On October 20, 2025, some Eight Sleep Pod owners reportedly lost normal control of their beds during a major AWS disruption in the US East (N. Virginia) us-east-1 region. Reports described unexpected heat or cold, repeated alarms, and bases that could not immediately be flattened or repositioned.
That does not mean every smart bed failed, that every Pod reached 110°F, or that AWS directly moved beds into dangerous positions. It does show a more important design problem: when a product controls heat and mechanical movement, cloud dependence can turn an ordinary service outage into a physical-device reliability and potential safety issue.

The short version: AWS suffered a serious regional incident on October 20, 2025. Some Eight Sleep users said their Pods became difficult or impossible to control through the app, with reports of uncomfortable temperatures, alarms, and elevated bases. Eight Sleep subsequently reported a Bluetooth-based Outage Access fallback with limited local controls. The incident remains a warning for anyone buying a connected bed: ask what still works when the internet, cloud service, phone, or power fails.

What happened during the AWS outage?
AWS’s official incident record identifies October 20, 2025, as a major disruption centered on its US East (N. Virginia) region, known as us-east-1. AWS reported increased errors and latency overnight. The initial problem involved DNS-resolution failures affecting regional DynamoDB endpoints. AWS said that issue was mitigated at 3:35 a.m. PDT, but broader regional connectivity and service recovery continued for considerably longer.

“AWS crashed” is therefore shorthand, not a technically precise description. This was not a total worldwide shutdown of the internet or every AWS region. It was a regional, multi-service incident whose effects reached applications that depended on services in or connected to us-east-1. AWS’s official incident timeline provides the authoritative account.
Which beds were affected?
The available reporting concerns Eight Sleep Pod systems, including references to Pod 3 and other generations. It does not establish that every Eight Sleep product, every Pod generation, or every smart bed was affected.
No verified affected-device count or failure rate has been published in the evidence available for this article. It is also not clear whether the reported behavior differed by hardware generation, firmware, country, membership status, or app version. Nor is there enough evidence to determine whether local electronics failed or whether cloud commands became unavailable while a previously scheduled routine continued.

What did users report?
Contemporaneous secondary coverage and user posts described several symptoms:
- Unexpectedly warm or cold beds.
- Repeated or unexpected alarms.
- Loss of app connectivity and control.
- Bases remaining elevated or otherwise uncomfortable.
- Difficulty changing the temperature or flattening the base.
- Connected accessories or components failing to connect.
Some coverage cited temperatures as high as 110°F. That figure should be treated carefully: it was presented in reporting and product-capability context, not as independent measurement proving that every affected bed reached that temperature. Likewise, “torture chamber” is a vivid description used by coverage, not an engineering finding.

A connected bed commonly involves more than a mattress and a remote control. The control path may look like this:
Phone app → internet → company cloud services → hub or Pod → temperature and positioning hardware
When that chain works, the app can send temperature, alarm, or positioning commands through the company’s backend. If DNS, authentication, cloud APIs, or another dependency fails, the app may not be able to issue a new command or receive current status.
That matters because the controlled device is physical. A failed cloud connection is relatively harmless when it only prevents a report from loading. It is more consequential when the product controls:
- Heat or cooling while a person is in bed.
- Motors that raise or lower a base.
- Alarms that a user expects to stop locally.
- A scheduled routine that may continue after remote control is lost.
The evidence supports a cloud-dependency chain, not a complete forensic reconstruction. It does not show that AWS itself commanded the beds to heat or elevate. A more defensible explanation is that the outage disrupted the service path Eight Sleep users normally relied on, while the product’s local fallback was insufficient or unavailable for some users at that time.

Was this a safety incident?
It was more serious than an ordinary app outage because the product combines heat, motors, human occupancy, and overnight use. A bed that becomes too hot, repeatedly alarms, remains inclined, or cannot be controlled can create discomfort and a potential safety concern.
However, the available evidence does not establish confirmed injuries, burns, fires, emergency rescues, or regulatory findings arising from this outage. Calling it a potential safety and reliability incident is supportable. Calling it a proven dangerous-product defect would go beyond the evidence.
The key question for any connected bed is not simply whether it has an internet connection. It is whether essential functions have a safe local fallback and a predictable fail state when that connection disappears.
What did Eight Sleep do afterward?
Eight Sleep CEO Matteo Franceschetti reportedly apologized and promised an outage-proof or offline mode. Later coverage described Outage Access, a Bluetooth-based fallback intended to restore a limited set of controls. Reported functions included opening the app, turning the Pod on or off, changing temperature, and flattening the base.
That is a meaningful improvement over having no local recovery path, but it should not automatically be treated as a complete fix. Owners and prospective buyers should confirm the current details directly with Eight Sleep because availability may depend on the Pod generation, firmware, app version, country, phone permissions, and membership tier.
Important questions include:
- Does Outage Access work when the internet is unavailable, or only for a narrower detected service failure?
- Must Bluetooth be enabled or paired in advance?
- Does it work if the hub has power but the company’s cloud is unreachable?
- Can it control both sides of a dual-zone bed independently?
- Can it stop an active heating or cooling cycle?
- Does it work if the user is logged out or the app cannot authenticate?
- Which Pod generations support it?
- Is it available without an active membership?
A Bluetooth fallback also has a clear boundary: it cannot help if the hub or bed has no electrical power. Internet failure and power failure are different problems.

