Published thermal-conductivity results range from 0.037 to 0.073 W/m·K, with several studies near the values reported for cellulose. That overlap does not prove that rice husk performs as well as a commercial cellulose or fiberglass product in a real wall or roof. For a construction decision, compare a specific product’s declared R-value, density, thickness, moisture conditioning, fire documentation and code acceptance—not isolated numbers from unlike laboratory prototypes.
What “rice-husk insulation” means
Rice husk is the hard outer shell removed during rice milling. Researchers have used it in several forms: bonded boards, pulped panels, composites with recycled newspaper cellulose, and loose or blown fibers. These are different materials, made with different binders, densities, particle sizes and installation methods. Consequently, “rice-husk insulation” has no single conductivity, R-value or fire rating.

That distinction matters when comparing it with fiberglass and cellulose. Fiberglass and cellulose are established commercial categories with products designed, tested and labeled for particular assemblies. The rice-husk studies considered here are prototypes or specific research configurations. Their results show technical potential, not a universal specification or proof of broad retail availability.

Thermal conductivity (usually written as k, in watts per metre-kelvin) describes heat flow through a material under stated test conditions. Lower conductivity generally means less heat passes through a given thickness. In a building, however, the useful comparison is the assembly’s declared R-value at a specified thickness, density, orientation and installation. A material number from one test cannot be converted into a reliable installed rating without those details.

Rice-husk and cellulose composite: 0.04 W/m·K
Marín-Calvo, González-Serrud and James-Rivas (2023) made boards from recycled newspaper cellulose and rice husks and tested them under ASTM C177. The proposed composite reported thermal conductivity of 0.04 W/m·K. The same article describes typical cellulose-fiber conductivity near 0.040 W/m·K and cites selected recycled-paper board values of 0.034–0.039 W/m·K.
Those figures indicate overlap in that study context. They do not show that pure rice husk equals commercial cellulose: the tested material was a particular composite, and the cellulose figures are reference values assembled in the article. Production process, raw-material origin, installation and humidity can all change the result.
Other rice-husk results span a wide range
| Study configuration | Reported result | What the number represents |
|---|---|---|
| Rice-husk panels made by a pulping method (2024) | 0.037–0.042 W/m·K | Conductivity range for that panel recipe and test method |
| Blown rice-husk fiber in an evaluated modular-housing system (2025) | 0.040 W/m·K | Average conductivity for the studied blown fiber; not a universal loose-fill rating |
| Rice-husk insulation panel (2024) | 0.073 W/(m·K) | Conductivity for a different panel formulation and test design |
| Rice-husk panel life-cycle study (2018) | 0.59 m²K/W thermal resistance | Resistance of that studied panel configuration, not a general product value |
The spread—from 0.037 to 0.073 W/m·K—shows why averaging these results would be misleading. Density, porosity, binder content, moisture, specimen thickness and heat-flow direction can all contribute to the difference. The 2025 study also reported a modeled system U-value of 0.17 W/m²K and modeled heating demand of 9.56 kWh/m²-year for its modular-housing assembly. Those are system and simulation results, not standalone insulation-product ratings.

How it compares with cellulose
Cellulose has a defined commercial form
Commercial cellulose is sold as loose fill and as semi-rigid boards or mats. Its recycled-paper fibers are hygroscopic, meaning they absorb and release moisture. The 2023 article notes that moisture absorption can change cellulose conductivity. Product labels therefore specify installation density, settled thickness or blowing procedures, and often require an air-control and moisture-control strategy in the assembly.
Rice husk may overlap thermally, but evidence is less mature
Several rice-husk prototypes sit close to the cited 0.040 W/m·K cellulose figure. That is encouraging for research and product development, but it is not a head-to-head commercial comparison. No controlled test in the available evidence used equivalent rice-husk, cellulose and fiberglass products at the same thickness, density, conditioning and test method.
Cellulose also has a longer record of installation details, labeling and field practice. Rice-husk materials may require different binders, vapor-open or vapor-closed detailing, and protection against settling or moisture. Until a specific product supplies those instructions and a verified declaration, it should be treated as a prototype material rather than a drop-in substitute for cellulose.

How it compares with fiberglass
Fiberglass is an established commercial insulation category, but the available evidence does not provide a robust, standardized fiberglass benchmark against the rice-husk studies. One small student-produced comparison appears inconsistent and is only an abstract, so it is not a sound basis for ranking materials.

Compare values only when the test method, mean temperature, density, orientation and moisture conditioning are equivalent. A conductivity number from a thin laboratory panel should not be set beside a fiberglass batt’s labeled R-value as though they were interchangeable measurements.
Moisture, settling and long-term durability
Moisture changes thermal behavior
Moisture is both a thermal and a durability issue. The cellulose discussion identifies hygroscopic absorption as a factor that can alter conductivity. Rice-husk studies likewise call for testing under changing and wet conditions. The 2024 panel paper identifies rainy-season durability and permeability as future work, while the 2025 blown-fiber study calls for long-term evaluation of degradation under variable moisture.

