Follow signs and use an approach that is legal in the real traffic environment.

What should I do when the blue line enters a closure?

Do not cross barriers or make an illegal turn. Stop safely, follow the signed detour, select a gray alternate, or add a stop that shapes the route onto a confirmed open road.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I report a wrong direction?

On a computer, open Directions, select the route, choose Details, then Send Product Feedback and flag the wrong step. Availability varies by country or region.

How do I correct a wrong one-way or missing road?

Use Menu → Edit the map → Add or fix a road, select the segment, choose the error type, and submit the correction. Regional limits apply.

Why might an avoid preference still show a highway or toll?

Avoid preferences bias route selection rather than creating hard exclusions. The feature may remain when no practical alternative exists or alternatives add substantial time.

The Bottom Line

Google Maps can reduce exposure to construction and restricted turns, but it cannot guarantee avoidance. Preview routes, compare gray alternatives, use available toll/highway/ferry preferences, monitor live alerts, and add a stop when you need to shape the approach. If the screen conflicts with a sign, barrier, officer, or traffic law, stop safely and follow the real-world instruction. Report temporary incidents in navigation where supported, and correct persistent road-data errors from a computer.
