Start by checking the waste authority that serves your address. Confirm that it accepts debris from your own do-it-yourself project, which materials are allowed, how they must be contained or bundled, the quantity and weight limits, and the collection day and set-out time. Rules can change by city, borough, service area, collection stream, and project type. Debris produced by a professional contractor is often excluded from household collection and must be removed by that contractor.
Once eligibility is confirmed, separate materials when required, remove or secure sharp hazards, use only an approved container or bundle, and arrange a municipal drop-off, transfer station, landfill, approved hauler, or private contractor for anything oversized, excessive, hazardous, or excluded.

1. Identify the authority and service for your address
Construction-debris rules are local rather than national. A city may operate more than one collection stream, and a borough or service area may have different limits from the one next door. Before carrying anything to the curb, use the authority’s current waste page, service-area lookup, telephone line, or collection calendar.

- Confirm which department or contractor serves the property.
- Check whether the service accepts homeowner DIY debris at all.
- Choose the correct stream, such as curbside debris, bulk items, recycling, or a drop-off program.
- Record the collection day, set-out deadline, placement location, and any booking requirement.
Montréal, for example, directs residents to its borough-specific Info-Collectes schedule. A limit published for one Montréal collection stream cannot safely be applied to another borough or material category.

2. Establish who generated the debris
Homeowner DIY work
Many municipal services are intended for small amounts from non-professional home-improvement work. Keep a clear record that the work was done by the resident if the service asks about eligibility, and stay within the published quantity limits.
Contractor-generated waste
Do not place a contractor’s renovation or demolition waste in a household collection pile unless the authority expressly permits it. Greensboro’s small-project service excludes debris from professional contractors. Jacksonville likewise says contractor-generated debris must be removed by the contractor. Put that obligation in the written scope of work before a project begins; otherwise, you may be left with a load the municipal crew will refuse.
3. Check the material list before you load a container
Read the accepted and excluded-material list line by line. Construction debris can include wood, drywall, flooring, masonry, roofing, glass, soil, fixtures, and packaging, but a city may direct each category to a different route. Some items require special handling or are not accepted in ordinary household service.

- Look for separate instructions for treated or chemically contaminated materials, asbestos, contaminated soil, and other special waste.
- Check whether large items must be scheduled under bulk-item rules rather than placed with loose debris.
- Ask the receiving facility about acceptance before transporting anything that is not clearly listed.
New York City’s DIY guidance identifies materials that may require special handling and directs residents to bulk-item rules for large objects that will not fit in a bin. Seattle’s third-party hauling rules exclude special waste such as asbestos and contaminated soil; those rules are for that hauling program, not a universal curbside standard.
4. Select a container or bundle that your service actually allows
Container shape, handles, lids, capacity, filled weight, and bundle dimensions can all determine whether a crew collects the material. A contractor’s woven bag, an open box, a wheelbarrow, or an ordinary trash cart may be rejected even when the debris itself is acceptable.

A handled, lidded container is a useful category for small projects, but buying one does not guarantee collection. Match its specifications to the local rule first. For example, Greensboro allows up to two personal 32-gallon containers with attached handles and detachable lids, each weighing no more than 50 pounds when loaded. Its service does not collect the green trash cart, bags, boxes, or wheelbarrows.
Montréal describes a particular collection stream allowing handled garbage cans with lids up to 150 litres and a filled weight of 25 kilograms, or tied construction-waste bundles no more than 50 centimetres in diameter, 1 metre long, and 25 kilograms. That stream prohibits plastic bags, including construction bags. Other Montréal collections and boroughs have different volume limits.

5. Keep the load within every limit
Measure the container when empty and weigh a representative full load if the rule includes a weight cap. A container that is technically the right size can still be refused if it is too heavy for safe lifting. Do not overfill to make the lid bulge or leave pieces protruding.
Limits can apply simultaneously to the number of containers, each container’s weight, the maximum dimension of an item, the total weekly allowance, and the number of collection events. Jacksonville’s cited rules include a five-foot maximum dimension and a 40-pound maximum, while weekly or every-other-week allowances vary by service area. Verify the service area before relying on those figures.
| Authority or program | Published example | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Greensboro, North Carolina | Up to two personal 32-gallon containers; attached handles and detachable lids; maximum 50 pounds per loaded container | Small non-professional DIY projects; no green trash cart, bags, boxes, or wheelbarrows; contractor debris excluded |
| Montréal | Handled cans with lids up to 150 litres and 25 kilograms, or tied bundles up to 50 centimetres in diameter, 1 metre long, and 25 kilograms | Applies to a described collection stream; plastic bags are prohibited there; borough instructions differ; page updated January 13, 2026 |
| Jacksonville, Florida | Cited rules include a five-foot maximum dimension and 40-pound maximum; allowance differs by service area | Confirm the address’s service area and current schedule |
6. Sort materials and use the required drop-off boxes
Sorting is not merely an organizational preference when the authority requires separate streams. Keep masonry, soil, roofing, metal, wood, drywall, glass, and other categories apart whenever the collection page or receiving facility directs you to do so.