What is not established
The available studies do not establish comparative service life, wet-climate suitability, drying time, mold resistance, pest resistance or settled-density behavior for a standardized rice-husk product. Do not fill a wall cavity with loose agricultural husks based on these papers. An insulation assembly needs a designed air barrier, water-shedding layer, vapor-control strategy, drainage path and a material that the manufacturer approves for that use.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fire performance: prototype measurements are not code ratings
Two rice-husk studies report a smoldering velocity of 3.40 mm/min for their tested materials or systems: the 2024 pulped-panel work and the 2025 blown-fiber modular-housing study. A smoldering measurement describes that test specimen under its test conditions. It does not mean the material is fireproof, fire-safe, or accepted by a building code.
Fire classification depends on the complete assembly, test standard, specimen construction, ignition scenario, flame spread, smoke and applicable jurisdiction. A supplier should provide the exact reports and classification for the product and installation you intend to use.

Cellulose also requires product-specific fire documentation. In a 1984 NIST study, James R. Lawson reported: “Results from these tests show that environmental exposure can have a significant effect on the fire performance of cellulosic insulation materials and indicates that long term fire protection provided by fire retardant compounds may be limited.” That finding concerns the loose-fill cellulose materials tested at the time; it is a caution to verify current product documentation, not a current rating for every cellulose product.
Environmental claims need a defined boundary
Rice husk is an agricultural by-product, so incorporating it into a board or fiber can divert residue into a building material. Cellulose can use recycled paper. Both feedstocks may reduce demand for virgin resources, but feedstock alone does not determine life-cycle impact.
A 2018 study of recycled-waste panels reported favorable production-stage life-cycle results for its rice-husk panel and measured a thermal resistance of 0.59 m²K/W. That conclusion applies to the panel, processes and comparison boundary in that study. It is not a whole-life victory over fiberglass or cellulose. A fair project comparison should include binder and additive manufacture, process energy, transport distance, installation waste, service life, replacement, maintenance and end-of-life treatment.
Buying and specifying: a practical checklist
If you are considering an experimental or newly commercialized rice-husk material, request written evidence before designing it into the building.
- Identify the exact product form. Record whether it is a board, mat, bonded panel, loose fill or blown fiber. “Rice husk” by itself is not a specification.
- Request thermal data under comparable conditions. Ask for declared R-value or conductivity, test standard, mean temperature, specimen density, thickness, moisture conditioning and heat-flow direction. For loose fill, obtain the installed and settled density and thickness, not only a laboratory value.
- Check the assembly, not just the insulation. Confirm the product’s permitted wall, roof or floor applications, required air barrier, vapor retarder, wind-wash protection, framing spacing and cladding clearances.
- Obtain fire documentation. Look for the applicable flame-spread, smoke, fire-resistance or other jurisdictionally required report for the complete assembly. Do not substitute the 3.40 mm/min prototype smoldering figure for a classification.
- Plan for water and drying. Ask how the material handles construction moisture, leaks, seasonal humidity and drying. Detail bulk-water control and provide a way for the assembly to dry in the direction allowed by the climate and design.
- Verify code acceptance and supply. Confirm with the building official, designer and insurer that the exact product is accepted. Check current local availability, lead time, installer training and replacement material; a research prototype may not have a dependable supply chain.
- Compare whole-life assumptions. Request the declared binder, additives, transport distance, expected service life and end-of-life route before making an environmental claim.
Decision guide: which material fits which situation?
| Situation | Evidence-based approach |
|---|---|
| You need a code-documented product now | Use an established cellulose or fiberglass product with current manufacturer data and local approval. The evidence here does not verify a standardized rice-husk product market. |
| You are evaluating a research or pilot project | Rice husk may be worth testing, provided the project measures conductivity, density, moisture response, durability and fire performance for the exact formulation and assembly. |
| You are choosing on thermal conductivity alone | Do not decide from a headline number. Compare declared R-value at equal thickness, density, installation and conditioning. |
| You are choosing for low embodied impact | Ask for a product-specific life-cycle assessment that includes processing, binder, transport, service life and disposal. Residue or recycled feedstock is only one input. |
What the evidence supports—and what it does not
- Rice-husk composites and panels can provide measurable thermal insulation.
- Some reported conductivities overlap with cited cellulose values near 0.040 W/m·K.
- Reported rice-husk results vary substantially, including 0.073 W/(m·K) in one panel study.
- Prototype smoldering results do not establish a general fire classification.
- Moisture response and long-term durability need further testing.
- The available sources do not establish a reliable three-way, equivalent test against commercial fiberglass and cellulose.
- No current, standardized, broadly purchasable rice-husk insulation product was verified.
The Bottom Line
Rice husk is a promising insulation feedstock, not yet a proven one-for-one replacement for fiberglass or cellulose. Treat each formulation as a separate product, demand comparable thermal, moisture and fire documentation, and obtain code approval before specifying it in a building.
