The new C.W. Williams Community Health Center in Charlotte, North Carolina, shows how a community clinic can look hopeful without becoming flashy, and secure without feeling forbidding. BHM Architects designed the 17,700-square-foot facility around a broader service mix, a welcoming neighborhood presence, natural light, durable materials and moisture-conscious construction.
The project opened on its original site in Fall 2024. Its design decisions reflect the goals stated by the client and project team; they should be read as a case study in priorities, not as universal proof that one material or layout produces better health outcomes.

A community health center designed around dignity
The C.W. Williams Community Health Center serves West Charlotte and was planned for a community that needed more than a conventional primary-care office. The completed building brings medical and support services together under one roof while presenting a strong, clean and updated face to the neighborhood.

It was to make patients feel that the care they receive is valuable, considered and part of the community.

Mulkey also described the neighborhood goal directly: “The goal was to have the center fit beautifully into the neighborhood without being too ostentatious.” That balance shaped the building’s scale, colors, windows and masonry pattern.
What the new facility includes
The center expanded the range of services available at the original location. In addition to primary and preventive care, the project added pharmacy, dental care, mental-health services, substance-use counseling, pediatrics and a food pantry.
The project article describes the center as serving about 13,000 patients annually. That is a project-context figure reported in the article, not an independently verified current census. It nevertheless explains why circulation, cleanability, resilience and a clear sense of welcome mattered to the design team.

How the design makes a public-service building feel welcoming
A contemporary form without an institutional chill
The building has a square, two-story form. Rather than leaving that mass as a blank box, the exterior uses a linear masonry pattern to break up the elevations. The pattern gives the walls rhythm and helps the building read as carefully made instead of purely utilitarian.
The palette combines light masonry tones with blue-gray colors, dark panels and warm wood. Light surfaces help the center feel open and visible, while the darker accents and wood introduce contrast and warmth. These choices were intended to support a current, confident appearance that remains compatible with its surroundings.

Neighborhood fit as a design requirement
Neighborhood fit was treated as more than an aesthetic preference. A community clinic can be highly visible without becoming a landmark that overwhelms nearby homes and businesses. The project team’s stated aim was to fit beautifully into the neighborhood without being ostentatious, so the design uses proportion, restrained color and material variation rather than a dramatic signature shape.
That approach also supports dignity. Patients are not entering a building that announces poverty or crisis through a bleak exterior, yet the center does not pretend to be something unrelated to the neighborhood it serves.
Natural light balanced with privacy and security
High windows bring daylight into the building while addressing security concerns identified by the project team. Placing glazing higher on the walls can admit light without creating the same level of direct visibility into rooms or from the street as large, low windows would. The article presents this as a project solution, not as a rule that applies to every clinic.
BHM’s portfolio adds that natural light, access to nature and colors associated with nature informed the healing-environment intent. The descriptions establish what the designers were trying to achieve. They do not provide a controlled measurement of stress, recovery time, attendance or another patient outcome.
Why masonry was selected for the exterior
Durability in a busy, budget-conscious facility
The center was expected to serve many patients while operating under a strict budget. The project team raised concerns about vandalism and break-ins and described masonry as tough and easy to clean. Those characteristics matter in a public-facing facility where exterior surfaces receive constant contact, weather exposure and occasional abuse.
The specified product was Echelon Masonry’s Aria Slim in Ground Face Granite and Texture Face Alabaster. It was selected for this project’s appearance and performance requirements. The available project information does not establish that it is the best choice for every healthcare building, nor does it provide comparative lifecycle-cost testing against other systems.

Local sourcing and logistics
The article reports that the masonry was sourced locally. The project team presented local sourcing as a way to help control transportation and manufacturing costs. That is a project-specific cost and logistics rationale; it should not be generalized into a guaranteed saving for another site, since pricing depends on distance, supplier capacity, labor and procurement timing.
Moisture management in humid Charlotte
Charlotte’s humid climate made water management an important part of the envelope discussion. The project selected solid masonry rather than thin veneer so the wall could use a rainscreen approach. In the described assembly, a gap behind the outer masonry helps direct moisture away from the wall and provides ventilation. The project also used a water-repellent treatment.
This is the design team’s stated strategy for handling rain and humidity. A rainscreen gap and water-repellent treatment do not make a wall immune to leaks, condensation or mold, and performance still depends on detailing, flashings, drainage paths, installation quality and maintenance. The case study does not report long-term moisture testing.

