How Solar Roof Tiles Work—and How They Differ From Rooftop Solar Panels

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Solar roof tiles are photovoltaic roofing materials. Their cells turn sunlight into direct-current (DC) electricity, which an inverter converts to alternating current (AC) for a house, battery or utility grid. The fundamental solar process is the same as for conventional panels; the construction is different. Tiles or shingles form part of the weatherproof roof covering, while conventional modules sit above a separate roof on racks.

That distinction affects when the system makes sense, how the roof is built, how repairs are handled and how you should compare quotes. Integrated solar is most relevant for new construction or a roof that already needs replacement. For a sound existing roof, conventional panels are often the simpler proposal to evaluate. The right choice depends on the actual roof, shade, local rules, electrical design, service availability and whole-project price—not on a tile’s wattage alone.

What solar roof tiles are

Solar roof tiles and solar shingles are examples of building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV). Instead of attaching a photovoltaic module above finished roofing, the photovoltaic material is incorporated into, or substitutes for, part of the roof covering. A roof may contain both power-producing pieces and matching non-generating pieces so the entire surface has a consistent appearance. Tesla’s Solar Roof installation manual describes this arrangement.

From sunlight to household electricity

Each solar tile contains photovoltaic cells. When sunlight reaches those cells, they produce DC electricity. Tiles are electrically connected into modules or strings; the strings feed an inverter, which produces AC electricity compatible with household circuits and the utility grid. Tesla says its system “functions in fundamentally the same way as traditional roof-mounted PV systems”—a description of the electrical principle, not a claim that every product has identical hardware.

A grid-connected system can serve loads in the house first. Depending on the design and local interconnection rules, surplus power can charge a battery or be exported to the grid. A roof tile does not automatically provide power during an outage: backup requires compatible storage, controls, a properly configured inverter and any utility-required equipment. Tesla’s design and construction guide explains that the electrical configuration determines these functions.

How an integrated solar roof is installed

Exact methods vary by product, roof design and jurisdiction, but roofing-integrated PV combines roofing and electrical work. A 2023 NREL field study describes a workflow that includes staging, roof preparation, underlayment and flashings, PV installation, then wiring and monitoring. A qualified contractor should provide the product-specific sequence and identify who is responsible for each trade.

  1. Survey and design: The contractor measures roof planes, pitch, structural condition, shade, setbacks, fire-access paths and electrical-service capacity. The design should show which areas generate and which use non-generating tiles.
  2. Remove or prepare the roof: If this is a reroof, old covering is removed as required and damaged decking or framing is corrected. New construction follows the builder’s sheathing and weatherproofing schedule.
  3. Install underlayment and flashings: Water-shedding layers, valleys, penetrations and edge details are completed before the generating surfaces are placed. These details are part of the roof’s durability, not cosmetic accessories.
  4. Place roofing-integrated components: Non-generating tiles and solar tiles or shingles are installed in the manufacturer’s pattern. The crew must preserve drainage, attachment requirements and clearances around vents, skylights and roof edges.
  5. Build electrical strings: The generating pieces are connected in the specified series or parallel arrangement. Wiring is routed through approved pathways, with rapid-shutdown and other code equipment where required.
  6. Install inverter and optional storage: The inverter, disconnects, monitoring hardware and battery (if selected) are mounted and connected to the service equipment. Backup circuits must be deliberately designed rather than assumed.
  7. Inspect, commission and monitor: Roofing, electrical and utility inspections precede permission to operate. Commissioning verifies polarity, insulation, shutdown behavior, inverter settings and monitoring data.

Because two trades meet on one roof, ask whether the installer performs both scopes or coordinates a roofing subcontractor and an electrical subcontractor. The contract should assign responsibility for leaks, failed tiles, wiring defects and service calls.

Solar roof tiles versus conventional rooftop panels

Both technologies use photovoltaic cells and an inverter. Their practical differences come from where the PV equipment sits and what happens to the underlying roof.

Comparison Solar tiles or shingles Conventional rooftop panels
Roof relationship Forms part of the weatherproof roof covering; non-generating pieces may surround the PV pieces. Separate modules mounted above an existing roof covering with rails, attachments and flashings.
Best project timing Most naturally evaluated during new construction or a planned reroof. Can be considered on an existing roof after structural, roofing and electrical inspection.
Appearance Low-profile, roof-integrated surface intended to resemble a finished roof. Visible framed modules and mounting hardware above the roof.
Roof work Roofing installation and PV installation are one coordinated project. Roof remains a separate trade; the solar crew penetrates and attaches to it.
Future roof replacement Removing or replacing sections can involve both roofing and electrical procedures. Panels and racking generally must be removed before the roof is replaced.
Output comparison Must be modeled for the installed tile layout and roof planes; an individual tile rating is not annual generation. Must be modeled for module count, inverter design, roof planes and shading; nameplate watts are not annual generation.
Service Requires personnel able to diagnose both roofing and PV components. Roof and PV service can often be scheduled as separate scopes, subject to installer availability.

How much energy can a solar roof produce?

Use an annual, roof-specific model

Production depends on usable area, orientation, tilt, shading through the year, local weather, temperature, wiring and inverter losses, roof obstructions and utility operating limits. A contractor should provide modeled annual kilowatt-hours for the proposed roof, with assumptions for degradation and any export limit. Compare that figure with the same home’s annual load and with a conventional-panel design using the same roof and shading assumptions.

