In partnership with Prusa Research, Philips Personal Health is testing whether a lost, worn, or broken plastic accessory can be replaced locally instead of forcing the owner to discard an otherwise usable product.
The idea could reduce e-waste by extending product life, but Philips has not publicly provided a Fixables-specific figure for waste avoided, products saved, or carbon emissions reduced. It is best understood as a repairability and product-life-extension experiment—not proof that all Philips products are repairable or that 3D printing is automatically greener.

What Philips Fixables is
Philips Fixables is a Philips Personal Health pilot developed with Prusa Research, the 3D-printing company. Philips describes the program as operating in Czechia and offering free access to 3D-printable files for selected accessory parts. The files may be printed at home or produced through a local 3D-printing service.

The distinction between a digital file and a physical spare part matters. Philips is not promising to mail every replacement component or make every product repairable. Instead, the program uses digital designs to make low-volume, relatively simple plastic accessories available without requiring Philips to manufacture and stock each part centrally.

Philips says the objective is to repair a part rather than replace the whole product when an accessory is lost, worn, or broken, including situations in which the product is outside its warranty. The official description does not establish a universal catalog, a global launch, or coverage for every Philips model.
Philips’ description of the pilot is the primary source for its scope and purpose.
Why a small accessory can create an e-waste problem
A consumer may discard a working shaver, trimmer, toothbrush accessory, or other personal-care product because a small plastic component is missing or damaged. That component might be a comb, cap, clip, holder, guide, cover, or bracket. If an official replacement is unavailable, expensive, or difficult to ship, buying an entirely new product can seem easier.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA printable replacement changes that calculation. A file can be stored and distributed at little cost, while the physical part is made close to the person who needs it. If the replacement fits and lasts, the owner can continue using the original motor, battery, electronics, and housing instead of replacing the complete device.
That is the central e-waste argument behind Fixables: preventing whole-product replacement through a small, locally produced part.

How the Fixables process works
- Identify the complete model number. Do not rely only on a product family name. Regional variants and similar-looking models can use different interfaces, tolerances, or accessories.
- Check whether the part is listed. Fixables covers selected accessories, not every Philips component or model.
- Download the matching file and read its instructions. Confirm the required material, orientation, scale, supports, and any model-specific fitting guidance. Philips’ published material does not provide a universal print profile or setting for every part.
- Choose home printing or a local service. A home printer may make sense for someone who already prints parts. A local service is usually more practical for a one-off replacement.
- Finish and inspect the print. Remove supports if required and check for warping, cracks, rough edges, or incomplete layers.
- Test the fit carefully. Never force a part into place. Confirm that it does not interfere with moving components, electrical contacts, heat, charging, or safe operation.
- Continue using the product only if the part is appropriate. Retain the product documentation and check warranty and safety information before proceeding.
Which parts are suitable—and which are not?
Fixables is most relevant to simple, non-critical accessories such as cosmetic covers, clips, combs, guides, stands, holders, storage accessories, and non-load-bearing brackets. Even in these categories, the exact model and file instructions matter.
Consumers should be especially cautious with parts exposed to:
- High heat or repeated mechanical stress
- Water, cleaning chemicals, or disinfectants
- Skin, food, bodily fluids, or other hygiene-sensitive contact
- Electrical current, batteries, or mains-voltage components
- Blades, seals, heating elements, or safety mechanisms
A 3D-printed part is not automatically equivalent to an injection-molded original. Differences can include layer strength, surface finish, dimensional accuracy, heat resistance, chemical resistance, fatigue life, and water absorption.
Philips separately describes replacing hygiene-related accessories, such as shaver blades, through its refurbishment process. That is a strong reason not to treat Fixables as permission to print or reuse hygiene-critical consumables without explicit manufacturer guidance.
How 3D printing could reduce e-waste
Fixables has several possible environmental benefits:
Rank #3
- Cost-Effective Filament Bundle: Get 2 "1kg" spools of PLA filament for the price of 1 with classic black and white color
- Smooth and Stable Printing: Patented design and manufacturing process ensures smooth, clog-free printing
- Durable and Strong: Improved toughness and strength for printing functional parts
- Compatible with Most Printers: Works with 99% of FDM and FFF 3D printers with heated beds
- Renewable Material: Made from starch derived from renewable plant resources for environmental friendliness
- Longer product life: A functioning device can remain in service after an accessory fails.
- Avoided replacement: The owner may not need to purchase another complete product.
- Less spare-part logistics: A local print can avoid some centralized manufacturing, warehousing, and shipping.
- Lower inventory pressure: A digital file can serve occasional demand without Philips stocking every low-volume plastic component.
- More accessible repair: Making repair visible and relatively simple may encourage people to maintain products rather than discard them.
These are potential mechanisms, not measured results. The official Philips material does not publish the number of Fixables parts printed, products kept in use, kilograms of e-waste avoided, energy used per part, failed-print rates, or a life-cycle comparison with factory-made replacements.
The most accurate conclusion is that Fixables could reduce e-waste when a printed accessory prevents disposal or replacement of a usable product. Whether it does so overall depends on the part’s material, print success rate, durability, electricity use, transport, and the fate of both the printed part and the original device.
Why 3D printing is not automatically greener
Printing a replacement consumes filament and electricity. Failed prints and support structures create additional material use. A trip to a print shop, packaging, or shipping can also add environmental cost. If a printed accessory breaks quickly and must be remade several times, its advantage becomes smaller.
By contrast, a small official replacement may be the lower-impact option when it is readily available, durable, and shipped efficiently. The strongest case for local 3D printing is usually a low-risk part that prevents disposal of a much larger product—not every replacement part in every situation.
Fixables and Philips refurbishment are different programs
Fixables is a consumer-facing route for producing selected accessory parts. Refurbishment is a separate process in which returned or used products are cleaned, tested, repaired or reconditioned, and prepared for another owner.