How the project balances openness and security
Healthcare buildings have to be approachable while controlling risks that ordinary offices may not face. The C.W. Williams design addresses that tension through several coordinated moves rather than one feature.
- High glazing: Windows provide daylight while limiting some direct sightlines and responding to security concerns cited by the team.
- Robust exterior materials: The project team described masonry as resistant to the wear, vandalism and cleaning demands expected at a busy public facility.
- Measured visual presence: The linear pattern, restrained palette and two-story scale make the building easy to identify without making it feel imposing.
- Integrated services: Bringing medical, behavioral-health, dental, pharmacy and food-support functions together can reduce the need for patients to navigate several unrelated buildings, although the project sources do not quantify that effect.
Security is therefore treated as part of the building’s appearance and envelope, not only as a hardware or access-control problem. The sources do not provide a security audit, incident data or a claim that the design eliminates risk.
What “healing environment” means in this case
BHM’s project description connects the building to a healing-environment approach through natural light, access to nature and nature-associated colors. In practical terms, that means the design team considered how a person experiences the building while waiting, moving between services and approaching the entrance—not only how many rooms fit on the plan.

The phrase should be kept in proportion to the available information. The project article and portfolio describe intentions and design choices; they do not present a controlled study comparing patient outcomes before and after the move. There is no verified statistic in the project material showing that the masonry, window height or color palette caused faster recovery, lower anxiety or improved treatment adherence.

That distinction does not make the choices meaningless. It clarifies what this project can teach: how a client and architect translated dignity, welcome, durability, security and neighborhood compatibility into visible and buildable decisions.

The center’s official project letter, dated June 10, 2024, projected an August 2024 opening. The later Building Enclosure project article reports that the facility opened in Fall 2024. The August date was a forecast; Fall 2024 is the later reported opening. They should not be treated as competing measurements of the same event.
Likewise, the 17,700-square-foot figure in the project article and BHM’s approximately 18,000-square-foot portfolio description are different levels of rounding. Use the precise figure when discussing the article’s project data and the rounded figure when describing the portfolio entry.
What other healthcare projects can learn from the case
Start with the social message of the building
Before selecting cladding or colors, define what the facility should communicate to patients. Here, the client explicitly rejected a bleak public-service image. That statement gave the design team a test for later decisions: does the building look cared for, current and respectful?

A clinic can be recognizable without being ostentatious. Study surrounding building heights, setbacks, colors and street activity, then use material scale and proportion to belong to the setting. A neighborhood-compatible design is not necessarily anonymous; it is legible without overpowering its context.

Coordinate daylight and privacy early
Window placement affects daylight, views, security, glare, heat gain and room planning. The center’s high-window strategy shows one way to pursue daylight while responding to security concerns. Other projects should validate the approach through orientation studies, interior sightline reviews, energy analysis and applicable code requirements rather than copying the window height.
Design the envelope for cleaning and repair
Busy clinics need surfaces and assemblies that can withstand frequent cleaning and occasional damage. Ask how each exterior material will be washed, patched, replaced and matched years later. If a rainscreen is used, document the drainage plane, flashings, vents, transitions and inspection responsibilities; the cavity only works as intended when those details are continuous.
Keep cost decisions tied to the whole project
The C.W. Williams team connected local masonry sourcing with transportation and manufacturing costs. A similar decision should include freight, lead time, installation labor, scaffolding, replacement units and maintenance—not just the initial price per square foot.
What this case study can—and cannot—prove
This project demonstrates a coherent design response for one community health center: expanded services, a welcoming but restrained civic presence, natural light balanced with security, durable masonry, and a rainscreen strategy for a humid climate. It also shows how a client’s concern about dignity can become a concrete brief for architects and builders.
It cannot establish a universal healthcare-design standard or prove that a particular masonry product, color scheme or window arrangement improves health outcomes. The available sources report the facility, the team’s rationale and the stated design intent. Measured patient outcomes, comparative construction costs and long-term envelope performance are outside those reports.
A practical briefing checklist for a new community clinic
- Define the experience the building should offer patients, including the messages it must avoid.
- List every service that should be available on site and map how patients move between them.
- Set daylight, privacy, security and accessibility goals before finalizing window locations.
- Evaluate exterior materials for impact resistance, cleanability, repair and replacement logistics.
- For humid or rainy climates, draw the complete drainage and ventilation path and assign inspection responsibilities.
- Test the building’s scale, colors and setbacks against the surrounding neighborhood.
- Separate design intent from claims that require post-occupancy measurement.
- Record precise area, opening dates and service counts so future descriptions do not blur rounded figures with exact ones.
The C.W. Williams Community Health Center’s strongest lesson is that hope can be designed as a set of specific priorities. A building feels hopeful when its appearance, circulation, materials and maintenance plan consistently tell patients that they belong there—and when those ambitions are matched by technically sound construction.