Understand tile ratings and marketing comparisons

GAF lists a rating of 57 watts per Timberline Solar ES 2 energy shingle on its current product page. That is a manufacturer-reported nameplate rating for one shingle, not a prediction of annual household energy. GAF also states that the product delivers 23% more energy per shingle on its homeowner page. The page’s comparison basis should be confirmed before treating that percentage as a universal result or applying it to other roof designs. See the GAF solar roofing page and GAF homeowner page.

There is no current independent, like-for-like study establishing that all solar tiles produce more or less energy than all conventional panels. A panel system may use more of a roof plane, while a tile system may fit an architectural layout differently; only a site-specific design resolves that trade-off.

What the project costs—and how to compare value

Request a single whole-project price for each option. Include the work that would be required even without solar, so a roof replacement is not unfairly charged entirely to the energy system.

Cost item to identify Questions for the proposal
Roofing Does the price include tear-off, decking repairs, underlayment, flashings, ventilation, edges and non-generating tiles or shingles?
PV equipment How many generating pieces, what inverter architecture, what monitoring and what rapid-shutdown equipment are included?
Electrical work Are service upgrades, trenching, disconnects, utility fees and permit fees included or allowances?
Storage and backup Is a battery included, and which circuits remain energized during an outage?
Labor and commissioning Who performs roofing, electrical and inspection work, and who corrects failed inspections?
Future service What are the labor rates, response area and replacement process for a failed tile, inverter or leak?

GAF says its Timberline Solar product costs are comparable to a new roof plus conventional solar panels. That is a manufacturer statement, not an independent market-wide price study; review the GAF costs and incentives FAQ for the company’s qualification.

NREL’s study discusses possible labor and material savings from combining roof and PV work, but reports that roofing-integrated products had not yet realized those savings in the U.S. market it examined. The article cites 6.9 worker-hours per kilowatt for conventional rooftop PV from an earlier study; the year of that earlier study is not specified in the cited passage, so it should not be presented as a 2023 measurement. No current independent installed-price, payback or output figure applies to every product or location.

When integration can be financially sensible

  • The roof is at the end of its useful life and would otherwise be replaced before panels are installed.
  • Planning, permits and mobilization can be combined for a new build or major reroof.
  • The appearance or preservation of a roofline has substantial value to the owner or project.
  • The integrated design provides enough usable generating area for the home’s load after accounting for shade and roof geometry.

When conventional panels may be the clearer choice

  • The existing roof is sound, has substantial remaining life and needs no major work.
  • The roof has limited usable area, complex obstructions or shading that makes the integrated layout inefficient.
  • Local contractors cannot provide both qualified roofing and PV service for the integrated product.
  • The conventional proposal has a materially lower whole-project cost for the same modeled annual energy.

Roof condition, codes and local availability

Do not install any solar system over an unassessed roof. A contractor should document deck condition, structural loading, moisture damage, fire setbacks, wind and snow requirements, and the age and condition of existing roofing. Integrated products may require approved components and trained installers; conventional racking has its own attachment and flashing requirements.

Ask whether installers in your area are certified or authorized for the named product, whether they hold the required roofing and electrical licenses, and which company remains available after the installation business changes. Local utility rules determine interconnection, export limits, meter changes and permission to operate. Incentives and tax treatment also vary by jurisdiction and can change; have the installer and a qualified tax professional confirm eligibility rather than assuming a national rule applies to your address.

Warranties, leaks and repairs

Read coverage as several warranties, not one headline number. Request the actual documents for:

  • Roofing and weatherization: coverage for water intrusion, materials, flashing and workmanship, including exclusions for alterations by other contractors.
  • PV components: coverage for generating tiles or shingles, electrical connectors and measured performance, with the remedy and shipping responsibility stated.
  • Inverter and storage: separate equipment terms, capacity or throughput limits, software requirements and replacement labor.
  • Workmanship: who diagnoses a leak or low-production complaint and whether the roofing and electrical contractors coordinate the visit.

Ask how a damaged tile is isolated, whether a matching non-generating replacement is available, how long a repair normally takes in your region and who pays for temporary weather protection. For a conventional array, clarify panel removal and reinstallation costs if the roof later needs replacement.

Questions to put in competing bids

  1. What is the modeled annual energy for this exact roof, and what shading, degradation and export assumptions produced it?
  2. What roof work is included even if I choose no solar, and what portion of the price is incremental PV?
  3. Which roof planes generate, which are non-generating, and why was that layout selected?
  4. Who holds responsibility for underlayment, flashing, leaks, wiring, monitoring and inspection corrections?
  5. What inverter, shutdown equipment, service upgrade and battery configuration are included?
  6. What happens during a grid outage, and which circuits are backed up?
  7. Which warranties apply to roofing, PV, inverter, storage and labor, and who administers each claim?
  8. Are you certified for this product in my jurisdiction, and where is the nearest service team?
  9. What utility approvals, permits and fees remain after contract signing?

The practical decision

Choose the option that delivers the required roof performance and modeled annual energy at an acceptable whole-project cost, with a service path you can use locally. Solar tiles are not a different kind of sunlight conversion; they are a different way of constructing the roof around photovoltaic equipment. If you are already replacing the roof or building a home, obtain an integrated-roof proposal alongside a conventional-panel proposal. If the roof is sound, start with the conventional design and compare it against any integrated alternative using the same load, roof, shading, utility and service assumptions.