Philips reports that more than 30,000 refurbished Philips-branded products found homes in 2024 and that an estimated nine kilotons of products and packaging were recycled in the EU. Those figures concern Philips’ broader refurbishment activity; they should not be presented as the environmental impact of Fixables.
The two approaches support a similar circular-economy goal—keeping products and materials in use longer—but they operate at different points in the product life cycle.
What “open access” does—and does not—mean
Philips describes the files as available through free or open access. A secondary description uses the term “open source,” but the retrieved official material does not establish a specific software or hardware license.
Readers should therefore check the terms attached to each file before modifying, redistributing, or selling printed parts. Free access does not necessarily mean that commercial use, file redistribution, or alterations are unrestricted.

For conventional replacement parts, Philips’ U.S. parts-and-accessories lookup directs users to search by product category and model number. That support page is separate from the Fixables pilot.
When should you print, use a service, or buy an official part?
| Best option | When it makes sense |
|---|---|
| Print at home | The exact model and part are supported, the component is low-risk, the recommended material is available, and you already own a compatible printer. |
| Use a local print service | You need one small accessory, do not own a printer, and the service can provide the required material and dimensional accuracy. |
| Buy an official replacement | The component is a blade, seal, battery enclosure, electrical part, heating element, hygiene-related accessory, or another safety-critical component—or the product is still under warranty. |
Check the warranty before installing a third-party or self-printed part. A printed replacement may complicate support or a warranty claim, and the file’s instructions may impose additional limitations.
The unresolved test for Fixables
The important question is not simply whether a printer can reproduce a plastic accessory. It is whether the program causes enough products to stay in service, for long enough, to outweigh the material, energy, failed-print, and transport costs of making those accessories.

Philips Fixables presents a credible way to address the “one small part makes the whole product disposable” problem. Its current evidence supports describing it as a promising Czechia-based pilot for product-life extension. It does not yet support claiming a quantified reduction in e-waste, worldwide availability, or universal repairability across Philips’ product range.
