How Platform Screen Doors Work With Driverless Metro Trains

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Platform screen doors are movable barriers fixed along a metro platform edge. In a driverless train operation, the train-control system brings the vehicle to a designated stopping position, verifies that it is correctly berthed, and coordinates the train doors with the matching platform openings. The barriers open only under the conditions defined for that installation, then close before the train is authorized to depart. This keeps passengers separated from the track area while the train is moving or absent.

The doors are not what makes a metro driverless. Driverless operation, train protection, automatic train operation, vehicle-door controls, platform barriers, signaling and station procedures form one safety-related system. Automation can make stopping more repeatable and therefore improve door alignment, but safe operation still depends on engineered interlocks, testing, berthing rules and local operating procedures.

What platform screen doors do

A platform screen door (PSD) is a line of movable panels installed along the platform edge. When closed, the panels form a barrier between waiting passengers and the track. When a train has stopped at the correct location, selected panels open so passengers can board and alight through the train’s own doors.

The barrier changes the platform from an open edge into a controlled access point. Passengers can reach the train only when a train is present, correctly positioned and cleared for door operation. Once boarding is complete, the platform panels close and the track is separated from the public area again.

The term is used broadly. Depending on the design, a barrier may cover the full height of the station, stop below the ceiling, or consist of shorter gates. Those differences affect ventilation, smoke movement, noise, climate control, structural loading and the way the equipment interfaces with the train and signaling systems.

“Platform screen doors extend to the ceiling, enclosing the track and tunnel area completely,” the U.S. Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) states when describing full-height screen doors.

How the door sequence works

The exact sensors, communications links and authorization logic vary by metro. The following sequence describes the common operating concept rather than a universal wiring diagram.

  1. The train approaches and brakes

Automatic train operation controls the approach and braking profile. The vehicle is brought toward a designated platform stopping point, where the positions of its passenger doors correspond to the platform-door openings.

  2. The train reaches its berthing position

Before a door command is accepted, the system must establish that the train is stopped within the permitted berthing zone. Driverless control supports repeatable stopping, but the operating agency still needs rules and controls for a train that stops short, overruns, loses position information or cannot establish a safe berth.

  3. Position and door conditions are checked

Platform barriers are described as opening only when the train is correctly positioned. The installation checks the conditions defined by its safety design, which can include train presence, stop confirmation, door status and authorization from the train-control or signaling system. The particular sensors and logic are project-specific and should not be assumed from another metro.

  4. Train and platform doors open together

Once the opening command is authorized, the train doors and the corresponding platform doors operate in synchronization. The FRA describes barriers opening after the train has stopped; India’s National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) likewise describes its platform doors as synchronized with train doors.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  5. Passengers board and leave

The open doorway provides a controlled passage between the train and platform. The barrier does not replace the train door: both assemblies remain part of the access path, and their states must remain known to the control system.

  6. Closing is checked

After the dwell and door-close command, the train doors and platform barriers close. The control system checks the conditions required by the installation before departure. Audible or visible warnings may be provided; the precise warning devices and timing are defined by the project and its operating rules.

  7. Departure is authorized

Only after the required door and signaling conditions are satisfied can the train leave. When the train moves away, the closed barriers continue to separate the platform from the track.

Why driverless trains help alignment

A driverless metro uses automatic systems for functions that a driver would otherwise perform, including speed regulation, stopping and sometimes door commands. Consistent control of the final approach can reduce variation in where a train stops. That repeatability helps line up each train door with the corresponding opening in the platform barrier.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It is important not to overstate this relationship. Platform doors do not make a train driverless, and automatic operation does not eliminate the need for a safe-berthing design. A train can still be affected by equipment faults, degraded operation, braking differences or an obstruction. APTA recommended practice addresses safe berthing and train-door operation because improper stopping can create a gap, misalignment or other door hazard. Operators therefore specify permitted stopping tolerances, fallback modes and procedures for abnormal berthing.

Barrier types and what changes between them

The FRA distinguishes barriers primarily by height and the portion of the track area they enclose. None is universally best; the appropriate form depends on the station, tunnel, ventilation and operating context.

Barrier form Physical coverage Potential design effects What it does not establish
Full-height platform screen doors Extend to the ceiling and enclose the track and tunnel area completely. May help retain heated or cooled air and may reduce platform noise from trains or tunnels. They provide a substantial physical separation from the track. They do not guarantee a particular energy, acoustic or safety result at every station.
Full-height platform edge doors Rise to full door height but do not reach the ceiling. Provide a high barrier while leaving more of the station volume connected to the track-side space than a ceiling-height enclosure. Their ventilation, smoke-control and noise behavior depends on the station design.
Platform gates Shorter barriers that do not span the full height of the platform edge. Can control access at the doorway while imposing a different physical and environmental arrangement from full-height systems. A gate is not equivalent to a ceiling-height enclosure, and its performance must be assessed in the actual installation.

These categories are useful for comparing physical coverage, but a procurement decision also has to consider platform geometry, train fleet dimensions, tunnel ventilation, fire and life-safety strategy, passenger flow, noise conditions, maintenance access and the signaling interface.