Milwaukee’s drop-off centers require shingles, brick and block, concrete and stones, and dirt to be completely separated into designated boxes. Combining those materials can lead to rejection at the gate or require you to unload and resort the vehicle. Use separate, clearly identified containers during the project rather than trying to sort a mixed pile on collection day.
7. Neutralize nails, screws, glass, and other sharp hazards
Inspect every piece before it goes into a container. Remove exposed nails and screws where practical, bend or cap protruding fasteners, and place sharp metal so it cannot pierce a bag or injure a worker. Montréal specifically advises removing nails, screws, and sharp metal.
Follow special glass instructions. New York City advises taping large glass, double-bagging broken glass, and removing exposed nails and other sharp objects. Use rigid protection for large panes where directed, and label or isolate broken fragments so a collector does not encounter loose shards. Never place an unprotected pane or a bag of loose glass where it can be handled by hand.
Close lids, tie bundles securely, and check the area around the set-out point. Debris must not block sidewalks, driveways, hydrants, doors, sight lines, or access needed by collection equipment.
8. Set out debris at the correct time and location
Follow the authority’s schedule rather than a neighbor’s routine. Some services collect weekly, some every other week, and some require an appointment. Set material out only during the permitted window; early placement can violate local rules or expose pedestrians to hazards.

- Keep it accessible to the crew without blocking pedestrian or vehicle movement.
- Make sure the lid is closed and bundles remain tied until collection.
- Remove rejected material promptly and contact the authority if the reason for refusal is unclear.
9. Choose another route for excluded or excessive material
Curbside service is only one disposal route. If the load exceeds a limit, contains excluded material, or comes from a contractor, ask about a municipal drop-off center, transfer station, landfill, approved recycling facility, or private hauler. Greensboro identifies the White Street Landfill or Transfer Station as alternatives for residents. Milwaukee provides drop-off centers for listed construction materials.
Before loading a vehicle, confirm the facility’s accepted materials, sorting requirements, hours, vehicle rules, identification requirements, and fees. A facility may accept clean concrete but reject mixed loads, or accept a material only during particular hours. For private hauling, verify that the hauler is authorized for the material and understand whether the quoted service includes loading, transport, disposal charges, and any weight-based fee.
10. Compare collection routes before starting the project
When you have more than one option, compare the routes using the same questions:
- Eligibility: Is the route open to homeowner DIY work, or only to residents, contractors, or approved haulers?
- Materials: Are your exact materials accepted, and must they be separated?
- Limits: What are the container count, volume, weight, item-size, and total-load limits?
- Presentation: Is a lidded can, tied bundle, designated box, pickup appointment, or specific vehicle required?
- Timing: What is the curbside set-out window or facility operating schedule?
- Cost: Is there a municipal fee, tipping charge, disposal surcharge, or private-hauler quote?
Published sources do not establish a comparable national price. Obtain the current local fee schedule or quote instead of relying on a generalized figure.

Greensboro
The city’s small-project service illustrates a tightly defined curbside allowance: two personal 32-gallon containers, each with an attached handle and detachable lid and each no heavier than 50 pounds. Green trash carts, bags, boxes, wheelbarrows, and professional-contractor debris are excluded. Residents with more material can ask about the White Street Landfill or Transfer Station.

Montréal
Montréal’s English guidance, updated January 13, 2026, presents borough-specific instructions. In one described stream, handled cans with lids may hold up to 150 litres and 25 kilograms, or tied bundles may be up to 50 centimetres in diameter, 1 metre long, and 25 kilograms. Plastic bags, including construction bags, are prohibited in that stream. Select the borough’s own instructions before preparing the load.
New York City
Non-professional small-scale DIY debris may qualify for free curbside removal. Large items that do not fit a bin fall under bulk-item rules. The city’s safety directions include taping large glass, double-bagging broken glass, and removing exposed nails and sharp objects.
Jacksonville
The city’s cited rules vary by service area and include a five-foot maximum dimension and 40-pound maximum. Containerize materials separately when possible, verify the service area, and keep contractor-generated debris with the contractor responsible for the work.

Milwaukee requires complete separation of shingles, brick and block, concrete and stones, and dirt into designated drop-off boxes. Seattle’s third-party hauling rules distinguish labeled recycling containers from disposal containers and do not apply to residents self-hauling their own waste. They also exclude special waste such as asbestos and contaminated soil. These examples describe their specific programs, not a general rule for every city.