Internet outage versus power outage
| Failure | What may stop working | What a resilient design should provide |
|---|---|---|
| Company cloud outage | Remote commands, authentication, status, routines | Local control of essential functions |
| Home Wi-Fi outage | Internet-based app communication | Bluetooth or physical controls |
| Phone unavailable | App-based recovery | Hub, handset, or base controls |
| Bluetooth disabled or unpaired | Local wireless fallback | Clear pairing and recovery procedure |
| Hub or mattress hardware unpowered | All electronic functions | Safe mechanical state and manufacturer-approved recovery |
| Active routine with cloud unavailable | New commands may not arrive | Safe cancellation and predictable default behavior |
What owners should do before the next outage
- Update the app and firmware. Current fallback features may require newer software.
- Keep Bluetooth enabled on the control phone. If the fallback relies on prior pairing, test it before you need it.
- Test local recovery. Confirm that you can open the app, change temperature, stop active functions, and flatten the base without internet access.
- Locate the hub and power connections. Know which components must remain powered and where they are located.
- Keep an independent alarm clock. Do not rely on a cloud-connected bed as your only alarm.
- Do not remain on an overheating or mechanically unstable bed. Move to a safe location if you can do so safely.
- Follow the manufacturer’s power guidance. Do not improvise electrical repairs or unplug equipment unless Eight Sleep’s instructions support that step.
- Contact support if the bed cannot be cooled, powered down, or flattened. This is especially important for people with mobility limitations.
What does the subscription change?
Eight Sleep uses a paid Autopilot or membership model for many intelligent features. Secondary references have cited plans beginning around $15 per month when billed annually, while other reports have shown different monthly prices. Those figures are volatile and can vary by plan, billing cadence, taxes, region, and promotion. Check the official membership page and checkout terms for current information.

- What is included in the hardware purchase?
- Is an initial membership period required?
- What does ongoing membership cost?
- Which temperature, automation, tracking, and alarm features remain after cancellation?
- Is Outage Access available without membership?
- Does warranty length or support depend on continued membership?
- What happens to sleep and biometric data if the subscription ends?
The subscription is not merely a pricing issue. If an ongoing fee controls access to advanced functions, it affects long-term ownership, repair decisions, warranty coverage, and the usefulness of the hardware after cancellation. Do not treat a reported $400-per-year figure as universal.
How to evaluate a smart bed before buying
Use this checklist for any connected bed or other device that controls heat, movement, access, or health-related functions:
- Local control: Can you change temperature and positioning without internet?
- Safe default: What happens to active heating, cooling, alarms, and elevation when connectivity fails?
- Physical controls: Are there buttons on the hub, base, or handset?
- Graceful degradation: Do basic functions remain available when analytics and cloud features disappear?
- Power behavior: What happens during an electrical outage, and is there a manual recovery procedure?
- Subscription dependence: Which essential or safety-adjacent functions require payment?
- Warranty: What is covered, for how long, and under what membership conditions?
- Privacy: Can the product operate without sending sleep or biometric data to the cloud?
- Recovery: Can a user regain control quickly at night?
- Support: Is overnight assistance available, and are instructions clear?
- Accessibility: Can someone with limited mobility safely recover from an elevated or malfunctioning position?
Is this problem unique to Eight Sleep?
No. The same architectural concern applies to smart locks, garage doors, thermostats, cameras, alarm systems, appliances, adjustable bases, and some wellness or medical devices. But a temperature-controlled bed makes the issue unusually visible because it combines heat, motors, an occupied product, and overnight use.
That does not mean every connected-home product is equally risky. The deciding factors are local control, a safe fail state, independent physical controls, and the consequences of losing remote access.
What the outage proves—and what it does not
The incident does not prove that connected beds are inherently unsafe. It does not establish a universal Eight Sleep failure rate, prove that every Pod reached its maximum temperature, or show that the outage caused injuries.
It does demonstrate that cloud architecture becomes a physical reliability issue when software controls heat and motion. AWS availability is only one layer. A resilient product must also account for DNS, authentication, the manufacturer’s own services, the customer’s internet connection, the phone, Bluetooth permissions, firmware, power, and the possibility that a person is asleep or unable to leave the bed.
Eight Sleep’s reported Bluetooth fallback addresses part of that problem. Buyers should still verify exactly what it controls, which models support it, whether it requires membership, and what happens during a total power failure.