The integration that makes the system safe

Vehicle and platform doors

The train and platform assemblies must agree on which doors are available, when they may open and whether they are fully closed. Synchronization prevents a platform opening from being exposed when no train door is aligned behind it. The interface also has to handle a train that is present but not correctly positioned.

Signaling and train control

Platform barriers are not an isolated station appliance. EN 17168:2021, summarized by NEN, addresses interfaces with signaling and vehicles, control-system integrity, synchronization, testing and operational performance. A metro project defines the messages, permissions and failure responses in its system architecture rather than relying on a generic door controller.

Fixed structures and emergency access

The same standard summary covers fixed structures, movable passenger doors and gates, emergency doors, driver-access doors and platform-end doors. These elements have different functions and hazards. For example, an emergency or end-of-platform arrangement must be coordinated with evacuation and staff-access procedures without creating an unintended route to the track.

Warnings and human factors

Audible and visible alerts are identified among the barrier-system considerations. Their purpose, placement and timing are selected for the station environment and passenger population. A warning device is only one layer of protection; the physical barrier, control logic, supervision and operating procedure must work together.

What happens when something is not normal

A safe design anticipates conditions in which the ordinary open-and-close sequence cannot be completed. The exact response belongs to the operator’s rule book and the project’s safety case, but the design questions are consistent:

  • What happens if the train stops outside the permitted berthing zone?
  • How is a door prevented from opening when no correctly aligned train is present?
  • How is a trapped object, obstruction or door fault detected and reported?
  • What indication does the control room receive when a barrier remains open or fails to prove closed?
  • How can staff secure the platform and remove passengers safely during a degraded or emergency operation?

These are not solved by assuming that the driverless train will simply retry its stop. Procedures, supervision and recovery modes must be tested with the installed equipment. A metro-specific operating manual is therefore more authoritative for passengers and staff than a general description of platform doors.

Construction and project-design considerations

For a construction team, the visible sliding panels are only one part of the work. The platform edge, supporting structure, power supplies, control cabinets, communications, train interfaces and maintenance clearances have to be coordinated before installation.

Set-out and tolerances

Door openings must match the final train fleet and the surveyed platform alignment. The design has to account for platform curvature, tolerances in the civil structure, vehicle stopping tolerances and any movement or settlement allowed by the project. A door line that is acceptable on a drawing can become unsafe if the berth, platform edge or train-door positions are not controlled together.

Interfaces and sequencing

Platform barriers are commissioned alongside signaling, train control, vehicle doors and station systems. Construction sequencing should preserve access for testing and adjustment rather than treating the doors as a late architectural fit-out. Interface definitions, isolation points and responsibility boundaries should be agreed before integrated tests begin.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Testing and acceptance

EN 17168:2021’s coverage of testing and system integrity reflects the need for more than a powered opening demonstration. Tests should exercise normal synchronization, incorrect or incomplete berthing, loss of communications, door obstruction, emergency access and the indications available to operators. The acceptance evidence belongs to the specific project and jurisdiction.

Maintainability

Panels, drives, sensors and control equipment need inspection and safe access without exposing passengers or workers to the track. The station layout must provide room for maintenance activities, isolation and recovery while preserving the required platform circulation. Replacement parts and procedures should be based on the installed system, not on a generic assumption that all platform doors use the same components.

Benefits and trade-offs

Potential benefits

  • Physical separation can help keep passengers out of restricted track areas.
  • Controlled openings can reduce the chance of a passenger reaching the track when no train is correctly positioned.
  • Full-height barriers may help retain heated or cooled air and reduce noise from trains or tunnels, depending on the station design.
  • Repeatable automated stopping can support consistent alignment between train doors and platform openings.

Trade-offs and limits

  • Every barrier installation adds structural, electrical, control and maintenance interfaces.
  • Different barrier heights produce different ventilation, smoke-control and acoustic conditions.
  • Door synchronization depends on the train fleet, signaling and platform equipment working as an integrated system.
  • Safe operation still requires berthing rules, testing, supervision and procedures for faults or degraded service.

The FRA describes these functions qualitatively. No single safety percentage or universal performance figure applies to every metro, so a project should use its own hazard analysis, operating data and approval requirements.

How to explain a specific metro accurately

A general explanation should stop at the common sequence. To describe one named line, identify its barrier type, train-control mode, train fleet, stopping arrangement, door authorization logic and emergency procedures from the operator’s technical or passenger information. Do not assume that a system using driverless trains has the same sensors, communications technology or fallback mode as another system.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Commercial systems can illustrate the architecture. For example, ST Engineering describes an AGIL platform screen door system with train-presence detection and synchronization of door opening and closing, including an option to work with existing signaling. That description is an example of one supplier’s offering, not a universal specification or an endorsement of a procurement choice.

Key points for passengers and project teams

  • Platform doors open because a train is correctly positioned and the integrated control system has authorized access.
  • Train doors and platform barriers must operate together; either one alone is not the complete safety system.
  • Driverless operation improves stopping consistency but does not remove berthing controls or human procedures.
  • “Platform screen door,” “platform edge door” and “platform gate” describe different barrier arrangements.
  • For construction and commissioning, the critical work is the integration of civil, vehicle, signaling, control and safety interfaces.
